1. Introduction

1.1 About SASTRA

The dreams of its founding fathers took shape in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of

Engineering which transformed into Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research

Academy (SASTRA). It has carved a niche for itself as a centre of excellence for fostering

and developing the body, mind and spirit of its students. The blend of academic excellence

and real world experience with moral values has earned a national recognition for the

University. A sprawling campus housing a built-up area of over 30,00,000 square feet and a

vibrant population of over 10,000 students and over 700 teaching faculty have made

SASTRA a landmark in the educational map of India.

SASTRA offers various undergraduate and post graduate courses in Engineering, Science,

Education, Management, Law and Arts besides various Doctoral programmes. It has state-of-

the-art laboratories, a well-stocked library and one of the best computing facilities. With an

ideal teacher-student ratio, it achieves academic excellence through personalized attention.

The mechanism was established to support and monitor the student's progress which assures

success and satisfaction.

Since its inception, SASTRA has achieved national standing in terms of academic

performance, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and also in its growth and

commitment to social service. The standard of excellence of the courses offered in University

is reflected in the grades awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council

(NAAC) and in the success of the students indulged in industry and academia, both India &

abroad.

1.2 About the IIChE Student Chapter at SASTRA University

The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) Student Chapter at SASTRA University

was established on 19th January 2011. Under the aegis of the Student Chapter, various

activities such as guest lectures, technical discussions, quizzes and industrial visits are

conducted on regular basis. Apart from these, national level events are also being conducted.

Prakriya, the national level technical symposium, the first of its kind by the IIChE Student

Chapter was organized in October 2011 and went on to be a huge success. To continue this

proud legacy, the second edition of Prakriya was conducted in October 2012. Prakriya had a

variety of events such as oral presentation, poster presentation, working model events, guest

lecture, quiz, etc. It also had online events like photography and online treasure hunt.

Progressing with the time, IIChE Student Chapter organised its first ever Annual event

National Conference on Advances in Processing Engineering (CAPE) in October 2013. With

the confluence of guest lectures by eminent persons from academia and industry along with

technical presentations, it turned out to be a great success.

The second edition was organised in October 2014, carrying much expertise and insight than

previous year with the objective of fostering the art of chemical engineering further. It

embraced larger recognition and credits from participants than first edition, thus setting a

benchmark for the forthcoming years.

3. New initiatives during the academic year 2014 - 2015

The new initiatives undertaken during the academic year 2014 – 2015 were as follows

1. A new website for the IIChE Student Chapter at SASTRA University was created.

The website gives details of all the activities of the student chapter and serves as

common platform to share Souvenir, Annual report and photos of events conducted

under the student chapter banner. The webpage can be visited at

www.iicheschap.weebly.com

2. In honour of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, every year 15th September is

celebrated as Engineer’s day. To share and cherish the values imparted by Sir

Visveswaraya, starting from this academic year the IIChE Student Chapter also joined

the engineering community in celebrating the engineer’s day

3. The IIChE Student Chapter initiated the yearly celebration of Chapter Day on 19th of

January to mark its inception in the year 2011

4. A placement brochure has been designed by the chapter for the Department of

Chemical Engineering with the notion to facilitate better placement opportunities for

its students in core companies

5. In order to stimulate an enduring connection with the University's alumni and provide

the needful guidance based on their own experience, an Alumni interaction session

was initiated by the IIChE Student Chapter. As part of the Alumni interaction, a

former graduate is invited to his/her alma-matter and is requested to share his/her

thoughts with the current aspirants

6. A proposal has been made to celebrate 27th July as Chemical Engineering

Commemoration day every year on account of the birthday of George Edward Davis,

the founding father of Chemical Engineering which would also include a memorial

lecture to foster the values and legacy set by him

6. Summary of Events

6.1 Inauguration of IIChE Student Chapter 2014 – 15 council

The Council of IIChE Student Chapter, SASTRA University for the academic year 2014-

2015 was inaugurated on 30th July 2014. The function was honoured by Mr. G. Krishnan,

Chairman of IIChE, Chennai Regional Centre and Director of Morai Hydroban Ltd., Chennai.

The Convener, Dr. R. Kumaresan, Associate Dean, Chemical Engineering, released the

Annual Report of IIChE Student Chapter for the year 2013-2014 and second edition of the

chemical engineering magazine “Chemunique” (Volume 2, Issue 1). Mr. G. Krishnan drew

the attention of the audience by coining the prose poem called “Engineers Anthem”. He

enlightened the audience with opportunities for Chemical Engineers in small and large scale

industries.

With this new start, the swearing-in of IIChE council members for the academic year 2014-

2015 took place. It was followed by oath taking, administered by Dr. R. Kumaresan.

V. M. Maruthi Srivatsan, Chairperson, presented his strategies for upcoming events for the

academic year 2014- 2015 and promised a greater success. The vote of thanks was presented

by Ch. Rajitha, Vice Chairperson, Student Chapter.

6.2 Engineer’s Day Event

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, IIChE Student

Chapter celebrated Engineer’s day on 15th September 2014. The function was honoured by

Dr. Gautham B Jegadeesan, Senior Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering, SASTRA

University.

S.Varsha, III year B.Tech Chemical Engineering student shared a few thoughts on the works

and achievements of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, followed by a video on him. The

Convener of the student chapter, Dr. R. Kumaresan, Associate Dean, Chemical Engineering,

spoke on the occasion and advised the students to become faithful and dedicated engineers in

the footsteps of Sir Visvesvaraya, following professional integrity in career and life.

To celebrate the spirit of Engineer’s day, process development flow sheeting event called

“Develop your Flow sheet” was conducted. Eleven teams comprising of II and III year

Chemical Engineering students took part in this event. The student teams were assigned with

a particular raw-material and end-product and were asked to come up with a process flow

sheet on their own. Topics included were Soap from Goat, Sugar cane to paper, Bio-ethanol

from Shark oil, and Glass from Sand. Students presented their flow-sheet at the Engineer’s

day function and were judged by Dr. R. Kumaresan and Dr. Gautham B Jegadeesan.

The team comprising D. Balamurugan, G. Jayaram and K. Kishor from II year Chemical

Engineering won the first place. The Flow sheet developed by them on production of Tissue

Paper from Sugar cane was well appreciated by judges and the audience. The second prize

was won by the team comprising L. Akash, Sundar Ramasamy and Rahul Ganesh from III

year Chemical Engineering for their innovative flow sheet on the production of Talcum

powder from Ca/Mg silicate. The third prize was won by two teams consisting

R. Velmurugan and K. Raghuraman of II year and N. Swetha and Keerthana Krishnan of III

year Chemical Engineering. The topics given to them were conversion of Fatty acids to face

wash and Production of Shellac from Insect's Wax respectively.

In the latter half of the event, the chief guest Dr. Gautham B Jegadeesan gave a lecture on

“Nanotechnology for Environment and Energy – Opportunities and Challenges”. It included

the application of Nano materials in energy generation, pollution control, effluent treatment,

water purification and desalination. Prizes were given to the winners of the Flow-sheeting

event following his lecture.

6.3 National Conference on Advances in Process Engineering (CAPE 2014)

Extended Summary

About the conference

National Conference on Advances in Process Engineering (CAPE) is the annual event of the

IIChE Student Chapter SASTRA University. For the academic year 2014 – 2015, it was

conducted on 10th and 11th October 2014. The objective of this conference is to provide an

interdisciplinary forum for researchers and engineers to share and discuss their ideas on the

emerging issues in process engineering. The conference focuses on all aspects of process

engineering such as process development, manufacturing, and product development. The

conference aims to promulgate the knowledge of the most recent advances in understanding

the fundamentals and in translating the earned knowledge to specific engineering

applications. The conference provides an amicable platform for fruitful interaction amongst

young students, research scholars, practising engineers, academicians and industry delegates

through oral and poster presentations. Guest lecturers from eminent scholars of repute drawn

from academia and industry will serve as an impetus to steer and drive the conglomeration

towards knowledge sharing.

The National Conference on Advances in Process Engineering (CAPE) for this academic year

was organized by the IIChE student chapter, SASTRA University on October 10th and 11th

2014.

The plenary lecture was given by Dr. R. Chidambaram, Professor, Department of Chemical

Engineering, IIT-Madras on “Trends in Process Control”. He rendered an interesting speech

comparing the process control characteristics to the present scenario. This gave vital

information about process control operations in industries. His lecture focussed on identifying

suitable transfer function models by the open loop reaction methods, closed loop

reaction methods and relay auto tuning methods.

Following the plenary lecture, Mr. N. Byrava Moorthi, Manager, EID Parry (India) Ltd., gave

a lecture on “Process Modeling, Optimization & Pollution Abatement in Sugar Industry

Complex”. The lecture included the effective use of the large amount of by-products

produced in the sugar industry such as Molasses, Pressmud and water. He spoke about

aerobic, anaerobic effluent treatment and Solid waste management. The speaker also shared

his experience and gave tips on how to equip one-self for working in a core company.

The last lecture for that day was given by Mr. B. Panneer Selvam, Chennai Petroleum

Corporation Ltd (CPCL), Cauvery Basin Refinery Operations. The lecture was on “Current

Challenges and Activities in Petroleum Industries”. He introduced the various process units

in Refineries like Crude oil distillation, Catalytic Reforming Unit, Hydrocracker, Visbreaker

etc. He explained the environmental challenges involved in the Petroleum refining industry.

His speech enlightened the minds of Chemical Engineering students to work with such

industries.

A panel discussion was also organised in the afternoon session on “Career Opportunities

available for Chemical Engineers”. The discussion was moderated by Dr. R. Chidambaram

and the panel members were Dr. P. Marimuthu, Mr. B. Panneer Selvam, Mr. N. Byrava

Moorthi, Dr. P. M. Satya Sai and Dr. K. S. Rajan. All the members focussed majorly on the

importance of pursuing higher studies. Mr. Panneer Selvam stated that Petroleum industries

are the best emerging industries for Chemical engineers and they offer more salary than the

other industries (According to a survey conducted by the US). Mr. Byrava Moorthi insisted

that the job opportunities for M.Tech graduates are less compared to B.Tech, but the other

panel members contradicted his point. He urged the students to work with Safety and Hazard

analysis as it has a good scope in this era. Dr. Marimuthu emphasised that sincerity and

interest in the subject alone can reach one to greater heights. Dr. K. S. Rajan stressed on the

importance of GATE exam which aids in leading a career in any of the public sector

companies and in pursuing Masters in reputed institutions in India. He spoke about the

INSPIRE fellowship offered for the students who succeed in GATE and asked the students

to“Be Innovative and not Inventive”.

After the Panel discussion, the Oral and Poster sessions were organized, wherein 75

participants took part from different colleges in and around Tamil Nadu. The first day of

conference concluded with the Oral and Poster presentation session.

The second day of CAPE-2014 started with the Workshop on “Scilab”, a free and open

source computing tool, by Dr. P. R. Naren, Senior Assistant Professor, Chemical

Engineering, SASTRA University. 185 students from SASTRA University and about 90

students from other colleges participated in the workshop.

The first lecture on second day of the conference was given by Dr. P. M. Satya Sai, DGM,

NRB, BARC, Kalpakkam on “Nuclear Technology – Role of Chemical Engineers”. He spoke

about various job opportunities for Chemical Engineers. He insisted on the importance of

alternative energy and the ways of harnessing Nuclear Energy. He explained the uranium ore

processing, applications of Radio Isotopes and the solid waste management.

The next lecture was given by Mr. S. Jaykumar, Deputy General Manager (Operations),

Chettinad Cement Ltd. He discussed the production of Cement and its various types, grades

etc. He discussed the various environmental issues associated with the industry and the

various ways to prevent the same.

Dr. P. Marimuthu, DGM (R&D and Q.C) Seshasayee Papers and Boards Ltd., gave the

valedictory lecture on “Overview of Papermaking Process”. He spoke on the importance of

Paper production and described the various pulping processes. The various additives in paper

making were also discussed. He concluded his lecture with the message “Avoid plastics, Save

energy, Save water, Grow more trees”.

Prize money worth 12,000 INR was distributed to the winners of Oral and Poster presentation

and Certificates were issued to the participants at the end of function.

6.4 Chapter Day Function

As a remembrance of the establishment of IIChE Student Chapter in SASTRA University, the

Chapter day was celebrated on 19th January 2015.

The function was honoured by Dr. G. S. Venkataratnam, Principal Scientist, CLRI, Adyar,

Chennai. The welcome speech was given by V. M. Maruthi Srivatsan, Chairperson, IIChE

Student Chapter. A video highlighting the activities of Chapter during the academic year

2014 – 2015 on chronology basis was played. The convenor of Student Chapter

Dr. R. Kumaresan, Associate Dean, Chemical Engineering spoke on the occasion about the

previous activities conducted by IIChE Student Chapter from its day of establishment.

In the first half of the event, Dr. G. S. Venkataratnam gave a lecture on “Process

Development and Scale-up: Challenges and Issues”. It included the process of application of

a lab experiment in industrial level, difficulties and challenges faced during scaling up from

the lab conditions to pilot plant and to the commercial plant. The chief guest was then

honoured with a memento, as token of gratitude by Dr. Gautham B Jegadeesan, Senior

Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering, SASTRA University.

In the latter half of the event “Career Counselling” was given by Mr. Vinoth Kumar, HR, Sai

Consultancy Private Limited. It covered resume preparation, communication skills etc.,

which are necessary for attending interviews. He was felicitated with a memento by

Dr. V. Ponnusami, Professor, Chemical Engineering, SASTRA University. The function

concluded with vote of thanks given by Ch. Rajitha, Vice Chairperson, IIChE Student

Chapter.

6.5 Alumni Interaction

Alumni interaction is always an asset to students currently pursuing their course as the alumni

share their exemplary knowledge and experience. Such programs provide alumni with an

opportunity to reconnect with their alma mater. The first session under the Chapter was

initiated on 24th February 2015 by one of the former students – Sripada Pavan Pramod of

2012 B.Tech. Chemical Engineering batch, SASTRA University.

Sripada Pavan Pramod completed his B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering and graduated in

2012. Then he did his research internship at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (2011-

2012). He later joined University of Alberta, Canada to pursue Masters in Chemical

Engineering and graduated in the year 2014. He has engaged himself as Research Assistant

(September 2012 - present) under Prof. Rajender Gupta, University of Alberta. He has hands

on experience in teaching and is planning to do his PhD in the years to come.

He gave a brief insight into Clean Coal Technologies. Students had a glimpse of the most

sought-after Canadian Universities. He enunciated on 'clean' coal; issues in coal utilization;

Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) and its advantage over other technologies, challenges

and opportunities available in the domain of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage).

Following his presentation, there were few queries raised by the yearning students during the

questioning session. Discussion on the admission procedure to be followed, eligibility

criteria, availing scholarships, cost of living along with the tuition fees was covered during

the session. He also relinquished tips to write a prime SOP.

The session came to end with his inspiring words: " It is always a pleasure to apply what you

have learnt and this can be done only while doing Masters".

6.6 Workshop on Process Simulation using Aspen Plus

A two day workshop on Process Simulation using Aspen Plus was conducted on 13th and 14th

March 2015, exclusively for final year Chemical Engineering students of SASTRA

University. The instructor for the workshop was Dr. P. R. Naren, Senior Assistant Professor,

Chemical Engineering, SASTRA University. The workshop was conducted with the aim to

provide basic insight into the software.

Aspen Plus (V8.6, Aspen Tech, Inc., USA) software was provided for the benefit of

participants. The instructor elaborated on the use of software as a simulation tool, physical

property data bank etc. Computation of variation in physical and thermodynamic property

with respect to temperature and pressure were discussed in detail. Simulation of individual

blocks, namely Flash Drum, Mixer, Heater and Heat exchanger was discussed. At the end,

participation certificates were distributed to the participants.

6.7 Valediction

The Valedictory function of the Student Chapter for the academic year 2014 – 2015 was

celebrated on 03rd April 2015. The function was honoured by Mr. P. N. Maran, DGM,

ONGC, Karaikal. The welcome speech was given by V. M. Maruthi Srivatsan, Chairperson,

IIChE Student Chapter. It was followed by the address note by Dr. R. Kumaresan, Associate

Dean, Chemical Engineering, SASTRA University.

The guest lecture was delivered by Mr. P. N. Maran, DGM, ONGC, Karaikal. His talk was

extremely comprehensive, highlighting the importance of commitment a person must have

towards work. He re-emphasized on the fact “an idle man’s mind is a devil’s workshop” with

appropriate examples. He made it a point to maintain a lighter note all through his talk while

subtly voicing out strong domains of discussion including the desire for money, job

satisfaction and the un-explained aspiration to lead a life in America. He was given a

memento as a token of gratitude at the end of his lecture.

Following the guest lecture, the Student Chapter’s first ever beta version of the placement

brochure was released. The department souvenir and department magazine Volume 3, Issue 1

were also released successively. Certificates were awarded to the council members of the

IIChE Student Chapter for the academic year 2014-2015 in appreciation of their unshaken

efforts and dedication. It was followed by declaration of council members for the next

academic year. The council members will formally be inducted into the office in July 2015,

after the start of the new academic year. The Vote of thanks was delivered by G. Ganapathy,

Vice Chairperson.

7. Chemunique - The Department Magazine

Chemunique, being a part of IIChE Student Chapter since last year has been steadily

progressing by releasing its second and third edition. The Volume 2 Issue 1 was released

during the inaugural function of the IIChE Student Chapter held on 30th July 2014, Issue 2

was released during first day of the national level conference (Conference on Advances in

Process Engineering) on 10th October 2014 and Volume 3 was released on 3rd April 2015,

during the valedictory function of the IIChE Student Chapter. The magazine team for the

academic year 2014-15 consists of Keerthana Krishnan, N. Mohankumar, Raghavi Krishnan,

B. Ravi Bhaskar, S. Vigneshwar, L. Akash, K. Gopinath, K. Kishor, R. Lalitha, S. Nivetha,

N. R. Subathra, Sundar Ramasamy and C.P. Yamini who belong to II year and III year

B.Tech. Chemical Engineering.

The magazine publishes articles of students and faculty members. It encourages students to

suggest new ideas or new sections for its betterment. Articles based on different areas

pertaining to chemical engineering are being promoted through the magazine. It has an

interview section where alumni and professors are being interviewed about their experience

and areas of interest. It also comprises of interesting puzzles and facts to entertain the readers.

The magazine is easily accessible online in the IIChE portal where all the activities under

IIChE are being updated regularly.
