The past year could be summarized as a year of risk and change for Leadership Saskatoon.

Long-serving Board members have departed to pursue their leadership roles in the community. Terry Alm and Don Ravis were founding members of Leadership Saskatoon and continue to provide excellent examples of community leadership in civic politics and the not-for-profit sectors. Thank you both for starting this!

Daymond Volk and Kathy Weber, both program graduates have left the board with regrets to re-balance their work - family priorities. Thanks to Daymond for his excellent work in recruitment, and to Kathy for bridging us in to an excellent relationship with Concentra Financial – and our new location. Alumni are making their presence felt as new board members, and we are grateful for the work of Lana Doke from Sasktel, John McAuliffe from Saskatoon Catholic School Division, and Daryl Hyland from the United Way.

Our Executive Director, Betty Mutwiri has returned from maternity leave and the completion of her Masters degree in Leadership Training & Development at Royal Roads University. Welcome Betty. During her leave we were served and supported by Diane Fletcher who folded very well into the complex work. Thank you Diane.

Highlights of the 2004-2005 program year:

• Completion of a Program Evaluation Logic Model and beginning of an ongoing evaluation process thanks to the work and support of Kinzel Cadrin & Associates• A new location and excellent office, meeting space and IT support provided by Concentra Financial - a leader in Corporate Social Responsibility• A Board decision to limit class size to 25 participants to ensure our ability to deliver a quality learning experience

• Approval of a part-time administrative assistant to the Executive Director• My active participation as member and Co Chair of the Leadership Canada network

Issues and Opportunities

To date, more than 120 individuals have participated in our program and taken their place in new roles and

responsibilities in the community and their organizations. Sustaining this wonderful organization is the major issue facing us in the coming year. Our decision to ensure quality learning means we are spending down some of our founding reserves and must secure $40,000 in funding support for next year, and have a plan for this in the longer term.

We have an opportunity as important as re-building the Victoria Bridge for the

next generation. Wise and competent community leaders are the critical bridge between community issues and

community solutions. We are rich in talented alumni, mentors and supporters, and together we need to ensure a flow of annual resources to continue building this bridge to the future of our city.

Leadership Saskatoon will host the 2006 annual conference of the Leadership Canada Network programs May 11-13, 2006. This is an opportunity to showcase our city, our program and our volunteers in our city’s centennial year. As well, it will afford an opportunity for a wide level of participation to our community in an excellent learning event.

Going forward, it is my hope that, with your help and advice we will secure Leadership Saskatoon as an important foundation in our community for the next 100 years.

To attain this vision, the LS program combines a variety of learning approaches that reflect current best practices in the field of leadership development. These approaches include personal growth, skill building, feedback, coaching/mentoring and action learning. Last year, the program committee focused on greater alignment of program components to our strategic vision.

The results from the Class of 2004 summative evaluation confirmed the effectiveness of the program’s design and delivery as reflected in the following comments, “LS is a wonderful experiential learning opportunity”, “ challenging, informative and rewarding … gave me invaluable networking opportunities”, “gained practical tools to enhance my leadership”, “ gained new insights about self’. The participants cited improvements in the following skills and attributes as a result of the program: communication, issue analysis, strategic thinking, team building and collaboration, systems thinking, teamwork, networking and a deeper under-standing of self and others. The Trainers, Facilitators/ Coaches and Community Leadership Partners listed on Page 6 are invaluable to the success of this program. Thank You.

The Case Study Projects involve researching the ‘leadership story’ behind significant initiatives in the community. This aspect of the program connects the leadership theory to practice as participants interview the leaders behind these community success stories. These leaders share what it takes to move an idea to reality by employing the leadership practices such as, “Challenging the process, Inspiring a shared vision, Enabling others to act, Modeling the way and Encouraging the heart” (Kouzes & Posner, 1992). This action learning approach is a rare and unique opportunity that is offered through Leadership

Saskatoon! Page 7 showcases the organizations that were selected in 2004-5 year. Thank you to the leaders who shared their leadership wisdom with our participants.

Community Leadership Partners or Mentors provide an integral role in the participants personal growth development, community awareness and networking. Thank You.

The participants were also involved in a Police-Ride-Along and citizens Police Academy through the Saskatoon Police Service. These activities exposed them to yet another dimension of our comm- unity, which they found to be highly valuable. Thank you.

The values of diversity, inclusiveness and building a sense of trusteeship are embedded in the program’s design and delivery. I am pleased to report that we have received feedback to suggest that the skills and attributes that are acquired in the program are transferred into the workplace and the wider community.

I appreciate being a part of this great vision and for the opportunity of serving you. Thank you!
