Solar World Cup 2010A field report about my «Learning Place» in South Africa

Light from the Sun

I’m standing in a cold and simple classroom in a circle of local students. !ey are all staring at me. More precisely, at my hands. With the soldering iron in my right hand, and the tin-solder in my le", I try to demonstrate what I learned almost ten years ago as an electronics engineer apprentice.

We are halfway through a two-week training in Jeri-cho, a community of about 1.5 hours drive northwest of Johannesburg. All the fascinating information about the sun comes from Michael Götz, an expert in solar power from Switzerland. A"er working two weeks covering the basics– everything from where the electricity in South Africa comes from to how to handle a solar cooker– Michael will go another step further today. He has prepared everything to assem-ble a solar powered #ashlight together with the 23 trainees. A"er my short introduction, Michael takes over. I happily put down the soldering iron, and pick up my more familiar video camera. In fact, that’s why I’m here– to document the project on video.

Watching the students, I’m amazed about how quickly they learn to complete all the steps: sanding the wooden frame, gluing the battery holder, bending and cutting the LEDs, and $nally soldering it all to-

gether. I think to myself, «they know very well how to work with their hands.»

Showtime

It’s another sunny day, which is signi$cant because this is the «Open Day.» It’s now time for the stu-dents to show what they’ve learned in the last two

The job sounded more or less simple: «Teach students and adults in a rural village

about solar technology. Provide them with a complete solar power system, and install

it together with a regional company on the school hall’s roof so that the community can

watch the 2010 World Cup soccer games together.»

In reality, it wasn‘t simple at all. It was one of the most challenging projects that the

newly established Greenpeace Africa office in Johannesburg had realised so far.

My Job in South AfricaI work for Greenpeace Switzerland as visual communica-tion manager. I had the opportunity to go to South Africa in form of a «Learning Place» o%ered by the Green-peace «Learning Center». !e idea was to support the young o&ce in Johannesburg, and gain at the same time experience on an international project. !e main task I had to ful$l was documenting the «Solar Soccer Project» by producing and distributing videos. Beyond that, I also took photographs and helped whenever I had a hand free. In all, I was in South Africa for $ve weeks, and bring a many positive impressions home with me, especially of the wonderful people.

weeks. ey have prepared stalls, posters and also speeches to present their new knowledge to visitors from the village and school. A typical local meal with potatoes and meat is simmering on a solar cooker, a chairman of the tribal o ce is listening to a very en-gaging student who explains how a solar panel works. A solar power driven radio plays music– demonstra-ting that it’s easy to use this ubiquitous energy of the sun for everyday tasks. A er some speeches, some-thing very surprising happens– a girl starts singing and the entire audience is joining in. It is a sound like a gospel choir and the melody and the spontaneity is very moving. Later on, I will nd out that singing is as natural to the South A fricans as eating and drin-king. Amazing!

Work ing w ith th e lo c a l a uthor it i e s e « Solar Workshop » has nished and prepara-

tions for the « Solar Public V iewing Area » (Solar PVA) are intensifying.

We arrive late this morning in Jericho. About 20 people are waiting for climate campaigner N kopane Mapiri, the project leader from Greenpeace A frica . Marta , who works for Greenpeace Spain, and myself are also coming to the meeting with local authorities working for the tribal o ces, the re department

and the police department. I feel bad for letting these people wait almost an hour, but they understand. « T ime is a guideline in A frica » is a commonly heard quote here.

We take seats in a round in a classroom in the school and start to introduce ourselves. A er that, an exci-ting discussion starts that I can follow only in parts, because it’s mostly in Tswanna , one of eleven langua-ges spoken in South A frica . A lthough I don’t get every word, I can tell how cru-cial this meeting is, coming just days before the start of the World Cup. N kopane has to bring them all on board– everybody that has an important role in the community of Jericho has to agree with the project plan. And this is not just a formality, it’s really about, « go or no go. » N kopane is working hard to gain commitments from these stakeholders. H e listens pa-tiently, and then speaks using his hands to emphasise the points addressing people‘s concerns.

N kopane tells me later, « It’s very important that all the stakeholders are supporting our project, because we want to give it to them, it’s actually their project. We want the villagers to install the solar panels on the roof of the school, and we need the police to ensure the security while we show the matches, and

nally the villagers have to operate the whole solar power system a er the World Cup is over. We initiate it, but then they have to carry on with the project themselves. »

A er hard negotiations about V IP tickets and various concerns, all the local authorities are brought on board and excited about the project. It‘s a success.

On the roof

Just in time, two day before the kick o , a truck with the solar panels nally shows up. Actually, the instal-lation of the whole system should have started four days ago, but there was something missing. Again, « time is a guideline » and in the end everything works out– or so I start to believe!

I ’m still a bit skeptical as I take a closer look at the sca olding leaning on top of the roof of the school hall. It doesn’t only look shaky, in fact, it is an adven-ture to climb. ree workers from Lehakoe Energy Projects (a Johannesburg solar energy instillation company) and about ve solar trainees are alrea-dy working on the roof. W ith ropes and muscle power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place. e sun is setting already as they connect the last panels.

e two most enthusiastic students stayed until the end. And they really love the work they do. « It’s a part of my career, » Johannes, 17, tells me when I asked him if he likes this work .

At the same time, 36 batteries and a power conver-ter have been installed inside the hall. ese heavy blocks will store the energy that comes from the sun during the day, supplying electricity for the beamer and the sound system during the night.

Volunteering

Two days before kick o of the World Cup, Tshepo Peele, volunteers coordinator of Greenpeace A frica , increases the group of volunteers we are working with from 23 up to about 60. ere are a lot of villagers who want to become a part of the project and so it was not an easy task to choose the most motivated. We need more volunteers because there is a lot to do before World Cup kicko at Soccer C ity stadium in Johannesburg. e volunteers will paint ban-ners, clean up the hall, set up the 600 chairs and the screen, hang up ags and place banners outside. ey will eat together, de ne groups and responsibilities, and discuss how to check the people at the entrance to the viewing area . is is a very important task, because alcohol is not permitted, and the crowd has to be counted to prevent too many people from en-tering in the hall. Security rst, this was a strict rule Greenpeace followed in the preparations, and also later during the matches.

K i c k o f f!«It’s a bit like on a summer festival,» says Jesus Rolle from Greenpeace Spain, as the !rst groups of football fans show up at the Solar PVA in Jericho. "ere are people of all ages– youngsters of about six years up to elderly people who come with someone to help them to walk.

It’s such a colourful sight as the hall !lls up. Many of them wear very colourful clothes and blow their vuvuzelas as loud as possible while dancing in front of the big screen. And then it’s on! "e !rst Soccer World Cup on the African continent and, at the same time, the !rst Solar Public Viewing Area are celebrating their debut with so many happy people and such a lot of noise! A few minutes a#er the kick-o$, I have to leave the hall and watch the game from outside through a door– it is far too loud for me. I measured about 114db of clamor, which seems to be comfortable for South African ears– the party is on.

In th e ir H a n d sMidnight. We are exhausted but also very happy as the !rst game we screened is over. It was a big success for everybody. "e local people enjoyed being a part of this big event in their own country. "e school principal is absolutely overjoyed to have so many people from all over the region at his school. Police and the !remen, who help Greenpeace with security, are also satis!ed that everything went so smoothly. Not to mention, the volunteers who jumped at the chance to help out, and without whom we couldn’t have completed project.

Everybody I’ve spoken to in Jericho today is so positive about the project. "e villagers are particu-larly grateful for the knowledge of solar energy we‘ve brought to them. And of course, the complete solar power system, donated by Greenpeace, gives them many new opportunities to use this reliable and sus-tainable energy source a#er the World Cup is over.

Projectscope"is project was a joint venture between: GP Africa, GP YouthSupportCenter and SolarGeneration Internatio-nal. While energy campaign had the idea and the lead of the project, YSC supported with counceling project development and designed the solartraining providing the solar-trainer and a project intern.

"e costs were in all about 100‘000 %, out of it 65‘000 % operational costs covered by GPAf, SolGenInt, YSC and Deutsche Umweltsti#ung with support by GP CH and SolGen France.

"e solar installation had 3.2 kWpeak performance (26 panels, 120 Watt/each) delivering eletricity corresponding to two european average households.

Person in charge: Nkopane Mapiri (energy campaigner and project leader), Tshepo Peele (outreach coordinator), Fiona Musana (communication), Kuno Roth (GP YSC), Abigail Jabines (SolarGeneration International).

Youth Solar Projects & Integration in NRO & Ongoing Projects & Youth Involved

Recommended Good Practices & Aims

Added Values, Effects , Results

Enabl ing Factors

Impeding Factors

Needs Suggestions / Measures for Improvement (Lessons Learned i f there are already) Plans for 2011 *Potential of Youth Solar Projects for GP work **Perspectives

Albert (Phi l ippines) A Integration in NRO: Integrated in campaign & alliance building; project on Philippines, Go Renewable where they worked with faith-based groups, industry, local government units to spread the ER. Ongoing Projects: Sustainable campus project (2011 onwards) Youth Involved: we focused on universities, but colleges and high schools

Recommended Project: Green Campus Program with a consolidated approach by involving partners who are specialized in other fields such as Forest restoration, Vermi culture, solid waste management, organic farming etc., while SG on Energy Efficiency, all in order to achieve the Green Campus idea. Network building (school based groups) Green Campus is a long-term project (often more than 1 year commitment).

Added Values, Effects, Results Regarding recommended project: - Simple practical action - opportunity for youth to express what they want for their future - impact on decision makers was great: government replicated the best practice by one university we’ve engaged, announced provincial wide program in schools - it engaged external network or allies: possibility to work with other NGO’s, rel. groups, campus orgs, legislator during implementation - added value to campaign in reaching it’s objective regarding: local media work if work in Negros, response of target, participants got know-how and demonstrate solutions, motivates and enables youth to be active as solution multipliers

Enabling factors: Regarding recommended project: - willingness of youth without expecting any returns - creativity based on the inspiring actions/events been holding by SG in other countries > we were able to create concepts that are applicable to the work being done in each areas. - looking at the past problems, enables us to improve our approach - looking on the cultural differences - The dedication of the young people and the ability to share resources (e.g. father sharing his car etc.), and working with very motivated young people

Impeding factors: Regarding recommended project: - When school admin rejects proposal/idea. - if project is not aligned in the calendar of campus activities and during activity ban due to exam week. With regard to youth work: in terms of actions: young people should not be involved in direct actions, better involve them in solutions work. If they are involved in actions it will effect the fundraising as well, as people will believe the youths and kids are instrumentalized.

Needs: Regarding recommended project: - know-how exchange, - training and capacity building, - possibility to order materials or documents, - advice from experienced people, - support from SolGen and YSC - support for proposal development - financial support (not much) - possibility to order o materials or documents for practical activities o child or youth specific campaign material - overcome obstacles in GP structure (sometimes the priorities are different in the NROs than the priorities agreed on at international skillshares) Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: Regarding recommended project: - By securing the core team created from each project - to further sustain the program by conducting both know how exchange, training and capacity building. - We have a new project (the improved version of the green campus project) called sustainable campus project -> this approach includes network mobilization and the work with groups and partners. - better time-management is needed -> many activities will be done instantly without much time for preparations, so better think of the unexpected before and try to prepare - set time-frames and deadlines -> better planning With regard to youth work in general: - Me: presentation on youth involvement and intentions of GP for young people and parents, school admin etc.

Page 12: Annexes Part 2 - WAVEwave.greenpeace.org/waveV2public/sites/default/files/attachments... · power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place

were also involved. young people involved per university: +/- 20 (15 from the student council, 5 SolGen members) Apart from this numerous people from all university departments were involved (admin to security guards)

about 10 universities and more than 15 schools were involved (not all schools are documented) human resources: Albert + SolGen students (5) finances: not much (schools/ unis cover a lot of costs -> already included in proposal). Transportation, material, food -> covered by GP -> about 50,- EUR /month Aims: - to mobilize groups who are also into environmental issues so GP can build cooperations with them and get them involved in energy issues and energy efficiency - to get schools and unis involved and show how

- fundraising opportunities for the NRO - mobilized people as GP supporters Regarding youth work in general: It is the young peoples future so they have to be involved!

- national and international level: more videos and brochures showing international youth work (e.g. new youth promo video) Plans for 2011: - sustainable campus project -> nation wide campaign (see B1) - pushing the energy revolution *Potential: - SolGen enables young people to show the bigger picture of what is happening on the globe - SolGen is a great opportunity for young people to work with technical experts and involve communities; they get inspired and encourage other young people who finally might become GP supporters themselves. **Perspectives: (not yet asked)

Page 13: Annexes Part 2 - WAVEwave.greenpeace.org/waveV2public/sites/default/files/attachments... · power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place

they can reduce emissions - to get local governors to reduce emissions

Brenda (Mexico) B Integration in NRO: The wheel youth and education depends on ED directly. We support campaigns with activities at schools and other kind of like public activities and also for support fundraising. I don’t work with the action team, just with volunteers. Campaigners support activities sometimes, hen it is a specific request of them. But now I've been working more with climate change campaigner. I feel the others

Recommended Project: photo opportunity with children and youth closing the summer school, in front of one of the "Electricity Federal Comission's office": The participants were using a sun mask and holding a banner with the message "less fossil fuel, more solar energy" Aims: (Not yet asked)

Added Values, Effects, Results In regard to recommended practice: - It was complete work, first we've worked with the kids for a week, had a small conference, practical activities, a demonstration with parents (cooking with sun and showing all the work we did during this week), they have a talk with the action team who explained them about NVDA and NVPA then they participate in the public activity. So, this way it has more sense for the youth. - it added value to a campaign in reaching its objective regarding: quality/quantity of media coverage. In regard to plans for 2011: - to add value in the media coverage, the mobilization of supporters or the engagement of external networks is hard,

Enabling factors: - in regard to recommended practice: Action's and campaigners support, continue work with youth. In general (youth work): Good coordination with volunteers. Keep in touch with the youth group and include them in activities of the campaigns to make feel them part of GP. Teach the volunteers to be able of work with youth groups. A good planification. Support of comms and campaigns (and more time too).

Impeding factors: Regarding work with youth: - People, especially parents have a wrong image of GP, they think we are too radicals and is hard for them to trust in us. - Finance. Campaigners and actions have low trust in the work. - comms have to much work, so we dont' have materials for youth, like fact sheet, and information. - no monitoring of new people. - I think that is necessary a change in the GP Mex structure. I like the Spanish model where volunteers, youth and action team are in the same area, called "participation". This way you have volunteers, activist, youth and education and it gives to the rest

Needs: Regarding youth work: - Human resources for the school visits and summer school (like 5 people). - Infra structure, will be really good if we could have a van for the youth activities. - Finance for buy some materials: videos, computer (small one because I don’t have) solar materials a }n solar pot, ar for the solar bar (a bycicle to produce electricity) and stuffs like that. Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: In regard to recommended practice: - Capacity building for the volunteers who work with the youth program: Communication, inspiration (how to inspire youth people), practical knowledge (solar training is perfect) and about NVEA and NVPA). - Publicity of the youth program. - Doing more activities with youth. In regard to youth work: - Keep in touch with young people, by e-mail, acebook or a blog, this way they feel part of the organization, have meetings with them to know what are their interests and worries. - When planning a youth public activity it’s important to work with the campaigner and the action team, organize with anticipation and be sure that young people understand the mains of the activity and the political context. - infra structure: maybe a better space to give the capacity building - like a classroom. Or some equipment to the spaces. - training and capacity building - human resources: I think it will be enough with a good team of volunteers which I’m building. Work with Chikara - One of the main things for the next year is to be in charge of an special group of volunteers to support the youth and school activities. - improve the meetings for new volunteers, make like a selection of the

Page 14: Annexes Part 2 - WAVEwave.greenpeace.org/waveV2public/sites/default/files/attachments... · power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place

still have some resistance to work with youth and kids. Ongoing Projects: Starting with youth solar projects, had solar training, probably solar activities for COP16. School project Youth group Youth Involved: Age: 14- 24. 9 people, and in the youth group there are more than 20, but not all of them are constant.

but possible. - impact on fundraising, because we keep donors and increase the number of that because many people like the school activities and youth activities. - we offer a new area of development for the volunteers. Not all the people have the skills for being activist. Or maybe they don't want it. - And we promote our campaigns.

of the office the message that there are very important areas and all of them support (in different ways but with the same strength) the campaigns. They communicate to volunteers and new volunteers that they can do many things in GP not only NVDA (which are important but is not just that). In regard to youth work generally: - I have some difficulties for integrate youth activities into the campaign, especially because it had been hard for me to consolidate a group of youth people they come and go. - we don't have a lot of volunteers. they do many different things and they are not concentrate in specific activities.

different profiles of volunteers and offer them and option to be part of Greenpeace supporting the youth activities. -The first step to gain the people's confidence. I think we don't have a lot of young volunteers or youth people. If we show the nice face of GP and the other activities we do, I think more people will want to be supporter or volunteer. More publicity for youth people. Spread the images of all the activities we do. Increase our participation in youth activities like concerts, expositions. But is hard for us to plan all this stuffs. That's why we need the volunteer participation - but they have to do a lot of things too. To do this, a combination of activities would be necessary. Plans for 2011: 1.- consolidate the youth group, and strengthen 2.- increase the participation of this group in campaign activities 3. extend the school network 4.- implement the school project about climate change it a public school 5.- consolidate a group of volunteers to help the youth activities and school activities 6.- develop a summer school (we did it this year) but we want to extend the duration and increase the participants *Potential: (not yet asked) **Perspectives: It’s possible that the next year we have a budget for the area.

Fred (France) A Integration in NRO: – SolGen France

Recommended Project: Campus program: identify youth students

Results, added values, effects: - concrete way to reduce carbon footprint on campuses - AND educate students to energy issues

Enabling factors: - Liaison with other student networks. - Fund for trainings and public activities. - Means to realize

Impeding factors: - High level of technical knowledge needed to achieve the projects. Students need to know the legal

Needs: - know-how exchange: We would like to do solar camps like in Switzerland, exchange with Swiss trainers. - training and capacity building - possibility to order materials or documents Communication tools, maybe tools like VIP Solar Sets (we think about organizing a service in

Page 15: Annexes Part 2 - WAVEwave.greenpeace.org/waveV2public/sites/default/files/attachments... · power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place

is independent from GP France. Project on setting RE or EE targets in campuses. Ongoing Projects: Work on 27 campuses, from 8 we have no news, so probably 19 ongoing. Youth Involved: Between 18-25 years old, students, mainly from the private sector, less from the public sector. Private colleges have most of the time more capacity, there the students are encouraged to have private projects, to become leaders, improve their entrepreneurship. external assessment showed: between June

organizations needing support in implementing energy efficiency and renewables on their campuses and help them with lobbying to administration and with project management and fundraising. Aims: - Lower the current emissions on around 15% (depends on campuses) - empower youth as future professionals and citizens on climate and energy issues.

- it added value to a campaign in reaching its objective regarding: response of target, participants could get know-how and demonstrate solutions, it motivates and enables young people to be active as solution multipliers, it engaged external network or allies

communication tools as tool kits and flyers. - There is a big will from the youth to get involved with big organizations like GP.

context (what they can do and what they can’t), need to understand bio gas, solar panels. A balance between training and concrete actions is needed. Normally students have 1 day per week for SolGen. So we try to combine organizing and learning. - Fundraising: 2005 when the project was inside GP, it was a good fundraising opportunity. Now it’s difficult to raise money and realize at the same time the project. - Media work: Lack of relationship with media. Because we are independent of GP. - Regarding big will from the youth to get involved with big organizations like GP and there is a lot of youth non-violent movement in France, they use the same approach as GP: But GP does not offer opportunity to the youth to be part of GP. It’s a matter of trust - people don’t trust the youth. In

France) - human resources It would be better if we had 1 coordinator, 1 responsible of technical issues, 1 communication / fundraising person. Now we are 1,5 persons (0,5 done by a women doing civilian service, 24 hours a week during 9 month). Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: – regarding the impeding factor “restricted time of students and needed high level of technical know-how”: Working with professionals, hire an engineer as project leader. Concentrate on the technical training for 10-30 interested students from the whole France and contract the rest of the time an engineer who supports the work on the campuses. Till now the students who study engineering could conclude their projects, the others not. - regarding “no trust in youth”: The world needs to understand the youth, set up a youth policy, trust the youth. - SolGen and GP could lead into the building of a non-violent youth movement with trustable arguments about energy and climate issues in France. We know what we want and we say it. I think SolGen should become leaders in environmental issues. - regarding Fundraising: We need assessment and evaluation to make a better fundraising. We need to produce fundraising materials, for this year we plan pictures, review, videos. I think we could finance projects with fundraising: It’s a question of people and political agenda. We are now financed half by the state and half by the private sector. - Internationally we could need a better definition of priorities of SolGen - this would help us nationally to build a better framework. Sharing know-how would be improved, if everybody would know that they work in the same framework. This framework should be discussed with everybody in a skill share. It could be the follow-up of this review. Plans for 2011: - Assessment of work - Technical training for energy efficiency and renewable energy. - Big public call: Open letter. *Potential of Youth Solar Projects for GP work: - I’m not sure, if there is a big political effect on the GP work. It’s more a public impact, it’s another way of direct action. It’s direct action not in opposition, but doing something concrete, not only communication.

2005 and June 2007 10% of all French students were involved in SolarGeneration activities (went to conference, participated in festival or organized project).

France, for the media and political space there is the pro-verb: “To everybody it’s own place”. This attitude doesn’t let no space for the voice of the youth - especially regarding the climate issue.

- The aim of SolGen is to touch the public and show that solution is possible and available. **Perspectives: (not yet asked)

Added values, results, effects: Regarding recommended project: - it added value to a campaign in reaching its objective regarding: quality/quantity of media coverage, response of target, participants could get know-how and demonstrate solutions, it motivates and enables young people to be active as solution multipliers - it mobilized and/or converted people to Greenpeace supporters - it offers fundraising opportunities for the NRO - it engaged external network or allies - it is because Solar Generation has kept purposing RE and smart utilization of electricity as a key solution against new dirty power plants. It is

Enabling factors: Regarding recommended project: - Budget, - technical knowledge - cooperation Regarding youth work: - Cooperation in terms of knowledge, technology advance, creativities, project management. From my part, between GPSea and GPI, and between GPsea and GPsea as well

Impeding factors: Regarding recommended Project: - Not enough budget and no skill on campaign now we have efficient staff with strong hard to protect environment but what we lack is budget per campaign that it is sometimes not enough. I face the problem that I have to think twice when spending money. Some activities is good, but I cannot follow up. - Know how exchange, train and capacity and better infrastructure. Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: Regarding recommended project: - training staff to have more knowledge on what they campaign with enough budget - while regular cooperation with other SG network to update and upgrade works globally. Regarding youth work: - Training to staff on their field, e.g. solar generation training on renewable energy. An exchange program should be good. For example GPI train us to make solar kit. Because I'm new for SG Thailand, I don’t have much knowledge on RE file. I will study more and more on RE as i do this campaign. I try to take chance to the training or camp or seminar. - On the national level the project management and financial support need to be improved for more smooth projects. I urge budget approval

environmental project • To build Climate Rescue Station as a base of climate education Climate Rescue Station is one way of GPsea campaign in public

noted to raise concrete activity in public so that general people easily get involved. Renewable energy is not only solar cell or wind power which are expensive nowadays and hardly technical excess among ordinary people. Thus, harnessing solar energy directly with low cost is more appropriated such as solar cooker and solar water heater. Moreover, smart power campaign is also crucial with “do less get more” that easy understanding and practicing. Smart use of power is not only electricity but also think which is produced from energy. Thus, separating garbage before throwing activity can keep abreast with smart power (Smart production, smart use and smart reuse). Those above activities are obviously seen because it is related to a large number of people in household that offer good opportunities to media coverage, folk mobilization and fundraising. Regarding plans for 2011: - media coverage, - motivate young people

sometimes a challenge: We have to take time to wait for their decision in case we work with communities. - Another problem is we don’t work in exact day and time because of dynamic plan. So we cannot lunch activities as planned. That might not reach objectives. E.g. When I was in Jakarta I got trained at the time. I have to launch smart power in 2 weeks later but I had to postpone time. That makes the activities not well prepared.

person to improve: Don’t reduce budget or load budget to specific country, please keep budget balanced as appropriated for the project and the real issue happening in each country. - More fund. - I will add measure that we will meeting objective or not. One of my objectives of smart power camp is to encourage youth to kick off their project. I can measure how many project raised by youths after camp. Plans for 2011: - We plan to unite youths from different provinces in Thailand by training them in a camp (one every three month, in different regions, depending on government energy plan), then encourage them to create their green activities. Then we follow up what they plan to do. Now we initiate project in Bangkok, then we go to the south where is target of nuclear power plant site. The issue is related to energy problems, for example nuclear, coal, etc., including oil drilling ste where we launch Smart Power campaign. That get lots of attention. So we plan to follow up activities by working with local communities more massively. Now we already work with communities and we plan to strength them to address the problem by themself supported by us. *Potential: - There are more platform to express their ability for youth. - SG is young, they have creativity, and energy to make thing happen like GP work which is so challenge to youth. So they have positive effect on GP work. Activities created by youth get a lot of attention, that is also good for fund raising. With the energy of the youth they powerfully kick off project widespread under SG and GP. **Perspectives: (not yet asked)

to be active as solution multiples - engage external networks, communities and others. Now after the ship tour we enhance our relationship with other network. It’s the southern network, eastern network and other NGO, including school and university. Environmental civilian society networks. Regarding youth work: - we get more network and attention. For me I think I can help save environment by working with youth, who is the new generation.

integrated in the volunteers department. Has active youth program that adopts SolGen as a project depending on the campaign needs. Integrated in campaign & local groups; project election campaign Youth involved: - At the moment there are about 40 youth groups ( = 40 cities) with 750 youths actively supporting Greenpeace. Ongoing Projects: - Nevertheless activities which well fit solar generation were done with the German youths - one of them is referred to below.

145 youths, 14-20 years old, all JAGs (GPGer youth groups) participated in the activity Resources needed: 26.000 € (the activity plus preparations took three days, so costs included food, accomodation -> 8.000 €, anfahrt 9.000 €) 1 campaigner (80 hours preparations), 2 voluntary environmantal gap year (FÖJ) (80 hours) for the camp before the activity: 10 person in charge/ person in support, at the activity: 20 person in charge/ person in support building of resources needed to achieve the action (building of action tools/

average one youth activity in the national news) – so the media output is rather low - But in a broader view youth work is VERY important for the organization and for GPGer -> GPGer is overaged, youth activities give a young picture to the organization - GP as an organization has a responsibility, this includes giving youths a plattform, to educate and to nurture them - GP gets inspired through youths - Through youth work GP stays in close contact to topics which are relevant for the young generation - Through youth work the organisation makes sure to regenerate itself

youths in the water) Scene of the activity (-> governmental quarter) - support through facebook (+) -> GP Jugend Facebook (suggest and vote for banner slogan; many people accompanied online during the activity) Regarding youth work: - (maybe not asked)

JAGs (youth groups) are mostly between 14-19 years old. This causes problems when international youth activities are planned and carried out, as the German youth cannot take part in „half-legal“ activities or activities which are done with the normal GP groups/ volunteers. Youth work in Germany ends when the youth are more or less 19 years. To get around this dilemma an 18 year old girl was chosen to participate in Copenhagen. However, in 2009 youths participated in the climate campaign and in 2010 in the atom campaign - but the solar generation logo was not used.

- Have less JAGs in small cities -> most JAGs only live for a few years and don´t create „spouse“ or a new generation, while in the big cities there is always fresh people/ new generation learning from the older JAGs and becoming their follow-ups. In small cities the effort and energy to find a JAG is too much. Plans for 2011: (no answer, not asked) *Potential: - GP gets inspired through youths - Through youth work GP stays in close contact to topics which are relevant for the young generation - Through youth work the organisation makes sure to regenerate itself **Perspectives: (not yet asked)

Added values, results, effects: Regarding plans for 2011: - it will add value to a campaign in reaching its objective regarding: quality/quantity of media coverage (-> due to showing solutions),

Enabling factors: Regarding plans for 2011: - This depends very much on how much experience could be gained on workshops and trainings as well as on international

Impeding factors: Regarding plans for 2011: - The biggest problem will be the budget. Regarding youth work in general: - The Indian

Needs: Regarding plans for 2011: - We need trainings and experience from overseas/ experienced campaigners. We will work with one campaigner and 1-2 volunteers who support SolGen from GPIndia office. - Budget is the bottle neck – there is hardly any budget in GPIndia for this. Regarding youth work in general:

Deven is interested in Climate Solutions Caravan, will probably take part in Solar Training in Mexico. Youth involved: - Starting from 14+ years old, different age groups will be involved in SolGen. participants could get know-how and demonstrate solutions, it motivates and enables young people to be active as solution multipliers - it will mobilize and/or convert people to Greenpeace supporters - gives the opportunity to learn what GP is about -> we show solutions, this is new for GP and will create a lot of positive feedback; - good also for external network Regarding youth work in general: - The youth are the decision makers of tomorrow, we have to get them involved as we fight for their future – with them. The youths give us new opportunities for actions.

metropolitan youths are very busy; it is hard to get them on board and really committed.

- know-how exchange - training and capacity building - advice from experienced people - support from: YSC - financial support - better infrastructure - other things: international support - National level: youth participation in the planning process of activities Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: - Coordination and creativity could both be improved – the youth should get the opportunity to make decisions and they should take part in the planning of activities -> more participitation is needed. Plans for 2011: - With the help of SolGen we want to develop a rural mobilization on energy issues; people from the countryside who already support GP and are engaged should get the opportunity to get some concrete work. We will do activities in the rural areas with our volunteers/ youths, the locals will join us and learn from the demonstrations (e.g. solar panel installation) Lessons learned / Potential: The youth have a lot of energy and enthusiasm – we have to make better use of this.

Raquel (Spain ) A since: Integration in NRO: Integrated in Education; project on Solar Camps. Youth involved: - There are about 40-50 young people in the Youth Action Net, 10 are in the core team - they send mails, information, lead workshops. School Net: About 60 schools. Actually we present the project in many cities, so it will be more soon maybe. Teachers or

Recommended Project: - We are starting the activit ies with Youth Action Net and School net. The young people will be the "green leaders" in their schools. This program is really interesting and could be great to encourage both projects. The Green Leaders are like a core team, they work with GP for a long time and know a lot about the campaigns. Aims: - Youth Action Net: Help the campaigns to get the message

Added values, results, effects: Regarding recommended project: - it’s "easy" to do, because all youth people are studying and the spend a lot of time at school and give them the opportunity to do Greenpeace activities in the school is great and get stronger both projects. - it added value to a campaign in reaching its objective regarding: response of target we collect signatures for campaigns and participants could get know-how and demonstrate solutions, solar energy and renewable energy. Regarding youth work in general: - The youth message is always different, that’s why it is important for the campaigns, but as well for

Enabling factors: Regarding recommended project: - Get a strong youth

action net and prepare

a good guideline. I can

upload our step by

step and translate it in

English.

Regarding youth action net: - We use an internal web (drupal, with forum, gallery...). - I put proposals for activities at schools or national GP meetings (actually we had the global action day in Madrid, 10:10:10). - And some times there are big parties, when a lot of organizations do activities together. Regarding school net: - We are connected with an internal web (with forums and so

Impeding factors: Regarding recommended project: - My incapacity to travel and do a lot of meeting in the different schools cities... So I use the phone, internet, mail, support of Green Leaders (who sometimes live in cities nearby and can take over tasks). Regarding youth work: - Sometimes difficult to engage external network because campaigns are critical

Needs: Regarding youth work in general: - Human resources; - materials and documents: WAVE is a good experience and it really good now. What I would like to have more, are direct documents: For example where I can read how to install a PV system or solar music or how can I do an exposition. - experience; - meetings - more exchange: Like the learning place of Brenda in Spain; both sides learned a lot. Maybe an exchange with Tanya as well - because sometimes people working with youth feel alone at GP. When there is more exchange (not only by net), we feel stronger Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: Regarding recommended project: - We want to connect the school and action net, because all are students and pass a lot of their time in schools (3 meetings a year are not enough). Young people feel well if they can do activities. - And I try to support the students to organize activities themself: Because like this, it’s more interesting as well for them. I prepared a guideline, with ideas and suggestions how to do this, with short and simple steps, like: “Look for a cool teacher...” and so on. I will send it to the YSC so it can be shared. - A lot of activities are organized by the father and mother associations on Saturdays in Spain: They go to the forest, play football... We want to try to involve schools, teachers, employed people, communities and parents - shortly all the people involved in education. Regarding youth work in general: - Idea for all youth coordinators: It would be good if people would use more WAVE. Then there would be more discussions, we could

to the public. Because sometimes campaigns do lobby work, but the general public needs to know what is climate change. - Education goal: Young people learn a lot about environmental problems and solutions. In the future they can act consciously, like this it will be a green future. Both aims are important.

the future. We need people in the future, they grow up and think.

on). - Each month there is one big action related with a GP campaign. In October it is about the forest campaign, because all students buy paper in this month. In November it will be a climate action, related with Cancun. - There are now big presentation from the volunteers about this school network in 3 cities. People can subscribe as member. Target groups are teachers, parents and monitors (from boyscouts and similar associations). Regarding the Green Leaders: - Participation is important for the young people: To tell somebody “do this, do that ...” - that’s not education. We want to develop projects together with the young people. So it’s better if a young Green leader can lead a youth team. Even it’s not sure if they have enough time and do it in the way I imagined,

exchange youth specific materials for campaigns. Eva visited WAVE recently and she found it became perfect since the skill share: With so many documents, with the new functions and so clearly structured. It’s normal that a platform like WAVE needs between 1 and 2 years to get optimized and till people really use it. - We plan to realize solar learning and practical activities with a moodle training. Because one week is much for the many teachers who would like to participate in our summer camp: With e-learning the teachers would need only a week-end to get trained. Plans for 2011: (Not explicitly asked) *Potential: (not asked) **Perspectives: (not yet asked) -

Tshepo (South Afr ica) B since: Integration in NRO: SolGen was adopted as a tactic by South Africa for the Solar Kick-off 2010, but there is no official SolGen group or project. 2010 the Solar Powered Public Viewing and a solar training were realised for the World Cup. Youth involved: - Ongoing Projects:

Recommended Project: - Aims: -

Added values, results, effects: - (As this interview was focused on the perspectives and not on a concrete youth solar project, see under enabling factors and potential)

Enabling factors: - The novelty of solar

in south africa is an

enabling factor.

- To win a campaign I

believe and have seen

a glimpse of this takes

every available

resource you have and

the youth in South

Africa display activism

as the country itself is

enriched by the

activism from the early

60's and 70's.

- It's important to have

a youth voice for our

campaigns as I think

people listen when the

youth of south africa

talk.

Impeding factors: - and impeding is the

expense of the solar

structure itself

because we can

educate about it but

people can't have it

for their own houses

as it's too expensive,

Needs: - More financial support would help in realising more of these projects

and of course more human resources.

Suggestions / Measures for improvement: - I would appreciate if my NRO had sent me to mexico to get

experience on what they did in the light of Cop16 happening in their

country the run up to i and during the talks or if not me then someone

who would then work with me in 2011 as P.O assistant for the run up to

cop17 in South Africa and help me plan and execute the cop 17

strategy better. Basically offer a 1 year position to the person they want

to send to Mexico as it's useless if they can't use what they've learnt.

Plans for 2011: - 2011, I still don't know what we going to do honestly, the campaigns

director did not want me going to Mexico for cop16 (she says she

needs me in S.A for cop16) and now were financially and physically

unable to plan for next year. We had some activites for COP16 planned

but due to budget constraints we don't know for sure what it will be. We

do have a plan but are just waiting for the budget to be approved and

it's taking time for them to approve it, 2 weeks and counting. According

to the project leader chances are good that it will be accepted.

Suggested are an exhibition, balloon tour and screening throughtout

Cop16 but as for when and where were still waiting.

- They have to work with me next year, and I will use what i have learnt

for both the upcoming COP 16 and 17: I learnt that in Africa Climate

Change is not known and people have no desire to learn about it

because they have other problems but if you find a link between climate

change and their probems you can actually show them how important

the climate is for all our futures. i want to educate them about this

during cop16 so that when cop17 comes to RSA they will understand

what exactly is going on which will enable us to mobilize better and put

pressure on our own government to fight for a deal.

Page 26: Annexes Part 2 - WAVEwave.greenpeace.org/waveV2public/sites/default/files/attachments... · power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place

*Potential: - I think the solar solution work particularly for youth work is extremely

important as not only is it a way to help our own environment but the

youth are fascinated by it making them want to pursue it as a career

and again highlighting to the governments the economic growth

potential of a clean and green future

- Credibility, trustful, mobilization and making the climate issue more

cool.

**Perspectives: - Of course I am interested to work with SolGen, more especially for the

university students in South Africa and other african countries, I believe it

could help us mobilize but campaigns seem to think not. She said that it

was too early and that we had no capacity for such projects.

Pedro (Brazi l ) B Solar youth project not yet realized – big interest Integration in NRO: SolGen was adopted as a project by Brazil for the countdown to Copenhagen but there is no official SolGen group or project. Integrated in campaigns; project on getting

Recommended Project: - Aims: -

Added values, results, effects: (youth solar project not yet realized, see rather under enabling factors and potential)

Enabling factors: Regarding youth work generally: - The young people

are big enthusiasts,

they really want to

take care of the

forests, they are open

for new solutions and

multiply them - and

the future will be

created by them. Sons

and daughters

influence their parents

with good practices.

Working with youth is

fundamental, they are

the hope and the

future: They can think

different about things

and ways to act.

Impeding factors: - We don’t have a

youth departement, so

we have to transform

the material for adults

to make it usable for

young people and kids

as well.

Needs: - The office, support from SolGen, YSC and GPI, the mobilization of

youth in the street and on internet.

- We need first of all know-how, because the question is new and we

don’t have a lot of material. We need the know-how from YSC and

SolGen that can help us by showing how to work with youth, how to

mobilize in the street, in the internet (which is very important to young

people).

Suggestions / Measures for improvement: (not discussed) Plans for 2011: - We would like to make solar energy more popular, for example by

going with young people into favelas and poor communities, to show

the potential of the sun with installations. There is the program “my

house, my life” - I would like to include solar energy in it.

It’s an opportunity for GP to show how a different development is

possible. In Brazil is growing economically and getting more important.

We can show, that Brazil does not depend on dirty energies to develop

thousands of petitions and letters from youth for Our Climate, Our Future, Your Decision campaign: Related with coming big events, invitation to solar training in Mexico, want to be prepared and start planning youth solar activities during events. Youth involved: - Ongoing Projects: - Actually we

have about 300

young

volunteers in 8

groups.

-

- Of course there are

always difficulties. But

the work with young

people is easier than

with older people:

Because the youth

worries more about

the future and is more

open for new solutions

than the older people.

GP in Brazil

understands this. The

majority of the GP

supporters in Brazil

are young people.

Regarding youth solar

projects:

- With solar youth

activities you can

mobilize a lot of young

people as volunteers.

Because in Rio for

example the

Amazonian forest is

very far from the daily

reality, so the work

with a solar panel is

much more direct and

concrete.

- Brazil has the possibility of a clean future.

We install solar collectors in communities to show how renewable

energy works. And we organize discussions.

*Potential: - It’s important for communication, fundraising and campaign. In a

country like Brazil, with such a huge potential of renewable energy and

such a little exploration of it, it’s important to make the use of renewable

energy more popular. This does not happen today. The best place for

solar energy in Germany is similar to Santa Catarina in Brazil - which has

the worst conditions in Brazil for solar energy.

- The majority of the population lives in favelas and uses electric water

heaters to shower - which are a big problem in Brazil, because they

need a lot of energy and normally everybody uses them at the same

time. Besides the ecological problem, in Brazil this is as well a social

problem, because energy is very expensive: The money for light and

electric shower are the biggest part of the domestic economics - so if

the households don’t need to spend their money for it, they can use it

for other things.

- The events are a very good opportunity, to show the hole world how

much potential Brazil has got - and how few is used of it, as well in

comparison with other countries.

**Perspectives: (not yet asked) - Without SolGen or the YSC we would continue, but the work would be

more difficult.Support in finances and an exchange of know-how and

experiences would be good to start our work and it would make us

stronger. That’s why a collaboration with SolGen would be great.

Regarding ongoing work with youth in general: - know-how exchange - training and capacity building - advice from experienced people - human resources - support from campaigner, YSC, others - support for proposal development - financial support - better infrastructure - possibility to order materials or documents for practical activities and child or youth specific campaign material - overcome obstacles in GP structure Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: Regarding ongoing work with youth: - There are only very limited resources in the office (human resources, budget etc), but everybody tries to contribute as much as possible. - From the international level we would really need:

! a coordinator or somebody who cares and focuses on youth group work

! budget is always crucial

! international know-how sharing - Nationally we need a coordinator/ supervisor for the youths. Integration in international GP work: A program is needed in which there is a better connection to other international youths -> this way they can see what else is happening around the globe. Lessons Learned: Regarding ongoing work with youth: - Give the youth more freedom, let them decide what they want to focus on – otherwise things will not work out. - Sometimes young people are over ambitious, so somebody is needed as a supervisor to avoid disappointment if the goals are too high and cannot be reached. At the moment we train the groups, in a second step the groups will extend their areas and make their own projects. *Potential: Regarding youth solar projects: - At the moment there are only youth groups in Istanbul, but we need to have youth active in other parts of Turkey, too. It will add value to a campaign:

! youth as the future generation and decision makers of tomorrow cannot be ignored

! Youth will be multipliers in their universities and effect their universities directly

Enabling factors: - Here in the USA it´s part of a larger push, so we got support from media and climate team (1 each), several staff on ground and one graphic designer But: can be done pretty low costs – most expensive will be production of materials; couple of 100 US$ - The campaign story was important -> time of the event was very crucial and the communication of why it is important to do

Impeding factors: Regarding recommended project: (not yet asked) Regarding youth work: - Constant turn over/ reviving and interest change – but this is normal with young people - GP USA specific: trying to develop a program can be a challenge as the youth/ volunteers department is not as big as other departments…

Needs: Regarding youth work (aim: center activities on campuses, see suggestions): - Stories, know-how and exchange from other experienced and successful people on campus tactics. Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: Regarding youth work: - For a success at least in GP USA the activities should be centered on the campus communities, rather than to communicate off the campuses. In the past the campus communities have been very strong and very good in lobbying. - Volunteer coordination should be made a priority on international level (GPI) - GP USA has a good recruitment system – could be shared Plans for 2011: - *Potential: - The coordination, sharing of ideas and info of the volunteer coordinators on international level could be improved. communication with decision makers in building something for the future Regarding work with youth generally: - Brings new people in organization - To get young people involved, to teach and engage them is an investment for life time - Young people are the future politicians - Young people will be stuck with decisions of today - > they are very effective messengers

the activity now; communication externally to volunteers

coordinate across offices should be explored, in this Solar Generation should also be shared with other volunteer coordinators. The volunteer coordinators should have more driving force, leadership for this is needed to make the best out of it. **Perspectives: - I like to collarborate with solar gen when possible, but the US office campaigns don't always line up with what solar gen is up to. So it makes it difficult to work on the same thing if the campaign isn't running that particular. - In general, i'm supportive of solar gen and the idea of coordinating youth programs. - I don't think it's doable to engage at a higher level than we do now - which is engaging on activities that fit in with our campaign work, like COP work. For us, the larger coordination of the volunteer work (including youth) is a big priority. It's an opportunistic thing for us if we work with SolGen or do solar projects this point - To do more solar solutions work it would have to be part of the campaign. And right now, the climate work in the us is focused on fighting coal power. All resources are being poured into targeting local coal plants. It’s unlikely at this stage that people would be interested to include it (as solution) in the campaign. I think it's a good idea, but the politics are sooooo behind here, that we need to focus on that first.

Bi lge (Turkey) B Since: Integration in NRO: Normally the youth activities are integrated into the campaigns; the volunteers and actions coordinator talks

Recommended Project: - Aims: -

Added values, results, effects: Regarding youth work:- - Future generation, they will be on the planet longer - Fit the image of GP: young, active - They have a different point of view, different ideas and approaches, they fight for their own future, - Youth are more reliable with politicians

Enabling factors: -

Impeding factors: Regarding work with youth: - due to human resources reasons there is no capacity for further youth involvement. - Funding is a mayor problem for youth work. At the moment the volunteers and actions coordinator is supporting the youth team.

Needs: - Advice from experienced person (who preferebly visits Turkey for some months) - Budget - Know-how exchange - Find out what the office is committed to give with regard to youth work Suggestions / Measures for Improvement: Regarding work with youth: - We need a way to be more effective with short-term people (how to incorporate them usefully) and to train the long-term youth better. - Higher quality and more trainings for youth team is needed (so far they only got one project management training); at the moment there is too much direction work done by me, this can be shifted - International level: if there is an intention to focus on youth, this would

Page 33: Annexes Part 2 - WAVEwave.greenpeace.org/waveV2public/sites/default/files/attachments... · power, they li 26 solar panels to the top, arrange them in two rows and attach them in place

to the youth team, they decide together what they plan to do. VolCord is reflecting back to the campaigners what are the youths plans. Initially SolGen was a project developed with a tog an external volunteer group. They are currently adopting it as a project for their GP youth. Youth involved: - The youth teams consists of +/- 20 youths, 15-22 years old (majority 17/18 years old; all in Istanbul) some of them are very committed, others only join GP for a short while. Ongoing Projects: -

- Have good energy - High media output - Help selling a campaign very effectively (-> experience from Copenhagen: We had a huge media output with a relatively small activity (40.000 signatures) -> youth work has a very high potential and with little effort has a big effect. Best speeches always come from youth.)

- The work with universities is not going very well, due to funding problems. - Campaigners sometimes don´t know the potential of youths (and volunteers), - A lot of improvisation

have a trickle-down effect and automatically we could better work with youths. If nothing chances we will have to continue the way we work now, on the same level (about 20 youths) Plans for 2011: - The youth groups have not made any plans for 2011 yet, at the moment they focus on oil and probably will continue with this in 2011. *Potential: - There is a very high potential for youth work (details see added values, results, effects), but: see impeding factors. **Perspectives: (not yet asked) -

Alex (Nether lands) A (Coordinator Education Unit) Since: Integration in NRO: … Youth involved: - GP NL is focussing on Greenteams and kids work rather than on youth work. (see comments under impeding factors) Apart from Greenteam work GP NL offered excursions on the Sirius for schools (2,5 hour trips), but due to a lack of interest by schools this was stopped recently. Ongoing Projects: In the past 10 years there were no Solar Generation activities. About

Recommended Project: - Aims: -

Added values, results, effects: - To Alex´s understanding youth work CAN contribute to campaigns. Youths were sent to join meetings and conferences in the past and shed a different light on these meetings. - The media output depends on the effort which is put into it. With Greenteams it is always difficult to have a media output, with youths it is slightly easier. -

Enabling factors: - -

Impeding factors: Regarding youth work in general: - At the moment however, the Greenteam work is run at a low profile as the management team advised to stop all kids and youths work in GP NL in March 2010 as to their understanding there is no direct contribution to campaigns. GP NL is now waiting for the boards decision on this issue (hoping they don´t follow the advise so that youth and kids work can start/ go on). - Problems concerning youth work were that the youths were ex-/ grown up Greenteam kids who were willing to do some activities and support GP. But there is no pure youth program going on. This might change in the future (focus will be put also on the 15-18 years old) – depending on the decision of the board. -

Added values, results, effects: - -

Enabling factors (for youth work/ SolGen): - a very good training with a good trainer (training after skill-share), this helped really a lot for with regard to our work

Impeding factors (for youth work/ SolGen): - lacking support from the forest campaign unit - unfortunately they do not realize the potential of the youths (Ashov) - coordination between NRO to international - the relation between NRO and international needs to be more clear, SGI needs more authority (some things didn’t work out the way they were first planned) - Differences in cultural aspects - many things which work in Europe don't necessarily work in SEA, an example is the solar soccer, which will not work in Indonesia. The blue print does not work. - limited resources (as

Needs: - support in terms of expertise -> trainings-skill-shares-trainings, methods (how to work with youths in general -> Europe has more experience with that), - solar panel installation - volunteer management system (how does this work in other offices) -> collection of docs about existing V-MS and practical examples - technical assistance/ technology -> Experts/ trainers - Youth Training Modules, environment knowledge modul/silabus - funding support Suggestions /Measures for Improvement:

- Risk of manipulation, instrumentalisation of young volunteers by not offering them a serious and good follow-up -> Invitation would be good, it could be internship too, but with concrete program

- Ashov has big, mid-term plans with youth in forests: plan to work with high schools -> curriculum development (environment), university movement "green community" development -> YSC become facilitator for it, it could be student exchange, YSC offering the curriculum or create project together with green community in universities

- It is a pitty that the significance and potential of the green club, a big indonesian organization, is not seen. -> Create project together with green club in the field

Plans for 2011: - *Potential:

coordinator together! Not in accordance with review questionnaire!

the focus is at the moment on forests there are not enough resources for our working focus left) - Resources allocation issues: we only have limited resources which have to be allocated to projects efficiently and effectively to reach the campaign goals. And for the short term objectives accomplishment, maybe we haven't seen youth engagement as a priority, given Indonesia's specific characteristic and culture. - The relation from GP SEA/ NRO to YSC is not clear and this makes our work more difficult, the position on YSC in the NRO is not clarified. The Campaign Director is the key to YSC, the Solar Generation international coordinators don't have authority for decisions (that's ok), but there is generally too much hyrachie and too many different perspectives on YSC -
