AVR Committees – We need you!

The Annehurst Village Residents Association relies on resident’s input for planning of

maintenance, budgets and events. Currently the AVRA Board of Trustees is looking for

assistance in the planning of fiscal year 2018. If you have a special talent or just want to get

involved, there are four committees where your help would be appreciated.

The Maintenance Committee uses the current engineering study as a basis to decide what replacements, improvements and purchases for the common property (the Annehurst Pool) should

be recommended to the finance committee. If you have a mechanical or construction experience, this would be a good committee for you.

The Finance Committee analyzes the prior year’s actual numbers as compared to the set budget and makes budgetary recommendations back to the AVRA Board of Trustees. Anyone that is good with numbers or has managed a small or large business, this would be a good fit.

The Communication Committee is responsible for development of the newsletter and posting current topics on social media. The AVRA Board realizes the importance of good communication

and there has been a goal to publish regular newsletters. We need to find an editor who with assistance of reporters can assemble articles in a timely manner for distribution.

The Event Committee plans the annual events that take place throughout the year. Annehurst has a

variety of events that include a visit with Santa, the Egg hunt, the 5th grade regatta, the Steak and Ale, End of Summer Celebration and sometimes a OSU Football event. These events make

Event Committee – Karen Spiller - [email protected] – or 614-570-2964 (texts preferred)

The AVRA Board of Trustees realizes that everyone has a busy schedule. Please consider

volunteering for a committee. These committees are a vital part of what makes Annehurst a

CONCATO FAMILY

CHICKEN

CACCITORE

My grandfather Francis

arrived at Ellis Island in the early 1920's from

Northern Italy. His sisters were great cooks and

taught my German grandmother how to cook

some of their favorite

dishes. This is one of them, and I love it. I

hope you enjoy it too.

8 chicken thighs, remove skin

(optional)

2 green peppers, chopped

2 onions, chopped

1 large package mushrooms,

sliced

1 small can tomato paste

1 16oz can chopped tomatoes

or 2 fresh tomatoes chopped

1 32oz box chicken broth

3 tbs olive oil

Flour, salt, pepper, onion

powder, garlic powder

Cook Chicken:

Dredge chicken thighs in flour mixture

Brown in olive oil electric skillet or large frying pan

Set aside

Make Sauce:

In same cooking pan combine peppers, onions

and mushrooms and sauté until tender. Add broth and tomato paste, alternately, to

make a sauce. Add tomatoes. Bring to a boil

then add chicken and cook on medium – low heat until chicken is cooked through

and sauce thickens slightly, at least 45 minutes.

Serve with polenta, mashed

potatoes or rice and parmesan cheese.

Nextdoor and Annehurst

Many Annehurst Residents are registered members of the Nextdoor online social network. Nextdoor is not affiliated with the AVRA but is a great tool to communicate with neighbors. Below is an excerpt of guidelines from their website that should be followed when participating online. This information plus links to more detailed information can be found on their homepage under Profile and Settings / Community Guidelines.

Nextdoor Community Guidelines (reprinted from Nextdoor.com)

Our mission is to provide a trusted platform where neighbors work together to build stronger, safer, happier communities, all over the world. We want all neighbors to feel welcome, safe, and respected when using Nextdoor. For that reason, we've developed a set of Community Guidelines describing what behaviors are – and are not – allowed on Nextdoor. The crux of our Guidelines can be boiled down to one simple statement: Everyone here is your neighbor. Please treat each other with respect.

We rely on you, the neighbors who make up the Nextdoor community, to report content that violates these Guidelines. Violating the Guidelines has consequences, which may include removal of content, suspension of posting privileges, or even a permanent ban from Nextdoor. Because of the diversity of people in any neighborhood, please keep in mind that while something may be disagreeable to you, it may not violate our Community Guidelines.

Be helpful, not hurtful The heart and soul of Nextdoor are the helpful conversations that happen between neighbors. When conversations turn disagreeable, everyone on Nextdoor suffers. Our Guidelines prohibit posts and replies that discriminate against, attack, insult, shame, bully, or belittle others.

Don’t use Nextdoor as a soapbox Nextdoor is a communication platform that allows neighbors to mobilize and get stuff done like never before. However, favorite causes that are pushed too hard, political campaigning, and personal views on controversial issues will inevitably rub one’s neighbors the wrong way. We rely on our members to report those who are over-posting, campaigning, and posting or ranting about controversial, non-local issues.

Promote local businesses and commerce the right way On Nextdoor, we support local businesses and encourage neighbors to share helpful information about their favorite businesses and services. We also encourage neighbors to buy, sell, and give things away. Nextdoor is actively working on solutions for local businesses to participate in their Nextdoor neighborhood.

Use your true identity Nextdoor is a network for you and the people who live in your local community. To that end, using your true identity and honestly representing yourself are key parts of being a Nextdoor member.

Keep it clean and legal Keep all content and activity family-friendly and legal, and adhere to our rules about regulated goods and services.

NOVEMBER FOOD PANTRY SUGGESTIONS

One tradition of the Annehurst neighborhood is the Piranhas Swim Team. The team is fast, and the team is looking to purchase a Dolphin electronic timer. This will enable us to put away our stopwatches. The teams goal is to raise $3,000 by

next May. Recently the team raised $1,300 through participation and donations to their own 5K race. Stay tuned for upcoming fundraising events, such as a pancake “flipping” breakfast in conjunction with the Annehurst Egg Hunt and monthly restaurant dine-in nights!

Keep Your Pets Safe

Winter in Central Ohio brings many challenges. From cold weather, cloudy days, snow and ice to long hours in the house...yuck! Every year I always send out tips for how to take care of your animals during bad winter weather. If everyone uses common sense it really isn’t that hard. The most important rule of thumb is: if it is too cold for you, it is too cold for your animals to be outside for very long. Cats and dogs can get frostbite very quickly. Ears and paws are the most vulnerable parts. It only takes a few minutes for the damage to take place. Please keep your pets indoors if it is below freezing.

Tips for keeping your dog safe include a coat or sweater for short haired dogs, short walks, wiping their feet after walking on road salt, keeping them dry, and not letting them be outside for more than a few minutes when it is freezing.

Make exercise fun for your pets when they are stuck inside. Do enrichment just like they do with the zoo animals. Treats hidden around the house, kong toys filled with dog safe treats, rotating toys every couple of days or play dates with neighbor dogs. For the kitties, play with cat toys that make them chase and climb. They need stimulating exercise too!!

Another fun thing to do in the winter is find a class or activity that you and your dog can attend together. For example, obedience, agility classes, therapy dog training, or just take them to one of the many dog friendly pet stores for something different. Just make sure your dog is friendly and is up to date on vaccinations.

Stay safe this winter!! Amy Carley
