President’s Message

September 2017

Dear NNYPNO Members,

Fall is almost upon us and it is time to welcome and update you on the happenings within the organi-zation. Hopefully, you had a wonderful summer with time to rejuvenate and get ready for all the activities fall and the “school” year bring for all of us.

Let me update you on news from NNYPNO:

We received our 501(c) (3) IRS classification as a charitable organization in May 2017. Then we were able to file for our New York State sales tax exemption. It was received in July 2017. Now that we have received our classification you can deduct any donation to NNYPNO as charitable. We will also no longer pay sales tax resulting in a sizable savings to the organization at our dinner meetings alone. As a charitable organization we cannot support (endorse) any political candidate or legislation. We can update our members on the current status of legislation affecting nursing and you are free to support anyone or any leg-islation as a private citizen.

The “BS in 10” bill we have been watching and reporting on to the membership for years has finally passed in both houses. The bill is on its way to Governor Cuomo’s desk for signature. I will be sending out information on this legislation. IF you personally support the legislation and would like to be part of the ef-fort to get it passed then send a letter to Governor Cuomo stating your support. Along with the information on the legislation you will receive a sample letter of support to the governor. Again, let me stress, the deci-sion to support the legislation is your personal choice as a nurse and resident of this state.

Your Board has decided increasing membership will be one of NNYPNO’s goals for this year. To support this endeavor our October dinner meeting will offer you a special chance to bring a guest. Your guest will have the opportunity to enjoy the meeting, educational presentation and dinner for half price. When you register for dinner there will be an additional selection “Invite a guest for half price”. Choose that selection and pay $52.50 for both yourself and your guest. It will be a dynamite pro-gram and offer you the chance to introduce your friends and colleagues to NNYPNO. Support your nursing organization and introduce us to others.

Our new NNYPNO Membership Tri-fold is ready for you. Make sure to pick one up at the October dinner meeting. Thank you to Karen Henchey and Kathy Morgan for their work on the content. Deb Wolff gets our thanks for her editing, graphics and addition of the photos. Teamwork gets it done. Make sure you thank these members personally.

As I begin my term as your President let me say two things:

I am open to your suggestions, comments and help. Contact me at [email protected] or on my cell phone 518-542-0759.

This is your nursing organization. Be part of making it strong. Attend meetings. Join a commit-tee; it is the best way to meet new colleagues and make new friends. You’ll be amazed at our nursing community in the capital district.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the October meeting.

Respectfully,

Jane S. Falvo

President

“Burn Brightly Without Burning Out” SPEAKER: Kimberly Richards, RN, NC-BC President, Self-Care Academy

As a nurse and an executive recruiter, Kim became increasingly aware of the “revolving door” of nurses in health care facilities. After interviewing hundreds of nurses, Kim noticed a common theme was emerging. Nurses were expressing signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, a debilitating phenomenon that is caused by years of

built up emotional residue. By combining her passion for nursing, fitness and coaching as well as her extensive re-search on the science of self-care, Kim created the components of Self-Care Academy, LLC, a comprehensive pro-gram that is dedicated to improving employee engagement, relationships with peers and creating an optimum healing environment for people. She is an accomplished author and nurse leader.

2017 Annual Report

NNYPNO Nominating Committee

To: Susan Birkhead, 1st Vice-President appointee

From: Ann Bentzen, Nominating Committee chair

Committee members: Ann Bentzen, Kathy Dorsey, Valerie Igoe, Tara Burke

Committee goal: to seek and obtain qualified member nominees for elected board office posi-tions and for the upcoming year nomination committee membership.

12/1/16: Open board and nominating committee positions requiring nominees announced by the committee chair at the membership meeting.

1/16/17: Committee discussions took place via email to review positions requiring nominees for elections in May 2017, and to develop a plan for future meetings and information dissemi-nation to the membership.

2/2/17: Committee met to discuss purpose and goals of the committee, as well as roles of each committee member. Positions open for vote announced as follows: 1st Vice-President, Secre-tary, (3) Directors-at-Large, and 2 Nominating committee members (2018 election cycle). A current list of members eligible to vote (those with dues paid to date) was divided among the 4 committee members. Each member was asked to email all on their list to apprise them of open positions for the upcoming 2017/2018 year and to seek nominations for office. Open positions for the May 2017 election were announced at the membership meeting held on that evening. Committee members Kathy Dorsey, Tara Burke, and Valerie Igoe were present at the commit-tee meeting and were introduced to the membership during the business meeting portion of the membership meeting.

4/6/2017: Committee met to discuss progress with the process of seeking nominations for of-fice. Members present: Ann Bentzen and Kathy Dorsey. Tara Burke and Valerie Igoe were ex-cused. Nominations to date were discussed. A sample ballot for discussion was shared, and feedback was obtained. An announcement regarding open positions was made during the gen-eral business portion of the membership meeting held that evening. The following nomina-tions were received as of 4/6/17: 1st Vice-President: Susan Birkhead; Secretary: MaryJane Ar-aldi; Directors-at-Large: Neda Narkiewicz, Jackie Priorie, Martha Desmond, Karen Bianco, and Linda D’Arcangelis; Nominating committee: Amy Speanburg.

The completed election slate and candidates’ biographical summaries was presented to the NNYPNO Board of Directors for an email vote of approval during the last week of April. The Committee hoped to present more than one candidate for the 1st Vice President, Secretary, and Nominating committee positions, however was unsuccessful. The ballot and candidates’ bio-graphical summaries were approved by the board. Dissemination to the voting membership was 4/28/17, with directions to members to return the completed ballot by 5/12/17. Returned results were compiled and sent to tellers Marie Kaye and Barbara Orekondy for counting 5/15/17.
