stands out as boldly as it once did, the graduate who has an added postgraduate

qualification would stand out for employment or career advancement. Having a

postgraduatequalificationalso indicatesacertain levelofcommitmentandenthusiasm

for gaining knowledgeand success in a chosen field,which canbe very appealing to

currentorpotentialemployers.

In this issue, UTP Quarterly highlights the University’s new offering – MBA-Energy

Management. We have Associate Professor Dr Azrai Abdullah sharing the aspiration,

conceptanddescriptionoftheprogrammeandthebenefitsofhavinganicheMBAfor

managementortechnicalprofessionals.

Henry Murray, an American psychologist who taught for over 30 years at Harvard

Universitysaidthattheneedforachievementmeansanindividual’sdesireforsignificant

accomplishment, mastering of skills, control or high standards. He quoted that that

achievementmeans“intense,prolongedandrepeatedefforts toaccomplishsomething

difficult.Toworkwithsinglenessofpurposetowardsahighanddistantgoal.Tohavethe

determinationtowin”.AtUTP,achievementsgivemotivationtotheacademicfaculty,staff

andstudentsalikeandforthis,thisissuealsosharesachievementsandaccomplishments

eitherinorganisingoratparticipatingin/atcompetitions,eventsorgames.Amongstthe

highlightsincludeSEDEX31;MOUwithInstituteofEngineersandAniseAsiaCloudSdn

Bhd; research collaborations with National Tsing Hua University Taiwan, University of

Brighton,UKandD3ChemicalsSdnBhd.

Not only in academics and research, the University also took its first bite of show

businesssuccesswith itsdebutgamelanalbumtitled“GatraPertama”.This is thefirst

evergamelanalbumproducedinMalaysiabyuniversitystudents.Thealbumhasalready

hitallmusicstoresandiTunes.

Whilecelebratingachievements,wearealsocommittedtodoingourpart inprospering

the community. Putting on smiles on 170 underprivileged children was not only a

memorableexperience,butalsohumbling.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) received its first cohort ofstudentswhoregisteredfortheoff-campus/September2013Masterof Business Administration in Energy Management (MBA-EM)programmeon7September2013.

TheSeptember2013MBA-EMcohortsees10scholars,whocomefromadiverseprofessionalbackground,enrolling intheprogramme.Theaverageprofessionalworkingexperienceamongthescholarsis8years,whoseaffiliationsincludecompaniesfromwithinandoutsideofPETRONASgroup.

During the programme’s registration and induction session atPETRONASPetroleumResourceCentre (PRC),UTPDeanofCentrefor Graduate Studies, Associate Professor DrMohd Fadzil Hassan,representingProfessor Ir.Dr.AhmadFadzilMohdHani,UTPDeputyViceChancellorofAcademic,describedtheMBA-EMprogrammeasanicheMBAprogrammesimilartothatofferedbySingapore’sNanyangTechnologyUniversity,butwitha fractionof the feeswhich is to thebenefitofstudents.TheMBA-EMprogrammeisthe7thpostgraduatetaught-courseprogrammeofferedbyUTP.

According to UTP Head of Management and Humanities (M&H)Department, Associate Professor Dr Azrai Abdullah, the MBA-EMprogramme has come a long way before its commencement andallpreparation toensure thehighqualityofprogrammedeliveryhasbeendonewell inadvance.Toensuretherelevancyandrobustnessof the curriculum, M&H Department has done numerous internalcurriculumreview,expertpanelworkshopsandindustrystakeholdersengagement.

Alsopresentat theevent towelcome thescholarswerePuanNellyFrancisShariah,HeadofEducationandLearning,HRM;En.AzaharMohd Noor, PRC Senior Manager; En. Ismail Isa, PRC Manager;Dr Lai FongWoon, UTPMBA-EMProgrammeManager, aswell aslecturersandstafffromUTPandPRC.

According to Dr Lai, the educational objective of the MBA-EM isto develop leaders who are competent in driving and sustainingglobal energy business.Dr Lai opines that the programme is highlyrelevant especially to those professionals who are in the technicalline,butareclimbingthecorporateladdersandneedtoacquiremoreknowledge on themanagerial expertise for the industry. Apart frombusinessexecutives,thisprogrammealsoaimsatattractingtoptalentcandidates from the energy sector along, with other professionalsservingthesectorsuchasbankersandlawyersalike.

This 50-credit hour, 20-month MBA-EM programme features adynamicandrobustcurriculum,which includes9businesscoreand5energymanagement specialisationmodules,namelyEnergyValueChain, Energy Management, Energy Technology and Innovation,Low Carbon Economy and Sustainability, Energy Regulations andPolicies. In addition, the programme structure also incorporatesbusiness research methodology, consultancy management andreport.Toenrichthelearningexperienceaswellastoprovideaglobalperspectivetoscholars,theMBA-EMprogrammeforgescollaborationwith the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) ofUniversity of Colorado at Boulder, USA, in which the 5 energymanagement specialisation modules will be delivered by RASEI’sprofessors.RASEI’sprofessorsare ledbyProfessorDrPaulKomor,whoin2007sharedintheNobelPeacePrizeawardedtoAlGoreandtheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange(IPCC).

All of the MBA-EM off-campus classes will be conducted over theweekends with the exception of 5 energy management modules,in which someweekday classeswill be involved. This arrangementwill facilitateworkingprofessionalsattending theclasses.All theoff-campusclasseswillbeheldatPRCasithasbeenappointedastheMBA-EM’sprogrammedeliverypartner.

At the same event another MoU was inked between UTP andAnise Asia Cloud Sdn Bhd. UTP will collaborate with Anise Asiato organise a competition known as Dis.Rupt.Edu at UniversitiTeknologiPETRONAS.Theeventisheldwiththeobjectivetocultivateinnovativenessamongtheuniversity’scommunity.Itwillshowcaseanarray of great projectsby students andcompanies andwill look forgreatpresenters,whomaycompeteforatriptotheUnitedStates.

Prof.Ir.Dr.AhmadFadzilBMohdHani,UTPDeputyViceChancellorofAcademic,inhisclosingspeechbelievedthatSEDEX31hasachievedits objective to aspire school children’s involvement in creative andinnovativeactivitiesaspartofextendingtheinnovativeculturetowardsthesurroundingcommunity,whichisalsoinlinewiththeGovernment’sinnovationinitiatives.Healsodeliveredtheprizestoallwinningteams.

1Malaysia KidsApart from design exhibitions, SEDEX 31 also conducted two newprogrammes.Onewasa learningprogrammeknownas“1MalaysiaKids”, aimed to create awareness of cultural diversity in Malaysiaand to enhance school children’s interest and passion in Science,MathematicsandTechnology through funandsimpleways.Anotheronewasindustrialsharingsession,aprogrammethatlinkedUTPwithmajorprofessionalsfromtheindustries.

Highlights

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) organised three simultaneousevents; theOpeningCeremonyof the31stScienceandEngineeringDesign Exhibition (SEDEX 31), MoU Signing Ceremony betweenUTP and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and MoU SigningCeremonybetweenUTPandAniseAsiaCloudSdnBhd,aspartofthe University’s efforts to realise its vision in becoming a leader inTechnologyEducationandCentreforCreativityandInnovation.

Thisyearmarkedthe31stScienceandEngineeringDesignExhibition(SEDEX 31). It serves as a platform for UTP students and staff toshowcase their creative and innovative ideas and designs to thecampus community. Since it was first held in 1997, the event hassuccessfully produced many inventions leading to new prototypes,researchmethodologiesandapproachesinvariousfieldsofexpertise.

The opening ceremony of SEDEX31was officiated by Ir. ChooKokBeng, President of Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). In hisspeech, Ir Choo Kok Beng said that Science, Engineering andTechnologyareessentialelements for thesuccessful implementationandmaintenanceof themany infrastructureprojectsneeded for thenation to achieve developed status by 2020. As Malaysia marchestowardsbecomingadevelopednation, the roleof youngengineers,becomes increasingly important. Thus, he urged that today’s youngaspiringengineerstoapplyinnovationintheirworkandstudy,tofindandcreatealternativeinnovationsandultimatelybecomethepioneersanddriversoftheseinnovations.

CollabarationLater, anMoUwas inked between IEM andUTP. The collaborationwith IEM will benefit UTP in many ways since IEM promotes andadvancesthescienceandprofessionofengineeringinalldisciplines.The society also facilitates the exchange of information and ideasrelated to engineering. Besides gaining recognition for engineeringexperiencesandprofessionalaccomplishments,UTPstudentsjoiningIEMwill also have access to awide network of fellow engineers in

Prof.MilivojeMKostic, a notable researcher and scholar fromNorthern IllinoisUniversitysharedthat themostchallenging issueofhuman-beings for thenextcenturyisenergy1.Theeverincreasingenergydemand,thethreatoffastdepletingenergyresourcesinrecenttimesandtheunconventionalresourcesrevolution–allhavecausedconcernsonsustainableenergysupplyworldwide.Closerathome,MalaysianGovernment,withtheexecutionoftheEconomicTransformationPlan(ETP),recognisedthat20%ofnational’sGDPisderivedfromoil,gasandenergysectors, and as such has included it as one of the 12 national key economicareas targeting to create52,000 jobs inwhich40%of thatwouldbequalifiedprofessionalssuchasengineers,geologistsandmanagersintheenergysector2.Under these circumstances, the oil, gas and energy industry, including relatedbusinesseswithinthevalue-chain,worldwide,requiresurgentneedformanagersand professionals who are not only competent and equipped with discerninginsights to business but also visionary in driving their respective businesseswithglobalperspectives.AssociateProfessor(AP)DrAzraiAbdullahsharestheUniversity’slatestoffering,MBA-EnergyManagement(MBA-EM)whichisaspiredtobecomeasolutionforleaderstosteertheenergyandrelatedsectors.

“Traditionally, an MBA is viewed as a general management degree for the corporate business world butsucha landscapehaschanged.AnicheMBAsuchasEnergyManagementhelpsexpandunderstanding,perspectives and insights while offering broad but relevant management skills and knowledge. In thisprogrammespecifically,uponcompletionoftheprogramme,thegraduatesshouldbeabletoanalysecurrentand emerging trends in the global energy sector to develop and implement effective energymanagementstrategiesforglobalsustainability;evaluatebusinessdecisionstoensureefficientandsustainablemanagementofresourcesandtheenvironment;andintegratemanagement,leadershipandbusinessprinciplestoperformstrategicrolesinenergymanagement.

“TheformatofaddingspecialistelectivestoastandardMBAensuresthatstudentsenjoythediversityofprofessionalnetworkingaswellasworkingwithagroupfocusedontheirparticularareaofbusiness”,APDrAzraielaborates.Healsoreassuresthatbecauseofthemeticulousdesign of the programme, professionals from various sectors likebanking and finance, institutions of higher learning, consultingcompanies,manufacturing,retail,marines,upstreamanddownstreambusinessofoilandgas,etcmaybenefitfromtheprogrammebecausethecornerstonetoitismanagement.

APDr Azrai also added that input from theMBACapstone Projectcouldbe thecatalyst forpostgraduate research forcommercialuse,industrial consulting work or for knowledge advancement at PhDlevels.

UTP’s MBA-EM is conducted in partnership with Renewable andSustainable Energy Institute of Colorado Boulder, USA (RASEI) asits modules delivery partner and PETRONAS Petroleum ResourceCentre(PRC)asitsprogrammedeliverypartner.Drawingsynergyfrominternational expertise and industry infrastructure, the programmeoffersunprecedentedleveragetopotentialcandidatesatRM50,000.00fortheentireprogramme.

For local candidates, the total fee can be offset from MyBrain15sponsoredbytheMalaysianGovernmentandtheenergymanagementspecialisation modules can be traded off as short course trainingprogrammes. In addition, some organisations regard the 5-dayseminarforeachspecialisationmoduleaspartofthestudyleaveforitsstaff.Thesearesomeof themanners inwhichtheprogrammeiscustomised in meeting busy professionals’ requirements besidescushioningabout60%ofthecostoftheprogramme.InPETRONASfor example, this programme has been recognised as one of thechannelsforitsStaffDevelopmentProgramme.Thestaffwhoenrolledforthisprogrammemaybenefitfromtheshortcoursetrainingandthestudyleavebenefits.

APDrAzrai saidhebelieved inadvocating twopillars in thedesignof anyprogrammeand specifically for thisMBA-EM: enterprise and

academic.Aprogrammeneedstobeeconomicallyviable.Inmanagingthecost, theUniversityestablishescloserelationshipwith itspartnerUniversitytoenablevisitingprofessorsincludingProfessorKomorwhoisaNobleLaureate toshare their expertiseandexperience.Havingtopnotchindustryandacademicauthoritieslendtherequiredmagnetto attract candidates. Conducting classes at PRC, KLCC is a pluspointwhichprovideseasyaccessforworkingprofessionals.

Regionally, aside from UTP, Nanyang Technological University,SingaporeincollaborationwithBINorwegianSchoolofManagement,Norway also runs anMBAprogrammewith fundamentals in energymanagement.

CurrentlythedepartmentistryingtoexpanditsreachtoQatar,OmanandKorea.“Wearebullishabouttheprospectsfromthesecountriesas we already have long standing reputation in undergraduateprogrammes, research collaborations and industry-academicspartnerships. Our programme contents, industry connection,infrastructure and competitive fees would be conducive factors toattractmorecandidatestothisprogramme”.

Atpresent,UTP’sMBA-EMhas26studentsunderitsenrollmentfrom2batchesofintakes.

Moving forward, the University is all geared for its first batch tograduate in 2015 for the first convocation. With this first batch ofgraduates, UTP would be eligible for international recognition withTheAssociationtoAdvanceCollegiateSchoolsofBusiness(AACSB).Locally,accreditationfromtheEnergyCommissionwouldalsomeanrecognitionbyPublicServicesDepartmenttosendpublicservantsascandidatesforUTPMBA-EM.

UTP Renews Collaboration with University of Brighton, UK Universiti TeknologiPETRONAS (UTP) has renewed its collaborationwith University of Brighton in the areas of staff developmentprogramme, student exchange programme, joint research anddevelopment as well as teaching and learning programme throughthe signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). To markthis occasion, a signing ceremonywas held on 4 July 2013 at theUniversity of Brighton Campus in United Kingdom. The MoU wassigned by UTP Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul RahimHj Hashim and University of Brighton Vice Chancellor, Prof. JulianCrampton. Also present as witnesses were Prof. Dr. Abdul RashidAbdul Aziz, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation, UTPandProf.StuartLaing,DeputyViceChancellor,UniversityofBrighton.

The renewalof thiscollaborationsignals thaton-going researchandacademic activities between the two universities have been fruitfulandhaveproducedsuccessful results in the targetedareas.AJointWorkingCommitteewasalsoestablishedtooverseethecollaborativeefforts between the two institutions and ensure their effectiveimplementation.

Global CCS Institute Hands Over Carbon Capture Storage Technology To UTPGlobalCarbonCaptureandStorage (CCS) Instituteofficiallyhandedover the Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) Technology to UniversitiTeknologi PETRONAS (UTP), at a special ceremony held on 20August 2013 at PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. UTPwasrepresentedby itsViceChancellorDatuk Ir (Dr)AbdulRahimHjHashimwhileGlobalCCS Institutewas representedby itsCapacityDevelopmentManager,Ms.AliceGibson.

ThehandoverceremonywasaresultofalicensingsigningagreementbetweenGlobalCCSInstituteandUTPinMay2013.Thisceremonymarkedahistoricoccasionfortheuniversity,astheCCSTechnologyreceivedwillbeutilisedforeducationalmaterialsandsupportrelatedtocarboncaptureandstoragefortheuniversitystaffandstudents,aswellasforPETRONASemployees.

In his speech, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim said that the technologywilldefinitelybeusefulandbeneficialfortheuniversityasitisdirectlyrelated to its current academic and research activities at UTP’sResearchCentreforCarbonDioxideCapture(RCCO2C),establishedin 2011. The RCCO2C is parked under one of UTP’s nineMissionOrientedResearch areas namelyCarbonDioxideManagement. Theother Mission Oriented Research include Enhanced Oil Recovery,DeepwaterTechnology,NanotechnologyandHybridEnergySystem.

Global CCS Institute, a global organisation, was first established inAustralia in 2009. The aim of the Institute is to help accelerate thedevelopment, demonstration and deployment of CCS globally;through knowledge sharing activities, fact-based influential adviceandadvocacy,andworktocreatefavourableconditionstoimplementCCS.Thedevelopmentofcarboncaptureandstoragetechnologyisan on-going effort byGlobal CCS Institute in its attempt to reduceemissions into the atmosphere resulting from the use of differentenergysources.

UTP Shares Joy With 170 Underprivileged Children On6July2013,170underprivilegedchildrenweretreatedtofunandgamesattheSunwayLostWorldofTambunThemePark,Ipoh.Theywereallsmileswhentheyvisitedtheminizooandplayedgamesatthewaterparkandrides.

ThemultiracialchildrenwereselectedfromfourorphanagesnearIpoh,namelyPraiseHome,AsramaAnakYatim&WargaMiskinBudiMuliaNurulHuda, Pusat JagaanAnak-anakYatimdanMiskinNurul ImanandTheSalvationArmyBoys’House. The eventwasorganisedbyUTP Corporate Services Department, as part of UTP’s CorporateSocialResponsibility (CSR) initiatives to engagewith its surroundingcommunity.

AspartofUTP’seffortstohelppromotehealthylifestylestothefuturegenerations,eachchildrenwasgivenaskippingropebeforeenteringthewaterpark.TogetherwithUTPstaff,theydidaten-minuteskipping

exercisewhichwasequivalent toa45-minute runningworkout.TheskippingropesweresponsoredbyRotaryClubofKintaandMILO.

“The children were very excited and happy. Even though ourorphanageisnotthatfarfromthethemepark,thechildrenrarelygettheopportunity toenter itasmostof themcouldn’tafford it. Ihopemanyorganisationswill emulateUTP for alwaysbeing thoughtful oftheneedy,”saidSweeChoo,oneof theguardiansatTheSalvationArmyBoys’House.

On hand to personally greet the guests were UTP Vice Chancellor,Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj. Hashim, accompanied by his wife,Prof. Datin Dr. Suzana Sulaiman and UTPManagement CommitteeMembers.

With anArabian settingconcept, this year’s celebrationwas sharedwith the university’s local communities, state government officials,mediapersonnelaswellasstafffromPETRONASOperatingUnitsinPerak.

Donned in their traditional and Arabian style dress, guests weretreated with an array of modern and traditional delicacies suchas roasted lamb, prawn fritters, porridge, lemang, ketupat andrendang, in hawker-style stalls. While enjoying their dinner, guestswereentertainedwithtraditionalandmodernMalaysongsaswellasEnglish,byUTP’sin-houseperformersandband.

Several activities were held for the guests to liven the mood ofAidilfitri such as lucky draws, Best Dressed Competition, BestGroupPerformance andBest PhotoCompetition. In addition, therewere presentations to staff for academic excellence awards, sports

“Gatra Pertama” – A Gamelan Debut

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) Gamelan Group, SanggarKirana, launched a gamelan album, entitled “Gatra Pertama” on18 September 2013, at a special event in Marriot Putrajaya. ThelaunchingmarksahistoriceventfortheuniversityasitisthefirstevergamelanalbumproducedinMalaysiabyuniversitystudents.

The album was also launched to celebrate Sanggar Kirana’saccomplishments throughout its 11th year of establishment. Thegrouphasmade the university proudbyperforming at national andinternational levelsfortheuniversity,PETRONAS,InstitutesofHigherEducationMalaysiaandstategovernmentoccasions.Apartfromthat,UTPgamelangrouphasalsoparticipated invariousmusic festivals,concerts and competitions, such as the International JavaneseGamelan Festival Bandung Indonesia, International GamelanFestival Yogyakarta Indonesia, Festival Gamelan Malaysia UniversitiKebangsaan Malaysia, Tapestry of Colours at Dewan FilharmonikPETRONASandNationalMalayGamelanCompetition.

Sanggar Kirana was established in February 2002 with the aim ofpromotingMalaysianculture,developingtraditionalmusicandinstillingarts and music skills among students. The group consists of 32members,underthebatonofEn.ZaidinMohamedNorandEnTeukuUmarIlany.

The albumwas recorded inHani Budi Studio, Batu Pahat Johor injust nine days. It features a compilation of songs that capture thebeautyandauthenticityofgamelanmusic.Itcompriseselevensongs;nineareespeciallycomposedforSanggarKiranawhiletheremainingtwoaretraditionalMalaygamelansongs.All tracks in thealbumareperformedbySanggarKirana.

ThealbumwillbeavailableatallmusicstoresandoniTunes,startingnextmonth.AtRM29.90 each, proceeds from the albumwill go toSanggarKirana’sfundforthegroup’sfuturedevelopment.

On 20 September 2013, Sanggar Kirana made a special liveappearanceatMalaysiaHariIni(MHI),TV3.Thegroupperformedfourtracks from their newly released album, namely “Dayung Sampan”,“Sanggar Kirana”, “Susuk Angin” and “Isang” with liveliness andvigorousness.

In an interview with MHI, En. Mohamed Noor Rosli Baharom, UTPDeputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni said that theproductionofthisalbumisatestamenttoUTP’svisionofproducingwell-roundedengineeringandtechnologystudentswhonotonlyexcelinacademic,butarealsoabletoappreciateandupholdthevalueofMalaysia’sartsandculture.Healsohopedthatwiththelaunchingofthisalbum,itwillhelptopreservegamelanmusicandinstilthepublic’sinterests, especially the young generation, to appreciate gamelanmusic.
