CVI’s Oscillating Piston Technology
Constant piston motion keeps • sample fresh• sensor clean
No seals, one moving part
Proprietary electronics measure absolute viscosity from piston cycle time. Complies with ASTM D7483
Fluid enters measurement chamber
Temperature detector
Trailing coil tracks pistonelectro-magnetically
Lead coil sets up magnetic field to drive the piston
Coils switch when piston moves by detect point

Strengths of the Oscillating Piston Technique
• Known Accuracy (ASTM D7483)• Rugged Construction • Minimal Installation Costs• Low Maintenance Interval• Self Cleaning• Stable - Holds Calibration • Small Volume• Measurement and Report software provides
statistically verifiable results• Fast results• The ONLY ASTM recognized method that utilizes the
same technique for both process and lab applications
9
CVI Applications in Black Oils
Refining Operations – production control blending– Asphalt Refining – Lube Oil Refining
• Light, Medium, Spindle, Heavy– Combustible Oils - Diesel & HFO Refining –Viscosity drives in-line blending to hit quality
targets efficiently
Service Operations– Power Generation - Burning HFO
Viscosity control optimizes burn efficiency– Lube Oil monitoring in rotating equipment
Viscosity monitoring prevents premature equipment failures
10
Meeting QA Challenges
• Monitor with ASTM consistent instrumentation > in-line and in the lab
• Reduce labor costs with in-line real time monitoring with periodic lab checks
• Meet tighter product quality standards• Utilize simple to install in-line process instrumentation
• Lower maintenance costs – self cleaning sensors
CVI Viscometers use the same technology for lab & process – all ASTM consistent, producing accurateand repeatable results
11
CVI Monitoring Black Oils
In-Line Applications:• Installed in bypass lines with conditioning to meet lab results: • - flow control• - temperature control (insulated, heat traced, etc.)• - particulate filtering (in some cases)• Controlling temperature is essential for accurate viscosity information
(or TCV is used if process temperature is different from lab)• Some bypass lines routed through temperature control systems
Lab Applications:• Refineries are now using CVI lab viscometers for quality checks

Challenges of On-Line Viscosity Measurement
16
Conclusion: Real Time Compliments Lab
Internationally accepted lab tests are required Lab challenges:
Samples are not necessarily representative of instantaneous production.
Samples are subject to off-gassing and other changes between the time they are taken and analysis is performed.
Sampling and testing are labor intensive and time consuming, which delays corrective action
Real time data monitoring Extends laboratory analysis Lab is a snap shot Real time monitoring is a continuous view
Improves Quality Control Reduces testing demand on labs: labs can be used only for final
QC
Results = improved efficiency from in-line viscosity monitoring/control
