The blessing of “long life” is universally celebrated. At Palolo Chinese Home, the character for longevity (shou) has
long been used as a symbol. The artist, by adding two brush strokes, has incorporated the Chinese character for people or mankind (ren), and the result is an image of a roof embracing
long life – our wish for you. The unbroken circle signifies our mission of continuous care
and respect for our kupuna (elders). Logo designed for Palolo Chinese Home
by Clarence Lee.
Palolo Chinese Home 2016 Annual Report 2
An Eventful Year 2016 was a year of continued growth and development of Palolo Chinese Home’s (PCH) facilities and programs. It saw the construction of a new 69-bed skilled nursing facility. We are proud that our programs and activities helped us to continue our mission “to assist and care for seniors and their families by providing a contin-uum of care that is professional and interdisci-plinary, in a multicultural setting.”
Following are some of the year’s achievements:
• Palolo Chinese Home continued to be given a Five-Star Rating by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
• Our HINOA program (Hawaii Neighbor-hood Outreach to the Aged) had a 13% increase in service level, aligning with the desire of today’s seniors to receive services in their own homes. We anticipate that this trend will continue with the increasing senior population. To improve overall efficiency, HINOA assumed management of Senior Day Care (SDC) midway through 2016. Part-
time and on-call SDC staff were trained and employed to meet requests from seniors in the community by providing HINOA home services.
An Enduring Commitment to Quality • For the second year in a row, PCH was a
Providigm’s Embracing Quality Award win-ner for outstanding commitment to quality and as a top performing nursing home in the U.S. and Canada.
• PCH residents and Senior Day Care partic-ipants have always benefitted from the time and skills generously donated by volunteers. In 2016, 52 groups gave 549 volunteer hours to PCH. Special thanks to the Tzu Chi Foun-dation for visiting PCH on the third Satur-day of every month to engage residents in morning exercise, gentle touch, one-on-one sessions and staff training; and to Gladys Lee and members of the Palolo Chinese Home Women’s Auxiliary for again sponsoring a total of 12 resident activities this year.

A Solid Financial Position • PCH continues to be in a solid financial
position and received an unqualified 2015 financial audit with no management let-ter comments for the fourth consecutive year. The Home met or outpaced others in Hawaii’s skilled nursing Dun & Bradstreet sector in 2016. Our D&B rating of 1R2 im-proved from Good to Best Tier 1 ratings in delinquency risk, financial stress and supplier risk ratings.
• Our fundraising activities continued throughout the year with several signif-icant grants awarded to PCH. Among these awards was a Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) Persons-In-Need grant for $225,000 to subsidize the costs of HI-NOA services for low income seniors, and a $10,000 gift in support of the HINOA program from Friends of Hawaii Charities (proceeds from the Sony Open).
• • •
• The 26th Annual Dynasty Invitational Golf Tournament was held on Friday, May 13, 2016, at the Ala Wai Golf Course. Russell Lau was the Honorary Chair of the tourna-ment, which brought out 176 golfers and raised $45,037 for the Capital Campaign.
• Our Capital Campaign goal to raise $3 mil-lion was met with a major contribution of $1 million from the Harry Wong Foundation.
New Facility to Serve the Community • Construction of a new 69-bed skilled nursing
facility was completed in the fall. PCH held a blessing ceremony for the Harry Wong Building and began admitting residents to the new facility on November 11, 2016.
• Other campus improvements (new/addition-al parking, roadway paving and landscaping) were also completed. The PCH redevelop-ment project will culminate with the renova-tion and repurposing of Victoria Ward Hall.
As we begin 2017, we once again thank you, friends of PCH, for your generous and contin-ued support. All of us at Palolo Chinese Home know that reaching annual milestones, main-taining high standards and meeting our mission to assist and care for Hawaii’s elders and their families, are achievements made possible only with your help.
Mahalo,
