Key words: theme and rheme, types of theme, background of the study
The purpose of functional grammar is to give knowledge for the types of
grammar itself and the application. One part of functional grammar is theme and
rheme. The first element of the clause in English named theme, and the second that
accompanied is rheme.
The objectives of this research is to find out the types of theme the skripsi
background written by the students of English Education Department of Muria
Kudus University in academic year 2011/2012
The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method.
The data of this research are the types of theme which is found in the skripsi
background written by the students of English Education Department. The data are
collected through documentation from 5 undergraduate skripsi in April 2011/2012.
The data source of this research is the five skripsi background written by the students
of English Education Department of Muria Kudus University in academic year
2011/2012.
As the result of analysis the data, the writer draws some conclusion that shows
frequency of the types of theme in the skripsi background of study; They are Textual
Theme (23%), Interpersonal Theme (0%), and Topical Theme (73%). This finding
shows that topical theme is mostly used. The reason for the dominant occurrence of
the topical theme is that the use of formal written. Based on this research, the students should explore their knowledge and
understanding of theme and rheme because it is very important to know the good
writing. The lecturers should introduce and teach their students about theme and rheme.

Tujuan dari functional grammar adalah untuk memberikan pengetahuan untuk
jenis jenis grammar itu sendiri dan penerapannya. Salah satu bagian dari functional
grammar adalah theme dan rheme. Elemen pertama dari klausa dalam bahasa Inggris
disebut theme dan yang kedua yang mengikutinya disebut rheme.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis jenis Theme
dalam Latar Belakang Penulisan Skripsi oleh Mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa
Inggris , Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Muria Kudus.
Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metodepenelitian
deskriptif kualitatif. Data dari penelitian ini adalah jenis-jenis theme yang ditemukan
di latar belakang penulisan skripsi oleh mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa
inggris. Data dikumpulkan melalui dokumentasi dari 5 skripsi bahasa Inggris
S1 pada bulan April 2011/2012. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah 5 Latar
Belakang Skripsi Bahasa Inggris, Universitas MuriaKudus.
Sebagai hasil dari analisis data, penulis menarik beberapa kesimpulan yang
menunjukkan frekuensi jenis theme yang ditemukan dalam latar belakang; Mereka
adalah Textual Theme (23%), Interpersonal Theme (0%), and Topical Theme (73%).
Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa topical theme banyak digunakan. Alasan banyaknya
temuan topical theme adalah digunakan untuk penulisan resmi. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, para siswa harus mengeksplorasi pengetahuan dan
pemahaman tentang Theme dan Rheme karena sangat penting untuk mengetahui
penulisan yang baik. Para dosen harus memperkenalkan dan mengajarkan siswa mereka
tentang Theme dan Rheme.
