When is Concealed Carry Really Concealed Carry in Montana?
Montana Shooting Sports Association
Missoula, MT --(Ammoland.com)- An MSSA member asked me to
clarify where and how what sort of carry is legal in Montana, since the
Governor vetoed HB 271.
If you want to know about all the gun laws in Montana, get my book, Gun
Laws of Montana.
First, the definition of “concealed” for concealed weapons in Montana is
not a dictionary definition as in hidden from view. Rather, the definition
is specified in law as “wholly or partially covered by clothing or wearing
apparel.”
Thus, under the seat of your car (in Montana – different in other states),
in the console between the seats, in the glove box, in a backpack, in a
briefcase, and even in a woman’s purse are not considered to be
“concealed” for the purpose of Montana concealed weapon law.
Under current law you may carry openly most places, regardless of city
limits. You may carry concealed outside city limits without a permit. You
may carry concealed inside city limits without a permit in your home or
place of business (presumably with your employer’s permission).
You may also carry concealed inside city limits without a permit if you
are a person “who is lawfully engaged in hunting, fishing, trapping,
camping, hiking, backpacking, farming, ranching, or other outdoor
activity in which weapons are often carried for recreation or
protection;”, says current law.
So, if you are inside city limits, outside your home or place of business,
and not doing one of the list of outdoor things exempted in the law, and
have a firearm “wholly or partially covered by clothing or wearing
apparel,” you must have a concealed weapon permit to be legal.

Magnalight PML-70-DP-120 70 Watt HID Spotlight
Magnalight
Kemp, TX --(Ammoland.com)- Larson Electronics’ Magnalight.com
unveiled today the newest offering in its line of industrial grade
spotlights designed for rugged and abusive environments.
The Magnalight PML-70-DP-120 70 Watt HID Spotlight produces a
6,300 lumen light beam capable of reaching over 4800 feet in length and
offers the versatile option of operation with either common 120 volt AC
power or 12 volt DC current.
A weatherproof and multi-voltage capable inline transformer allows this
spotlight to operate with common 120 Volt AC power as well as its native
12VDC current, giving users the ability to mount and use this light
anywhere AC or DC power is available.
With a Xenon D2 type HID lamp and an instant on HID ballast that
brings the unit to full power in 3 seconds, the Magnalight PML-70-DP-
120 70 Watt HID Spotlight produces a 6,300 lumen light beam capable
of reaching over 4,800 feet in length. IP67 rated waterproof, this
spotlight’s housing is constructed of high impact nylon for lightweight
durability and is mounted to vehicles or flat surfaces via an adjustable
mounting assembly that incorporates tensioned hinges to provide simple
positioning of the light once mounted.
Rubber isolators provide added resistance to vibrations and a solid
polycarbonate handle affixed to the adjusting bracket allows easy beam
direction adjustment that stays in place once set. By incorporating their
IP67 rated DCP-11-DP waterproof power converter and mounting it in-
line with this spotlight’s power cord via Deutsch connectors, Magnalight
has created a high power spotlight that can be operated with common
120VAC household current as well as the 12 VDC current typical in
vehicles and boats. This dual current type capability allows users to
mount and operate this light in locations where 12VDC is either
unavailable or inconvenient as well as on vehicles and watercraft using
their own 120VAC or 12VDC power.
When operated directly from 12VDC current, this 70 watt HID spotlight
consumes a mere 5.9 amps at 70 watts, making it highly efficient as well
as powerful. With a housing constructed of high impact nylon, a
borosilicate hardened glass lens and solid polycarbonate adjusting
handle this spotlight is designed for rugged use and is an ideal lighting
solution for those in the military and professional services as well as
hunters and workers in the private sector who require a versatile
spotlight that will stand up to rugged environments.
“We have a lot of customers looking for high output fixed
mount lighting to be operated on conventional home or
building power,” said Rob Bresnahan with Larson
Electronics’ magnalight.com. “We have created a surface
mount lighting solution that can be used on 12/24V low
voltage or conventional 120/240V AC power. Think of these
as mini-tower security lights. The operator uses the handle to
move the light around to spot targets, identify security issues
and conduct other searchlight functions. “
Magnalight by Larson Electronics has provided industrial grade
spotlights and lighting equipment to the military and industrial sectors
since 1967 and manufactures and sells a wide variety of spotlights, HID
spotlights, power transformers, HID work lights and power supplies.
Visit Magnalight.com to view the entire line of Magnalight spotlights or

Frank Fiamingo, President of the New Jersey Second Amendment
Society stops in to discuss the lawsuit that the NJ2AS is bringing against
the New Jersey State Police.
The organization requested a NJ State police firearms application guide
under the Open Public Records Act and was denied, forcing the NJ2AS
to file suit in NJ Superior Court.
“For decades, individual towns and municipalities have been
ignoring state laws by adding additional disclosure
requirements to the application process set forth by
established statute”, said Fiamingo.
“This onerous process has been accelerating as more towns
add additional paperwork that puts unnecessary and illegal
administrative and financial burdens on members of the
shooting community in an overt effort to intimidate
applicants and discourage legal gun ownership in New
Jersey.”

Tips for Minimizing NuisanceBearsMAY 11, 2011 04:08P.M.
Tips for Minimizing Nuisance Bears
Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
AUGUSTA, Maine --(Ammoland.com)- This spring, the Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is strongly encouraging
homeowners to take food source and food-odor prevention steps around
their properties as ways to deter bears that could become a nuisance or
danger.
Bears have recently emerged from their dens throughout Maine and are
in search of food that is not readily available to them at this time of year.
They are drawn to bird feeders, garbage cans, dumpsters and grills –

8
where food or the odor of food is prevalent – or to areas where people
believe it’s OK to leave food for them.
“It is important to remember that food odors attract bears to
your back yard,” according to MDIF&W Wildlife Biologist
Jennifer Vashon. “For example, bird feeders are one of the
main reasons we receive bear nuisance calls, and also,
garbage that is brought to the curb the night before pickup or
is stored outside is a great temptation to a bear. We
encourage everyone, especially this time of year, to bring in
bird feeders and keep their garbage inside until the morning
of trash pickup.”
An incident two years ago in Livermore Falls involved a mother bear who
had become dependent on people for food and taught her two cubs the
bad habit of foraging for food in peoples’ backyards; they became a
nuisance to fearful neighbors. In another case, a bear became adept at
getting into dumpsters and actually slept during the day in a treetop in
the neighborhood. These could become dangerous situations and result
in the bear being destroyed.
Bears who become reliant on people for food return to the same locations
to eat.
“The worst case scenario is that a bear will hurt someone,”
according to Vashon. “It’s happened elsewhere and it could
happen here. In this unfortunate circumstance, we’d have to
destroy the bear.”
Spring is when the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
and the Maine Warden Service receives hundreds of nuisance animal
complaints, and bears near homes and in neighborhoods are among the
calls.
To minimize exposure to nuisance bears, we suggest the
following:
• Bring in your bird feeders at night and rake up the seed that has
fallen underneath the bird feeder.
• Store garbage and garbage cans in the garage or basement until
trash day, and put out the cans the mornings of pickup.
• Nothing with a strong food odor should be composted in the back
yard.
• For grills, burn off as much of the meat and grease as possible and
then brush or scrape grills clean. Grills should be stored in a closed
garage or shed.
• Use dumpsters with heavy metal lids that latch shut. Keep the lids
and self-closing doors shut. If garbage is overflowing, contact the
trash hauler to pick it up.
• If you have pets and feed them outdoors, bring their food dishes
inside at night.
• Store all livestock feeds in a secure location.
• Encourage your neighbors to take the same steps that you are to
deter bears.
• When camping, put food and other items with an odor, including
candy, toothpaste, suntan lotion and soap, in sealed containers. If
camping near your vehicle, keep the sealed containers in it. Never
store food or candy in your tent or sleeping quarters. If food or
other odorous items cannot be stored, place them in a “bear bag”
that is at least 12 feet above the ground and 10 feet from the
nearest tree trunk. After meals, store all leftovers and immediately
wash dishes. Dump the dishwater away from the camp or use a
sump hole to filter the water, and then burn the food scraps.
Carefully burn all leftover food, wrappers and grease. Don’t bury
them or throw them in a latrine.
• If a bear shows up in your backyard, stay calm. Shout at it like you
would to chase an unwanted dog. Most bears are timid enough to
be scared away by yelling, waving or banging pots. Check first
before going outside. Black bears blend into night skies, thus
providing the chance of an encounter. Use outside lights to full
advantage and look outside from a safe position, such as a porch or
window.
• Never approach a bear.

America’s national forests and why giving back to this resource is so
important.
Attendees also were treated to a shotgun shooting demonstration by

Plains, N.Y., course features 20 stations located along a two-mile path
that winds through hardwood forests and wetland areas.
The winning team for the event was Ten Mile River Preserve with second
place going to Vertrue, LLC., and Verizon Business claiming third. The
event’s top gun was Al Gaynor while Stephanie Steinkraus was runner
up. Chris Sutter won the Betteridge Rolex Challenge by running a
challenging 10-clay station.
Through sponsorships, donations, live and silent auctions, the event
generated more than $300,000 in support of the NFF’s mission to
engage communities in conserving and improving National Forests and
Grasslands.
“Over the course of two days, we experienced an amazing
level of camaraderie and generosity on behalf of our country’s
great public lands,” said NFF President Bill Possiel. “Thanks
to our partner, the Remington Outdoor Foundation, as well
as dozens of other sponsors and donors, the Sporting Clays
Invitational continues to provide a fun yet meaningful way
for people to learn more about our National Forests and help
perpetuate them for future generations.”

Wisconsin Constitutional Carry & Concealed Carry Updates
Constitutional Carry Moving Forward Across USA
Wisconsin Carry
Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- I apologize for this hastily drafted
update, but its a very busy week.
Word out of Madison yesterday was that neither Fitzgerald brother (One
is speaker of the house, one speaker of the assembly) was going to allow
the constitutional carry legislation to a vote.
TODAY I’ve been told the Capitol is abuzz about constitutional carry as a
result of calls and emails from gun-owning constituents who want
constitutional carry to have a fair shot.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO MADISON TOMORROW, The Madison hearing
is ONLY hearing the “shall-issue” permit bill. WHEN YOU SIGN IN at
the hearing you have to sign in “in favor” of the bill or “against”.
Wisconsin Carry along with our friends over at the massive Wisconsin
Tea Party Coalition are asking our members to all WRITE IN a 3rd
option and sign in, “in support of CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY.”
This way they cannot tabulate people attending for constitutional carry
in support of “shall-issue” nor could they tabulate people attending for
constitutional carry as against concealed carry.
Wisconsin Carry, in a joint effort with the United States Concealed Carry
Association is also preparing a set of radio ads to pressure the Fitzgerald
brothers into standing up for smaller government and lower taxes and
allowing constitutional carry a fair debate/vote in their respective
legislative bodies. We have funds set aside to begin this radio ad
campaign in Milwaukee.
If you have monies you would like to donate to run these ads statewide
(Madison, Fox Valley, Lacrosse, Wausau) you may donate on our
website homepage www.wisconsincarry.org
It appears we REALLY need to put pressure on Scott and Jeff Fitzgerald
to do the right thing and support the law-abiding citizens of Wisconsin
who wish to carry concealed and not have to pay permit taxes, register
with the government, nor take the government mandated training class.
We are asking you to make 4 PHONE CALLS today. One to Senator Scott
Fitzgerald, Speaker of the Senate, One to Jeff Fitzgerald, Speaker of the
Assembly, and one each to your state senator and assembly person. If
your assembly person HAS signed on as a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 93,
thank them. if they have not, ask them TO sign on.
Constitutional Carry Senate Bill 93 viewable here:
You can read at the top of the bill which senators are co-introducing it
and which representatives are co-sponsoring.

many gun-rights organizations in Wisconsin, is investing a great deal of

next legislative session by proposing Constitutional Carry. Wisconsin

BELLEVUE, WA – -(Ammoland.com)- The Citizens Committee for the
Right to Keep and Bear Arms today announced that even though its
rolling billboard bearing the message “Guns Save Lives” has been
prohibited from driving through New York City’s Times Square, people
will still get to see it, on the famed Times Square electronic billboard.
CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb announced that the message will be
flashed on Wednesday, calling attention to the fact that firearms in the
hands of law-abiding private citizens save lives. CCRKBA has sponsored
a rolling billboard truck in several cities this spring, in reaction to a
nationwide anti-gun campaign launched by New York Mayor Michael
Bloomberg and Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The CCRKBA campaign
most recently was in Pittsburgh.
“We believe that the American public, and New Yorkers in
particular, deserve to understand that on the average, guns
save 2,191 lives and are used to thwart crimes every day,”
Gottlieb said. “Michael Bloomberg would have people believe
only that guns are bad, even while he enjoys the benefits of
armed bodyguards wherever he goes. Average citizens do not
have that billionaire lifestyle luxury.
“Instead,” he continued, “average citizens outside of anti-gun
gulags like New York and Chicago have learned to take care of
themselves. One way they do that is by exercising their right
to keep and bear arms, a concept that Bloomberg has tried to
impair since he took office.”
The “Guns Save Lives” message has also appeared in Los Angeles,
Phoenix, Chicago, Milwaukee, Washington, D.C. and Miami. At every
stop, including one outside of the Los Angeles Times building, and
outside of the Miami Herald building, the message has been well
received. Local volunteers have helped stage events in several cities.
“Our message will not be silenced,” Gottlieb said, “and on
Wednesday, with people from all over the map watching at
Times Square, we will have an impact. Michael Bloomberg
has been trying to spread hysteria about gun rights. We’re
going to spread the truth.”
With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the
Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
(www.ccrkba.org) is one of the nation’s premier gun rights organizations.
As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to
preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials
and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local
communities throughout the United States.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- Walker Tavern Historic Site’s 5th annual
Civil War Reenactment will take place May 14 and 15.
The event commemorates the opening days of the American Civil War.
More than 300 military and civilian re-enactors will recreate the Battle
of Philippi, the first organized land action of the war.
The roar of cannons, the smell of black powder, and the cries of battle
will contrast sharply with the daily routine of 1860s village life where
shopkeepers hawk their wares, children play games and housewives
prepare meals.
The hours for this special weekend event are Saturday, May 14, from at
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Civil War Weekend is a collaborative effort between re-enactors
from the 5th Texas Co. E, the USS Michigan Marine Guard and Historic
Walker Tavern.
Michael Ovsenik of the 5th Texas Co. E , coordinator of this
year’s event, noted, “We chose the Battle of Philippi because
it occurred just weeks after the hostilities at Fort Sumter
began the Civil War. Since the Confederate Army was not
organized this early in the war, it gives us a chance to recreate
the recruitment of civilians and the presentation of shirts and
flags by the townsfolk to the new soldiers.”
Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch or to purchase food from
onsite venders. The Wonder Wagon features hot dogs and sausages.
Walter’s Kettlecorn offers old-fashioned popped corn. Soul Stops Here is
the place for barbequed ribs, chicken and beef brisket. Walker Tavern’s
trademark root beer will also be for sale.
Walker Tavern is located at the intersection of US 12 and M-50 in the
Irish Hills. A former stagecoach stop on the main route between Detroit
and Chicago, Walker Tavern is now part of the Michigan Historical
Museum Family. It is administered by the Michigan Historical Center
and the Parks and Recreation Division of the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources.
Walker Tavern Historic Site will open for the season Saturday, May 28.

Wisconsin Constitutional CarryAct Hearings to be HeldTomorrow in Wausau &MadisonMAY 11, 2011 02:33P.M.
Hearings on 2011 Wisconsin Constitutional Carry to be Held
Tomorrow in Wausau and Madison
National Rifle Association
FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- The good citizens of Wisconsin
have been denied their right to self-defense for too long and the time has
now come to make the Personal Protection Act a reality!
It is time that Wisconsin joins Free America and the 48 other states with
concealed carry laws.
The bills have been circulated for sponsorship and have now been
assigned numbers.
Two bills introduced in the 2011 legislative session allow Wisconsinites
to carry concealed weapons for personal protection. Senate Bill 93,
known as “permitless carry” would simply eliminate the current
prohibition against law-abiding citizens carrying concealed firearms.
Many citizens already carry openly and this will allow them to conceal
their firearms. It also eliminates the “cased and unloaded” requirement
for handguns in motor vehicles. State Senator Pam Galloway (R-
Wausau) has introduced SB 93 and there is currently no companion bill
in the Assembly. This fact does not preclude the bill from being passed
by the Senate and then the Assembly to ultimately become law.
The second is Assembly Bill 126/Senate Bill 90, a “shall issue” carry

license bill that allows Wisconsinites to obtain a license from the state
Department of Justice in order to carry a concealed weapon. This license
bill offers some additional benefits. These include the ability to use the
license to carry a concealed weapon in many other states while traveling
and the ability to carry concealed weapons in school zones (1000-foot
area surrounding school grounds) within the state.
These zones are prolific and it is virtually impossible to navigate
populated areas without entering them while engaging in routine
activities. The federal penalty for a school zone violation is up to five
years in prison and a fine. State Representative Jeffrey Mursau (R-
Crivitz) and state Senator Pam Galloway (R-Wausau) are the sponsors of
this legislation, respectively.
Please contact your state legislators to ask that they support these bills
and request that they oppose any amendments that restrict your ability
to defend yourself or place unnecessary hurdles in the process required
to obtain a concealed weapons license. Too many legislators are acting as
if there are not 48 other states with such concealed carry laws and that
there is no way of determining what works and what does not. The time
for guessing has ended!
We have provided two documents that will further inform you about this
fight for your rights. One is a summary of the bills, with details regarding
the “shall issue” carry license bill, and the other is a comprehensive
Questions and Answers document. The summary focuses on the “shall
issue” carry bill because it is more complicated than the “permitless
carry” bill.
It should be noted that SB 93, the “permitless carry” bill, is being
considered only at the Senate’s Wausau hearing and not in the
Assembly’s Madison hearing. If you wish to testify on and support SB 93,
you should plan to attend the hearing in Wausau. As a matter of
legislative policy, committees do not accept testimony on bills that are
not on the committee agenda. Therefore, it is safe to assume that
testimony will be allowed only on AB 126 in the Assembly hearing.
In addition to contacting legislators, it is very important that we have a
strong showing of support at the committee hearings TOMORROW in
Madison and Wausau. You can rest assured that the anti-freedom forces
will be there and they must be countered. The hearings set for tomorrow
are as follows:
Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Corrections
Thursday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m.
State Capitol Building
Room 417 North
Madison, WI
(only the “shall issue” carry license bill will be heard)
Senate Committee on Judiciary
Thursday, May 12 at 12:30 p.m.
UW Marathon County
Center for Civic Engagement
625 Stewart Street Wausau, WI
(both bills will be heard)
To contact your legislators, you can call the Legislative Hotline at 800-
362-9472 or you can click here and find individual contact information
for your state Senator and state Representative. PLEASE ACT SOON!
YOUR FREEDOM DEPENDS ON IT!

Missouri Spring Turkey HarvestDown 9.3 PercentMAY 11, 2011 02:21P.M.
Missouri’s 2011 Spring Turkey Harvest Down 9.3 Percent
Wet, windy weather plagued hunters throughout much of the season.
By Jim Low
Missouri Department of Conservation
JEFFERSON CITY MO --(Ammoland.com)- A 9.3-percent dip in the
2011 spring turkey harvest confirms what Missourians already knew – it
has been a stormy three weeks in the Show-Me State.
Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle, the Conservation Department’s turkey
specialist, announced today that hunters checked 38,328 turkeys during
the regular spring turkey season April 18 through May 8. That is down
3,926 from last year.
Adding the harvest from the youth turkey season April 9 and 10 brings
Missouri’s 2011 spring turkey harvest to 42,226. That is down 8.6
percent from last year. Spring turkey permit sales were down 4,885, or
3.3 percent, from last year.
Top harvest counties were Franklin, with 840 turkeys checked, Texas

with 699 and Bollinger with 675. Juvenile gobblers, known as “jakes,”
made up 19.6 percent of the harvest. That is virtually identical to last
year, when jakes comprised 20 percent of the harvest. Isabelle predicted
a smaller harvest this year because of a decline in turkey numbers
statewide.
“We still have very strong wild turkey numbers in most areas
compared to other states,” said Isabelle, “but there is no
question that the population is down, and more in some areas
than others. That was bound to affect our harvest this year.
Cool, rainy and often windy conditions during much of turkey
season magnified the effect.”
Isabelle said the season got off to a good start. The youth harvest was
virtually identical to last year’s, and the opening-day harvest was slightly
higher than in 2010. Then it turned cool and turned stormy.
Isabelle said rain, cool temperatures and wind have a double negative
effect on hunting success. Stormy weather causes male turkeys to gobble
less, making them harder to hunt. Nasty weather also discourages
hunters from going afield.
“The turkeys are out there every day,” said Isabelle. “You can
hunt them effectively, even on rainy days, but it’s harder, and
it can be uncomfortable. Quite a few hunters choose not to
hunt at all on rainy days. I suspect that when we look at our
hunter survey data, we’ll see a reduction in the number of
days that hunters took to the field this spring.”
Isabelle said he doesn’t expect this spring’s relatively light harvest to
have a significant effect on the state’s turkey population. This is partly
because 99 percent of the harvested turkeys are males, and turkey
reproduction is determined by the number of hens. MDC sets the
hunting season late enough in the spring to allow ample opportunity for
gobblers and hens to breed prior to the start of the season.
“Harvesting 4,000 fewer gobblers in the spring is a minor
factor compared to annual reproduction,” said Isabelle. “In a
good year, our hens can produce more than 300,000 poults
(young turkeys). That dwarfs the total number of gobblers we
harvest, even when hunting conditions are good.”
Isabelle said Missouri has enough wild-turkey hens to stage a population
recovery. To do that, however, the birds need favorable weather. Wet
conditions take a toll on nesting success of ground-nesting birds like
turkeys. It also reduces survival of poults, which are susceptible to
hypothermia when cool, wet weather prevails.
Isabelle said wet conditions so far this spring have not helped turkey
nesting, but most areas haven’t been as hard-hit as southeastern
Missouri.
“Even in areas where flooding has occurred, hens still have
time to re-nest and bring off a good crop of poults,” he said.
“We have had several years of bad nesting conditions, but I’m
hoping this will be the year when we get warmer, drier
weather, and turkey numbers bounce back a bit. May and
June are critical months for wild turkey production, and it’s
still not too late for conditions to improve.”
The Conservation Department recorded three firearms-
related hunting incidents during the regular turkey season.
None was fatal. Two incidents, including a fatal self-inflicted
gunshot, occurred during the youth season. Last year, the
agency recorded four incidents during the regular season and
two during the youth season.
None of last year’s incidents was fatal. County-by-county
spring turkey harvest totals are available at the MDC website,
www.missouriconservation.org. Search for “2011 turkey
harvest.”

of Directors with a lifetime appointment to the Executive Council, she is
a past president and a current trustee of The NRA Foundation. Sandy
was also recently elected chairwoman of the
Joe Foss Institute, which is dedicated to promoting and teaching
patriotism, public service, integrity and an appreciation for America’s
freedoms to our nation’s youth. Sandy is a highly respected attorney with
a private civil law practice in Tucson, Arizona.
Sandy Froman, Past President of the NRA
Froman didn’t shoot her first gun until she was in her early 30′s.
However, she favored knives from an early age and used her
grandfather’s pocketknife to whittle balsa wood kite frames into bows
and arrows for hunting tomatoes in her mother’s garden. Her love for
knives was discouraged by her mother, but encouraged 25 years later by
her late husband Bruce Nelson, who was a member of the American
Bladesmith Society and studied knifemaking with Bo Randall and Dan
Dennehy.
Sandy owns a number of highly collectible knives and appreciates them
as both tools she uses daily and when she hunts, and as fine examples of
American craftsmanship. She believes that rights that are not exercised
cease to exist, and so carries her knives as well as her guns, wherever the
law allows. Sandy was Knife Rights’ first Cornerstone Charter Member
and has supported the organization since before it was officially
launched in 2006.
Sandy is a passionate, high energy and dynamic speaker who has
traveled world-wide speaking in defense of our rights. Those attending
Knife Rights’ Sharper Future Awards Breakfast are in for a treat. Don’t

Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Spring Shooting Championship
Scholastic Steel Challenge
EAST GRANBY, Conn. --(Ammoland.com)- The motto of the U.S.
Coast Guard is ‘Semper Paratus’ which means ‘Always Ready’ and that’s
exactly what the cadets of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy were when they
took on, and beat, the University of Vermont, Harvard University, Yale
University and a squad from Wayland High School to claim the first
Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Spring Championship.
The cadets outpaced second place UVM by 79.52 seconds with a final
winning time of 363.15 seconds. Cadet Barton Nanney led the team,
finishing first overall with a time of 79.46 seconds and a stage win on
both Speed Option and Roundabout. Finishing second overall was Cadet
Alex Webber with 89.67seconds followed by Cadet Jake Naum, fourth
place overall, with 96.22 seconds. Cadet Jon Sapundjieff, who took top
honors on Five to Go finished fifth overall with 97.80 seconds.
“The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Combat Arms Team put in
an outstanding performance at the Collegiate Spring
Championship. As SSC expands at the collegiate level, the
cadets are likely to remain at, or near, the top of each match if
this weekend’s shooting is any indication,” said Scott Moore,
director of the Scholastic Steel Challenge.
The University of Vermont’s Shooting Sports Club finished second with a
combined team time of 442.67 seconds, led by Jeffrey Hammersmith
who finished seventh overall with 99.27 seconds. Chris Stecyk placed
eighth overall with 99.40 seconds while William Cain and Takeshi
Horiguchi finished 10th and 11th overall with times of 116.44 and 127.56
seconds respectively.
The only non-collegiate team competing in the match finished third.
Made up of students from Massachusetts’ Wayland High School, the
squad posted a final time of 458.88, just 16.21 seconds behind Vermont.
Jesse Goddard, who finished third overall in the match with a time of
91.75 seconds, led the Wayland shooters. Helping propel Wayland into
third was John Monahan who took top honors on Smoke & Hope, the
only stage the Coast Guard Academy cadets did not win, and finished
sixth overall with 98.37 seconds. Will Gunshenan and Derek Kaufman
rounded out the Wayland effort with 130.35 and 138.41 seconds each.
Harvard’s team, which included shooters who had little or no experience
with pistol shooting, finished fourth with a team time of 690.51 seconds.
Alvin Siu led the Harvard squad with a final time of 136.78 seconds
followed by Kip Christianson with 157.39 seconds, William Marks with
180.53 seconds and Lila Nieves-Lee with 215.81 seconds.
The Yale squad, which also featured shooters with limited pistol
experience but, like Harvard, unlimited enthusiasm, took fifth with a
team time of 717.23 seconds. Brian Lee led the Yale effort by finishing
ninth overall with a time of 108.38 seconds. Lee was followed by Edward
Paulino with 165.37 seconds, Justin Hart with 211.83 seconds and Dan
Bersak with a match time of 231.65 seconds.
Held at the Hartford Gun Club and hosted by firearms make Smith &
Wesson, the Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Spring Championship
marks the program’s expansion to the collegiate level.
The next major collegiate event on the SSC schedule will be the
Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Fall Championship which will be
hosted by Sig Sauer and take place at the Sig Sauer Academy located in
Epping, N.H.
The Scholastic Steel Challenge is a national team-oriented youth
shooting program developed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association
and funded in part by a grant from the National Shooting Sports
Foundation. The program is open to young men and women ages 12 to
20 and offers them the opportunity to compete as a four person team for
a national title in the action pistol discipline of speed shooting.
From the beginning, industry support for the Scholastic Steel Challenge
has been strong with the program picking up sponsorship from Action
Target, Atlanta Arms & Ammo, Brownells, Glock, GT Target Stands,
MGM Targets, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Outdoor
Wire Digital Network, Precision Delta, Safariland, Smith & Wesson,
Winchester Ammunition and the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance.
