Dear Parents / Carers,
There has be since the previous newsletter, we have had
the 2018 budget handed down, with our interest turning to
what’s in it for Education. There hasn’t been too many
surprises as much of schools funding already set in the last
Budget with the Quality Schools reform package
recommended in the 2011 Gonski report into school
funding.

AMIENS STATE SCHOOL “Mens Sana in Copore Sano”
Term 2 – Week 6 Tuesday 22nd May, 2018
The main item was the announcement that the National
Schools Chaplaincy program will become permanent, which
will have a new anti-bullying focus.
Last week was very busy! With NAPLAN successfully
completed, we have welcomed and
farewelled the Rotary Bike-Riders
Glen Innis to the Gold Coast (G2G).
Not only did the P&C provide
breakfast for Years 3 and 5
students (before NAPLAN)
last Wednesday, but they
then turned around and
presented a delicious
morning tea for 25 G2G bikers.

This week we continued where we left off last week. On Tuesday, our cross country
runners, selected from their results at the Granite Belt Cross Country at Severnlea, went
off to Toowoomba to compete. Congratulations to India Poole, Jade Poole and Jaxon
Wilkins on their selection. From all verbal reports to date, they did our school proud,
improving on last year’s effort.
On Thursday we have a very busy day. As I won’t be here, having a Regional Principal
Meeting in Toowoomba on that day, it will be Mrs Sutton who will have to participate in the
annual Biggest Morning Tea. Students are invited to bring a plate to share for morning tea
and a gold coin to donate to Cancer Research. After morning tea, the bus will take students
to the Stanthorpe State High School Bookfair. This is a day eagerly awaited and enjoyed!
Soccer this week will be against Greenlands in both grades. The Zone team will play away
at Greenlands and the A-League team at home.
We will therefore need transport for the Zone team – leaving school at around
12:45pm on Friday.
Last week saw the Zone team narrowly going down to Ballandean at home by 3 – 2 with A-
League having a well-earned bye. From Parenting Ideas At parentingideass.com.au/schools, insights into anxiety in primary school children. Anxiety affects people from all walks of life, and lots of kids have it. If that’s what’s happening in your family, your little one is lucky that you know, care, and are seeking answers. The idea that one of our kids might be experiencing anxiety sets off all sorts of alarm bells in us as parents. It’s fair to say it makes us anxious ourselves, and has us asking all sorts of questions like “What does it mean?”, “What’s ‘normal’?” and “What can I do to help?”. Mindfulness is a superpower for the anxious brain (any brain in fact!) and there are lots of great ways to help kids practice mindfulness. One fun game is lying on the floor, eyes closed and asking them to tune into their ‘Spidey Senses’, listening carefully for any sounds near or far, feeling any sensations under their hands and body and smelling for any scents in the air. Mindfulness reduces the size of the amygdala among other incredible changes in the brain

From the Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Classroom
We will again be participating in the Queensland Country Women’s Association International Competition for 2018, on Germany. This competition for primary school children has the requirements:
Year 3 – Poster A3 size on Flora and Fauna of Germany. Year 4 – Poster A3 size on Tourism of Germany. Years 5 and 6 – Computer-generated booklet on aspects of Germany. The entries are due on 15th June following week on Wednesday (20th June) we will be travelling to Broadwater for an afternoon of German culture.
In English, for the remainder of the term by popular demand, students are studying reading, writing and performing poetry. The poems for the Eisteddfod are a great lead-in to this learning. Students are learning the literary devices of similes and metaphors to use in their work. This week students are learning onomatopoeia – you know, where the word says the sound. They have already written some great work – for example this one by Jaxon.
