Imperialism in China, and Japan

Information on

Panama Canal

The U.S. became closer to China

and Japan because of Matthew

Perry, the foreign country roles,

and the Boxer Rebellion during the

United States imperialism in china

and Japan. There was also some

pros and cons that came with

imperialism. Some pros are being

able to access cheap labor and

raw materials, some places would

have a sense of pride and

superiority. Some cons is that

imperialism was often imbued with

racism and condescension, which

people are able to argue about.

Commodore Matthew Perry was

sent by President Millard Filmore

in 1853 with a fleet of four ships

into Edo (Tokyo) Bay. Matthew

Perry had made a treaties with

Japan. The four treaties were

peace and friendship between the

United States and Japan, opening

two ports to American ships at

Shimoda and Hakodate, help for

any American ships wrecked on

the Japanese coast and protection

for shipwrecked people, and

permission for American ships to

buy supplies, coal, water, and

other necessary provision in

Japanese port.

Pros & Cons Some pros are being able to access

cheap labor and raw materials.

Some would have a sense of pride

and superiority, also the countries

would become stronger. Some cons

were that more people would come

to the U.S. and would make more

competition with jobs and lower

salary wages.

Foreign countries had really big

roles when it came to China. The

British had forced China to open

five ports to British trade. The

United States actually received

trading privileges. China’s rulers

also struggled to keep foreign

interests from overrunning the

country. Also, John Hay had a

role in the foreign affairs. In

1899, John Hay had written the

Open Door Policy. It wasn’t until

March 1900, after John had sent

notes recommending the Open

Door Policy to Great Britain,

Germany, Russia, Japan,

France, and Italy, that the policy

was approved. In June 1900, the Boxer Rebellion was born. Boxers

laid siege to the capital city of Beijing. Western nations

had rushed 20,000 troops, including 2,000 Americans,

to China. After a year in September 1901, China had

signed a humbling agreement. Today, the U.S. is closer

to Japan and China because of Matthew Perry, the role

of foreign countries, and the Boxer Rebellion.

The United States shouldn’t have done this because it is not right how

Hawaii had there on things going on own culture and beliefs. We the

United States talk about how we believe in freedom and the right to live

at peace but yet we come into Hawaii and take over and pretty much

bully them for Hawaii. We need to think about how they feel and there

perspective. The people of Hawaii should be of concern and they should

not always think of themselves. They mostly have done this because

they were I guess you can say scare but regardless they should have

waited to react and see what was

going to happen. The

United States didn’t want

the Hawaiian monarchy to

rebuild and once they started

to rebuild they took over. In

my eyes and thoughts that it

sets a bad example. This is

why the United Sates are

called bullies but I say

scared bullies because they

take over anything that

think that will cause them a

threat.

Hawaiian Annexation Drew Contreras

There for they should not be shunned for asking for it back because they

have every right not to only ask for Hawaii back but have Hawaii back. It

would have been a different story if they had asked and made compromises

but they didn’t and that’s where they were wrong about the way they went

about the situation.

When the Americans came and took over and it was not very

willing. They forcefully came in and demanded Hawaii. They

were never willing to go

They Annexed Hawaii at first they would not except it so they had to force

it. In 1959 Hawaii became American territory.

The Queen no longer had

authority or any type of power,

they had come and took all power

and any type of authority. The

Americans had taken over with

no vote, I think that’s why the

17th amendment was created for

everyone to have a decision and a

right to vote for what they want.

And I think if they want to keep

it one they should have the state

vote and have the chance to win it

back even though that shouldn’t

be necessary but it has come

down to that.

It is a place they wanted to make a

part of U.S. so they should have

treated as one and voted whether

they wanted the queen and it to stay

what it is or now to change it back

or to take the offers of the United

States. Because no matter what the

U.S. offers them now does not

mean that it’s right to just snatch it

from them. They should have had a

vote or have asked at least if they

wanted to make it apart of the

United States they should have

treated as a part of it. That is an act

of a hypocrite. In 1993 congress apologized for U.S. role

in over throwing Queen Liliuokalimi.

The Spanish American War

BY: Cyle Cox Have you ever wondered why some wars take

place? The Spanish American war released a

lot of issues including, the USS Maine

explosion, the War in Philippines, and the War

in Cuba. And some people didn’t know why

and still don’t know why this war happened.

The USS Maine explosion was very

questionably answered. The de Lome letter

was a piece that explained the opinion of the

involvement of Spain in Cuba that expanded

the war intensity between Americans and

Spanish because it said that McKinley the

president that was elected in 1896 that tried to

prevent the war involving Spain is “weak and

catering.” The Maine had been sent to

Havana, Cuba to protect American lives and

their poverty.

The war in the Philippines was a big part in

the Spanish American War. Roosevelt sent

George Dewey the commander of the United

States Navy to Spain on secret orders.

Dewey’s orders were to attack the Spanish

fleet on the Philippines. The Americans had

the advantage of modern ships with iron and

steel hulls and also superior weaponry.

Dewey and his army started their journey on

May 1, 1898. Two hours later Captain Gridley

reported that the Olympia was low on

ammunition. Later Dewey decided to retreat

to renew supplies but later found out that they

had plenty of supplies, so they continued to

fight at battle, soon after noon Spanish fleet

was ablaze and sinking. The Americans still

won the battle.

The Spanish American War The war was fought in many different places. It took place right above the border line of the southern hemisphere. Cuba was one of those places. American congress adopted the Teller Amendment. The Teller Amendment stated once Cuba freed itself from Spanish rule the Island to it’s people. Victory was definitely going to be a hard task to achieve because the United States wasn’t as prepared as they should have been. Most of the soldiers that fought in Cuba were enlisted men also known as regulars. Another type of soldier were the most famous volunteer and they were known as the rough riders which was organized by president Theodore Roosevelt. Finally their were a plenty amount of problems in the Spanish American War because their were unfair projects that were done and caused to produce many issues between the two countries.

MEXICAN

REVOLUTION

MEXICAN REVOLUTION ( ARTICLE BY BRYAN SPROSTON)

The Mexican Revolution officially began in

1910 after Francisco Madero overthrew

Porfirio Diaz, who was had been the

Mexican president since 1876. Diaz

brought Mexico to be a fairly normal

society. But he also jailed our killed anyone

that stepped in his way, he was also

greedy he took money investors had gave

him and put it to his personal needs

therefore many Mexicans lived in poverty,

making citizens revolt. Diaz did whatever

he could to stop Madero from coming to

office. When Madero was finally brought to

office in 1911, he tried to establish a

democratic government. Madero was

quickly overwhelmed by Diaz supporters,

and was overthrown in 1913 by Victoriano

Huerta. But U.S president Woodrow Wilson

didn’t see Huerta as president he saw

Venustiano Carranza as president. A man

named Pancho Villa was furious when he

heard this and he got a gang of his

supporters to murder group of American

mining engineers. Wilson was furious by

this and sent General John J. Pershing into

Mexico and chased villa for almost a year

but couldn't catch him. To solve all the

trouble a new constitution was established

for Mexico. Should the U.S. gotten

involved?

1

In my opinion the United States

should have gotten involved in the

Mexican Revolution. The reason I

think we should have gotten is

because our nation was threatened

and attacked . Another reason I

believe we should of gotten involved

in the Mexican Revolution is because

our country needs to establish a save

surrounding . Also innocent

American’s were murdered because

of one mans opinion. Finally we need

to show other country's that we don’t

mess around when it comes to the

safety of our people if we are threated

we need to react in the best interest

of our country. In Conclution I think

that the United States should have

gotten involved in the Mexican

revolution because we were

threatened and it was in the best

interest of our country to help a

neighboring country out.

The Panama Canal is very

important to America for many reasons,

shortcut through the canal, giving

American political ability to persuade

panama, and shows America’s

perseverance to get the job done. The

Panama Canal was meant to be a 50

mile wide canal. The French started

and couldn’t finish because they went

bankrupt. America bought the rights to

the canal and the equipment to the

canal from the French. With the

Technology they have now being in the

19th Century they can accomplish,

unlike in the previous Century where

they could only dream of building it.

When America Built it they could get a

ship from Atlantic Ocean to Pacific

Ocean without going around south

America.

With America’s being in Panama, Roosevelt supported

Panama wanting independence from Columbia. The very next

day Roosevelt said he supported them, Panama declared

independence from Columbia. Having Panama Independent,

America quickly recognized the Republic of Panama. Doing that

Panama gave America total unending sovereignty over a 10 mile

wide canal zone.

America had many issues

with the Canal though. Diseases from

mosquito's from nearby marshes

cause malaria and yellow fever. Dr.

William C. Gorgas was sent down to

investigate this problem. His solution

was to use mosquito oil to fumigate

the still water places where

mosquito's inbred. After fumigating the

whole isthmus, it rounded to the cost

a total of 1 million dollars. Having a

alliance with The Republic of Panama,

we can have a passage way through

Central America that let’s America get

ships from the Pacific to the Atlantic,

and using our perseverance to

sanitize Panama.
