The University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association has had a changing of the guard with a new executive board now taking the reins. Meet the new crew and learn about what’s in store for the future.

It’s been a while and a great many things have changed since their last visit but eight members of the Class of 1962 seemed to enjoy the experience. Members of the Faculty’s first graduating class were special guests at the Alumni of Distinction weekend and even managed to sneak in a reunion while in town for the event.

Its the classic tale of the fellow from the small town who heads to the big city to make good. Xiaom-ing Xiang, a resident in graduate periodontics was nominated for the prestigious Balint Orban Memo-rial Prize, awarded by the American Academy of Periodontology. See how the resident earned such attention for the little Faculty up north.

The Balint Orban Memorial programme provides a forum for presentation of clinical and basic science research by periodontal residents and students by the American Academy of Periodontology. Named in honor of

Dr. Balint Orban, a member of the Academy who was influential in developing the scientific foundations of contemporary periodontics, the competition is open to students enrolled in accredited periodontal programmes in the United States and Canada, or those who graduated less than 18 months previously.

Eight finalists, selected on the basis of written abstracts, are invited to deliver oral presentations at each AAP annual meeting. Their presentation is heard and questioned by a panel of academics.

You could say it was a grand way to start the summer. The University of Manitoba School of Dental Hygiene Alumni Association had 5,000 reasons to be cheerful this summer thanks to a tremendously

successful fund-raising drive that reached its target on Canada Day.The newly-created alumni body met the challenge of raising $2,000 in

order to qualify for an operating grant of $5,000 courtesy of Dean Anthony Iacopino and the Faculty of Dentistry. The Dean made good on the pledge shortly thereafter presenting UMSDHAA president Cindy Isaak-Ploegman (pictured centre) with the cheque. School of Dental Hygiene Director Dr. Joanna Asadoorian also turned up to offer congratulations to all.

The UMSDHAA is now fully up and running and has even scheduled their first event — a Continuing Dental Education session for this spring. The group is also welcoming new members as well. For more on the new association and its plans for the future, see page 20.

Getting noticed when you are among the smallest in the group is not always the easiest thing. And it was with this in mind that

Xiaoming Xiang was particularly pleased to learn that his research had been cited as a contender for a most significant award this past summer.

The first-year resident of the Faculty’s Graduate Periodontics programme was nominated for the prestigious Balint Orban Memorial Prize, awarded by the American Academy of Periodontology. With the nomination came the opportunity to present his work at the AAP annual meeting held a short time ago in Los Angeles, California.

“It was a great experience,” he said from the perio resident office one October afternoon. “I was invited to present my research, which was based on our diabetic study, entitled: ‘Decreased tissue oxygenation, increased risk of periodontal disease?’ In this study, we found uncontrolled decreased tissue oxidation, which in turn becomes a significant risk factor for periodontal disease.”

Dr. Xiang’s abstract was one of eight selected as a finalist for the prize out of a field of roughly 150 submissions.

In addition to submitting a poster, each finalist delivers and defends a brief oral presentation before an academic review panel. And despite the size and scope of the competition, Dr. Xiang said he thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

“I consider this to be a learning experience,” he said.”There is nothing that you should be afraid of. We are all adventurers. We are all colleagues. I think the main purpose of this is that we all share information. We learn from each other. That’s why I don’t feel nervous or anything like that.”

There could be another reason for Dr. Xiang’s confidence. Much of the research performed for the study was gathered through the use of optical spectroscopy. This new technology has shown great potential to be a simple, reagent-free, chair-side, site-specific diagnostic test for periodontitis. Dr. Xiang was among those participating in the development of what has been labeled a major breakthrough in oral health.

“I think this is a ground-breaking project,” Dr. Xiang said. “The big advantage of this technology is that we can follow the patient and repeat

the measurement as many times as we want since there is no radiation. It is completely noninvasive. There is no pain or discomfort for the patient.”

Dr. Xiang said he has done much research and has delivered a number of presentations related to this project. His success, he says, reflects well upon the entire institution.

“I think this is one of these things that puts the University of Manitoba name on the map,” he said. “Our graduate programme is relatively small compared with a lot of the others in the US and Canada. I talked to some of the other residents of the states and some of their schools receive five, even six residents each year. If you compare the size, they are much bigger than our programme. But our programme is pretty strong. It may not be the biggest one, but it could be one of the strongest.”

October 13, 2012 — a cloudy, colder-than-normal fall day in Winnipeg. But inside a small, downtown rehearsal room at Prairie Theatre Exchange, more than 20 Manitoba dentists are gathered, warmed by their hopes, their dreams and their expectations.

They are here to audition for roles in the classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, the second all-dentist musical production produced and performed by Manitoba dentists.

There’s a buzz in the room; excited chatter and an electric air as the dentists greet each other, recognizing the familiar faces of colleagues. They are all drawn by the same thing: a love of musical theatre and performing.

In May 2011, the Manitoba Dental Association’s first-ever, all-dentist musical production, Little Shop of Horrors, debuted at Prairie Theatre Exchange to excellent reviews from audiences and local theatre critics alike.

Even as that show ended, there was already talk of ‘the next one.’

“I’m really excited! There’s clearly a buzz,” says Dr. Tricia Magsino-Barnabé, who spearheaded the first musical project and is leading the second production. “Since the ending of the last show, I was constantly asked when the next show would be coming on. So there’s a lot of interest in this one.”

The first musical production, Little Shop of Horrors, was not only a critical success but a financial success as well, raising approximately $30,000 for Prairie Theatre Exchange.

This time the dentists are raising the bar both artistically and on the fund-raising side. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Prairie Theatre Exchange in support of the arts, and also to aid cancer patients.

“This time we decided to aid head and neck cancer patients,” says Dr. Magsino-Barnabé.

“Patients may undergo either radiation or surgery, both of which may result in financial

burden because of their needs for complex restorative dental treatment and/or oral prostheses.”

The idea to fundraise for head and neck cancer patients was inspired by the late Dr. Harvey Spiegel (University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry, Class of 1968), who played the role of Mr. Mushnik in Little Shop of Horrors in 2011. He passed away shortly after his diagnosis from cancer, but not without leaving a lasting impression on his fellow cast members.

“He will always be remembered and admired for his deep passion and knowledge of theatre,” says Dr. Magsino-Barnabé (pictured inset at the auditions). “We are happy to receive a blessing from his wife, Deanne Spiegel, who plans for their family to attend our tribute at the Friday Night Gala.”

When Guys and Dolls first debuted on Broadway in 1950 it was a smash hit, winning five Tony awards. The musical was adapted for a 1955 film version starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine.

Songs such as “Luck be A Lady” and “If I Were A Bell” have become classics. Guys and Dolls has been described by some theatre historians as “the perfect musical.” For director Jeffrey Kohut, the choice of Guys and Dolls for the second all-dentist production is an excellent one.

“The music is swinging, hot, New York jazz. If you’re in Guys and Dolls you look cool, you move cool, you sound cool because the songs are cool.”

As each dentist is tested on singing and dancing ability during the auditions, Kohut’s excitement grows; he is astounded by the talent in the room. After the first pass of the first full number, Kohut high-fives Musical Director Marilyn Redekop and exclaims: “We’ve got a show!” Every dentist who auditions makes the cut for the cast.

research dayIt’s the annual celebration of research

at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry. But this year, Research

Day hits the road for the Winnipeg Convention Centre and will be held in conjunction with the annual convention of the Manitoba Dental Association.

“One of the goals of Research Day is to have the biggest possible audience

for our student and academic research scientists,” said Dr. Raj Bhullar, Associate Dean (Research). “Moving to the convention centre puts us right in the centre of the largest gathering of oral health professionals in the province.”

Once again, the day will be a showcase of Faculty research, featuring student and academic presentations along with an array of posters.

Student researchers will present their latest projects and will be joined

by academics from dentistry and dental hygiene as well.

Posters will be displayed throughout the day in the mezzanine area of the site and students will be on hand to discuss their work. A prize will also be awarded for the best poster presentation.

Admission is free with registration to the conference.

It is a cause that is near and dear to many of our hearts, as many of us have more than one family member or cherished friend that has been diagnosed with and suffered from cancer. With that in mind, the Manitoba Dental Hygienists

Association assembled a team for the 2012 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.

Our team was composed of third-year Dental Hygiene students, faculty, staff and instructors of the School of Dental Hygiene, and Dental Hygienists from across the province of Manitoba. Together, we raised more than $9, 000! This is $2,000 more than our previous year! Congratulations to Dr. Joanna Asadoorian, who individually raised over $6,000 towards our team’s total amount!

We were lucky to have beautiful weather the day of the run; blue Manitoba skies and the warmth of the sunshine. Members of our team participated in either a 1 km walk or a 5 km run.

We are extremely proud of our fundraising accomplishments

and will most definitely be participating next year! We look forward to making this an annual tradition, as it is a perfect way for us – as students, staff and alumni of the School of Dental Hygiene – to give back to our community.

All of the money that we raised will go towards helping fund, support and advocate for relevant and innovative breast cancer research, education and awareness programs, and a positive quality of life for those who are currently living with the disease.

On September 16, members of the dentistry Classes of 2013 and 2014 participated in the annual Terry Fox Run at Assiniboine

Park. The students ran or walked the 10 km route through the park and, despite the valiant efforts of many in our group, were still outrun by Dr. John Perry.

The students collected donations from friends and family for the Terry

Fox Foundation of which 100 per cent of the monies go directly towards cancer research.

Afterwards, the students (pictured above) enjoyed brunch hosted by Drs. Perry and Boorberg. Thank you to all for your effort towards this great cause.

The Terry Fox Run is an annual, non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions around the world in

commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise funds for cancer research.

Founded in 1981, the event is held every year on the second Sunday following Labour Day.

Since its inception, the run has raised close to $500-million via the Terry Fox Foundation.

Kickin’ Back inKelownaAnyone who has been to these parts would easily agree

that Kelowna is one of the nicest cities in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, as several alumni of the

University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry can attest. Located near Okanagan Lake in the province’s southern

interior, the land of the mythical sea creature Ogopogo was one of the latest tour stops for Dean Anthony Iacopino’s Office Visit Series.

As it turns out, the Dean’s visit was quite timely as it coincided with the annual meeting of the Thompson Okanagan Dental Society. To mark the occasion, area alumni were welcomed to Dinner with the Dean, several of whom turned up for the evening. Helping Hands

It’s one of the more curious secrets in Manitoba. Due to international licensing regulations, there is a large number of internationally trained oral health professionals who are unable to practice in Manitoba.

This number is mostly, if not completely comprised of new Canadians from the world over who have emigrated here in hopes of re-establishing a career and life outside their former homeland, wherever that may have been. Each must go through a lengthy and detailed process to ensure their knowledge and skills are sufficient to meet national standards.

Just how large is this particular group? To give you an idea, this past summer saw almost 400 internationally trained dentists evaluated over three days as part of the new National Dental Examining Board of Canada’s equivalency process.

It is a significant undertaking, one that also drew the participation of 15 graduates of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry who served as examiners this past June.

The two-stage testing begins with a review of fundamental knowledge, a multiple choice-style assessment. It consists of two books, each with 150 multiple choice questions with three hours allotted for each book. Sessions are held in the morning and afternoon of one day.

Only participants who score 75 percent or higher on the fundamental knowledge test are entitled to register for stage two: the assessment of clinical skills and judgment.

The clinical skills portion evaluates the performance of dental procedures on simulated patients (manikins) in a clinical setting. The judgment portion

evaluates clinical treatment decisions and radiographic interpretation.

The University of Manitoba was one of nine assessment sites across Canada, with about two dozen participants taking the exam here. Scoring of clinical procedures was done centrally in Ottawa, two weeks later. Manitoba alumni were involved in supervising at the faculty assessment site and the group pictured above all travelled to Ottawa to grade clinical work.

If successful in the equivalency process, participants are eligible to take the same NDEB exams that Faculty graduates take (a written, 300 multiple choice question exam) and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), which is a bell ringer station type of exam. If successful, they are eligible to be licensed in any jurisdiction in Canada.

Alumni of Distinction: Dr. Gerald Niznick (left) is presented with the 2013 Alumni of Distinction honour by Dr. Frank Hechter, the 2012 recipient of the award. It has become something of a tradition that the current recipient be presented with the award by the honouree of the year before.

It was a formula for success: Two of the best and brightest in Manitoba oral health, plus the ‘Great Eight’ of a 50 year anniversary class, multiplied by a gathering of close to 200 all added up to one exceptional

evening for the Faculty of Dentistry, the School of Dental Hygiene and their respective alumni this past autumn.

Once again, some of the best and brightest in Manitoba oral health gathered together for a fabulous Friday night of fun and festivities at the 2012 edition of the Alumni of Distinction awards banquet and celebration September 28 at the Fort Garry Hotel.

And once again, the highlight of the evening was the Alumni of Distinction awards, presented to Dr. Gerald Niznick of the Class of 1966 and Mrs. Diane Girardin of the Class of 1972 for dentistry and dental hygiene respectively.

“As Winnipegers, we tend to think of this as a second rate, two-bit place; somewhere to get away from. But I see it more as a stable, grounded launching pad that has produced some of the great citizens of the world,” Dr. Chris Cottick said, in delivering yet another stand-out performance as Master of Ceremonies for

the evening. “Our Faculty is blessed to have alumni who still think of their alma mater and support the next generation of world dental citizens like Dr. Niznick. We are also blessed to have talented clinicians and teachers like Mrs. Girardin. Both are crucial to continuing the excellent education provided here at the Faculty.”

Both recipients were warmly received by the packed house that filled the elegantly appointed concert ballroom at the historic Fort Garry Hotel in downtown Winnipeg on an unseasonably warm autumn night; each receiving long standing ovations from those in attendance.

“I would like to say how grateful I am for the excellent education I received at the University of Manitoba, both undergraduate and graduate, and I am honoured to have the president of the university here tonight,” said Dr. Niznick, a former Winnipeg resident who oversees his considerable business interests through various locations in the United States. “What I learned has done me well both in industry and in business and that is to strive for excellence and to stay focused.”

Born and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan before moving to Fort

Frances, Ontario, Dr. Niznick earned his degree in dentistry at the University of Manitoba before heading off for the California coast to begin what would become an exceptionally successful career as a businessman and oral health innovator and pioneer. With 35 US patents to his name, Dr. Niznick became a market leader in the dental implant field, by some accounts changing the landscape of this branch of the profession.

Through the years, Dr. Niznick has contributed generously to oral health education and research locally and internationally. Most recently, he returned to Manitoba with a commitment of over $500,000 in support of the Niznick Overdenture Program, targeting underserved and disadvantaged populations in the province, setting a record for the largest single donation in the history of the Faculty in the process.

This clinical treatment and research project, using one of Dr. Niznick’s latest one-piece implant inventions, provides training and support for post-graduate fellows at a number of Canadian Universities in a study being administered through the University of Manitoba.

How things have changed. Friday, September 28 marked the 2012 Alumni of Distinction awards banquet, the latest installment of this now-storied tradition at the University of Manitoba. Yet the 2012 edition of this prestigious evening was only the beginning. Through the years, the event has been nurtured, has grown and has developed to where it is today: An entire weekend celebration of alumni and relationships at the Bannatyne Campus oral health academy. The following series of articles focus on what a wild and wonderful weekend it was and how a modest occasion has matured into the full–scale celebration that was enjoyed by so many.

For example, you could expect to pay about 30 cents a gallon to drive around in your new car that would likely have run you about $3,000. University students of the day were looking at rent of about $100 for their apartment and could expect to drop roughly $300 on tuition for the fall session.

Such was the way of the world when the first group of students were completing their educational experience at the brand new Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. And it almost goes without saying that things have changed a bit since that time, including the surroundings within the building at 780 Bannatyne Avenue.

Even though the building itself didn’t actually exist until 1961, what was

brand new at the time has still changed quite a bit over the course of time.

“It’s almost unrecognizable,” remarked Dr. Gordon Hall, one of the students to take classes in what was the brand new Faculty of Dentistry. “The main clinic is still there and still looking much the same. But the rest of the building, well you could put me in there and I would be lost. I couldn’t tell you where we did what in the school anymore, other than the main clinic. It is very nice though; they have done it well.”

It was the first return visit for Dr. Hall in quite some time, although he did have some comfortable company for the tour that took place during Alumni of Distinction weekend at the Faculty held

over the last weekend in September. The North Western Ontario practitioner was joined by several of his classmates from that original class, all of whom were guests of honour at the 2012 Alumni of Distinction awards banquet and celebration held that weekend.

Included in that number were Drs. Fred Froese, Orville Heschuk, Irving Leb, Eugene Marks, Biruta Osins, Gerald Silverman and Roy Thordarson, all of whom returned to mark the golden anniversary of their graduation from the University of Manitoba.

In addition, Dr. Niznick has also received honourary degrees from a number of universities along with official accolades from a variety of other organizations for his benevolent contributions.

“And more importantly than all of that is the fact that he has not forgotten where he came from,” noted Dr. Frank Hechter in his introductory remarks. “He has not forgotten that Winnipeg was his home. He got his first degree at the University of Manitoba. He has remembered the Faculty in a variety of different ways.”

In accepting the award, the long-time innovator, who lists golf and flying as among his many passions, provided a photo-retrospective of his life and times with a message for those in attendance.

“The lesson is that you must be a lifetime student and keep your mind open to new opportunities,” he said.

Sharing the spotlight with Dr. Niznick was Mrs. Diane Girardin, recipient of the annual award from the School of Dental Hygiene. The long-time instructor at the school has received numerous teaching awards through the years in addition to a lengthy track record of service to the profession’s various administrative bodies.

“Diane’s love of teaching is exemplified by 20, count them 20 teaching awards including the prestigious W.W. Wood award for excellence in dental education and three in the most inspirational instructor category,” said Ms. Signe Jewett, last year’s award recipient in her introductory remarks. “The dental hygiene community has benefited because of the significant contribution that she has made due to her involvement, both locally and nationally.”

In accepting the accolade, the member of the Class of 1972 noted that none of her achievements would have been possible had she not decided to pursue post-secondary education.

“Well, I graduated from the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba, raised a family, and the opportunities did come,” she said. “I never lacked for a job and I belong to an oral health profession. I gave back the only way I could: I gave back my energy and my time.”

Adding to the celebration this year was a very special appearance by an equally special group of individuals. Eight members of the Class of 1962 – the first graduating class in the history of the Faculty – were welcomed as special guests of the University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association.

The Great Eight — Drs. Fred Froese, Gordon Hall, Orville Heschuk, Irving Leb, Eugene Marks, Biruta Osins, Gerald Silverman and Roy Thordarson — gathered together to formally mark the 50 year anniversary of their graduation as the first class of the Faculty.

Each was presented with a commemorative gift from the UMDAA during a special presentation as part of the evening’s festivities.

Dr. Hechter also offered a toast to the group while paying tribute to three members of the class who are no longer with us: Drs. Usher Claman, Dick Goerz and Taras Snihurowycz.

And while the majority of the group has managed to stay in touch through the years and stage reunions every five years or so, the weekend event marked the very first class reunion for Dr. Silverman.

“I really enjoyed this,” said the one-time Winnipeg resident who has spent the majority of his career in the Hartford region of Connecticut on the American East Coast, “and I told the guys I don’t think we should wait another five years before we do this again.”

The significance of such a milestone event was not lost on the evening’s host, who offered some personal reflections on his dental school experience.

“I wonder what thoughts and memories are running through their minds when they think of the past 50 years since they left dental school,” Dr. Cottick mused aloud. “It makes me think of my years in school; the tough times, like the complete denture in second-year lab that caused me to completely lose it and storm out and go sit down outside on the front steps to cool down; only to return and to find that my classmates had repaired the denture and returned it to my workplace.”

“Perhaps that incident wraps up the dichotomy of dental school: The good, the bad, the hard times and the frustrations, but with it the realization of the wonderful community to which I was joining.”

The appearance of the first Golden Anniversary class also officially kicked off a new tradition at the event: All classes marking their 50 year anniversary will be offered complimentary tickets to appear as special guests of the UMDAA.

In another special announcement, Dr. Anthony Iacopino officially launched the Faculty’s 50th Anniversary Legacy Fund.

“This trust fund is being established to support continued long-term enhancements at the Faculty and provide a mechanism for support of future generations of Manitoba-educated dentists,” the Dean of Denitstry said. “Individuals and classes will be encouraged to make gifts to this fund in recognition of their 50th anniversary milestone. I’m happy to announce that one member of the Class of ‘62 who couldn’t be with us tonight, Dr. Fred Weinstein, has already made the first donation to this fund.”

The legacy fund is in addition to the Taras Snihurowich Memorial Fund established a short time ago and led by the Class of 1987. This fund is dedicated to modernizing the student clinical support laboratory to be named the Dr. Taras Snihurowycz

Student Support Lab.As if all this were not enough, the Dean shared yet another

major announcement with those assembled by inviting everyone to the official grand opening of the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge at the Faculty on the Saturday after the banquet.

“Last year, Dr. Niznick followed the largest class gift in Faculty history from the Class of 1995 with the largest individual gift in Faculty history. This year, Dr. Jones Young of the Class of 1987 has provided the second largest individual gift in Faculty history: a $250,000 gift that will lead to designation of our new student lounge as the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge,” the Dean said to rousing applause. “We would also like to thank and acknowledge members of the Class of 1995 who were contributors to the student lounge renovation.”

The consensus from all on hand seemed to be one of genuine enjoyment and affection and a sense that the event was one where the whole was far larger than the sum of the parts.

“We felt the evening went great,” said Dr. Osins, who also holds the distinction of being the only female in the class that year. “We had a reunion dinner the next day at Bailey’s and it went so well that we decided that five years was too long; that we have to have the next reunion sooner than that.”

The warm memories flowed like a waterfall throughout the evening and well into the remainder of the weekend as the Great Eight recalled the most unusual experience that was the life and times of dental school a half century ago.

“To a certain extent, we were guinea pigs,” Dr. Osins said. “On the other hand, we were outnumbered by professors. There were 15 of us but if you count the medical staff, pathology, histology, we were really outnumbered. But they were all very warm to us.”

Throughout the camaraderie of the evening, stories were shared, memories revived and tales aplenty flowed from the group who revisited their alma mater for the first time in about a decade. While each member of the group had their own favorite stories to tell, all shared the common bond of making it through a challenging four year sojourn.

“We had a little bit of fun, but I’ll tell you, basically the whole class, we pretty much had our noses to the grindstone while we were there,” Dr Hall said. “The college felt they really had to pump enough into our heads to make us worthwhile because they were not an accredited college until they had a graduating class. We played around a little bit, but there was a

lot of good work going on. But some of our times were quite memorable, that’s true.”

Later in the evening, each member of the group was presented with a commemorative gift on behalf of the alumni association by Dr. Scott Leckie, UMDAA past president. The group’s appearance and contributions were also acknowledged by Dr. David Barnard in his remarks at the celebration.

“You have already defined yourselves as visionaries, trailblazers, innovators, explorers, creators and defenders,” the university president and vice chancellor said. “Our students are just beginning to define themselves and are doing amazing things. I bet you would have wonderful advice for these students who are just starting to pave their own paths in life. We were blessed with outstanding students when you were here. Our students today continue to make us proud. Like you, they embrace hard work; have a strong sense of purpose and an even stronger commitment to community. It has been an honour to be with you today.”

For several in the group, it was a warm welcome home.

“Unfortunately, I never went to any reunion other than this and it was my

own fault,” Dr. Gerald Silverman said. “No excuses; I should have

been there. I used to go to Winnipeg a lot. All my family

is there, and I used to go back and see people

It was yet another stellar soiree, one that succeeded in generating a heightened sense of community, as elegantly expressed by the evening’s host.

“As many of you know, I’m not afraid to declare my appreciation for the faculty that has allowed me into a wonderful profession and career. We, as alumni, have nothing to be ashamed of by our Faculty here on the edge of the great Central Plains. In spite of the often difficult trial that is dental school, we have all received an excellent education that has prepared us well to leap into the dental world, locally and internationally,” Dr. Cottick said. “Our alumni continue to affect the people of Manitoba and the world positively. And I, for one, am extremely proud to be an alumnus of the little faculty that could; one that has helped build the dental profession globally and locally for over 50 years.”

A few facts and figures from the year 1962, the graduation year of

the very first class of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry.

• The Beatles record Love Me Do.

• The Beverly Hillbillies debuts on TV.

• The first James Bond film Dr. No is released.

• John Diefenbaker is Prime Minister of Canada.

• $94.87: Average weekly take home pay for a factory worker.

• $1.25 minimum hourly wage.

• $1,520: Tuition to Harvard University.

• $300: Tuition to the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry.

• 20 cents for a fast food hamburger.

Perhaps more notable is what folks didn’t have back in the day.

“There were no computers or cell phones in 1962,” noted Dr. Biruta Osins of the Faculty of Dentistry’s Class of 1962. “In fact, most homes had a party line telephone – which meant two or more homes would share the same number with a different ring for each home. And TV was only in black and white. But in many ways we were happier and less stressed!”

It only took about 50 years, but The Bagel Line was finally reunited, if only for a very short time. Back in the day, intercollegiate athletics was an important part of scholastic life at the University of Manitoba.

Following this long-standing tradition was something that came quickly to students in the early days of the Faculty of Dentistry, starting with its very first class.

Soon after being established, the Faculty of Dentistry wasted no time fielding teams in several inter-scholastic sports leagues and enjoying some surprising success in those early days.

The first dental hockey squad hit the ice in the 1960-61 season and ran the table, going undefeated in the regular season. The team’s success was due, at least in part, to the tenacious trio of Gerald Silverman, Irv Leb and Eugene Marks, dubbed ‘The Bagel Line.’

“We were three Jewish guys and the coach was Jim Marshall, head of the endo department at the time,” Dr. Silverman recalled, “so we were called ‘The Bagel Line.’”

Backed by The Bagel Line, the team was said to have received great support from their fans in the Faculty, but came up short in a playoff match-up against a smaller yet faster side from St. Boniface College.

“We figured they were faster but we were bigger and stronger,” Dr. Silverman said. “But we never saw them. They skated around us, between our legs; it was like a slaughter. They destroyed us.”

Still, that first team set the standard, one that was followed by a championship the next season with a team led by Dr. Marshall Peikoff.

On the pebbled ice, dentistry teams would capture curling trophies in 1959 and 1960, skipped by Fern Lavoie and Ken Neuman respectively. Dr. Neuman would also add a pair of golfing trophies to his mantle with inter-faculty championships in 1960 and 1961.

Not to be outdone, the Faculty football club claimed dentistry’s first team championship in the fall of 1961, defeating commerce 42-14 in the championship game.

Then, of course, there were the unofficial games that didn’t always end quite as may have been planned.

“Memory is pretty faint, but Orville Heschuk and I ran the card games in the common room,” Dr. Silverman said with a laugh. “The common room was a place where faculty wasn’t supposed to come in. We would be having a card game and the odd time George Brass would come in and say ‘what the hell is going on here?’”

The next generation: Members of the Class of 2013 enjoyed an evening of celebration and tradition at the 2012 edition of the Alumni of Distinction banquet this past fall.

Banding together: Faculty academics and alumni teamed up for a pair of Continuing Dental Education events that ran in conjunction with the Alumni of Distinction weekend this past fall at the Faculty. This included (pictured right) Drs. Reynaldo Todescan, Gerald Niznick (Class of 1966), David Rusen (Class of 1974) who, along with Dr. Marshall Hoffer (Class of 1972), presented on implant dentistry before a packed house at the Faculty.


For this year at least, it could well be said that the Alumni of Distinction event really came of age. The co-production of the University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association and the Faculty of Dentistry hit new heights

in late September, completing a rapid evolution from a single, one-off event to a weekend full of activities to surround and celebrate the oral health family in Manitoba.

Under the steady hand of the UMDAA executive, events were carefully pieced together in order to maximize stakeholder value, thereby attracting as wide a group as possible to the various and sundry activities that took place over the weekend.

Things began in fine style, courtesy of a lecture by alumnus Dr. Gary Klasser, a featured event of the Winnipeg Dental Society. The Continuing Dental Education session was held in advance of the alumni association’s annual general meeting in a bid to encourage attendance by offering a first-class CDE opportunity.

“It was an honour and privilege in being invited for the alumni lecture by Winnipeg Dental Society. It certainly brought a flood of fond memories for me as I recalled the many times I attended these lectures,” said Dr. Klasser, who made the trek to Winnipeg from his office way down south in Louisiana for both the lecture and the evening banquet. “As an alumnus, I think the weekend was a wonderful event. It allowed one and all to reminisce and rekindle memories with former colleagues. Even though we only graduate approximately 30 students per year, the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba has produced some very accomplished practitioners and scientists.”

The Winnipeg Dental Society has long been considered the best CDE option for area practitioners and many members of the UMDAA believe establishing closer ties with the WDS would be a natural and logical progression for the association.

Another CDE opportunity was made available on Saturday morning as Dr. Gerald Niznick discussed the latest in implant technology along with a trio of academic colleagues. The event drew a packed house to the Faculty with literally every seat filled for the three–hour session.

The event also provided members of Siloam Mission management team a chance to acknowledge and thank Dr. Niznick and the university for their work in establishing the outreach programme that has had such a big impact on the lives of its participants.

“This whole project was certainly an amazing gift,” Floyd Perras, the mission’s executive director said. “Perhaps the Faculty of Dentistry doesn’t think about this but we now have 34 people who have teeth and can go forward and live on a level playing field. This is just a fabulous gift and I just want to thank you for that.”

Added to the weekend was the grand opening of the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge, the annual open house and the resumption of the Alumni-Student Hockey Challenge later in the evening.

The culmination of all the events clearly established the 2012 Alumni of Distinction weekend as one of the most elaborate and successful celebrations in recent memory and certainly provides ample momentum for the UMDAA going forward.

The important thing, however, is that the organization maintains a well thought out and measured approach to ensure a steady progression, according to the incoming president.

“It was good to see the numbers of people out there,” Dr. Kyle Gauthier said in reviewing the events of the weekend. “It’s slowly growing and that’s the important thing. We’re not taking steps backward. We’re always happy to hear any suggestions that people may have for their alumni association.”

Alumni at large will get their chance to meet and greet their colleagues as the UMDAA reception is once again scheduled for the evening of Thursday, January 24 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

R. Bruce Templeton (80) of Edina, Minnesota became a Fellow of the American College of Dentists at the convocation ceremonies in Las Vegas in October, 2011. Bruce and Laura (82) are practicing in Minneapolis. Bruce is chief of oral surgery and dentistry at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis and has recently been elected President of the Minnesota Dental Association.

Phil Poon (80) of Winnipeg, as Chair of the Canadian Dental Association advocacy committee, has received the CDA Distinguished Service award for an impressive record of service to the profession and community for over 30 years, during ceremonies held in Ottawa in April, 2012.

Tana Gilmartin (85) is one of only eight recipients in 2012 who were given prestigious scholarships of $1,000 from the American College of Dentists Foundation to enroll in the new three-unit graduate level course in dental ethics offered by Creighton University.

Cliff Swanlund (76) of Calgary AB, was appointed Regent for Alberta for a three-year term at the recent ICD meeting and convocation in Saskatoon.

Alumni who were also appointed at that meeting were Roy Thordarson (62) who became President, Brock Love (65) became Treasurer and Bill Christie (64) is a new committee member of the William J. Spence Memorial Foundation, a committee within the ICD, which helps to manage and recommend substantial funding of many humanitarian projects.

Allan Gerald Cogan (90), Manitoba Dental Association President and periodontist in Winnipeg, Bruce McFarlane (84), orthodontist in Winnipeg, and Gerald Uswak (89), Dean of Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan were the alumni from the University of Manitoba who were inducted as Fellows in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an International Honour Dental Organization, at their luncheon for 2012 Canadian Section Awards and Installation Ceremonies in Saskatoon, SK on September 14. Many of the students who received PFA table clinic scholarships were in attendance as well.

Faculty academics, Drs. Douglas Brothwell and William Wiltshire were also inducted as Fellows in the Pierre Fauchard Academy at the September ceremony. For more on this item, see page 24.

Winnipeg Dental Society (WDS) officers/stepladder have begun the 2012-13 year with the election of a new member in April, 2012, who starts as Secretary, Don Dziewit (94). Moving up to Sports Chair is Carmine Scarpino (81), then at Assistant Clinic Chair is Peter Kowal (84) who will be assisting Roberta Krawat (94) as Clinic Chair.

Cory Sul (95) is the current President of the Winnipeg Dental Society and is ably helped-out by Jeff Hein (94) as the Vice-President and Chair of United Way office. Dave Stackiw (91) gets to coast this year as immediate Past-President.

Michael Shapiro (99) with wife Lainie (who is an orthodontist) and two children, has been living and practicing in Michigan almost since graduation (after an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in University of Michigan). After 13 years at a successful family practice in Trenton MI, Mike has decided to specialize in endodontics and has been accepted to begin graduate school at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 2013.

Lawrence Watral (88) received the Governance Leadership Award from the Ontario Dental Association this past May. This was in recognition of four years of service as a member of the General Council of the Ontario Dental Association.

When you look back at it all, what an amazing weekend it was. After all the dust has settled and we take a moment

to reflect upon the events and activities of the days past, we are left with this one inescapable conclusion: the 2012 edition of our Alumni of Distinction weekend may well have been our most wonderful celebration ever.

Evidence of this is in abundance; so much so in fact that it may be too long to list!

Indeed, where to begin? Do we start with what was yet another tremendous Alumni of Distinction banquet, headlined by Dr. Gerald Niznick and Mrs. Diane Girardin, Alumni of Distinction honourees for dentistry and dental hygiene, respectively?

Was it the yet another stand-out performance from the podium by Dr. Chris Cottick who has truly mastered the Master of Ceremonies role?

We must also mention the appearance and thoughtful remarks of our president, Dr. David Barnard, who has become a most welcome and recurring guest at our awards evening.

Perhaps it was the packed house of attendees who turned up for the Saturday morning lecture on implant technology led by Dr. Niznick.

How about the official grand opening of the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge, one of the most significant and transformational projects ever undertaken at this institution?

Did I forget to mention the gathering of the original clan? Eight members of the Class of 1962 – the Faculty’s very first graduating class – who returned to their alma mater over the weekend to be honoured guests during the banquet evening’s festivities while also taking part in the many other activities that took place during our showcase weekend.

When you look back upon it all, what a grand and glorious weekend it was!

As most are no doubt aware, our annual Alumni of Distinction banquet has become the most significant event in our academic

year. Every year, it seems, we experience truly magical and memorable moments at this event. And this year was no exception as we were treated to so many wonderful presentations, thoughtful remarks and the high spirited fellowship that underscores the entire event and further fortifies our community.

And, just like in years past, the 2012 edition of the event featured many events and announcements that are new, different and very exciting for all members of our faculty fraternity.

The University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association kicked things off in high style with the official launch of their new initiative to honour every Faculty class marking their 50-year milestone, beginning with a tribute to the Class of 1962.

Eight members of that remarkable group – Drs. Fred Froese, Gordon Hall, Orville Heschuk, Irving Leb, Eugene Marks, Biruta Osins, Gerald Silverman and Roy Thordarson – were presented with a token of our collective appreciation and thanks in one of the many highlight moments of the evening.

Individuals and classes are encouraged to make gifts to this fund in recognition of their 50th anniversary milestone. Already, a member of the Class of ’62, Dr. Fred Weinstein, has made the first donation to this fund, in spite of the fact that he was unable to attend our gala evening. This comes in addition to the Taras Snihurowycz Memorial Fund, led by the Class of 1987, which continues to grow and will enable us to modernize our student clinical support laboratory to be named the Dr. Taras Snihurowycz Student Support Lab.

I was also pleased to have the opportunity to formally acknowledge and thank Dr. Gerald Niznick for his outstanding and indeed record-breaking support of our Faculty. Dr. Niznick has enjoyed nothing

short of a remarkable career and personal life as well. And throughout all of his success, he has never forgotten his home, his friends and his faculty community. In fact, I am told he even provided an air-lift home to Dr. Gerald Silverman back to Connecticut at the conclusion of the weekend. Such is the way of our 2012 honuree.

On the heels of this, I also had the pleasure of presiding over the official grand opening ceremony of our new Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge. This project – thanks to the most generous contributions of Dr. Young along with his colleagues from the Class of 1995 – is truly transformational, one that I invite each and everyone of you to come and see with your own eyes.

significantly thanks to the support for our new Graduate Pediatric Dental Clinic from Dr. Charles Lekic and the student medal and award in Endodontics courtesy of Dr. Biruta Osins. These large gifts are truly transformative in nature and allow the Faculty to make giant strides forward towards expanding and improving facilities, educational programming and the student experience.

I could go on and on to recount and acknowledge the many vast and tangible contributions we have realized over the past 12 months from so many groups and individuals, in thought word and deed. Many of these you will find chronicled in this edition of our publication.

What I will say is that our 2012 celebration was a stand-out success for all of these reasons and more. In my remarks at the banquet, I noted the significance of colours as they relate to our community, specifically the brown and gold of the University of Manitoba. In light of these events past, I am drawn to the inescapable conclusion that we have, in fact, set a new gold standard at our Faculty.

Our celebration has indeed grown and matured over the years.

An infusion of new blood was the prescription for the University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association this fall as the group

marked the end of another successful year of operation.

The year culminated during Alumni of Distinction weekend this past September, an event that has now grown and strengthened like never before. In addition to the Alumni of Distinction awards banquet, the annual celebration was expanded in 2012 to include two Continuing Dental Education events and the UMDAA Annual General Meeting where a new executive slate was formed.

Dr. Kyle Gauthier now takes the reins as the new president of UMDAA, with Dr. Danielle Jobb taking the role of vice-president of the alumni group. Dr. Jeff

Bergen is now the UMDAA secretary-treasurer while Dr. Anthony (Tony) Nowakowski was introduced as the new Faculty representative on the UMDAA board.

As its top priority, Dr. Gauthier said the new executive board remains focused on growing the alumni group, building on past successes and working with their constituent groups to foster better communications and continued awareness of the alumni group.

“We would like to strengthen our membership in the more recent years of graduation,” he said. “Most of our members are from classes in the 1980’s and the 1990’s and we’ve seen some pretty nice growth in those groups in recent years. So we would like carry that momentum forward and continue to expand and sign up more members from some of our more recent class years.”

To that end, the executive confirmed that January 1 will be the official kickoff date of the 2013 UMDAA membership drive. Part of the drive will include the annual hospitality night get-together to be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on the evening of Thursday, January 24.

The UMDAA will also have a booth in place at the convention centre over the course of the last weekend in January to welcome all members. Further, the UMDAA has also committed to streamline registrations through the electronic processing of membership dues.

Full memberships — those that include voting rights on all UMDAA matters — are available for only $50 for members within the province, $30 for those outside of Manitoba.

completion with a launch hoped for prior to year-end.

As well, the UMDAA executive board is pleased to confirm that the Alumni of Distinction weekend is confirmed for 2013 with the awards banquet scheduled for September 20, once again at the stately Fort Garry Hotel. This announcement comes on the heels of what may have been the largest and most successful alumni weekend ever held at the Faculty.

The group held its Annual General Meeting on the heels of a CDE presentation from alumnus Dr. Gary Klasser at the Victoria Inn, wrapping up just in time for everyone to head to the awards banquet that Friday night. The following day featured another UMDAA-sponsored CDE event with Dr. Gerald Niznick. Shortly thereafter was the official opening of the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge and the annual Open House, two events run in conjunction with the Faculty. The weekend’s final event was game one of the 2012 edition of the Alumni-Student Hockey Challenge, held at River Heights Arena.

Overall, it was the largest and most ambitious alumni weekend ever staged at the Faculty. Dr. Gauthier said the entire UMDAA executive board was very pleased with how well everything came together during the alumni weekend.

“I think having everything together was good in terms of getting people out and exposed to the Faculty again,” he said. “If we can continue to do this on a year-to-year basis, it would be great as I think it really goes a long way to keeping people involved and helping people realize that the alumni association is out there trying to help them and future alumni.”

One of the things that I continue to be most proud of is our alumni and alumni association. The support you have provided, in so many forms, has enabled the Faculty to reach new heights. In fact, it’s always been about you and making sure that our Faculty is something you can be proud of and is worthy of your strong engagement and support.

This unprecedented level of endorsement is proof positive that all of you are leading our collective hope and change at this Faculty. Together, we’ve been extremely successful with much more to look forward to.

To that end, I reiterate my personal and unwavering commitment to working with all of you to maintain our proud “traditions of excellence” and advance toward our exciting “horizons of change.”

It could well be said that Dr. Jones Young has a clear vision of the future – one that will certainly be remembered by current and future students of the Faulty of Dentistry and the School

of Dental Hygiene.The Faculty of Dentistry’s Alumni of Distinction weekend

took on a little added lustre this year as the Faculty had the opportunity to celebrate the official grand opening of the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge.

The opening was the official culmination of what was one of the largest infrastructure improvement projects in the recent history of the Faculty, one made possible through a gift from Dr. Young with help from his colleagues of the Class of 1995. The project nearly triples the size of the old student lounge space adding a host of new amenities in the process.

Dr. Young and some of his colleagues from the Class of 1987 staged a brief and informal reunion during the opening ceremonies held on the Saturday morning following the Alumni of Distinction banquet.

“One day I was driving by a retirement home and I saw there was a painting with a quote that said ‘one generation plants the tree, the next gets the shade.’ I found this very meaningful,” Dr. Young said. “It reflects how we should respect our previous generation and how we should treat our next generation. For this reason and others, the idea of a student lounge improvement project just grabbed my attention, for this is the place where

you will find a lot of laughter, a lot of friendship and fun. I recognize that this is the kind of tree that I would like to plant for our next generation of fine dentists and dental hygienists.”

The newly revamped student lounge is one of many improvement projects either underway or near completion at the Faculty. Along with the lounge, the student locker room areas have also been completely renovated.

A new staff area opposite the Wright Computer Lab was also recently completed with several other projects in the works.

as members of the Class of 1962 were in town for their Golden Anniversary reunion over the weekend.

The original Faculty pioneers were reportedly much impressed with the surroundings of their alma mater, much of which has changed substantively since ‘back in the day.’

“We toured the Faculty during the open house on Saturday guided by George, a student,” recalled Dr. Gordon Hall of the group pictured below left. “Good thing we had him too as with so many changes we would have been lost much of the time!”

In addition to being guests of honour at the Alumni of Distinction banquet, the group also staged a reunion over the weekend including a dinner at Bailey’s (below, right).

The Dean’s Office Visit Series continues to roll along leading into the autumn season with the second annual Alumni Reception in Calgary, Alberta.

This year’s edition of the congregation in Cowtown featured an added twist with a Continuing Dental Education course offered as part of the day’s activities. The Faculty presented ‘Emerging Evidence Supporting Periodontal-Systemic Links’ featuring the Dean of Dentistry with the keynote address.

The session was geared towards both dentists and hygienists and a good crowd assembled for the event and the reception that followed. Registration was also complementary at the session held at the Henry Schein regional office in Calgary on October 11.

Among those on hand to welcome the Dean back to Alberta were (pictured top to bottom, from left): Dr. Jeffrey Okamura (88) and spouse Susan, Dr. Frank Giesbrecht (70), Dr. Kulbir Manhas (07), Dr. Tasneem Rhemtulla (04), Ms. Nancy Adair (DH 83) and Ms. Genevieve Schallmann (DH 90).

The Dean also found time for a quick visit to the office of Dr. Alden Hurtig (75) (bottom pic, at right).

The Calgary visit also marked the unofficial launch of the Dean’s Continuing Dental Education Satellite Series. Dr. Iacopino hopes to conduct similar sessions in other communities in conjunction with various alumni events in the days ahead.

In the meantime, alumni of both the Faculty and School are reminded to mark their calendars for a number of alumni events slated for 2013, beginning with the annual Faculty Reception at the Pacific Dental Conference in Vancouver on March 7.

On the heels of this event, the Faculty will also be holding its annual Welcome to Manitoba reception at the American Dental Education Association’s annual meeting and exhibition slated for Seattle on March 17.

Dental Hygiene

We, the executive committee of the University of Manitoba School of Dental Hygiene Alumni Association, are pleased to announce that we are now officially up and running!

Much has been done in a very short time: we succeeded in raising $2,000 in start up funds needed to become a registered association; we opened a bank account and qualified for a grant of $5,000 towards association events from the Dean of Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Anthony Iacopino.

We are very thankful for the support rendered to us by the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association through their financial support as well as offering us access to their membership via email blasts, newsletter submissions, and speaking opportunities at their annual general meeting.

We are equally indebted to the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba who showed their support in the same manner.

We received financial assistance from two dentists and an office staff member at the School of Dental Hygiene.

The members of DH Class of 2012 also gave us a large contribution from residual monies raised for their graduation.

We are truly excited at how the dental hygiene community has rallied to see this project become a reality. A special thank you goes out to all those who have helped us to reach our goal by July, 2012.

Our membership list is now comprised of 63 active members that includes 14 current students in DH II and DH III, members of the Class of 2012, and four non-alumni dental hygienists.

We also recognize that we need to engage the current student body to maintain sustainability as an association and continue to seek support from SDH alumni at large in Manitoba and the rest of Canada. We continue to welcome one-time donations and contributions from those individuals who wish to remain anonymous.

Currently, work is underway towards setting up a scholarship for students enrolled in the Baccleaureate BSc program in DH at the SDH to receive funding to present a poster at a professional or academic conference, thereby increasing the SDH’s reputation internationally. Look for opportunities to support this project in upcoming communications.

In addition to being Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Iacopino is the director of the International Centre for Oral Systemic Health and a former director of the Wisconsin Geriatric Education Centre.

2012 Alumna of Distinction recipient Diane Girardin and husband Claude at the awards banquet.


The path of life can sometimes be a winding one that often leads to places that one could never have anticipated. This is especially true for those who travel through the realm of post-secondary education. Those who experience higher learning very often discover

myriad new pathways that lead to exciting and unexpected destinations.

Such would appear to be the case for the School of Dental Hygiene’s newly minted Alumna of Distinction recipient for 2012.

“Now I know how those who receive an Academy Award feel,” Diane Girardin said in accepting the annual honour at the 2012 Alumni of Distinction banquet this past autumn. “I really don’t feel that special. This is such an unexpected honour for me and I must tell you that I stand here before you as one very lucky and appreciative person who has many supporters behind her.”

It has indeed been a long and winding career path for the latest honoree of the School of Dental Hygiene. In fact, her career began almost by chance; certainly nothing that had been planned well in advance. By her own admission, the member of the Class of 1972 admitted her expectations after high school were not very ambitious.

“When I sat down and thought about what to say this evening, I reflected on the past and the present and thought about what a journey it was and what a journey it continues to be,” she said. “I was, and still am, a small-town girl and growing up, all I wanted to do at the time was to graduate from grade 12, get married and have a family.”

It didn’t take long for those aspirations to be realized. Her future husband, newly graduated from the University of Manitoba, suggested that this may be a pathway that his spouse might find a useful one to explore.

“He was the one who highly encouraged me to go to university saying it would provide me with many more opportunities in life”, she said. “Well, I graduated from the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba, got married, raised a family, and the opportunities did come.”

It may then have been a matter of fate, or perhaps even karma, but in any case, the choice proved to be a most beneficial one. Graduation led to a career divided between practice and teaching, the latter being a very successful venture. With over 20 teaching awards throughout her 20 years in the classroom, Mrs. Girardin ranks as one of the most heralded instructors in the history of the Manitoba oral health school.

That success has earned the long-time instructor considerable respect among her peers in the profession, including that of the school’s director. Dr. Joanna Asadoorian recalled how her colleague helped her transition from academia to instructor in the formative days of her teaching career.

“I was not so nervous about the students, but rather it was the faculty that I would be co-teaching with, who had done this for years, that I felt most anxious about. The most experienced was Mrs. Girardin,” she said. “I was so tense delivering that all–day session. By the end of the day, I was drained. Afterwards, Diane came up to me, and commended me on doing a great job. It meant so much to me. She made my heart soar that day with her positive feedback. I can assure you, Mrs. Girardin has had that kind of positive effect, with rare exception, on every student and faculty member that she has worked with.”

And, just for the record, it has been an experience that she has thoroughly enjoyed.

This past summer saw three new inductees to the University of Manitoba School of Dental Hygiene chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha. This past June, recent graduates (pictured above,

Founded in 1958 by members of the section on dental hygiene education of the American Dental Education Association,

Sigma Phi Alpha is dedicated to enhance the dental hygiene profession’s role and image in the delivery of quality healthcare to the public.

Membership in the society is comprised of elected dental hygiene educators and of graduates from accredited dental hygiene programmes who attain high scholastic achievement.

All three of the new inductees to the Manitoba chapter of the fraternity earned academic accolades and distinctions during their course of study at the school.


Dental Hygiene

Despite nearing the end of the fall term, here at the School of Dental Hygiene, things are in full swing! Our new Direct Entry students are immersed in their first

year of general studies and our second and third year dental hygiene students are busy with clinical and academic responsibilities.

Our BScDH degree completion program continues to be active with new students being accepted and current students completing program requirements. Continuing education activities continued this fall with a course in local anesthetics delivered to a large cohort of participants from across the country.

Faculty and staff are facilitating all of this activity along with conducting their own research and scholarly pursuits and service objectives. These are the many day-to-day activities of the School of Dental Hygiene.

Despite the challenge of keeping on top of all of the day to day tasks, as the Director, it is my responsibility to ensure we are also conscious of the big picture: Where is the dental hygiene profession and dental hygiene education going and, perhaps more importantly, how is the School involved in shaping this future?

In other words, we at the School of Dental Hygiene aim to be key drivers in the future of our profession as opposed to simply responding to it.

This summer I was fortunate to participate in an intense leadership course with the aim of further developing my skills as a leader of a health professional school so that I can facilitate curriculum development better and cultivate the ongoing evolution of the dental hygiene

profession. Things like facilitating a new school vision and mission statement, ensuring faculty and staff professional growth, enhancing the student experience and educational options at all levels, strengthening our collective role in research and improving the health services we provide to the public are all part of the broad lens I will be attending to in the coming months and years.

In various ways, I will be looking to you, members of our alumni, to help in these initiatives, though your involvement as an active participant, as a resource or simply for your ongoing support.

The coming year is shaping up to be an exciting one. For example, we anticipate more faculty participation in demonstrating their research accomplishments at the upcoming Manitoba Dental Association convention.

Dental hygiene international exchange student programming will be occurring this spring, and the International Federation of Dental Hygienists is holding their 19th International Symposium this summer in South Africa. There is also the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Dental Hygienists’ Association (CDHA) that is being celebrated at a conference in Toronto next October. And of course, our own Alumni gala will happen again this fall in addition to visits with our alumni slated to occur across the country over the coming calendar year.

I invite you to join me and your dental hygiene colleagues in participating not only in our day to day tasks, but also our exciting journey into the future through these many activities and others that will surely be taking place as well.

Besting the national standardschool oF dental hygiene students ace national exams

Students at the Faculty of Dentistry’s School of Dental Hygiene topped the national average in board exams this spring. It’s the second consecutive year that students at the University of Manitoba school outperformed in every

category of the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination (NDHCE).

“We are delighted to confirm the outstanding results realized by our students of the Class of 2012,” said Dr. Joanna Asadoorian, director of the School of Dental Hygiene, located on the Bannatyne Campus of the University of Manitoba. “These results are a validation of their hard work throughout their time at the school and their drive to become the best they can be in our profession.”

The exam is administered by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board and is based on national practice and education standards to assess a candidate’s readiness to enter practice. University of Manitoba students placed ahead of the national average in all categories of the test including course content and competency in addition to overall performance.

“The fact that this is the second straight year our students have done so well is truly a remarkable achievement,” said Dr. Anthony Iacopino, Dean of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. “Their success also reflects well upon our instructors at the school who should also be commended for their continued dedication to our student body.”

School of Dental Hygiene students placed ahead of the average performance of all candidates who wrote the examination in every subcategory of the test, exceeding 80 per cent in seven of nine areas. Categories ranged from biological and dental sciences to assessment, diagnosis and planning in addition to overall performance.

The NDHCB offers a credential that enables the holder to obtain registration or licensure to practice in virtually all provinces in Canada upon successful completion of the exam.

The success of the students of the School of Dental Hygiene mirrors that of their colleagues in dentistry who topped the national average in board exams the past two years running.

“Substantial effort has been directed towards improving our educational methodologies and our teaching practices,” said Dr. Doug Brothwell, Associate Dean (Academic). “Results like these show that we are on the right track.”

Like many other instructors, it is the experience of imparting knowledge and wisdom to the bright young minds before them that is often the most motivating and rewarding of the entire job.

“Why am I still doing it? Because I never tire of hearing ‘thank you Mrs. G’ or the ‘now I understand’ or what I call the famous ‘ah-ha’ moment,” she said, “when students’ eyes light up and they say ‘I get it, now I get it.’ Those moments are priceless to me and make up for all the extra time given. Surfers talk about riding the wave. Well, that’s what I feel like I’m doing. I’m riding my wave and at times like this I realize how blessed I have been and continue to be.”

The study is based on the premise that because dental hygienists have been targeted for practice expansion to improve public access to oral health care, they must therefore demonstrate decision making capacity. In the paper, Dr. Asadoorian shares the results of Phase I, a mixed methods study aimed at identifying factors believed to be influential in dental hygiene decision making and to develop a qualitative model to be tested in Phase II. Organizational and gender factors were hypothesized to be most influential.

Most of us were fortunate enough to encounter a teacher, instructor or professor who, through their efforts, had a positive impact on our academic lives. Each year,

the University of Manitoba offers outstanding graduating students an opportunity to honour teachers who have made such important contributions to their education.

And according to Marissa Dick, it was Ms. Sheryl Sloshower (pictured above, centre with university president Dr. David Barnard and Dr. Joanne Keselman) who fit the description well. The member of the dental hygiene Class of 2012 nominated her instructor for the 2012 Student Teacher Recognition Award.

“This is one of the best events of the university year,” Mark Torchia, director of University Teaching Services said. “Each year, graduating students give personal and touching tributes to certain men and women who made such a difference in their lives.”

The awards were handed out after graduation last spring. Dr. Frank Hechter was the award winner for dentistry, nominated by Phong Luong of the Class of 2012.


A pair of appearances at two prestigious conferences helped make for a busy and eventful summer for at least one Faculty academic. Dr. Anastasia Cholakis racked up the Air Miles over the summer with a pair of appearances,

at industry events in Europe and Central Canada.Leading off the twin bill was a trip to Toronto for the

annual spring symposium of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) in April.

The three-day meeting was billed as a gathering of leaders from the various segments of implant dentistry including diagnosis, treatment planning, hard and soft tissue grafting, implant placement, and implant restoration. There, Dr. Cholakis presented as part of the pre-symposium course program during the first of the three–day event.

From there it was a trip across the Atlantic for an appearance at Europerio 7 that ran this past June in Vienna, Austria.

“Europerio is the largest periodontal conference in Europe,” said Dr. Cholakis of the event staged by the European Federation of Periodontology. “It’s a huge honour

to be invited to speak there because they very rarely invite North American speakers. I had a 30-40 minute presentation on the topic of peri-implantitis, infections around implants and complications from implant treatment. That’s an area of interest of mine.”

The presentation, sponsored by Dentsply, reviewed some delayed implant treatment complications such as hard and soft tissue loss. Peri-implant mucositis, soft tissue recession or dehiscences and peri-implantitis were also discussed along with preventive measures and treatment modalities.

A member of the Faculty of Dentistry’s Class of 1992, Dr. Cholakis obtained a diploma in periodontics from the University of Manitoba in 1998, is also a fellow of the Royal College of

Dentists of Canada, and a member of the Canadian and American Academies of Periodontists.

Among the time-honoured traditions at the Faculty of Dentistry, Sports Day may be one of the most enduring of

all. Once again, this past August students, faculty and staff assembled on the field of play for a day-long session of bats, balls, barbecues and banter in the annual back to school fun-day challenge.

In keeping with recent tradition, the senior class – this time the Class of 2013 – laid claim to the Canine Cup for coming out victorious in the round-robin slo-pitch tournament.

And, for the second straight year, Team

Dental Hygiene took home the Plaque Plaque for having the best turnout of the day with Class of 2014’s Sam Huang taking the Prophy Trophy for outstanding effort.

The University of Manitoba Dental Students Association also treated the huge crowd to the usual sumptuous barbecue lunch on what turned out to be a letter-perfect day out at Old Exhibition Park.

Perhaps most remarkable: For the first time in at least four years, no injuries were reported outside of possibly a few sore legs and bruised egos.

Dr. Jones Young of the Class of 1987 is doing his part to help dentistry and dental hygiene students at the University of Manitoba forge lasting connections, friendships and trust through his funding of the Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge.

A strong feeling of alumni pride influenced Dr. Young’s decision to make a transformative gift of $250,000 towards the student lounge renovation. He recently celebrated his 25th reunion with his fellow ‘87 graduates and was inspired by the different ways in which his classmates have given back. From philanthropic gifts to teaching or volunteering, the Dentistry Class of 1987 has been very active. Dr. Young knew that it was time for him to make a major contribution to his faculty.

“Being able to practice dentistry for the last 25 years has been a joyful and rewarding experience for me,” says Dr. Young. “Throughout my journey, I have always been grateful and thankful to the Faculty of Dentistry for giving me my start.”

When the time came for Dr. Young to decide how he could best help his faculty, he knew that he wanted to make an impact on its students. “Students shape the future of dentistry,” he says. The faculty was in the process of renovating its student lounge to create a space for both dentistry and dental hygiene students to use. That project captured Dr. Young’s attention.

As a student, he recalls spending quite a bit of time in the lounge, simply relaxing and “chilling out.” It was the place where Dr. Young developed lasting friendships with his fellow students. He is excited that the lounge will now help to develop relationships between students from the two disciplines.

“I think the lounge is a great venue in which to learn through genuine friendship and trust,” says Dr. Young. “Now that it will be shared by students from both the Faculty of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene, it will be an even more valuable space.”

That space has been greatly enhanced through Dr. Young’s support, and that of all the donors to the lounge. The Dr. Jones Young Student Lounge is fully equipped with brand new comfortable seating, refrigerators and microwaves. It offers a cozy and stylish place for students to take a break between classes and recharge for their studies.

It is Dr. Young’s hope that his gift will be an inspiration to both his fellow alumni, and to current students. In his opinion, the dental school gave all of them their start and he would like to see more graduates give something back.

“I have read the quote, ‘One generation plants the trees, another gets the shade,’” says Dr. Young. “This exactly reflects my reason for making this gift. The dental school has thrived many years thanks to all

the pioneers and leaders who came before me and my generation, and I feel that it’s our turn to carry on this legacy.”

The generosity of alumni also makes an impact on the students of today. By contributing to a happy student experience, alumni leave a positive impact on current students that can develop a greater passion and loyalty in them for their school and profession. Dr. Young would like to see a strong legacy of giving develop as a result of his and other generous donors’ contributions.

“This gift is a token of my appreciation for all the goodness and blessings that I received in Manitoba,” says Dr. Young. “I am inspired and motivated by our Dean Anthony Iacopino’s vision, passion and sincerity and I hope my fellow alumni will share in that vision and give back to the school that gave us all our start.”

The student lounge was supported by many dedicated donors in addition to Dr. Young, including the Dentistry Class of 1995, the Faculty of Dentistry students and the School of Dental Hygiene students. The Faculty of Dentistry would like to thank them all for this steadfast support.

“Dr. Mazurat will be expanding the role developed by the previous director, Dr. Lawrence Stockton, who retired last year and has been continuing to manage this area on a part-time basis,” Dr. Anthony Iacopino said in an announcement to all staff at the Faculty. “Dr. Mazurat has been working closely with Dr. Stockton for several years and is ideally suited to assume this new and important role.”

Dr. Mazurat will be transitioning from her traditional teaching responsibilities in Restorative Dentistry to full-time administrative and management duties associated with all existing and developing international training programs, in addition to overseeing the newly implemented screening program for patients who present at the Faculty for treatment.

As well, Dr. Mazurat will continue to serve as the Director of Infection Prevention and Control for the Faculty, assisting various course directors and staff with policies/procedures in this critical clinical area, Dean Iacopino said.

This past October, the Faculty of Dentistry celebrated its annual awards night. It was a great pleasure to see that nine out of 14 awards for excellence in teaching went to the internationally trained academic affiliates.

I would like to thank the students for recognizing the quality and approach of the academic affiliates teaching at our school. Please join me and congratulate Drs. Reynaldo Todescan, Charlene Solomon and Renato Roperto for their achievement and extend the congratulations to Drs. Tony Nowakowski, Derek Gaudes and Marshall Hoffer, who also were awarded this year. Dr. Rodrigo Cunha was also presented with the Staff Award by Dentistry II students.

As our Dean, Dr. Anthony Iacopino said in the MDA Bulletin, “The more current method of learning is more self-directed. Students and faculty interact more freely and the student becomes an active participant in learning.”

This is a great achievement for all.
