The Banking Concept of Education

The banking concept of education is brought about by Paulo Freire and states that education is suffering for narration sickness and it is turning students to be objects, no allow them to express their ideas and develop their knowledge. One of the most argumentative concepts is well-known as the banking concept of education, where students have to memorize what the teacher is teaching to them, even if they do not know what the information is about and then they are required to be tested on those facts. Another main concept of education is the relationship between teachers and students. There are many arguments on what is the proper meaning of a successful educative system should consist of and if the banking concept of education is an effective way of teaching since it has been teaching for many years.According to the article The banking concept of education by Freire, states that teachers are filling students with context of his narration and they have to memorize it and repeat. That means that teachers treat students like they should be below them and that the student needs to follow everything the teacher says without question. When I was in high school, I had a teacher that would not take the time to explain the lesson when I did not understand because she already explained it during the class. She thought I did not put attention when she was explaining and she was not going to waste her time to help me understand something she already explained. I noticed that the only thing I needed to do it was to investigate with my classmate and try to memorize the math problem to pass my class with good grade even if I did not understand anything. She never gave me a chance to express my ideas. She did not help in. As I can see, problem posing education allows students to develop their ideas, attitude and value because of the communication between the teacher and students. I think while students have a good communication with their teacher, they can learn from each other because they are actually thinking for themselves. That means that the teacher can learn ideas from the students just as the students are going to learn from the teacher. For example when I was in a reading class, my professor was explaining a passage that we were reading together and I gave her an idea about the topic we were discussing and she talk me that it was a good idea and we discussed it together. I take an active role in this class and we obtained the idea that we needed to figure out in the passage and I felt happy because I was working with my professor and that helped me a lot. I learn from this action that when students have a good communication with their teacher, they always will learn what they need to. One of the arguments about of education system is that education must be developed by each person separately. But I think education is the way that people pass information, ideas, knowledge and experiences peaceably to others. That means that when the teacher talks, the students listen. In the Banking concept students are not allows to active participate in education, so the transfer of information is only in one way. Freire describes the education method as harsh and necrophilic. For example when I first started my first semester, I was very shy and did not speak at all. In the start of everything, I just listen to the professor and tried to capture the information she was giving. I felt like I just have to listen and learn what the professor was teaching. I did not feel like I had the right to speak because she always was talking about what we have to do and never let us to express our ideas or opinion. And as I say before that the sharing of knowledge and experiences is transfer by the passing of this information from one person to another. In the Banking concept of education students are view like an account where the teacher deposit his or her ideas, argument and students have to memorize and follow them. Freire also argues that the students are ignorant and the teachers are the only one that has the knowledge and skills because of the way that teachers filled the students with the contents of his or her narration, making them adaptable instead of change the world and provide new ideas to the student concept. I think when students work with their teacher, they can learn more and they are going to develop their critical thinking instead of being adaptable or manageable. In my opinion looking back on my learning experience in high school, I just learned and memorized information just to pass my class without full understanding why the information was important and why I was learning it. In problem posing, education is a great way for student to learn and think beyond. The problem-posing concept does not only help students to get a good understanding but also teachers can learn from student. I thing both the teacher and the student have to work together to get a better system of education in the future.
