Allmannajuvet in Sauda and the abandoned zinc mines from the late 1800s have inspired architect Peter Zumthor to create yet another historical art installation along the National Tourist Routes Allmannajuvet, with its character- istic landscape and rich cultural history, is one of the 10 largest attractions along the National Tourist Routes. In 2002, world- renowned architect Peter Zumthor was commissioned by the Norwe- gian Public Roads Administration to design a tourist route attraction for the purpose of welcoming visitors and bringing the old mining history of Sauda back to life. The simplis- tic buildings are inspired by the mining operation, the drudgery and the workers’ strenuous everyday lives. The installation consists of a museum building, a café building, toilet and parking facilities, paths and stairs. All the buildings were prefabricated in Saudasjøen and then assembled in Allmannajuvet. The exterior support system consists of creo- sote impregnated laminated wood. The exterior walls of the building consist of 18 mm plywood sheets and jute burlap, coated with a Ger- man acrylic material (PMMA). The interior walls have been painted in a dark colour to resemble a gallery. The foundation work of the museum building and the café building, with its high demands for precision, is some of the most demanding work carried out in Norway. The parking facility has been ma- soned with natural stone from Har- danger. The stones were transported from Jondal to Sauda. The visible corner of the wall is approximately 18 metres tall and has been firmly fixed three metres to the riverbed. The zinc mines in Allmannajuvet were in operation from 1882 to 1898. 12,000 tons of ore was produced dur- ing those 16 years. The first discov- ery of ore in Sauda was recorded on 2 October 1881. The ore was transport- ed by steamboat along Saudaorden and sold abroad. In the first years, the ore had to be transported by packsaddle from the mines to the fiords. The horses carried 100 kilos of ore; the men each carried 25 kilos. In the summer of 2011, Steilne- set Memorial in Vardø was opened. The attraction was a collaboration between Zumthor, artist Louise Bourgeois and historian Liv Helene Willumsen. While Steilneset was raised in memory of the people in Finnmark who fell victim to the government’s witchcraft persecu- tions in the 1600s, Allmannajuvet emerges as a monument of the min- ing operation and the miners’ life of hardship in the late 1800s. The National Tourist Routes attrac- tion comprises 18 selected drives through beautiful Norwegian scenery, where the experience is enhanced by innovative architec- ture and thought-provoking art. The tourist routes are varied and travel through areas with unique qualities of nature, along coasts and fiords, mountains and waterfalls. Allmannajuvet i Sauda og dei nedlagde malmgruvene frå slutten av 1800-talet har inspirert arkitekt Peter Zumthor til å skape nok eit historisk verk langs Nasjonale turistvegar.

Allmannajuvet med sin særeigne natur og rike kulturhistorie er ein av dei 10 største attraksjonane langs Nasjonale turistvegar. I 2002 fekk den verdskjente arkitekten Peter Zumthor i oppdrag av Statens veg-vesen å teikne ein turistattraksjon som kan ta imot besøkande og le-vandegjere den gamle gruvehistoria i Sauda. Dei enkle bygga er inspirert av gruvedrifta, slitet og arbeidarane sin strabasiøse kvardag. Anlegget består av eit galleri, gruvekafé, toal-ett, parkering, stiar og trapper.

Alle bygningane er prefabrikkert i Saudasjøen og deretter montert i Allmannajuvet. Det utvendige beresystemet består av kreosotim-pregnert limtre. Utsida av bygget består av 18 mm kryssfinerplater og jutestrie som er belagt med eit tysk spesialbelegg (pmma). Dei innvendi-ge veggene er malt mørke og minner om ein gruvegang. Fundamente-ringa av galleriet og kaféen med sin høge krav til presisjon, er noko av det mest krevjande som har vore gjort i landet.

Parkeringsplassen er mura opp med naturstein frå Hardanger. All stein blei frakta frå Jondal til Sauda. Det synlege hjørnet på muren er ca. 18 meter høgt og er solid fundamentert tre meter ned i elvegrunnen.

Sinkgruvene i Allmannajuvet var i drift frå 1882 til 1898. I løpet av 16 år produserte gruva 12.000 tonn malm. Det første registrerte malmfunnet i Sauda blei notert 2. oktober 1881. Malmen blei skipa ut med dampbåt

langs Saudafjorden og seld utan-lands. Dei første åra måtte malmen fraktast med kløv ned til fjorden frå gruvene. Hestane bar 100 kilo malm, og mennene 25 kilo kvar.

Sommaren 2011 blei Steilneset Min-nestad i Vardø opna. Attraksjonen blei til i samarbeid med Zumthor, kunstnaren Louise Bourgeois og historikaren Liv Helene Willumsen. Mens Steilneset er reist til minne om ofra for styresmaktene sine hekseforfølgingar i Finnmark på 1600-talet, står Allmannajuvet fram som eit monument over gruvedrifta og arbeidarane sine harde kår på slutten av 1800-talet.

Attraksjonen Nasjonale turistvegar er 18 køyreturar gjennom praktfull norsk natur der opplevinga blir sty-rka med nyskapande arkitektur og tankevekkande kunst. Turistvegane er varierte og går gjennom område med unike naturkvalitetar, langs kyst og fjordar, fjell og fossar.

Nasjonal turistveg Ryfylke går mellom Oanes ved Lysefjorden og Hårå i Røldal, og er 260 km lang.
