In their busy lives it is paramount that teenagers have a good balance between study, homework, sport, hobbies, family time and relaxation. Extra curricular activities are particularly important for teenagers and have many potential benefits such as:

Learning time management and prioritizing• – as adults we become very used to juggling a variety of different tasks and commitments. Teenagers need to learn how to do this as well and being involved in extra curricular activities provides ample opportunities for development of organisational skills, time management and prioritizing.Getting involved in diverse interests• – It is important for teenagers to have a variety of interests. A combination of physical activities as well as technology-based interests is best.Learning about long-term commitment • – When teenagers join an activity, team or club, they commit themselves to that activity for a period of time. They learn more about responsibility and teamwork.Making a contribution• – extracurricular activities allow your child to make a contribution in some way. It shows that they are thinking about others as well as themselves and contributing to a cause/team. This also contributes to their growth as a whole person.Develops self-esteem and relationship skills• – often, being involved in extra curricular activities helps to raise self-esteem. Often teenagers may find talents and interests they didn’t know they had and can develop new friendships and widen their social circle.Helps with job applications • – Employers are often looking for young part time employees who are involved in extra curricular activities. They are looking for students who are making a contribution to society and involved in sport, music, debating, social justice activities or other pursuits.

While involvement in extra curricular activities has many benefits, it is important to not over commit yourself. Being involved in a few activities is great, but being involved in too many things can have a negative impact on your study, rest and recreation. It is important that teenagers don’t try “to do it all”, but have a passion and commitment to a few activities which will build character and provide much enjoyment.

All Saints Girls offers a variety of extra curricular activities such as vocal ensemble, debating, public speaking, various sports, inter-school competitions, drama club and many more. The local Liverpool area also offers a wide variety of clubs, sports and activities.

Parent-Teacher Interviews Semester OnePlease note the following times for Parent-Teacher meetings this Semester:

Wednesday June 24 3.30pm-6.00pm 6.45pm-8.30pmThursday June 25 8.30am-12.00pm 1.00pm -3.30pm

All interviews are scheduled for five minutes and allow for positive dialogue and feedback between parents, teachers and students. Students are to attend these meetings in their full College Winter uniform. These meetings are an important part of the development of each student and enable parents to gain an understanding of their son(s) and daughter(s) progress and to be involved in establishing revised goals for Semester Two. Parents are encouraged to maintain this dialogue with teachers throughout the year, particularly if they have any concerns.

The online booking system will operate again this year and will open to all parents on Friday June 12 at approximately 4.00pm.

UniformA reminder to all parents to read the winter uniform, sports uniform and hairstyles/grooming policies on page 15 of the Student Diary. Any student who does not comply with these policies will incur consequences, or be sent home from school to correct the issue, particularly if this is a repeat offence. Please support the College by ensuring your son presents himself in accordance with these policies every school day. Thank you for your support of the college.

It has been a busy term so far.

Last week the Year 10 girls had their Retreat, which was a great way for the girls to take time out, spend time with their friends and become closer to God. They all enjoyed themselves thoroughly! I thank all of the staff who gave up a night with their families to facilitate the Retreat, especially Ms D’Auria for all of the preparation that went into these two days. I would also like to extend a word of thanks to Fr Pierluigi who braved the cold weather to come to the Tops to celebrate reconciliation with the girls.

World Youth Day is a little over a year away and I encourage students in Years 9 and 10 to consider this opportunity to travel to Krakow (the home of St John Paul). It is an awesome experience to travel with your peers to experience the Holy Spirit among the millions of other young Catholics on pilgrimage. You will be able to experience catechesis and mass each day, leading up to the sleep out and long walk to the site of the World Youth Day Mass celebrated by Pope Francis. I understand that the cost is large, but there are many ways we can fundraise for this as a school. If students are interested, we are still accepting applications, so please see Mrs McDonald and Ms McPherson for further details. Many Catholics have attended in the past and it has ignited their hearts with a love for Christ unsurpassed by anything. Students will be learning more about this in the RE classes in the upcoming days.

The staff have been celebrating mass together once a fortnight to celebrate the presence of Christ in our community. This has been a very fruitful experience and a wonderful way to begin the day. The staff would like to open this up to students from the boys and girls school. The mass begins each Wednesday B at 7:45am in the Prayer Room. If there are students who are at school or can make it to school for this, I believe it would be an even better way for our community to celebrate our strong sense of unity.

Students from both schools attended an Evangelisation Day at Patrician Brothers, Fairfield this week and the Steve Angrisano’s Open Heart Concert last Friday night. Both of these events were a success and I would like to thank all students who attended as well as Ms McPherson, our Youth Ministry Coordinator, for organising and accompanying them.

We have the Year 7 Retreat for the boys coming up on 17th June. I hope all of the boys are eagerly awaiting their first experience of a high school Retreat. I know I am!

We continue to pray the Rosary each recess in the Prayer Room, if any students would like to join the group, please feel free to come along. We pray one decade each day and it helps us to grow spiritually. We have all become accustomed to praying the Angelus now and it really does allow us to centre our lives and our day on God as we stop to pray together each day.

On Wednesday the 20 May four year 10 students participated in the prestigious QUOTA Student of the Year competition. This involved an afternoon of paneled interviews, followed by an evening of public speaking and impromptu speech tasks.

Janeille R, Sarah B, E.J. S and Connor S spoke eloquently on current affairs, competing alongside students from schools including Cerdon College and Belfield College. The judging panel included local MP Ms Melanie Gibbons and awards were presented by Mayor of Liverpool City Council, Mr Ned Mannoun.

A very special congratulations to Janeille R, who won the competition and will move on to the Regional level in August. All Saints Senior student and former Boys’ student,

Glyn M, presented Janeille with her trophy, having won the competition in 2014.

A special thanks to Ms Burke for assisting our students in preparation for this event.

ASCGC Food RevolutionFood revolution is a movement run by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The aim of the day is to educate young people about the importance of cooking and eating healthy food. Not only does it concentrate on the importance of healthy food, but also highlights how easy it really is to gather, prepare and cook a yummy, healthy meal. ASCGC Food Revolution took place on Friday 15th May 2015; TAS classes watched the Food Revolution video and discussed the purpose and importance of the day. Food Revolution is to provide more awareness, therefore the TAS department came up with a grade cook off so all the students can get involved. It involved 5 participants from each grade to make Jamie Oliver’s ‘squashed sandwich’ in record time whilst being blindfolded. Overall the students had an enjoyable lunchtime whether they were participants or the

audience. It was marvellous to see how much confusion there was when nobody could see the ingredients to make the sandwich. A big thank you to the TAS department: Mr Wayne Au, Miss Rebecca Lau, Mrs Annette Firenze and Mrs Karen Williams for all their preparation and assistance. Also a massive thanks to Mrs Har for the photography. Thank you also to all students and staff that were involved and supported with the day. It was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to our Grand finalists: Alannah H (Year 7), Abeer S (Year 8), Alexsie M (Year 9) and Rachel T (Year 10). You all did a wonderful job.

Food Revolution reiterates the importance to be aware of what you eat, where it comes from and is it healthy? Over 42 million children under the age of 5 are either overweight or obese worldwide; this is our chance to create a more positive lifestyle and future for our children.

More information and great recipes go to:http://www.foodrevolutionday.com/#coUSdJGOaHBZJcmW.97

Stay healthy and stay tuned for the ASCGC Food Revolution Champion.

Youth MinistryOpen Heart Concert 2015

On Friday night 22 May two Year Ten students, Faith M and Marija J, went to St Patrick’s Sutherland together with All Saints Senior College to attend the Open Heart Concert. The evening started with a sausage sizzle and time to socialise with students from other Catholic schools in the Sydney Region. This was followed by a concert by Steve Angrisano, performing a number of songs that got all the students involved and in the spirit of their faith. Overall, despite the rainy and cold weather; it was a pleasant evening with all students and staff that attended. Thank you to CEO Sydney Youth Ministry team for the organisation and St Patrick’s Sutherland for hosting the event.

God bless, Danielle McPherson Youth Ministry Coordinator

Year 10 Retreat 2015 “Go Make A Difference, Go Light Your Candle!”

On Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd May 2015, Year 10 attended a spiritual Retreat at The Tops Conference Centre at Stanwell Tops. The girls experience was enlightening and at the same time was a restful and peaceful break from their exams.

The weather was cold but sunny the first day, however, we had rain the second day but this did not take away anyone’s focus on the retreat and the girls worked enthusiastically in their sessions. It was a special time of the year for the girls as the Retreat centred around, “Going out and making a difference”. Their symbol this year has been “The Candle” where the girls are encouraged to go light the world and make a difference as young women who have been encouraged to be empowered and intelligent individuals, and to become strong and gracious

young women. Keeping in sight that Christ is our Light who aspires us in our life every day. The Retreat was only a start of their journey and not the finish or the end but a challenge.

I would like to thank Father Luigi for coming to the Retreat to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation to the girls and to my fellow colleagues and team members who worked hard and long hours. Thank you for making this work as I could not have done it without you - Mrs Majurdic, Ms Lau, Mrs Kirkland, Mrs Aguiar, Mr Donaghy, Ms O’Shea, Ms McPherson, Mrs Hurst, Mrs Basly and Mrs McDonald for giving their time so generously.

Maria D’AuriaYear 10 Coordinator

Some emails from the girls about the retreat:

“Thank you so much for your preparation and time teachers! This really opened my eyes, I never realised how good this spiritual experience was at our Year 10 Retreat. Samantha R 10 Xavier

Thank you Mrs D’Auria and teachers for sharing this Retreat with us. The Retreat was definitely an experience for us to treasure. The stories we shared and the memories we made together were enlightening and heart-warming. The bonds that were made and the smiles that appeared on each girl’s faces are a big part in the overall memory made that we will treasure forever. This Retreat will definitely not be forgotten. In 2015 All Saints Catholic Boys College and Liverpool Council have joined together with other schools in the Local Government Area to participate in a School Environmental Management Plan. The program is specifically waste focused and aims to provide a holistic, practical and curriculum based approach to sustainability.

EnviroCom was engaged by Council to audit the Boys College waste and to identify the composition of the waste, how much of that waste could be recycled and then develop recommendations to reduce waste generation and waste to landfill.

The audit showed that Disposable paper made up 1.52% and Office paper/newspaper 0.95% of our outdoor bin waste. With this information Year 7 students have decided to contribute to the program and implement stage one of the recommendations. Year 7 Students have placed blue recycling bins in and around the College including busy staff office areas. Each day the College office helper collects and empties these high Vis bins into larger “paper bins” that are collected by Liverpool council fortnightly.

During Term Two the boys will start stage two of the program by looking at ways to collect Recyclable plastic containers, 9.7%, Tetra Packs, 6.84%, Plastic film wrap, 6.46% and Cardboard 2.09% of our College waste in the same manner as we do at home using yellow capped bins.

As we look toward the future with a truly whole school approach the boys envisage introducing an organic recycling system such as a worm farm and or compost bins.

Thank you to staff members Wendy Jarrett and Joe Gauci for their help starting up the project and Year 7 Students Aiden A and Marcus H for taking the leading role and responsibility for the project.

Family Feud is coming to All Saints!

To fundraise for Kids Helpline, we will be holding our first ever Family Feud gameshow at All Saints Girls. After surveying students at our school, 10 of our chosen teachers will have to guess the most

popular responses to the questions. They will be tested on their knowledge about teenagers.

This event is being held in the PA Hall on the 10th of June, week 8. Audience will pay $2 to enterand watch the show during lunch time. All money raised will be going to Kids Helpline, which is a

free, 24 hours counselling service.

We would love for everyone to join in the fun and support the teachers! Hope to see you there!
