Regional Service OverviewCTA runs buses (routes 1 to 206) and elevated/subway trains serv-ing the city and 35 nearby sub urbs. Most routes run daily through late evening, ev ery 10 to 20 minutes. Sunday schedules apply on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
PACE runs buses throughout the suburbs (routes 208 and above), and many routes connect with CTA. Major routes run daily through mid-evening, ev ery 30 to 60 minutes. You can use your CTA Transit Card, Chicago Card®, Chicago Card Plus®, or certain CTA Passes to ride.
METRA runs 11 suburban commuter train lines from sev er al down town Chicago terminals. Rush hour service is frequent; otherwise every 1 to 2 hours. Most routes run daily. Fares are sepa rate, but a Link-Up Pass is available to Metra monthly ticketholders for use on CTA (weekdays 6am–9:30am and 3:30pm–7pm) or Pace (anytime).

ROUTE Monday–Friday Saturday Sunday/HolidayAccessible Bus ServiceAll CTA buses are accessible to people with disabilities. CTA buses “kneel” at every stop, lowering the bus to curb height. All buses also have ramps at the forward doors; anyone can ask for the ramp to be deployed.
Other accessibility features include priority seats and wheelchair securement areas. Automated voice announcements — both interior and exterior — help make stop, route and other information accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. LED signage on CTA’s buses enables people who are deaf or hearing impaired access to this same information.
Accessible Rail ServiceAll CTA trains provide space for wheelchairs. The vast majority of CTA’s railcars have a designated wheelchair securement area and ADA-compliant doors – a minimum of two cars per train have these features. All CTA railcars have Braille signage, priority seats, and both interior and exterior stop and route recorded voice announcements.
“Gap fillers” are available at all stations to bridge the space between platform and train. If you need a gap filler to get on a train, ask the Customer Assistant or train operator for assistance.
Accessible stations have elevators and/or ramps to help customers reach platforms. Elevator status is updated hourly. For information on elevators that are temporarily out of service:
then press 7.
Priority SeatingPriority seating is for customers with disabilities and seniors. Please move from a priority seat when requested. Please allow customers with disabilities to board CTA buses and trains first.
Customers who use wheelchairs or scooters have top priority to the flip-seat wheelchair securement areas on CTA buses and trains. Customers with other disabilities and seniors have top priority to the fixed priority seats on all of our vehicles. All other customers may sit in these seats unless they are needed by customers with disabilities or seniors.
Get estimated arrivals with CTA Bus TrackerSM and CTA Train TrackerSM
Text us like we’re your new best friendBefore you go, look up estimated arrivals using either CTA Bus Tracker or CTA Train Tracker on our website and take note of the text messaging instructions. They look like this:
Text CTABUS 550 to 41411 for estimated arrivals.
Text CTATRAIN THOR to 41411 for estimated arrivals.
Be sure to write your text with “ctabus” or “ctatrain”, then a space, then the stop ID. If you don’t know the ID for the stop you’re going to use in advance, you can look up bus and train stop IDs by texting CTABUS [ROUTE] or CTATRAIN [ROUTE COLOR] to 41411.
Otherwise, specific instructions are now posted at the bottom of each CTA bus stop sign and on timetable posters located in each train station.
Visit transitchicago.com/howto for more detailed information, advanced options, and complete lists of stop IDs. Note: Message and data rates may apply. Check with your mobile carrier first. If you need help, e-mail us at [email protected].

CTA is rebuilding the south Red Line from just north of Cermak-Chinatownto 95th/Dan Ryan.
The work will benefit Red Line riders for decades to come—through fastertravel times, increased reliability, and spruced-up stations with a variety of improvements.
Starting May 19th, the south Red Line will be completely closed for five months, from the Cermak-Chinatown station to the 95th/Dan Ran station.CTA will offer several alternative travel options during this closure tominimize the impact on customers as much as possible.
Project scopeCTA will replace all of the ties, rails, third rails, drainage system and ballast(the stone material that holds the ties in place) in the Red Line right-of-way. Additionally, eight stations along the Dan Ryan Branch will be improved, from basic enhancements like new paint and better lighting to additionalcustomer amenities, like new benches and bike racks. New elevators willbe installed at the Garfield, 63rd, and 87th stations—making the entiresouth Red Line fully accessible.
Why is this work necessary? The Dan Ryan Branch opened in 1969, when Richard Nixon was in theWhite House, a gallon of gas cost 35 cents and Gale Sayers won the NFLrushing title. The tracks are well beyond their expected lifespan, and call fora complete replacement. Because of the poor track condition, trains musttravel slower—meaning trips are longer. Without rehabilitation, rail servicewill become even slower and the cost for replacement will continue to grow.
How will this benefit Red Line riders?New tracks will reduce up to 20 minutes from the daily round-trip commutefor South Side riders. That amounts to nearly four days per year!
Additionally, the station improvements will enhance the customerexperience, and the new elevators at Garfield, 63rd, and 87th will makethose stations fully accessible.
The project has created hundreds of job opportunities, from constructiontrades to bus drivers and traffic control aides.
CTA’s five-month approach to the project will bring better and fasterservice—and modern trains and stations—nearly four years sooner than aweekends-only work schedule (the Red Line has the highest weekendridership of any line).
For more information…visit redlinesouth.com or call 1-888-YOUR-CTA (1-888-968-7282).
