Editorial
This is our first bilingual edition, after two years of circulation in Spanish. Fol-lowing requests from friends, co-workers, members of Chambers of Commerce, and the community in general, we have decided from this Edi-tion, to have our publication in Spanish and English.
The importance of inform-ing the Hispanic and Anglo-Saxon community on the lat-est advances in education is a challenge that drives us to be better each day, striving to achieve excellence.
In this edition you will find information about sum-mer camps, project Cpalms, @-learning, new standards in education, the 8th Symphony of Gustav Mahler, and much more. It is our greatest wish you enjoy this edition.
Esta es nuestra primera edición bilingüe luego de cumplir dos años de cir-culación en español. Aten-diendo las peticiones de ami-gos, compañeros de trabajo, miembros de las cámaras de comercio, y de la comunidad en general, hemos decidido a partir de esta edición, salir en español e inglés.
La importancia de mantener informada a la comunidad hispana y anglosajona sobre los últimos avances en edu-cación, es un reto que nos im-pulsa a ser cada día mejores, esforzándonos por alcanzar la excelencia. On Wednesday February 22nd, 2012, the Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools held a press conference in Signa-ture Grand, Davie-Florida, where he was introduced by the Hispanic Community, and he talked about some of the measures he pretends to im-plement in order to transform public edu-cation in the Broward County.
Robert W. Runcie was appointed Super-intendent on October 5th 2011. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Har-vard College and a MBA from Northwest-ern University Kellogg School of Manage-ment. He comes from his former job as chief of Staff to the Board of Education, Chicago Public Schools.
The event was hosted by the Hispanic com-munity of Broward County, and received several personalities and members of orga-nizations like Hispanic Unity, Sistema Uni-versitario Ana G. Ménez, Mujeres Latinas, Americas Community Center, and Vene-zuelan-American Chamber of commerce, among others.
El miércoles 22 de Febrero de 2012, el su-perintendente de “Broward County Public Schools” ofreció una conferencia de prensa en el “Signature Grand” en Davie-Florida, donde fue presentado por la Comunidad Hispana y habló, acerca de algunas de las
medidas que pre-tende implemen-tar, para transfor-mar la educación pública en el condado.
Robert W. Run-cie fue nomb-rado superinten-dente el pasado 5 de Octubre de
2011. Tiene un título de “Bachelor´s” en economía de “Harvard College”, y un MBA de “Northwestern University Kel-logg School of Management”. En su úl-timo trabajo se desempeño como “Chief of Staff” de la junta de educación de “Chi-cago Public Schools”.
El evento fue organizado por la comuni-dad Hispana del condado de Broward, al cual asistieron distintas personalidades y miembros de organizaciones como: His-panic Unity, El Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez, Mujeres Latinas, “Americas Community Center” y la Cámara Venezo-lana-Americana de Comercio, entre otras.

R A new language for children. Un nuevo idioma para los niños.
In this wonderful country, where multicul-turalism is one of its assets, we must ask ourselves: how prepared are teachers to re-ceive a child from another culture or language? The consid-eration of ESOL pro-grams is declining in the edu-c a t i o n a l budget, and at preschool level these are not even contem-plated. The teachers in the classroom are the ones who must face this difficult challenge. The education of teachers as to the process of adaptation and development of the language in a child will bring to it an atmosphere of security and understanding of the process as such. When a child moves to another country the concept of what is left behind and the necessity to deal with what comes, is not something that their level of concrete think-ing, can internalize as an adult. Observing the eyes of a child who speaks another language, trying to understand or “catch” a word that indicates he understands, and relate this to a normal process of language acquisition, will sensitize the teacher, thus helping the child to evolve, from his body language up to academic expectations to enable the adaptation to the new country. Being a teacher is the vocation of bringing every day all previous experiences from her childhood; and with educational train-ing, offering the child the tools to make his development optimal.
En este país maravilloso, en donde la mul-ticulturalidad es una de sus riquezas, debe-
mos preguntarnos ¿cuán preparados están los
maestros para reci-bir un niño de otra
cultura o idi-oma? Los pro-gramas ESOL son cada vez menos consi derados en el presupuesto educativo, y a
nivel preesco-lar no se con-
templan. Son las maestras de aula las
que deben afrontar tan difícil reto.
Sensibilizar a las maestras en cuanto al proceso de adaptación y desarrollo del lenguaje en un niño, aportará, al mismo un ambiente de seguridad y entendimiento del proceso como tal.Cuando un niño se muda a otro país el con-cepto de lo que se deja atrás y afrontar lo que viene, no es algo que su nivel de pen samiento concreto, pueda interiorizar como un adulto. Observar los ojos de un niño que habla otra lengua, intentando entender o “atrapar” alguna palabra que de indicios de su comprensión, y relacionar esto con un proceso normal de adquisición de len-guaje, sensibilizará al maestro, ayudando a la evolución del niño, desde su lenguaje permitiendo la adaptación al nuevo país. Ser maestra es la vocación de traer al día a día todas las experiencias previas desde su niñez, y con la formación educativa, o- frecerle al niño las herramientas para que su desarrollo sea óptimo.

To obtain a certificate for teaching English is easier and more accessible than you would think both for native speakers, as well as non-natives with an ad-vanced domain level.
Basically, the applicant must complete a course where you will learn the essential teaching tools and consolidate your knowl-edge of grammar in English.
At the end of the course, you must present a test to check the level of acquired knowl-edge. Most importantly is to choose the in-stitution through which certify and identify the type of student to teach in order to de-termine the class of certificate.
The most recognized institutions in the Unit-ed States that offer these cer-t i f ica t ions are TESOL ( Te a c h i n g English to Speakers of Other Languages) and British Council that TESOL is registered in AC-CET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training) in the States. Brit-ish Council, is backed by Cambridge Uni-versity, which is registered in the European educational system.
Due to the increasing demand for these cer-tificates, there are institutions that provide courses face-to-face, as well as online.
To obtain a certificate for teaching English, not only open you the doors to join educa-tional formal institutions, providing greater opportunity to growth in the field of educa-tion, but also, will offer confidence to your students on your teaching skills.

Obtener un certificado para la enseñanza del inglés es más fácil y accesible de lo que uno pensaría tanto para los angloparlantes nativos, como para los no nativos con un nivel de dominio avanzado.
Básicamente, el solicitante debe completar un curso donde aprenderá las herramien-tas didácticas esenciales y consolidará sus conocimientos de gramática en inglés.
Al culminar el curso, debe presentar una prueba para verificar el nivel de cono-cimiento adquirido.Lo más importante, es elegir la institución a través de la cual certi-ficarse e identificar al tipo de estudiantes a quienes se les va a enseñar para determinar la clase de certificado.

On March 1st the registrations for this pro-gram for 2012-2013 school year was initi-ated. These scholarships are offered by the non-for-profit organization: Step Up For Students. Since its foundation, this orga-nization has fought to help students from low income families get the quality educa-tion they deserve. These scholarships, are different from others, because they are not bound by the performance of the student, instead they are offered as another option for families, like public education. The eligibility for this program depends on the monthly income of the family and the num-ber of people that integrate it.
El primero de Marzo inició el plazo para la inscripción en este programa, para el año 2012-2013. Las becas son otorgadas por la organización sin fines de lucro: “Step Up For Students”. Desde sus inicios, esta or-ganización ha luchado por ayudar a los ni-ños de familias de bajos recursos a obtener la educación que se merecen. Estas becas, a diferencia de la mayoría, no están atadas al rendimiento del estudiante, más bien son presentadas como una opción en la misma manera que la educación pública. La elegi-bilidad para el programa depende del in-greso mensual de la familia y el número de personas que la integran.

Dudamel , quien acaba de recibir el premio Grammy a la mejor interpre-tación orquestal, por dirigir a la Filar-mónica de Los Ángeles en la Cuarta Sinfonía de Brahms, dirigió un conci-erto que no será olvidado por quienes asistieron, al Teatro Teresa Carreño de Caracas el 18 de Febrero de 2012.
Al dirigir a la Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, la Filarmónica de Los Ángeles y el Coro Sinfónico Juvenil de Venezuela integrado por distintos coros sinfónicos, que sumaron 1000 voces más 400 músicos en escena, la obra de Gustav Mahler cobro vida, cuando este joven director dirigió la Sinfonía No8, la “Sinfonía de Los Mil”.
Alrededor de 300 niños integrantes del coro, entre 7 y 12 años, conmovieron a los integrantes de las orquestas y a la audiencia, al dar muestra de disciplina, amor, respeto y profesionalismo. A su corta edad, interpretaron en alemán, esta obra que habla del perdón. Luego de casi dos meses de ensayos diarios, y al ser seleccionados, estos niños fueron protagonistas de una presentación ma-gistral.
El ciclo de conciertos llamado “con-ciertos por la paz” concluyo con una ovación de pie que duro unos 12 minu-tos, los aplausos y gritos de “bravo” cerraron con éxito, el ciclo de Gustav Mahler.

Bajo la dirección musical de Gustavo Dudamel la 8ª Sinfonía de Mahler tomo vida y llenó de emoción el Teatro Teresa Carreño de Caracas.
El Director de orquesta Gustavo Dudamel, un venezolano de 30 años, quien con su apa-sionada manera de dirigir, ha conquistado audiencias de todas partes del mundo, es el actual director musical de la Filarmónica de los Ángeles y de la Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela.

“The Symphony of the thousand” of Gustav Mahler, Captured Venezuelans
Under the musical direction of Gustavo Dudamel, Mahler’s 8th Symphony Mahler took life and filled with emotions the Teresa Carreño
Theatre in Caracas.Director Gustavo Dudamel, a 30 year old Venezuelan, who with his passionate way of di-recting, has captured audiences from all parts of the world, is the current musical director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony of Venezuela and los Angeles Philharmonic.
Dudamel, who has just received the Grammy Award for best orchestral per-formance, for leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Brahms’s fourth Sym-phony, conducted a concert that will not be forgotten by those attending the Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas on February 18, 2012.
Directing the Simón Bolívar Sym-phony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philhar-monic and the youth symphonic choir of Venezuela, integrated by different symphonic choirs adding up to 1000 voices and 400 musicians on stage, the work of Gustav Mahler took life, when this young director, performed Symphony # 8, the “Symphony of the thousand”.
Around 300 children members of the choir, between 7 and 12 years, moved the members of the orchestras and the audience, giving an example of discipline, love, respect, and profe ssionalism. At their young age, they performed in German this work which talks about forgiveness. After nearly two months of daily trials and being selected, these children were the main characters of a masterful presentation.
The series of concerts called “concert for peace”, concluded with a standing ovation that lasted about 12 minutes, the applause and shouts of “bravo” closed successfully, the cycle of Gus-

Camp Sagemont has full day programs for children from PK3 to 8th grade, and was voted Best Summer Camp in Weston by our City of Weston’s Best of Weston. Children attending Camp Sagemont will have a great time while learning valuable lessons, and will stay active while performing activities which include: Arts and crafts, computers, cooking, dance, drama, field trips, karate, music, science, sports, swimming, special events and more.
Camp Sagemont also offers their children special camps like Art Camp, Science Camp, Glee Camp, CSI Camp, Stomp It Band Camp, Adventure Camp, Sports Camp, Travel Camp, as well as summer school and ESL Program.
The entire camp program has a 9 week duration starting June 6th 2012 and end-ing August 10th 2012. Parents can choose to enroll their children weekly or they can choose between 2-weeks and 4-weeks packages.
Camp Sagemon is an excellent opportunity for children to learn, have fun and stay a- ctive during summer vacation. A summer at Camp Sagemont can give your child great experiences that will stay with him forever.
El “Camp Sagemont” tiene programas de todo el día para niños desde PK3 hasta 8vo grado, y ha sido elegido como Mejor cam-pamento de verano en Weston, por los pre-mios “Best of Weston” presentados por la revista “Our City Weston”. Los niños que asisten al campamento de Sagemont pa- sarán un rato divertido mientras aprenden valiosas lecciones, y se mantendrán activos mientras participan en actividades que in-cluyen: Arte y manualidades, computado-ras, cocina, baile, teatro, paseos, karate, música, ciencia, deportes, natación, even-tos especiales y más.
El “Camp Sagemont” también ofrece a sus niños campamentos especiales como Cam-pamento de Arte, de ciencia, campamento “Glee”, campamento CSI, campamento “Stomp It band”, campamento de aventura, de deportes, de viajes, así cómo escuela de verano y programas ESL.
El campamento completo tiene una dura-ción de 9 semanas, que comienzan el 6 de Junio y terminan el 10 de Agosto de 2012. Los padres pueden escoger inscribir a sus hijos semanalmente o elegir entre paquetes de 2 semanas y paquetes de 4 semanas.
El campamento Sagemont es una oportuni-dad excelente para que los niños aprendan, se diviertan y se mantengan activos durante las vacaciones de verano. Un verano en “Camp Sagemont” puede darle a su hijo grandes experiencias que permanecerán con él el resto de su vida.

El día comienza a las 8 de la ma-ñana con el servicio de cuidado gratuito an-tes del campamento (before-care). En esta primera hora, los padres pueden hablar con las profesoras y consejeras sobre sus niños. También pueden hablar con el personal administrativo sobre asuntos tales como almuerzos, paseos, camisetas, etc. Los ni-ños llegan a jugar y a ver películas en el idioma de aprendizaje. De 9 de la mañana al medio día tienen tres actividades en las que cada grupo rota cada hora. Las activi-dades son clases del idioma de aprendizaje, laboratorio en el mismo idioma donde los niños pueden utilizar lo que aprendieron en la clase de una forma interactiva en grupos o con parejas y, por último, tienen deportes que varían cada día entre beisbol, fútbol, futbol americano, voleibol, balon-cesto, kickball,juegos de agua, yoga, entre otros. Durante las clases y el laboratorio los niños aprenden vocabulario, gramáti-
ca, conversación y cultura y otros aspec-tos del país de estudio de la semana en el idioma de aprendizaje. Reciben un libro según su nivel y edad. A las 12 los niños tienen una hora de almuerzo y recreo. En la tarde comienzan las actividades de arte que también son en el idioma de aprendizaje. Estas actividades incluyen: arte y manuali-dades, cocina, joyería, pintura, esculturas, aprender sobre artistas, cerámica, teatro, canto, baile, coreografía, etc. Los miércoles tenemos paseos (Kabooms, C.B. Smith Wa-ter Park, T.Y. Water Park, Markham Park, juego de los Marlins, cine, Monkey Joes, museos, Flamingo Gardens, Everglades Tour, etc). Los paseos están incluidos en el costo del programa. Los viernes tenemos fi-estas, piñatas, wáter soccer, invitados espe-ciales y mucho más. Al final de cada sesión, tenemos una presentación para los padres. Los niños aprenden una canción, baile o representación teatral para la presentación.

The day starts at 8:00AM with our FREE before camp care. During this hour, parents can talk to the teachers and counselors regarding curriculum, progress, approach, etc., as well as with the adminis-trators regarding lunch, field trips, t-shirts... Meanwhile, the children play and watch videos occasionally in their language of study. From 9:00AM until noon, each group participates in different activities, rotating each hour. The activities consist of language lessons, language lab that allows children to practice what they have learned in class, and sports, including basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, kickball, flag football, softball, volleyball, water games, yoga and gymnastics. During class and lab time, children learn vocabulary, grammar, conversational skills, reading and writing when applicable. They receive a textbook for the classes, chosen according to their level of proficiency and age. At noon, chil-
dren go to lunch and then, recess. In the afternoon, they actively engage in differ-ent arts activities, including dancing, sing-ing, dramatization, culture, international culinary arts, arts and crafts and age-ap-propriate educational games that promote language acquisition. On Wednesdays, we go on field trips (Kabooms, Wannado City, C.B. Smith Water Park, T.Y. Water Park, Markham Park, Marlins Games, the movies, Monkey Joes, Flamingo Gardens, museums, Everglades Tour, etc). Field trips are included in the cost of the program. On Fridays, we have piñata or disco par-ties, water soccer, special guests and much more. Every other week, on the last day of each session, children perform either a song, dance or theatre presentation for their parents. To prepare for the presentations in their language of study, they practice every day.

On 19 April 2012, “American Developing Smiles”, Broward Chapter, A.D.S, will of-fer an elegant lunch at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure (250 Racquet Club Road Weston Fl. 33326) from 11: 30 AM to 2 PM. There will be live music and a fashion show presented by the prestigious Venezu-elan designer Franco Montoro. They are expecting between 250 to 300 people to at-tend. The cost of the lunch will be $80 and the raised funds will be used to help sup-port the A.D.S. Center “Gustavito Garcia Lujan” in Caracas Venezuela. “The A.D.S.” organization was founded 15 years ago in the United States. It has economically sup-ported more than 600 children from this Center, providing them with food, educa-tion, medical care, and an integrated wel-fare.

El departamento de educación de los Estados Unidos asignó parte de los fondos del programa “Carrera hacia el tope” a la “Asociación para la Evaluación de la preparación para la Univer-sidad y Carreras” (PARCC), cuyo objetivo es la medición y evaluación de los estándares co-munes. Florida es miembro de esta asociación de 24 estados, cuya meta es incrementar el número de estudiantes que culminan “high school” con un nivel de preparación adecuado.
Los nuevos estándares mejorarán el rendimiento estudiantil? Según un estudio publicado en Fe-brero de 2012 por la Institución Brookings: “ How well are american students learning?”, la mejora de los estándares no guarda relación con logros o calificaciones de los estudiantes, ya que no se ha visto mejoría para todos los estados en los cuales se han aplicado estos estándares en las áreas de Inglés, y matemáticas entre 2003 y 2009. Tendremos que esperar para evaluar los resultados.

There is no proof of im-provement on the states which implemented the new standards between 2003 and 2009. We will have to wait to evaluate the results.

CPALMS is a state wide infrastructure project to build information systems and tools to support the implementation of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS). The project is led by the Florida Center for Research in Science, Techno- logy, Engineering and Mathematics (FCR-STEM) at Florida State University (FSU).CPALMS is collaboration between k-12 teachers, researchers, the Florida Depart-ment of Education, universities, district curriculum specialists, and many others.
The Standards Information System is the core of all components providing direct ac-cess and connection to the standards. By integrating these systems, CPALMS will:
- make the standards more practical by con-necting them to courses. Since teachers teach courses and student register in cour- ses, it is important that the course descrip-tions are aligned with the standards.- make standards more achievable by pro-viding high quality resources that are spe-cifically aligned or created for the NGSSS.- provide standards-based tools to create high quality courses, instructional resour- ces, planning and professional develop-ment.- serve as “one source” for all standards-based information by utilizing the latest technologies such as Web 2.0, web services and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This infrastructure will enable creating new standards-based tools and applications without the need to replicate the informa-tion systems within CPALMS.
CPALMS es un amplio proyecto de in-fraestructura del Estado de Florida para construir sistemas de información y he- rramientas para apoyar la aplicación de las normas “Next Generation Sunshine State Standards” (NGSSS). El proyecto es liderado por el Centro de Investigación de Florida en Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas (FCR-STEM) en la “Florida State University” (FSU).CPALMS se lleva a cabo con la colabo-ración de profesores de kindergarten hasta doceavo grado, investigadores, el Departa-mento de Educación de Florida, universi-dades, especialistas curriculares y muchos otros.

Esta infraestructura permitirá la creación de nuevas herramientas basadas en es-tándares y aplicaciones sin necesidad de replicar los sistemas de información dentro de CPALMS.
