Lightweight, high-strength riser systems, designed to take you deeper.

ven as offshore drilling operations go deeper, the depth capacity of jack-up rigs, semisubmersible rigs, and

drillships is often limited by the additional weight of longer riser strings. This reality has, at times, been a

limiting factor in the utilization of a wide range of offshore drilling vessels.

Lightweight, high strength aluminum alloy riser components and assemblies from Alcoa Oil and Gas help operators

meet the demands of deepwater drilling by reducing the weight of a riser system by as much as 60% and extending

drilling depths up to 40%. The unmatched strength-to-weight ratio of these riser systems ultimately results in

increased depth capacity, without sacrificing performance or safety.

For upgrading an existing rig for greater water depths, Alcoa aluminum alloy components are unmatched.

Equipment and maintenance costs can be significantly less expensive with an aluminum riser system, as compared

to a similar upgrade utilizing a steel riser system. In addition, the lighter weight of these aluminum subsea risers

makes them easier to deploy, handle, store, and clean.

Alcoa aluminum alloy riser system components

and assemblies are offered in virtually any size and

configuration to match with existing subsea drilling riser

designs, for either upgrade or new-build applications.

Critical components offered by Alcoa include:

• Industry-leadingextrudedaluminumalloytubing

up to 60’ in length and 30” in diameter

• High-pressurealuminumalloychokeandkilllines,

formed with unique, heavy and taper wall geometries

to maximize strength while minimizing weight

• Complexextrudedshapesforhighstrength-to-weight

structural components

High-performancecomponentsandassemblies, designed to reduce weight without sacrificing performance.

The new BOP factor: risers need to be lighter than ever.

Today’s offshore industry is in the process of

developing a new generation of BOP designs

built to deliver even greater shear power.

These BOPs will likely be equipped with an

additional ram stack to provide this higher level

of shearing force. The addition of another ram

stack will increase the weight of the BOP and

correspondingly, the load on the rig as it is

deployed by the riser string.

In order to compensate for the increased

weight of the BOP, many operators are now

considering the use of aluminum risers instead

of the heavier steel designs. Alcoa Oil and Gas is

poised to meet the growing demand for strong,

lightweight riser systems by providing proven

aluminum components and assemblies which

combine advanced materials and designs.

Easily retrofit choke and kill lines to your existing riser system.

Whether retrofitted to an existing riser string or part

of a new riser system, Alcoa Oil and Gas aluminum

alloy choke and kill lines offer a number of key benefits:

high strength, light weight, and corrosion-resistance.

In addition to reducing overall riser weight and extending

drilling depths, aluminum choke and kill lines offer

many distinct advantages:

• Enableseasierdeployment,storage,andcleaning

of risers

• Allowsforreuseofexistingbuoyancymaterials,

with little or no modification needed

• Providesforareductioninbuoyancymaterials,

resulting in reduced initial investment and long-term

maintenance costs

• Involvesonlyminimalimpactontherigitselfandvery

little downtime, as only choke and kill lines are replaced

• Easilyretrofittedduringroutinemaintenancecycles

The Alcoa Connection.Alcoa Oil and Gas, a division of Alcoa, produces lightweight, high-strength aluminum alloy drill pipe

in 4-1/2", 5", 5-1/2", 5-7/8", and 6-5/8" diameters. In addition, Alcoa Oil and Gas manufactures subsea

riser components and assemblies, casing, core barrels and downhole tubular products, conveying pipe,

extruded tubing and shapes, and offers large-scale, closed-die forging capabilities.

Alcoa is the world’s leading producer of primary and fabricated aluminum, as well as the world’s

largest miner of bauxite and refiner of alumina. In addition to inventing the aluminum industry,

Alcoa innovation has been behind major milestones in the aerospace, automotive, packaging,

building and construction, commercial transportation, consumer electronics and industrial markets

over the past 120 years.

Evidence of this innovative mindset lives within the Alcoa Technical Center, the world’s largest light

metals lab. Here, Alcoa Oil and Gas can access the talents of some of the industry’s leading scientists

and researchers and offer its clients a full range of solutions from concept to completion.
