A message from the Principal

Welcome to our Week 7 newsletter.

This week the teaching staff met in their stage teams to evaluate their teaching practice and learn from the feedback of their peers. The lesson studies are an integral part of our professional learning as the teachers receive constructive feedback on aspects of their teaching practice as well as observing colleagues teaching. This is a very powerful learning experience for all involved. Teaching teams also used this collaborative time to plan and program together, ensuring consistency between classrooms and teachers in their delivery of curriculum.

Yesterday, Wednesday 20 students represented Albury Public School at the Riverina swimming carnival, held at Albury Swim Centre. Thank you to our staff coaches/supervisors, Mr Takle and Miss Milham for accompanying the team. Albury Public School had some great successes with the following students qualifying for the State carnival in Sydney: Lara Collins, Lachie O’Leary, Lucas Williams, Levi Smith, Seamus Bready, Charlie Murphy, Oliver Ayton, Bastion Hitchon, Fin Bready. Other students may have also qualified but final results are not known yet.

Next Thursday 21 March the Albury Public School athletics carnival will be held at The Les O'Brien Athletics Precinct at Alexandra Park. Students are to come to school as usual in the morning and will be accompanied by their teachers to the carnival,

by bus. All students in Years 3 – 6 are expected to attend the carnival. Students in Year 2, who are 8 this year, may attend the carnival if they are intending to participate in either track events or any field event finals. Last week students participated in trials for field events and catch up trials are being held this week.

The successful students, who will compete in the finals at the athletics carnival will be notified next week prior to the athletics carnival. Thank you to all of the parents who have offered to volunteer at the carnival, more information for volunteers will come home with your child next week. A reminder to all parents, carers and visitors attending the carnival to watch their children compete, that only staff and volunteers are to be inside the track area. For the safety of competitors and spectators we ask that all spectators remain on the outside of the track at all times.

Parents/carers are reminded that next Friday, 22 March is a half day public holiday, including Albury Public School. All students are expected to leave, or be picked up from, the school at 12:00pm. Please assist us by making arrangements for your child from 12:00pm.

22 March Half Day

A message from the Principal cont ..

Next week we are celebrating Harmony day on Friday 22 March. All students should have received a special order form for canteen orders on the day. These need to be returned to the canteen as soon as possible to secure some of the specially planned food, such as butter chicken and rice. All students are encouraged to wear orange as a symbol of the meaning of Harmony Day or a traditional dress.

Students Travelling Safely on Buses: On Monday morning Mr Weaven spoke with all the students in our school who travel on a bus either to or from school, or both. Students were spoken to about the appropriate behaviour for travelling on the bus as, unfortunately, there have been a number of reported incidents of concerning and unsafe bus behaviour in the last few weeks. We went through the Guidelines for Managing School Student Behaviour on Buses, which is followed by all bus operators as part of Transport for NSW. Can I please ask that parents/carers speak to their child about the importance of behaving correctly while travelling on buses. For further information, please visit:

Coffee and cake will be held on Wednesday 27 March from 10:00am. The agenda for this term’s meeting is: PBL information update and voting on our new school values; The Learning and Support Team – supporting your child at school A “how to” support your child to read, become numerate, spell, at home, including home reading for the K – 2 students and maths games to play at home, for students in K – 6 who might need a boost to grasp concepts.

Studies have shown that there are more benefits for both adult and child that come with reading than just building a bond – particularly when it comes to education. Much of the research done has focused on the early years, and how the literacy environment helps to develop emergent literacy skills. For example, shared book reading early on stimulates language and reading development. However, Emma Vardy, a research associate in the psychology of education at Coventry University, UK, said the home literacy environment doesn’t stop being important once children have learnt to read. “The opportunities that a child has to read at the home, and parental beliefs and behaviours, continue to impact on children’s reading throughout the school years,” Vardy wrote in an article published by The Conversation. Below, she shares five ways that reading with children can help their general education. It opens up new worlds It can build confidence It can build positive reading attitudes It expands their language It can help their speech and language awareness You don’t need a lot of money, or even hours of spare time to read with children. Even small efforts can have big benefits. Nor does it have to be just at bedtime. Sharing a book, a magazine or a comic can take place any time of the day. The most important thing to remember is to have fun. Interest in reading emerges from enjoying it with a parent. If you’re interested and make an effort, it can have a huge impact on a child’s engagement with reading. A full copy of this article will be available at Coffee and Cake. eSafety advice on the Momo Challenge: Unfortunately, many of our older students have been discussing and trying to access the concerning Momo Challenge at school or at home. Our school internet firewalls and security settings make it possible for us to limit access but not completely eliminate it but awareness and supervision at home is vital as it is very distressing when young people have been exposed to any content that scares them or plays on their emotions, like those reported in the Momo Challenge. Although it has been widely reported and exposed as a viral hoax, the Momo Challenge is not the first, nor will it be the last, online challenge or phenomenon to target our children with potentially harmful consequences. The Australian Government has provided the following advice to encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps your children are using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online. Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online: Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re

age-appropriate Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to Let them know not everything they see online is real or true. Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps. Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online, and contact Kids Helpline if

they need further support.

Isla Dixon 3/4CF raised over $1600 for “Shave for a Cure’. This was raised online plus from her

family and friends. Anyone still wishing to donate to Isla may do so using the donation box

located at the front office, which will be there until Friday. Well done Isla.

Library News

Premier’s Reading Challenge:

The Challenge is an excellent program that aims to encourage a love of

reading by experiencing quality literature. It is not a competition but a

challenge for each student to read widely.

Any student from Kindergarten to Year 6 is able to participate. Children have to read a set

number of books from a reading list. (K-2 students need to read 30 books. Children 3-6 need to

read 20 books.) Please refer to the website for the complete rules and reading lists. Alternatively

see Ms Griffith in the library.

If students are interested in completing the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) they can

start reading now. The Challenge runs from 4 March to August.

Children log onto the website by using their department User name (firstname.lastname) and

password. They use this one at school to access computers. The act of entering titles online

registers the individual as participating in the Challenge. There are

printed copies of the log available from the library. The NSW Premier’s

Reading Challenge website is:

Soccer Trials

Following extensive trials here at school last week, the following 12 students were selected to

represent our school at the Albury PSSA Zone Football trials held on Monday:

Mitchel Spokes, Ryan Kemp, Archie Drummond, Oliver Mack, Lenny Koller,

P.J. Buakaeo, Ethan Haberfield, David Green, Charlotte Laird, Rylee Steele,

Mia Sheather and Isla Smith. Congratulations and good luck to these students

as they pursue selection in the Zone and Riverina teams.

Six Albury Public School boys represented the school at the Albury PSSA Cricket

trials in Week 3 at Billson Park. Samuel O’Leary, Oliver Mack, Ethan Haberfield,

Lenny Koller, Ryan Kemp and Oliver Ayton all showed great commitment and

skill throughout the day and should be commended on their efforts. Oliver Mack

and Ethan Haberfield were successful in making the Albury PSSA squad to

attend the Riverina trials in Deniliquin. Unfortunately these boys came up against

some extremely skilled students and were unsuccessful in progressing further but should be

proud of their efforts.

P&C Canteen News

WOWSERS, This first term is flying!!

We have had some wonderful helpers in the canteen over the last few weeks, it is great getting to know some new faces and catching up with regular helpers!! Thank you for supporting and helping us get out the lunches on time!! Every day it is very hectic trying to get out 100 plus orders in a 1.5 hours!!

But thanks to the excellent helpers we have we always get the job done!!

The canteen captain roster is up and running and we have had some very helpful year 6 children help us serve at lunch and recess as well as other food preparation jobs that we have (popping popcorn, making frozen milk cups etc!!) Thank you to these children, it is much appreciated!!

This weeks special will be Honey Soy Chicken and Rice $1.00

Harmony day is Friday 22 March and we have a special menu on offer. Order online via quickcliq or at the canteen by Monday 18 March.

Election Day Barbecue and Cake Stall

Can you bake a cake or sizzle a snag to help your school?

We are seeking volunteers and donations of baked goods for a cake stall and barbecue at our

school during voting in the NSW State election, which is on Saturday 23rd March, from 8am-6pm.

Cakes must have the ingredients listed and can be donated directly to the stall at school on

Saturday morning from 7.30am.

If you can volunteer for a shift on the barbecue, please contact KAM mum Amber McSwiney at

ambermcswiney@yahoo.com.au or 0423 042498.

The barbecue and cake stall will start at 8am and end when we run out.

Money raised will be used for Literacy for Kids.

Please come and support on the day and help if you can!

Issue 2

Due date for Issue 2 - 2019 is Friday 22 March 2019.

If you are paying using cash, correct money should be sent to school in an envelope with your

order clearly named and placed in the Book Club box on the counter at the Front Office.

You are also able to order online by following the instructions on the back of the Book club

magazine.

2019 Ride2School Day: Friday 22 March (1/2 day public holiday)

Riding or using another form of “Active Travel” to get to school, is great for students’ wellbeing,

fitness and independence. Ride2School Day is an opportunity for students and their parents/

carers to experience these benefits. This year’s event falls on the

Gold Cup half-day public holiday. Once again we will have “bike-

trains” operating from different parts of Albury. These will be led by

teachers. We encourage parents to ride along too, especially if

your child has limited experience riding to school. The “bike-trains”

will not run in the afternoon. More details about the “bike-trains” will

be in next week’s newsletter. We encourage parents to begin

planning and practising safe routes to school and talking to their

children about bike safety.
