Alberta’s growing and dynamic defence sector is highly regarded for its capabilities. The defence industry in Alberta has strengths in three key sub-sectors:

• RoboticsandUnmannedVehicleSystems• DefenceElectronics• LogisticSupporttotheMilitary

Robotics and Unmanned Vehicle Systems (UVS)

Alberta is home to companies with expertise in various facets of UVS development, with especially strong skills in avionics navigation systems, control systems, global positioning systems, systems integration and wireless communications. The strategic importance of this area continues to grow as technology advances beyond military use and into civilian, commercial and industrial applications.

Defence Electronics

Alberta companies play a key role in manufacturing products to the global market and maintaining components of Canadian Forces’ communications systems, software, specialized sensors and other electronic components used in military applications.

Logistic Support to the Military

(A) 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton is where the headquarters for the 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force West are located;

(B) CFB Cold Lake is the Canadian premier fighter training facility and home to the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) and the Canadian Flight Test Centre (CFTC);

(C) CFB Suffield is one of the largest military training areas in the worldandhometotheDefenceResearchandDevelopmentCanada(DRDC);and

Panvion is an Alberta-based geomatics and airborne sensor company that has in the past 10 years focused exclusively on designing and manufacturing one-of-a-kind sensors that provide wide area coverage, while maintaining high resolution and geo-location accuracies. Its Alberta scientists and engineers create products for the remote sensing and surveillance market. The sensors can be used for geophysical surveys, photogrammetric and dense stereo models, and remote sensing. A version also exists for operational airborne surveillance missions and situation awareness with cross-cueing to other sensors. Airborne platform can range from medium sized UAV to high-altitude manned aircraft.

Panvion has flown in the U.S. and Canada and tested half a dozen sensors of its own design ranging from near-infrared, thermal and visible to multi-spectral using focal plane and linear arrays. Panvion also has other airborne related technologies that derive from work done on medium altitude UAVs incorporating detection and geo-location methods for optical ground motion tracking systems. Panvion holds a number of patents in the surveillance and optical flow navigation technologies.

A recent example of Panvion’s work is the G7, an ultra-large format multispectral, stereo and photogrammetric camera in the hundred-gigapixel range which received assistance from Alberta’s Tecterra Geomatics agency. It was designed to change the aerial surveying companies’ productivity and cost challenges.

The Western Canadian Defence Industries Association (WCDIA) is a not-for-profit organization formed in 2009 to benefit Western Canada’s aerospace, defence and security companies.

Built to encourage, support and promote small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs)asviablesuppliersfordefenceprocurementinitiatives,the Association assists members with overcoming obstacles or roadblocks they may encounter in the process. WCDIA provides a forum for collaboration and cooperation between the Primes, those in the defence andsecurityindustries,anditsmembers.Regularnetworkingevents,information sessions and presentations give members an opportunity to discuss current issues and share experiences on how to become a supplier in the industry. Exposure at these events, including WCDIA’s premier event WESTDEF, provide unprecedented access to government agencies and those companies that hold major industry contracts.

WESTDEF is Canada’s third largest defence conference in Canada and ishostedbytheWCDIA.Thetwo-dayconferenceattractsSMEs,majorsuppliers and various government agencies. It is held every July in Calgary, Alberta, and provides attendees with an excellent forum to interact, participate in informative sessions from those with the industry expertise, and connect with key industry players during one-on-one meetings (B2Bs).
