A Special Thanks to Our Diamond & Platinum Members!

Scott PiersonWood Castle Furniture2017-2018 Board Chair

Buy Local – Buy in PersonWe have all observed the power of the internet for buying and selling products. Ebay and Amazon continue to change the world of commerce and the landscape of our local malls. The attraction of unlimited selections, global inventories, competitive pricing, and sometimes free and immediate shipping have driven many businesses to drastically change their business models. Credit cards, Paypal and Bitcoin have transferred billions of dollars to every corner of the Earth. I often wonder if people really understand the potential negative impact that their internet purchase decisions could have on our local businesses and local economy.

Buying local and in person keeps the money in our community. For many, Wood Castle is just like your business. We are a value add manufacturer that takes local employees (craftsman) to convert local natural resources (woods) into phenomenal traded sector products (furniture). Many years ago, we changed our purchase decisions to support local businesses. We decided that we were willing to forgo “low price leader” campaigns and possibly pay slightly more for a product to keep the money in our community. Reasonable prices and reasonable margins means the company is there to support you in the future and you don’t have to start a new relationship over from scratch. For us, it wasn’t enough to just buy from Oregon or the Willamette Valley, we moved a lot of our purchases to Albany area based businesses.

Buying local and in person supports the families you see at Little League games, in church on Sunday and in line at the grocery store. We are not just producers and consumers. We are all in the relationship business. The relationships we all maintain with our vendors and customers has to count for something. We’ve all seen the aggressive marketing campaigns that “buy” your business with introductory low prices and then gradually inch them up to a higher price than you paid before. Usually, poor customer support accompanies that low price. We’ve also seen purchasers that only want the lowest price, and in some cases, are incentivized for negotiating the absolute lowest price. That style of purchasing changes with every purchase and is always looking for the next great deal. That model works great for the internet. It’s probably not the model each of us look for within each of our businesses. Buying local puts value in the person, and people, behind the sale.

Buying local and in person supports the local store of the corporate chain. I have a remote national account manager for a large retail chain store which has a local store in the Albany / Corvallis area. He calls me regularly with special offers and discounts that include next day shipping at no cost. He encourages me to order over the internet through their web site and I’ll receive the same account benefits I receive locally. My response is always the same. Thank you for the offer, but, I’ll be purchasing from the local store, that honors internet corporate pricing. If the product is not in stock, I’ll order from the in-store terminal which gives the credit to the local store. Many corporate models provide for internet sales with local pickup that actually negatively impacts the local store inventory and margin. I have known of stores that have closed because the internet purchase / in-store pickups were so significant that the store was no longer viable as a community retail operation. I will always choose to buy local and in person. If needed, I will order from their kiosk.

Buying local and in person makes us better people and better businesses. We all have the power to impact each person we meet in a positive and meaningful way. I love talking to our customers, partners and community members. Not only do I feel better when I have an opportunity to see them but I also have a chance to hear and learn from their experiences. How is the market treating them, what do they see coming in the next few months, and is there anything we could do to be a better partner are just a couple of my open ended questions. Sure an email or internet sale is great for the bottom line. But, we miss out on the personal contact and the opportunity to be a better person and a better business.

Buying local and in person stimulates a healthy community. There’s a reason we have all chosen to live in the Albany Area and its not the fast paced life of the large metropolitan areas. We all have placed a higher value on the balance of our work life with our family and community lives. Buying local stimulates all of the businesses around us. A healthy business environment supports a healthy community creating opportunities for healthy families. They are all tied together and without balance, something will inevitably fail.

Thank you

Personal Background: My wife Alicia and I have lived in Albany for the past 11 years. We have 3 daughters ages 12, 8, and 5 and a black rabbit named Vader. I have served as the general manager of Anytime Fitness for 7 years. I graduated from OSU with a degree in public health. My family and I are members of the LDS Church and we volunteer for Operation Underground Railroad, an organization that rescues children from sex slavery. We spend a lot of time with our girls – watching them play soccer, visiting the coast, enjoying movies together and eating too much good food at restaurants.

Business Marketing Niche: Our staff genuinely cares for the well being of each of our members. We know that effective exercise and proper nutrition can create healthier and happier people. Everything we offer aligns with our goal of helping the citizens of Albany get to a healthier place.

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: Overall, I think Albany is a great place to live. I can’t think of any one thing specific to Albany. However, I would say our biggest issue would be anything that contributes to the breakdown of families.

Chamber Involvement: We attend as many Greeters and Forum luncheons as possible and each year we have a booth at the Business Extravaganza.

Willamette Valley Cancer Institute is now open and seeing patients. They are located inside Corvallis Clinic’s Aumann Building. “There are clinical trials going on right now for all different types of cancer, from breast cancer to lymphoma and blood disorders,” said Dr. Wells. “Oncology has really blossomed, in terms of the number of drugs and treatment options available - not only as chemotherapy, but also non-toxic treatments as well.”

Patients receiving treatment through WVCI in Corvallis can access additional support through Project H.E.R., a program funded through The Corvallis Clinic Foundation that connects patients to local resources, including financial help, meal assistance and transportation.

WVCI is also a participant in the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Oncology Care Model (OCM), which aims to provide higher quality, more highly coordinated oncology care at the same or lower cost to Medicare. WVCI and other practices participating in the OCM are committed to providing enhanced services to Medicare beneficiaries, such as patient navigation and developing national treatment guidelines for care to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of cancer care.

Samaritan Practices What it Preaches, Earns Healthiest Employer Award for Fourth Time

Corvallis-based Samaritan Health Services created a comprehensive employee health and wellness plan that continues to show measurable results and was recently recognized as Oregon’s Healthiest Employer for the fourth time in the past five years.

At an Aug. 17 awards luncheon in Portland hosted by the Portland Business Journal, Samaritan was recognized in the category of employers with at least 1,500 workers.

The success of these efforts can be seen in the results of employees’ annual health screenings, which are conducted by an outside testing company. The 2016 results showed that: • 88 percent of at-risk employees improved their glucose levels; • 47 percent of at-risk employees improved their Body Mass Index (BMI); • 45 percent of at-risk employees improved their cholesterol levels; and • 29 percent of at-risk employees improved their blood pressure.
