Aug 25 2013: While I want to like this concept (full disclosure: I am an architect who pays

for my house and family by serving those 1%ers), I have a hard time seeing the practicalexecution of a fully functioning home with this system. Buildings and homes are more than

just a cheap shell. (In the talk, he glosses over details like windows, etc.) They are

integrated, complex systems that, quite frankly, need construction professionals involved to

execute safely and efficiently. The vast majority of homes are not currently designed by

architects anyway, so they don't really play a substantial role in the residential realm.

Knowing what goes into building a house, 90% of the means and methods for proper

foundations, storm and earthquake resistance, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems,

thermal and water-proofing systems are beyond what the do-it-yourself open source builder

can accomplish.

Aug 29 2013: Stephen, while I agree with the stance that 90% of the means and

methods for what we consider traditional modern housing is not obtainable by the

do-it-yourself-er, you are missing the point of what Alastair is proposing.

As he stated in the talk, the vast majority of housing needs comes not from the 1% of people who have a house built for them, but from developing and 3rd world countries

where regardless of means and methods, people are constructing their own homes

anyway. Look at the farvela's of Brazil, or the shanty towns of Africa. These towns

are made of of plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic, and cardboard boxes.

They don't have proper sanitation, water supply's or electricity.

As he stated, these towns are mostly found in developing nations with an unequal

distribution of wealth. As of 2005, one billion people, one-seventh of the world's

population, lived in such areas and that number is growing rapidly.

What Alastair is proposing is trying to bring a better solution to the masses, to the100%, those who can't afford or do not have access to 'good' design.

Jul 13 2013: Very interesting concept for building things. One of the hurdles that I see is,

while a lot of folks have the ability to design and even strength/know-how to build a house,

the CNC machine and making sure a structure is up to code seems like they would be the

largest road-blocks.

Maybe a business idea for those that are more savvy in such things, would be to developsmall businesses where builds could be printed and picked-up for or delivered to the build

site. Even a Mobile CNC printer and print on the build site so that lumber only has to be

moved to the site once and thus minimizing fuel consumption. Also not everyone needs a

CNC machine and local or mobile CNC printer could be more easily and cheaper to

maintain.

Thank you for this talk, it sparks many ideas.

Jun 24 2013: yea i think anyone can build a house if they have materials... look at the slums

in rio de janeiro they make there houses out of garbage or even people on the african plains

they make it out of sticks and mud (people have been building houses for 500,000 years).

the problem is not that they dont have hosues or know how to make a house the problem is

lack of healthy food, lack of food in general, drugs, violence lack of jobs, air quality, water

quality, gabage removal, sewage, medical drugs, and the fact that the government ignores

the poor. what about the terain there is not always flat terrain to build on or for that matter

even space, what about the problem of urban spral?? yea you can build a poor guy a house

but if he has to walk 20 km to get to the city or to get to his job what good does it do? hecant buy food! or medical supplies!

Having just down loaded the sketchup design of the described shelter, my first thought was'how much time is this going to take to cut out? At my hourly shop rate I have to charge to

Jun 12 2013: There is much to be said for open source home design and alternative

construction methods. But Parvin's example is obviously more of a concept than a practical

solution. As a commercial construction superintendent, I immediately started thinking about

how much waist plywood a building like that would generate. Multiply the sheets of

plywood by $25.00 a sheet and a 2x4 traditional frame house becomes very cost effective by

comparison.

Maybe there is reason most houses (including manufactured homes) have been built with

the same basic structure for over 100 years.

Also, keep in mind that the shell of any house is roughly 1/3 of the total cost of the house.

So even if you do save money on the shell, the rest of the house would need innovation as

well.

I hope Parvin does expand his network and they continue finding new ways of constructing

buildings. It will be tough to beat a tried and true system like we have now, but who would

have guessed in the late 1800's that the horse drawn wagon would soon be a thing of the

past.

Samantha Wolford

Jun 12 2013: Theoretically though, couldn't the builder just recycle the waste

plywood? It could end up going into a number of things like garden mulch, paper, or

even particle board.

Jun 15 2013: Here is an excerpt from the Georgia Pacific Plywood MSDS

(Material Safety Data Sheet) "Some lumber products may be sprayed with sap

stain control coatings. The lumber is air or kiln dried. No chemical residue is

left on the surface of the board. Wood products are bonded with phenol, phenol

resorcinol, melamine formaldehyde-based, or polyvinyl acetate resin. Some

wood products may be coated with finishes, sealants and or overlays."

Do you really want that as a much for your veggies?

Sure you could recycle waist material and they may even be able to come up

with designs which have very little waist.

Even if you had a design which used 100% of a sheet of plywood, I just don't

see how you could make it cost effective.

Plywood is processed much more than a standard 2x4 and is therefore more

expensive. Parvin's goal is to make something that a common man can do at

home for the same or less. For that, he needs a material that is comparable in

price to standard construction.

Jun 12 2013: This is a techy boys' solution to the problems Alastair outlines so well. His

solution, Wikihouse, ignores the social, economic, political and geographic problems. It

ignores the real barriers to housing for the 99%. It ignores the fact that only 30% of the

world's population have ready access to the internet. It ignores the fact that access to land

and resources is the problem, not that people can't work out how to put four walls and a roof

up. It ignores the great wealth of skills already inherent in communities. Wikihouse is thewrong template for an open source resource for the 99%. Wikhouse comes across as a very

slick marketing campaign designed to be run through the social media channels and

designed to draw attention to Alastair Parvin's own practice in the UK. Certainly not an

altruistic gesture and certainly not a sophisticated enough platform to accommodate the

complexity of the problem.

Jun 11 2013: Very inspiring talk! Actually, this is the topic I've been thinking about recently.

Recently, my university repainted my dormitory building, and it's now all bleak white! :(

This makes me think that the design thing which belongs to the field of architecture is

controlled and decided by few. While we students, as actual users of the building, don't have

the opportunity to design the building as we like--even just as simple as choosing the paint

color. They could have made the building more colorful and enjoyable to see. People seem

to have internalized the idea that architecture and big design project, like repainting the

building are the business of the "professionals". So I really like the idea presented in this

talk by Alastair Parvin. It would be good if we can design our own buildings using a 3D

printer.

millions of small houses may conduct to uncontrolled urban sprawl.

I would advocate for a slightly different strategy : get skilled engineers / architects to build a

robust & empty multi-story building, allocate open spaces to users then let them build their

private space in an open-source way. This may sound less exciting (and closer to what is

being done today) but might be more realistic at the large scale.

Jun 10 2013: What he came with was an open source design for CNC machine to build a

simple prefab house. It's a change in modular housing. I really don't see prefab yet a large

part of the advantage is they tend to be a little tighter in insulating so forth. Still not for the

laymen so much rare enthusiast. I would still try to mix this with traditional building

methods. You really don't run stories on open source housing so much.

Jun 9 2013: I think it's vital to highlight the point made by Alastair that this is a small

solution to a big problem. The best thing they can probably do is to define in an absolute

way where they see this solution working best. There is no universal solution to a universal

problem.

My greatest concern with these answers to the 'housing problem' is that you invariably see a

solution that looks remarkably like a single house that fits into a single plot. This idea is the

flawed idea. It is unlikely that the multiplicity of design options will respond to the need of a

multi-house plot, that may incorporate more than one level. Looking at the context of the

'housing problem' that we see here in Cape Town (through the expression of informal

settlements) if we are not considering the inextricably linked relationship of density to

sustainability (in the context of self-build housing)...then we will continue to fail.

That said Mr Parvin is certainly right about one thing; lets not assume that the first answer to

a problem is to build something. I think the architectural profession has more authority than

it realises in this regard.

housing without land ownership or of any sort of plannig. I am sure that Parvin here is

addressing a primally important architectural challenge. Sadly, a CNC machine and a stack

of plywood are probably beyond the means of most of these self-built-slum dwellers. This

"creative commons" solution will have to accomodate indigenous designs making use of

locally available materials. Then it can start to fulfill its promise.

Jun 7 2013: In my opinion, this young english architect has completly misconceived the

meaning of architecture and design by trying to democratize them creating pre-moulded

houses which are completly outdated (why reinvent the wheel?????) - in terms of design and

concept ( a universal model, to attend demands for housing around the world). A "poor"

model to be used by the "poor". What about local culture? And local climate and

environment? What will the collateral effects (emotional, psycological, cultural... ) be by

living in a space that is practically a wooden box, or better, simply a shed to shelter?

Alastair Parvin, people deserve much more than pieces of plywood cut with a 3D printer tobe fix-up into a shed to "live in". In my opinion that is NOT architecture NOR design.

Jun 9 2013: As I understood it, there is no universal model to be produced.

WikiHouse is a directory of blueprints and anyone can choose blueprints or submitones. In this presentation, he only showed an example. The shed is not meant as the

one and only solution.

He also said local groups are forming around the world. I guess they will know the

best what they need and, later, submit new or modified blueprints to accommodate the

necessities of their local environment.

For now the blueprints seem to rely on wood, but I can imagine other materials and

production techniques being introduced later when many more people had time to

tinker with and contribute to WikiHouses.

Jun 5 2013: I don't want to sound like an ass, but architectural and urban planning is

something you probably would want to leave to a specialist. You can argue that buildingswere there before architects, but not at the current scale. I'm also against elitism...But not

against well designed architecture, I do agree on the democratization of creativity, anyone

should be able and aloud to design, but I'm not so shore about implementing those ideas.

What if the idea sucks? Do we want our cities to look and work like favelas? How about the

3D printing of guns? Something badly designed can also kill. I just think that extending the

capacities of architects engineers and designers to everyone is a bit premature. Alastair don't

get me wrong, I think the questions you ask are very important and there is a huge gap of

solutions for those very same questions, congrats for not ignoring the elephant in the room.

Jul 2 2013: If the job of architecture fell to a specialist who knew how to use Google

Sketchup, it's fair to say it would still not be AS specialised as it must be now. Just

because some technology or concept, or anything COULD be used for something

dangerous doesn't mean it should be avoided. Electricity: "PEOPLE COULD BE

ZAPPED TO DEATH!", the car: "PEOPLE COULD BE RAN OVER AND DIE!", or

an economy of development based on oil and corporations: "WE COULD CHOKE

THE PLANET TO DEATH AND ALL DIE!". or medicine: "PEOPLE COULD

HAVE AN OVERDOSE AND DIE!". Nothing is more brutal than a stone age life of

toiling away without access to basic modern necessities.

People in Brazil's favelas need housing and with a library of better designs to draw

upon, rather than being forced to use poor improvised methods, much more modern,

adaptable, well fitting, and artistic designs are possible without waiting for

government grants or for someone else to take initiative. They would no longer be

forced to look like favelas as a new set of designs become possible, broken down intosimple directions build-able by regular people from 3D designs (possibly made by

someone with specialist 3D modelling skills, like that friend you have that knows how

to use Wordpress, or Adobe After Effects).

Alastair Parvin believes in making architecture accessible to 100 percent of the population. Full
