Fasts of Shawwaalul-MukarramThere is a Hadith which mentions the fasts of

Shawwaalul-Mukarram:

] øá$…ø ‰öçûÙ ø]Ö× #äô‘ø× $o ]Ö× #äöÂø× ø nûäôæø ‰ø× $ÜøÎ ø Ù øVÚøàû‘ø Ý ø…øÚø– ø^ áø$ öÜ $ ” Âøàû] øe ôoû] ø m %çûhø]Ÿ û øÞ û’ø … ôp ô ùE …æ]åÚŠ × Ü D ] ø i ûføÃøäü ‰ô j &^ Úôàû øç $]Ù õÒ ø áøÒ ø’ô nø^ Ý ô]Ö‚ $aû† !

Translation : Hazrat Abu-Ayyoob Ansaari Raziyallahu-anhu has reported that Hazrat Rasoolullah Sallallahu-alaihi-wasallam said: Such a person, who observed fasts in the Holy month of Ramazaan and then observessix supererogatory (Nafl) fasts in the monthof Shawwaal, is like that person who observed

fasts for ever. (Saheeh-Muslim)

In the above-mentioned Hadith-e-Paak, HazratRasoolullah, The Mercy for both the worlds, Sallallahu-

alaihi-wasallam , had stated the merits of the sixsupererogatory (Nafl) fasts being observed in themonth of Shawwaal and persuaded his Ummah toobserve these fasts as such fasts hold great reward.

In the distribution of wages and rewards, Haqq Ta’alaShaanhu has shown the great mercy by promisingthat every good deed will be rewarded ten times. When a person observes the thirty (30) fasts in theHoly month of Ramazaan and then observes six (6)

more fasts in the month of Shawwaal, the totalnumber of fasts comes to thirty six (36). And by

multiplying 36 by 10, we get 360. As per the lunarcalendar, a year contains 360 days. Therefore, observing 36 fasts will be counted as 360 fasts near

Allah Almighty, and in this way the reward forobserving fasts of full year will be granted.

If any person observes six supererogatory(Nafl) fasts of Shawwaal with the fasts of the Holymonth of Ramazaan every year, then such a personwill be deemed to observing the fasts in the entire life.

Allahu-Akbar! What an unlimited mercy of Allah Almighty is it that on a little hard work, an easymethod has been provided to gain the great rewardfor observing fast during the whole life. May HaqqTa’ala grant Tawfeeq to all of us. Aameen.

If the fasts of Ramazanul-Mubarak last 29days, still it will be counted as 30 days as everyMuslim has intention of observing the fasts of 30 days

in the Holy month of Ramazaan. And in this way, 29fasts of Ramazaanul-Mubarak and 6 fasts ofShawwaal totalling 35 fasts will be granted the rewardfor the fasts of a full year. Moreover, Hazoor-e-AqdasSallallahu-alaihi-wasallam had given this good news of

the great reward only on observing the fasts ofRamazaanul-Mubarak and six fasts of Shawwaal, so

there is no need to ask such a question that if onefast will decrease due to the sighting of the moon, willthe reward for a full year be granted or not.

Some people think that the said reward will begranted only when the minimum fast of one day willbe observed necessarily next day to Eid, however, itis not correct. If anyone did not start observing thesesix fasts from the next day to Eid, and observed thesefasts in the month of Shawwaal anytime, he or she isalso entitled to this reward.

The fasts of Shawwal have a wide choice ofobservance. One can observe these fasts from thebeginning of the month or from the middle of themonth or during the last days of the month. It is alsoallowed to observe these six fasts either continuouslyor separately. No restrictions on this count.

It is mandatory for such Muslim women, whosehusbands are present in their homes, to seek theconsent of their husbands to observe these six fasts.Observing Nafl fasts without seeking the consent ofone’s husband is prohibited by the Islamic Shari’ah.

Object of RamazanBy: Hazrat Maulana Ilyas Patel Sahib

On a sweltering hot day your throat has becomeparched. You are in the privacy of your home and therefreshingly cool water is within hand's reach. Youdesire to drink it, but you do not. Why? Simply becauseyou are fasting and while fasting you cannot eat anddrink. If somebody prompts you to nevertheless drink itand says: "Nobody is watching," you will immediatelyrebuke him with the words: "But Allah is watching!"

ALLAH TA'ALA IS WATCHING!

Subhan-Allah! Allah Ta'ala is watching. Allahu- Akbar! Allah Ta'ala is All Hearing, All Knowing, He isOmnipresent. He sees and knows when we cheat whilefasting, thus we resist all temptations of food, drink andlawful conjugal relations from dawn to dusk. We havelearnt the lesson of Taqwa. We have learnt that lessonwhich the fasting was meant to teach us. Allah Ta'ala iswatching! Yes, Allah Ta'ala is watching! Every timethere is an urge to eat or drink while fasting, the voicefrom within cries out: "Allah Ta'ala is watching!" Dozensof times daily for an entire month this reality isreaffirmed. Allah Ta'ala is watching. So deeply is itembedded in the heart that by the time Ramazan isover, a person becomes conscious of Allah Ta'ala to

such an extent that he is now guided by an inner forcethat propels him in the direction of righteousness andturns him away from sin.

TAQWA

The fasts of Ramazan were prescribed for thepurpose and object of attaining Taqwa. This is clearlydeclared in the Qur'an-al-Kareem. Taqwa simply is toobey the commands of Allah Ta'ala and refrain from all

sin, the increased rewards for lbaadah (worship) inRamazan and all the blessings of this great monthshould be considered as the bonus. The object isTaqwa. If one performs an abundance of Salah, completes the recitation of the Holy Qur'an thirty timesand engages in many other acts of lbaadah, but fails togive up sins - one has failed to achieve the object and

purpose of Ramazan. One has failed to firmly embedthe reality of Taqwa in the heart, the Taqwa that criesout "Allah is watching" whenever one contemplatescommitting any transgression.

TEMPTATION

The dictates of Taqwa are not restricted to

abstaining from drinking, gambling, adultery, transacting in interest and other such vices. IndeedTaqwa demands that while abstaining from all theabove vices, one also observes Taqwa in one'sbusiness. When the temptation to cheat the customerbeckons, or when one is tempted to buy stolen goods,

or to indulge in fraud, at that time also the heart shouldcry out "Allah is watching" and it should restrain onefrom the sin.

RIGHTS

Similarly, Taqwa demands the fulfillment of therights of the husband/wife, It also demands the joiningof family ties. It demands respect for the elders andkindness for the young. Taqwa entails, among other

aspects, being honest and clear in all monetarydealings and social interactions. Hence when there is awedding or funeral, or at the time of distributing theinheritance of the deceased, the same level of Allahconsciousness must be displayed as was apparentwhen refraining from drinking the cold water whilefasting.

PURDAH

Likewise, when the laws of purdah are violated, does the heart cry out "Allah is watching"? Or when oneintends to watch something on TV., which will mostdefinitely involve one in zina of the eyes and ears, doesone hear the voice from within: "Allah is watching," as a

result of which one refrains from that sin? The samepertains to the Shar’ee' aspects of appearance andclothing. How often have we done things to appeaseand please even the enemies of Allah Ta'ala andHazrat Rasulullah ( Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam )? How oftenhave we abandoned the dictates of Taqwa in order to

earn a few coppers? Now is the time to sincerelyrepent. It is the time to say "Allah is watching" and to doeverything to please Him. It is a time to acquire Taqwa.

ABSTAIN FROM SIN

This then is the object of Ramazan. This will onlybe achieved if we conduct ourselves in this great monthwith Taqwa. Or else the object of Ramazan will bedefeated. Hence Hazrat Rasulullah ( Sallallahu Alaihi

Wasallam ) is reported to have said: "He who does notforsake lying and other futile actions, Allah Ta'ala hasno need for him to give up his food and drink." Thustogether with fasting, performing Salah, reading theHoly Qur'an, serving the cause of Deen, etc,, one musttotally abstain from every sin in the month of Ramazanand adorn oneself with Taqwa. Insha-Allah this will then

carry one along for the rest of the eleven months toabstain from all sins.

May Allah Ta'ala enable us to make thisRamazan a month where we will truly attain Taqwa.

Aameen.

Eid

Discussing Eid before Ramazan evencommences may seem strange. Though this is indeedunusual, such a discussion is extremely necessary ifone wishes to truly enjoy Eid in reality. The reality of Eid can only be attained if one spent a true Ramazan .

7/25/2019 Al Noor June and July 2015

While Eid is certainly meant to be a joyous occasion, the true happiness of Eid should be understood in itsproper perspective. Consider the situation of a studentwho has spent the entire year at an institution. At theend of the year a celebration is held. He is wearing theexpensive new outfit that he bought especially for thisoccasion. All varieties of treats have been prepared. The happiness in the atmosphere is enchanting. However, he has just received his results. The resultsstate that he has failed. What occasion will hecelebrate? What will he rejoice over? Eid should beconsidered in a similar manner. The month of Ramazan was especially given to the Ummah to acquire thewealth of Taqwa (consciousness of Allah Ta'ala. Allah Ta'ala declares:

" O you who Believe, verily fasting wasprescribed upon you just as it was ordainedupon those before you so that you may attainTaqwa ."

Taqwa entails the forsaking of everydisobedience of Allah Ta'ala. One who has spent hisRamazan in various forms of ibaadah (worship) but has

not given up sin, has not attained Taqwa . What will hecelebrate? What will he rejoice over? The onlydifference is that one's results of Ramazan are notreceived "in black and white" in this world. However, every person can, to some extent, judge for himselfwhether he has passed or not.

REALITY OF EID

The reality of Eid is encapsulated in some

couplets attributed to Hazrat Shaikh Sayyid Abdul-Qaadir Jeelani Sahib ( Rahmatullahi Alaihi ). If the messageof these couplets is taken to heart, Insha-Allah one willtruly have an Eid in reality :

Ö n ³ ‹ ]ÖÃ n ‚ ÖÛà Öf ‹ ]Ö r ‚ m ‚

]ÞÛ ]ÖÃ n ‚ ÖÛà ]Úà Úà ]Öç Â n ‚

" Eid is not for the one who has worn new garments Eid in reality is for the one who has gained safety

from the warnings (of punishment) "

The message expressed here is clear. The joy ofEid is for the person who, by his obedience to AllahTa'ala, has gained safety from the warnings of

punishment that have been sounded in the Holy Qur'an and the Ahaadith against those who engage indisobedience. Adorning oneself with new garmentsdoes not achieve anything. Indeed, adorning oneselfwith the garments of Taqwa will gain the blessings ofboth worlds. Hence, how tragic it is that people spendhours, rather days, to get the "right" Eid outfit. In the

process numerous aspects that are against the dictatesof Taqwa are also perpetrated. This is besides the factthat every moment of Ramazan wasted is like millionslost. Therefore, one should not make new clothes afundamental necessity. It is Sunnah to wear the "best"clothes that one owns on the day of Eid , not

necessarily something new.

Ö n ‹ ]ÖÃ n ‚ ÖÛà …Ò g ]ÖÛ_ ^ m ^

]ÞÛ ]ÖÃ n ‚ ÖÛà i † Õ ]Öí _ ^ m ^ " Eid is not for the one who rides a smart conveyance

Eid is for the one who has left out sins "

Driving a fancy car is no measure of success. Theperson who has forsaken all sins has acquired Taqwa —the object of Ramazan. He is indeed successful and hasreason to rejoice and celebrate. Eid is for him.

Ö n ³ ‹ ]Ö ³ Ã n ³ ‚ Ö ³ Ûà i f í j † e ÖÃ ç

]Þ ³ Û ³ ^ ]Öà n ‚ Ö× j ^ ñg ]Ö„ pŸ m à ç " Eid is not for the one who is perfumed with Ood (itr)

Eid is for the one who repents and does not return to sin "

The one who has repented and remainssteadfast upon his repentance will pass on the Day of

Judgment. He will then enjoy perpetual Eid . RAMAZAN SPECIALS

The day of Eid at the end of Ramazan will comeand go. In order to truly deserve celebrating on thatday, we must dedicate ourselves to acquiring the objectof Ramazan . We will have to spend our minutes of Ramazan in a correct manner. If hours are spent

shopping for "Eid Specials" in Ramazan , while the " Ramazan Specials" given by Allah Ta'ala in the form ofincreased rewards is lost, it will indeed be very tragic. Our Eid will then be a very superficial one.

May Allah Ta'ala grant us the ability to spend ourtime correctly in Ramazan and grant us a true Eid . Aameen.

emphasis on the fact that the Jews loved physical lifemuch more than did the Arab polytheists. Such aninclination should not have been surprising on the partof the latter, for, after all, they did not believe in theother world, and physical life was the be-all and end-allfor them. But the Jews acknowledged the existence ofthe other world, and even had the illusion that theyalone deserved its joys, and yet it was they who, aboveall others, wished to live in this world as long aspossible. This very desire shows how baseless theirpretention was, and how they themselves knew thatthey would have to face the fires of Hell in the otherworld, and that physical life was, as long as it lasted, akind of protection against their final fate.

Raziyallahu Anhu . One day he told him, “O Salmaan! Why do you not barter your freedom from your masterand free yourself from slavery.”

This was exactly what Hazrat SalmaanRaziyallahu Anhu had desired, so he went to his masterand asked him what was the price for his freedom. The Jew asked for 40 uqiyah of gold and 300 datepalms! Upon hearing the Jews demands, Hazrat Nabi

Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked his companionsas to who was willing to free Hazrat Salmaan

Raziyallahu Anhu from the slavery of the oppressiveJew. The Sahabah Raziyallahu Anhum responded withgreat joy at the request of Hazrat Nabi AkramSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam each one bringing whatever hecould until they had collected 300 date palms. Thenall of them together with Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu

Alaihi Wasallam began ploughing the land and sowingthe seeds of these date palms on the land of the Jew.

Now the condition of the 40 uqiyah only remained. Allah Ta’ala made arrangements for this to be fulfilledin a short time. Not long after the required amountcame into the possession of the Muslims in the formof maale-ghaneemat from a battle which the Muslimshad fought. Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made over the amount to Hazrat Salmaan FarsiRaziyallahu Anhu and told him to go and free himself.Hazrat Salmaan Raziyallahu Anhu ran to the Jew withthe amount and freed himself throwing the yoke ofslavery to his head. From now on he perpetuallyremained in the service of Hazrat Nabi AkramSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam .

The spirit of the Buzurgaan-e-Deen

Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Sahib (Rahmatullahi

This feeling andemotion is valuable in the sight of Allah Ta'ala. Perhapsthis can become a means of his salvation, though thecause of his anger is not correct. (We are notdisrespectful to Hazrat Nabi Akram ( Sallallahu alaihi

Akram ( Sallallahu alaihi wasallam ).Hazrat Thaanwi Sahib (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) considers this

to be a means of Maulvi Ahmad Raza Khan's salvation, but the latter is not prepared to consider even great actsof ibaadah as a means of salvation for others.

This point is not found in the hadeethQ: It appears in the hadeeth: ]ƒ]Ò f † ]ŸÚ ÝÊÓ f † æ] (Whenthe Imam says Allahu-Akbar then say Allahu-Akbar).From this we understand that the Muqtadee (follower)can continue reading the tasbeeh even after theImam says Allahu-Akbar. However, I have read that

according to Hazrat Imaam Abu-Hanifah ( Rahmatullahi-alaihi ), the Muqtadee cannot read the tasbeeh once theImam says the Alif of Allahu-Akbar.

A: This point cannot be deduced from the workingof the hadeeth: When the Imam says Allahu-Akbar, theMuqtadee should also say Allahu-Akbar. There is nobasis to wait for the Imam to say the Alif, or the kaaf orthe ain. This is a sickness amongst people.

The hadeeth in which ]ƒ]Ò f † ]ŸÚ ÝÊÓ f † æ] (When theImam says Allahu-Akbar then say Allahu-Akbar)appears, then in the very same hadeeth the following

words also appear: ]ƒ]Î ³ ³ ³ † œÊ ³ ³ ³ ³ ª Þ ³ ³ ’ j ³ ³ ç ] (when the Imam

reads then remain silent). This narration is recorded

in Saheeh Muslim, but it is very difficult to locate it. After narrating this hadeeth, Imam Muslim was

asked whether ]ƒ]Î ³ ³ ³ † œÊ ³ ³ ³ ³ ª Þ ³ ³ ’ j ³ ³ ç ] is authentic or not.

Imam Muslim Rahimahullah replied, “It is authenticaccording to me.”

The student then asked him, “Then why have

you not recorded it in your book Saheeh Muslim?”Imam Muslim Rahimahullah replied, “I have not

laid down the condition of recording all thoseahadeeth that are authentic according to me. I haveonly made the condition of narrating those ahadeethon whose authenticity there is consensus.

[Imam Muslim Rahimahullah said, “Do you want someonemore reliable than Sulaiman? Abu Bakr replied, “Then itmeans that the Hadith of Hazrat Abu Hurairah Raziyallahu

Anhu : when the Imam reads remain silent is authentic.”Imam Muslim Rahimahullah said, “It is authentic according tome”.

Abu Bakr then asked him, “Then why did you not

record it in your book?” Imam Muslim Rahimahullahreplied, “I did not record everything that is authenticaccording to me. Rather, I only record those ahadeethwhich the muhadditheen have agreed to their authenticity.”(Saheeh Muslim Vol.1 Pg 174)]

Etiquette

Second EtiquetteRefraining from evil

Every student should purify his Nafs of bad habits

and evil qualities. He should always protect himself fromspeaking lies, backbiting, slander, stealing, unnecessaryspeech etc. The reason being, that Ilm, is an intrinsicibaadah related to the heart.

Just as Salaah is an external Ibaadah and cannotbe correct without external purity, in the same way Ilm

(knowledge) which is an internal Ibaadah cannot beattained without internal purity.

A Hadith narrated in Ta’leemul Muta’allim statesthat Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Aperson who does not refrain from sins during his studentdays, Allah Ta’ala will involve him in one of three things.

Either he will die in his youth; or despite his capability andacademic achievements he will go to such places wherehis knowledge will be destroyed and he will not be able tospread his knowledge; or he will suffer disgrace in theservice of a king or some wealthy person.”

If a student of Deen keeps away from sins, peoplewill benefit from his knowledge and the sources of Ilm

(knowledge) will open up for him.Once a pious person advised a student saying,

“Stay away from backbiting and don’t ever mix withstudents who engage in indecent and vile talk.” Thatperson who engages in useless talk wastes away his timeas well as yours. To stay away from sinful people and to sitin the company of the pious is also a type of Taqwa.”

Hadhrat Shaqeeq Balkhi Rahimahullah said: “There arethree things upon which if you do not practice, you willnever gain any benefit even though you may read eightytrunks of books.”

• Do not have love for this world because it is notthe abode of a Muslim.

• Do not befriend shaytaan because he is not thefriend of a Muslim.

• Do not cause takleef (harm) to anyonebecause this is not the occupation of a Muslim.

Maimoon bin Mehraan Rahimahullah used to say thatthere is no benefit in obtaining Ilm or increasing it if it is notcoupled with fear (for Allah Ta’ala) and obedience (to AllahTa’ala).

TWO WAYS OF TAZKIYAHThe first way:

One should acquaint oneself with a pious personand try to follow what he teaches with all his heart. Inthis way, he may rid himself of his sins and lead a pure, clean life, and save himself for destruction.

Allah Ta’ala, the Most Merciful and Ever Forgiving, hasa solution for this person.

In this world, if one does not look after one’s healthand falls sick, he has to go to the dispensary or hospital toget better. In the same way, if one does not go to the pious

BRINGING UP

Et iquette of gr eet ing

The Noble Qur’an commands that we greet

one another (Surah Noor, 24:27 and 61). It is

regarded as the best deed in Islam (Bukharii and

Muslim). Entry into Jannah is subject to possessing

imaan (faith), mutual affection and the exchange of

salutation (Muslim). It is Sunnah to say the Salaamand Waajib to reply a Salaam. The first to greet

should say: “ Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa

barakatuhu .” (Peace be upon you and the mercy and

blessings of Allah Ta’ala). It would suffice if a person

says only “ Assalamu Alaikim ” (Peace be upon you),

this earns one a reward worth ten pious deeds; butadding “ Wa Rahmatullah ” (And the mercy of Allah

Ta’ala) will attain the reward equal to twenty pious

deeds. If “ Wa Barakatuhu ” (And His blessings) is

added one will be entitled to a reward that equals

thirty pious deeds (Abu Dawood and Tirmizi). It is

incumbent upon a rider to greet one who is walking

on foot. A pedestrian will greet one who is seated andthose who are fewer in number will greet the large

party (Bukhari and Muslim). The younger will greet

the elder (Bukhari) say the Salaam audibly for it is

incorrect to merely gesture with the hands in the

manner of Christians or Jews (Tirmizi). A Murabbi

must set an example to children by takingprecedence when greeting. This is the Islamic

procedure. When a non-Muslim says the Salaam, the

reply should be “Wa alaykum” only, and one must not

take the initiative to say the Salaam (Bukharii and

Muslim). The Muslim, who precedes others in

greetings, is the closest to Allah Ta’ala, the Exalted(Tirmizi). It is improper to make Salaam to a person

who is performing Wuzu (ablution) or Ghusl (taking a

bath) or is in the toilet, eating, reciting the Holy

Qur’an, eulogizing Allah Ta’ala, reciting the talbiyah,

delivering a khutbah or lecture, teaching or calling out

the Azaan or Iqaamah. It is not Waajib (incumbent) for one engaged in

any of these activities to respond if greeted by any

unwary person.( To be continued, Insha-Allah )

of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam whowould then refer the matter to Hazrat Nabi AkramSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam if they did not know thecorrect answer.

It was the customary practice of the previouseras that the father would teach his daughters, abrother would teach his sister and a husband wouldteach his wife. This practice is still prevalent in a fewareas, where the learned women teach the younggirls of the locality. But, unfortunately, generally thissystem has been annihilated by the custom ofsending young girls to school even after they havereached the age of maturity.

Educating our childrenNurturing and upbringing of children requires

that they be taught the basics of deen , respect forparents and elders, etc., and not that they be sent toschools where the observance of purdah isnonexistent, where the free-thinking mentality isrampant, where irreligiousness is part and parcel ofthe curriculum, where vile and despicable habits arenurtured, where truth is distorted and lies concocted, and where a host of other harms exist. It is incumbentthat we make the correct arrangements to ensure thatour children – and especially the womenfolk – studyat home.

Schools are dens of vices, especially for girls. When the proper arrangements are made for them,

7/25/2019 Al Noor June and July 2015

they will then fulfil their responsibilities towards theirparents and husbands, and live in this world withhonour and respect by protecting their chastity. Theywill also progress monumentally in deen , and theiroffsprings will be pious and religious as well.

The need for educating our children starts atthe very inception of their lives, from the time of birth. It is recorded in the hadeeth that when any child wasborn, it was bathed, cleaned and presented beforeHazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam whowould recite the azaan and iqaamah in the ears andthen perform tahneek . Tahneek entailed placing akhajoor (date) in the child’s mouth after it had beensoftened and moistened in the mubaarak mouth ofHazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam , so thatthe blessed saliva of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu

Alaihi Wasallam and the sweet khajoor were the first

and foremost parts to enter the mouth. This practiceensured that the child would be imbued with a sweettongue and a jovial temperament. This was thegeneral practice of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu AlaihiWasallam .

When the child learnt to speak, the child wastaught:

Ÿ]Öä ]Ÿ]Ö× ä æ u‚ åŸ † m Ô Öä Öä ]ÖÛ× Ô æÖä ]Ö v Û‚

laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahulahul mulku wa lahul hamd – and thereafter, as thechild grew older, the child was taught the necessaryaspects of deen . Children easily memorise what they

hear uttered in their presence. Hence, if the parentsread istighfaar , the kalimah , Durood Shareef , etc.regularly, the child will automatically memorise themas well, but if the child is accustomed to hearingvulgar and obscene words, then such words will beembedded in the child’s mind and abandoning suchlanguage, when the child becomes older, will becomeextremely difficult.

Moulana Yahya Rahmatullahi Alaihi memorising the Qur’aan

Hazrat Moulana Yahya Rahmatullahi Alaihi , asaint of contemporary times, was taught a quartersipara of the Qur’aan by the time he was weaned. This remarkable achievement was the result oflistening and learning the Qur’aan at the hands of the

young girls who looked after him. Instead of recitingfairy tales and stories of some fictitious characters, they would teach the Qur’aan to him and, by the ageof seven, Moulana had memorised the entire Qur’aanShareef. Thereafter, it was his daily practice to recitethe entire Qur’aan Shareef before partaking of hismeals.

Moulana would commence his recitation at Fajrand complete it at the time of Zuhr , and this practicecontinued for six months. The result of this was thatthe Qur’aan became entrenched in Moulana’s heartto such an extent that the need subsequently neverarose for him to look into a Qur’aan.

It is imperative that we begin the training ofchildren in their formative years so that on the Day of

Qiyaamah , they will not lay a claim of negligenceagainst us, in the court of Allah Ta`ala, and say: “O Allah! Our parents had the utmost concern for ourdaily needs. They fed us, clothed us and, if we weresick, they made the necessary arrangements for ourtreatment. They perpetually strove to keep us happybut, O Allah! They did not teach us deen . O Allah!

Ask them why?”

The parents will be taken to task for neglectingto fulfil this fundamental duty. Children are a trust anda favour from Allah Ta`ala. It is binding upon us touphold this trust and appreciate this favour, and themanner of accomplishing this is inculcating goodcharacter and pious actions in them.

In some areas, children are taught salaah bytheir mothers, elder sisters, aunts, grannies, etc., andthe training is of such a nature that until they do notcomplete their salaah , they will not get their meals.Subsequently, when the women of the house transferthe importance of salaah to the children, they willdevelop a great enthusiasm for it and the importance

of it will be embedded in their hearts.

Harms of incorrect education

But, if they are sent to school, there is atendency to drift away from deen and ultimately their

beliefs, character, morals and actions become corruptand they become averse to the laws of Allah Ta`ala

and the noble sunnat of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam . Those children who are raised underthe correct supervision of their parents, are imbuedwith the correct understanding of deen , goodcharacter and polite speech.

I was once addressing a group of women at acertain venue. The man of the house approached me

and said: “My wife wishes to pose a question to youon condition that I must not be present.”

I declared: “You have the option of staying orleaving, but a few other males will remain with me.”

He agreed to this request and his wife, speaking from behind a curtain, began herquestioning. She commenced by pointing out that shehad forwarded this question to various other ulama ,but received no satisfactory answer.

“I believe,” she started, “that whatever iscontained in the Qur’aan is correct, but it is myopinion that it was not directly revealed from AllahTa`ala, but compiled by Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu

Alaihi Wasallam and thereafter he, Hazrat Nabi AkramSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam , declared that it was from Allah Ta`ala merely to pacify the people.”

Where did this drivel emanate? These types ofthoughts and lopsided reasoning are the fruits ofEnglish secular education. The teachers in the

secular schools are devoid of any understanding ofdeen and, combined with the secular school

curriculum, the child is influenced to reason alongthese lines that the Qur’aan is not the divine word of Allah Ta`ala, etc. Now, what is to be expected of thestate of one’s Imaan? One of the fundamental beliefsof Islam is to unequivocally believe that the Qur’aanwas revealed by Allah Ta`ala and is the source ofguidance for all.

“Tell me,” I asked. “Have you read the seerat(biography) of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu AlaihiWasallam ?”

“Yes,” she instinctively replied. “I have read it inUrdu and English.”

“Then tell me,” I pointed out. “Did you comeacross in the seerat that two distinguishing qualitiesof Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam werehis honesty and truthfulness?”

“Yes,” she admitted. “I have come across thismany a times.”

“Then your question has been answered!”

“How? I do not understand,” she said, puzzled.

I then explained: “To claim that something wasrevealed by Allah Ta`ala, but in reality was not, isdishonesty and an honest person will not make sucha claim. An honest person will never hide that whichwas revealed to him no matter how beneficial or

detrimental it may prove to be to the general people. If an honest son quotes his father, he will not attribute

anything to his father that he thinks will benefit thelistener without pointing out that he has added thisstatement from his own side.

“Similarly, to suggest that Hazrat Nabi AkramSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam had declared that theQur’aan was revealed by Allah Ta`ala, merely topacify the people, is ludicrous because such an

audacious claim will eventually be exposed. Yourreasoning belittles the intellect of Hazrat Nabi AkramSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam because it concludes thatHazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did notconsider the possibility that people will eventuallyrealise that the Qur’aan was indeed not revealed by

Allah Ta`ala and the years of toiling and striving he

had undertaken, to spread the message, will berendered useless. Na`oozubillah ! Not considering thefinal outcome of one’s actions depicts one’s level ofintelligence, and intelligent people generally thinkabout the end result of their words and actions.”

“Now I understand,” she said.

This woman had acquired English seculareducation! The point that I wish to draw your attentionto is that if we are going to dispatch our daughters tosecular schools, they will be indoctrinated withnegative sentiments and ideologies about Islam. They will deny the revelation of the Qur’aan, the

prophethood of Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu AlaihiWasallam and the existence of the malaa’ikah . They

will opine that salaah, sajdah, ruku and otheribaadaat are dogmatic actions and they will notobserve purdah , but dress immodestly, shamefullyexposing their bodies. What will be the outcome ofthis? Utter ruination in this world and the hereafter!

A huge sum of money is spent on their tertiaryeducation and, during their years of study, the

parents spend lavishly on them to maintain theirhappiness. After they graduate, some find a job whileothers do not. And sometimes those who have a jobcannot maintain their standard of living which theywere accustomed to during their stay at theuniversity, because the salary that they are earning isless than what used to be spent on them.

Freedom and gender equality

Another evil quality that college educated girlsdevelop is the concept of ‘freedom from beingdominated’ and that everyone is created equal.Hence, when they marry they are unprepared to liveunder the ‘yoke’ of their husbands. They will have anequal say in every affair of their married lives. Howwill it ever be possible for them to obey theirhusbands? It will be virtually impossible and, AllahTa`ala protect us, if the husband is also irreligious, the spouses will lead their own separate and free

lives.

Conversely, if the husband is religiously

inclined, that home will become a mini Jahannum dueto the incompatibility of the spouses. When a child islearning to speak, Hazrat Nabi Akram Sallallahu AlaihiWasallam has instructed us that the first thing weshould teach the child is the kalimah and, as hegrows older, the different aspects of deen need to beimparted to him. If the correct and proper deeni

education is taught to the child then, Insha-Allah , thechild will be saved from odious and corruptedideologies; but if the child is reared in an incorrectenvironment, where no importance is attached toconcepts such as purdah , good character, salaah ,ecitation of the Qur’aan, fasting, etc., then the childwill be easily influenced by the negative sentiments

and profane reasoning prevailing in today’s society tosuch an extent that the child will even deny theexistence of Allah Ta`ala!

We have frequently met youth who deny theexistence of Allah Ta`ala; and met fathers whocomplain that their sons are denying the existence of

Allah Ta`ala.

“Thanks be to Allah Ta`ala?” the son askssardonically. “There is no such thing. If He does existthen show me His whereabouts.”

This lamentable state is the direct result of theirincorrect upbringing. It is binding upon the parents to

fulfil the fundamental needs of their children; and ofthose needs, the primary need is their deeni

education. Daily, a time should be set aside forteaching deen to them. If the parents do notdischarge this responsibility, then the child will growup to be a disobedient and disrespectful child andflagrantly trample upon the parents’ rights. “This isthe era of freedom and equality,” he will sayindignantly. “Parents and children are equal. Ourparents are our peers. They do not command anyauthority over us!”

Correct rearing and nurturing of children is agreat responsibility placed upon the parents.

The first madrasah

The first madrasah of the child is the mother’slap. This is the initial stage of his education. The childwill imitate the subconscious actions of the mother.Hence, if she utters ‘Alhamdulillah’ upon sneezing, the child will learn that one should say ‘Alhamdulillah’after sneezing and, if she replies ‘Yarhamukallah’ inreply to one who says ‘Alhamdulillah’ after sneezing, the child will learn that as well. If the child observesthe parents making salaam to one another, he willalso become accustomed to making salaam towhomever he meets. The character displayed by themother will be established in the child. If she uttersfoul and abusive words or speaks with gay abandon

in every affair of life, the child will also be accustomedto speaking with a free tongue and not keeping a

vigilant check on what he/she says.Ironically, some parents become proud when

their child uses vulgar language. This is not an aspectto be boastful of, but rather something to wail over.Children automatically inculcate the actions

of their parents. They will imitate the actions of theirseniors and, once these actions become habitual, it isextremely difficult for them to discard them. Therefore, the responsibility of the mother in nurturingthe children is far greater.

If the child falls seriously ill – Allah Ta`alaprotect us – and the doctor prescribes a strict diet, then the entire household will adopt this diet toensure that the child follows it. Otherwise, he will be

admitted to a hospital where the prescribed diet canbe followed. The parents invariably spend endlesssleepless nights worrying and caring for the child, andeven relatives and neighbours sympathise with theparents in their predicament and offer theirassistance in caring for the child.

All this sympathy and concern is for a physicalsickness; but if the child perpetually uses vulgarlanguages or perpetually tells lies, then there is ageneral apathy or unconcern at this behaviour, implying that we do not consider these to be incorrector sinful actions, whereas they are in direct conflict

with the injunctions of the Qur’aan and hadeeth ! Whydo we display such a hypocritical attitude in these

affairs? Why do we have such a brazen indifferenceto these ‘sicknesses’? Our children will become goodcitizens and true assets to our community only if werear and nurture them in the correct manner.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair Raziyallahu Anhu accompanied his father for all the battles that hefought in. Hazrat Zubair Raziyallahu Anhu used to

make Hazrat Abdullah Raziyallahu Anhu sit behind himon the horse and Hazrat Abdullah Raziyallahu Anhu used to cling on to his father’s waist for support. Thereason that Hazrat Zubair Raziyallahu Anhu took hisson for jihad was that he desired to expel the fear of

jihad from his son’s heart. The result of this was thatHazrat Abdullah Raziyallahu Anhu became noted for

his extraordinary courage and valour on thebattlefield. He feared absolutely nothing. Thisremarkable achievement came about because of thetraining and guidance he had received from an earlychildhood. That was the era of jihad being fought withhorses, swords, and arrows. Hence, the childrenwere taught to master the skills of that era. In themodern era, our children’s training will be to takethem to the musjid .

Once, I was invited to a certain place and myhost had a three or four year-old son. When the timefor salaah had arrived, I told the boy, “Come! Let usgo to the musjid .” He immediately took hold of my

finger and accompanied me to the musjid .

“What is your opinion of this child?” another

friend of mine queried. “He seems to be an obedientchild,” I remarked. “He came with us to the musjid .”

“Once,” explained my friend, “this child’sgrandfather was teaching and advising him in somematter when the child indignantly replied, ‘Stoptalking and be silent! You are bothering me.’”

Surprisingly I asked, “Did he really say that?”My friend nodded in the affirmative.

I investigated this matter and found out thatactually, these were the precise words that the verysame grandfather had uttered to the boy’sgrandmother when she had advised him on a certainmatter. Accordingly, the child responded in a mannerthat he understood to be correct.

Therefore, it is of paramount importance thatwe restrain ourselves and speak respectfully in thepresence of children.

The effects of us nurturing our childrencorrectly

Our pious predecessors nurtured their childrenwith good habits, excellent character and goodetiquettes, which also produced a positive effect onthe child. Once, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar’sRaziyallahu Anhu grandson was seated next to him

7/25/2019 Al Noor June and July 2015

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/al-noor-june-and-july-2015 45/64

when a visitor came to meet him and posed thefollowing question: “What is the penalty for killing amosquito?”

“Who are you and where did you come from?”Hazrat Abdullah Raziyallahu Anhu had lost his vision inboth eyes at that time. The visitor introduced himselfand revealed that he was from Iraq. Hazrat AbdullahRaziyallahu Anhu told him: “You do not ask about thepenalty for killing Hazrat Nabi Akram’s Sallallahu Alaihi

Wasallam grandson in the plains of Karbala, but youquery about the penalty for killing a mosquito?” Thevisitor became infuriated and glared at Hazrat

Abdullah Raziyallahu Anhu .

Hazrat Abdullah’s Raziyallahu Anhu grandsonupon witnessing this commented to his grandfather:

Þ¿ † æ]]Ö n Ô eª  n à Ú v Ûù† éÞ¿ † ]Ö„ Ö n Ø ]Öo ]Öà ˆ m ˆ ]ÖÏ ^ ↠They are staring at you with bloodshot eyes like howa disgraced inferior person will glare at his superior.

The grandson graphically captured the sceneto his grandfather. This was the level of intelligenceand discernment of children who were reared with thecorrect understanding of deen .

When Mahmood Ghaznawy came to India, hetook a Hindu youngster and raised him in a princelymanner. He taught him the royal etiquettes, themanner of addressing people, the way of conductingoneself in the royal court, etc. When this wasaccomplished, Hazrat Ghaznawy crowned him as the

royal prince. At this point, the youngster begancrying. When questioned in this regard, he said: “Mymother had always instilled the fear of Mahmood inmy heart. The cruelty of Mahmood was continuouslybandied around, such, that the children used totremble at the very mention of his name. If only mymother was still alive, then I would have told her thatMahmood was not evil, but a kind person and he hasraised me in a manner that they would not have beenable to accomplish. This is why I am crying.”

Our pious predecessors imparted deen to theirchildren practically. The children observed themanner in which they were leading their lives andlearnt the correct etiquettes in every facet of life; thesunnat manner of eating (washing our hands beforecommencing to eat, reciting ‘ Bismillah ’ before eating, eating with the right hand, drinking with the right handin three sips, eating small morsels of food, reciting‘ Alhamdulillah ’ during the meals and after drinking, etc.), the sunnat manner of wearing our clothes andthe masnoon du`aas to be recited on variousoccasions. In short, every feature of their lives wasled according to the teachings of Islam. This is thevery essence of rearing children and, if they arereared in this manner, then they will become the flag-bearers of deen and a source of guidance for all.

In contrast, if they are reared incorrectly, theywill become a source of grief and sorrow for theirparents. Numerous parents have complained to us

about the insensitivity and downright arrogancedisplayed by their children. Their attitude andmannerisms are abhorrent. They do not desire toeven talk to their parents, so much so that, if thefather enters the home, the child leaves the house inorder to avoid his company. If the child is raisedcorrectly, then he/she will respect and honour his/herparents and consider them to be a boon from AllahTa`ala. Incorrect upbringing of children will result inour detriment in this world and in the hereafter.

A certain youngster whose father is my friend, developed the habit of stealing and pilfering. Whenhe was caught and imprisoned, his father announcedthat his son had passed away in order to protect hishonour.

Once, I asked a person whether he had

attended to his children’s education.“What can I do?” he wailed. “They have

developed such bad habits that I am even preparedto pay 100 000 rupees to someone just to take themaway from my sight.”

This is the lamentable plight of today’s children. These very children, who were supposed to be thecomfort of our eyes, have become the source of ourgrief and sorrow and, if we analyse this situationobjectively, we will realise that the fault invariably liesat our feet. If they were brought up in the correctdeeni environment, they will naturally respect andhonour their parents and the parents as well will be

compassionate towards them. Life will be pleasantand trouble-free for everyone concerned.

But alas! We have not heeded the warnings ofour pious elders and our homes have beentransformed into hellfire! When the parents and thechildren have enmity for each other, the resultantcondition is the utter destruction of the family structure. The father expels the son from the home and instructsevery family member to sever ties with him.

But the mother, because of her natural undyinglove for her child, secretly arranges for the son to visitthem when the father is not around. Thus, the entirefamily structure is in tatters because of the incorrectupbringing of the children.

If a warrant of arrest is issued – Allah Ta`alaforbid! – and the child is thereafter incarcerated, how

concerned do we not become over this child’s plight?Every family member, relative, neighbour and friendwill endeavour to seek the child’s release fromimprisonment. But when this very same childdevelops evil habits, then why is it that no one evenblinks an eyelid at his actions?

Whereas the term of imprisonment for thiscrime is the fire of Jahannum ! Our primary concernshould be to save our children from the fire ofJahannum and, to achieve this, we need tocommunicate with them and advise them withcompassion and wisdom. It is reported in a hadeeththat when the child reaches the age of adolescence,

he or she should be treated like a smaller brother orsister. They should not be berated publicly or evenwithin the confines of the home and, when the childreaches a marriageable age, then the parents mustmake the arrangements for their marriage.

Thereafter, they should address him saying: “Omy child! Whatever rights you have over us, we havefulfilled it to the best of our ability. Now you aremarried. May Allah Ta`ala save us from the fitnah

which may emanate from you.”With regard to the relationship between

siblings, the hadeeth explicitly states that the elderbrother enjoys the status of the father. Theseconcepts have to be instilled in the lives of ourchildren. If the correct Islamic ethos is not inculcatedin our children, it will result in the destruction and

disgrace of the family honour which existed fordecades and, resultantly, the parents becomeashamed of presenting themselves in societybecause of their children’s actions.

A person does not unnecessarily amputate atroublesome or infected limb. Similarly, the fathercannot excommunicate his son or daughter, but how

does he interact with his child in a humane manner? How does he exercise patience with these conflictingconditions? All these types of problems are the directresult of incorrect education and nurturing. May AllahTa`ala grant us all the taufeeq to bring up our childrencorrectly. Aameen .

A Golden OpportunityFor the Muslim Community

A library is being considered the brain of aninstitution. The well-informed persons are conversant withthe fact that there are nearly 30,000 (thirty thousand)books on Tafseer , Hadith , Fiqh , Literature, Seerah ,History, Biography, Tasawwuf , Saraf & Nahv (grammar),Fasaahat & Balaaghat (eloquence & rhetoric), Tajweed &Qir’at (orthoepy), Medical and on Law, written in differentlanguages viz.
