APRIL 2014 5 FOCUS ON POWDER COATINGS production environment. The 3-D Hot Stamping (3DHS) process of Germany-based Leonhard Jurz Stiftung & Co KG cuts the usual process chain for the production of chromed parts with complex 3- D geometry. The Frimo Group GmbH in Germany and Great Britain-based Huntsman have developed an automotive engine hood manufactured in the RTM process with a PU matrix and special structure produced by Eschmann Textures International GmbH. The special structure imitates real sharkskin coated with a lacquer system from ISL- Chemie GmbH & Co using in- mould coating before moulding the part. Nap-Gard High Tg 7-2555 is used as a corrosion barrier coating for sub-sea and underground pipelines that operate in high temperature service. It can also be used as a corrosion coating under multi- layer insulation systems or as a corrosion coating in a stand-alone or dual-powder coating system. The operating system increases to 180°C (356°F) when Nap-Gard High Tg 7-2555 is used in combination with Axalta’s most recent dual layer system Nap- Gard 7-2675. The second layer ensures enhanced chemical resistance and decreased water permeability. Currently, Nap-Gard 7-2555 is approved by operating companies in Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico. It is now being used on a 50-km project in Mexico. The new Nap-Gard product builds on the earlier generation Nap-Gard 8-2535, which was indicated for operating temperatures up to 135°C (275°F). Titled Duranar Coating Innovations, the one-page document provides a quick overview of Duranar VARI-COOL coatings, which combine polychromatic pigments with proprietary ULTRA-COOL infrared (IR)-reflective coating technology by PPG. These coatings add an aesthetic and energy-saving dimension to metal roofs and wall panels by shifting colour when ambient light conditions and viewing angles change, and by helping buildings to use less air conditioning by deflecting solar heat. The flyer also contains information about Duranar pearl, Duranar textured powder and Duranar patterned-effect coatings. Duranar pearl coats give metal surfaces a 3D look by mixing shimmering effect pigments into the clear coat layer instead of the white, ivory or beige-coloured base layer. Duranar textured powder coatings achieve a distinctive salt-and-pepper appearance in a range of colors, while providing the hardness and solvent-free, low emissions of powder coatings. Duranar liquid patterned-effect coatings are engineered to replicate the look of exotic metal finishes without the high cost associated with those products. Readers also can learn about the ‘green’ and performance advancements associated with next-generation Duranar coatings made with lead- free pigments. Available in bright oranges and yellows, the coatings are shown in panel photos that highlight their vibrancy and colorfastness after five years of South Florida exposure testing for heat, humidity and sunlight.
