Advanced technology

The use of water as an effective extinguishing agent is not new. Water is the ideal fire suppressant: it is a natural resource that is harmless to man and the environment and is usually available in abundant supply.

By employing a specially developed atomization technique, the extinguishing capacity of water can be greatly increased. Water extinguishes fire through heat absorption. The smaller the water droplets, the more heat they absorb. The absorption of heat transforms the water into steam which displaces oxygen, so that the fire is put out even faster.

Ajax Chubb Varel applies this advanced technology in the Ajax Fog® water mist system.

IMO makes water mist system mandatory

The advantages of the water mist system are recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the organization responsible for fire safety on board ships. The IMO requires ships with an engine room larger than 500 m3 to be equipped with a water mist system. This circular forms part of the Solas (Safety of Life at Sea).

Environmentally friendly, safe and effective

The Ajax Fog® water mist system uses water only. No chemical additives are necessary. This means that the application is extremely environmentally-friendly and also harmless to humans.

The water mist system consumes much less water than conventional sprinkler systems. The applied atomization technique greatly reduces the size of the water droplets. As a result, less water is needed to create a larger heat-absorbing surface, so that the fire can be extinguished more quickly and efficiently. In this way, the water mist system combines excellent extinguishing properties with limited collateral damage.

Local application

The Ajax Fog® water mist system is used to protect specific items of equipment.

Its special features make the water mist system mainly suitable for protecting high-risk equipment, such as engines in the engine room. A water mist system is placed around the item of equipment being protected so that the fire can be promptly suppressed as soon as it starts. Key advantages are that the room does not need to be evacuated first or ventilated after the fire has been put out (which is necessary if an extinguishing gas or foam is used). So the extinguishing process starts faster and less time is lost afterwards, ensuring that operations are more rapidly restored.

Early detection

The Ajax Fog® water mist system is always linked to a fire detection system. The heart of the system is formed by a fire alarm panel. This panel makes use of Buscabling technology, so that the required cabling is kept to a minimum.

For an automatic system at least two detectors are placed above the facility being protected. Depending on the class, two UV flame detectors or a UV flame detector and a smoke detector are used. As soon as a fire is detected by both detectors, the Ajax Fog® water mist system is activated. The section valve opens, allowing the water to be discharged onto the protected object. The pump starts pumping the water through the opened riser system towards the object. A report is also sent back to the alarm panel so that staff can see that the extinguishing operation is in progress in a certain zone. The Ajax Fog® water mist system can also be manually activated.

Accurate fire suppression

The Ajax Fog® water mist system has a minimum continuous operation time of 20 minutes. Earlier manual interruption is possible if required.

Advance calculations are made to accurately establish the amount of water and water pressure required in case of an emergency to ensure the water mist system attacks the fire with enough water and during a sufficiently long period of time. The required amount of water to be kept in storage is set on the basis of the largest facility requiring protection. On board ships the system is linked to the drinking water tank or a separate freshwater reservoir. A capability to switch over to seawater can also be built in if a longer extinguishing time is required.

The nozzles are precisely designed to produce the desired atomization. The droplets have a strong cooling action and also expel the oxygen so that the fire is rapidly extinguished.
