INTRODUCTION

Phirex Australia pioneered water mist fire extinguishing systems over 25 years ago. With many water mist projects successfully completed to date world-wide spanning the marine, offshore and land markets, Phirex are renown experts in water mist fire-fighting Technologies.

With full turn-key capability for design, manufacture, supply, installation, commissioning, recommissioning and after sales service, Phirex has the Technology and expertise that you require for your project.

Phirex is located in Wangara an industrial hub 21km’s North of Perth City in Western Australia.

FOGEX® is a superior water mist fire-fighting Technology deploying small quantities of atomised water mist droplets at 100 to 120 bar nozzle pressure to combat fires. FOGEX® has been tested in accordance with IMO Guidelines MSC/Circ. 668/728, MSC/Circ. 913 and MSC/Circ. 1165 for use in machinery spaces and cargo pump rooms and Factory Mutual Research Corporation 5560 Standards for combustion turbines, machinery spaces and special hazard machinery spaces. FOGEX® is approved by Factory Mutual under FM Project Identifier No. 3028884 and was also fire tested in China and has obtained Chinese Government CCCF approvals.

FOGEX® uses up to 90% less water compared to conventional sprinklers and other low pressure mist systems. This means greater efficiency, small size pipes, less clutter, more aesthetic components and easier installation. It also equates to lower capital costs, less overall system weight and less water & smoke damage.

Phirex Australia manufactures a range of FOGEX® water mist nozzles with K-factors as low as 0.23L/min/bar½ to 2.2L/min/bar½ (refer to nozzle data sheets).

Depending on the application, FOGEX® nozzle grid spacing ranges from 3m x 3m upto 4m x 4m with nozzles installed on ceiling level. FOGEX® nozzle installation heights range from several metres high to 11+ metres above floor level. System operating pressure ranges from 100-120 bars for marine machinery spaces and 100 bars for land applications. FOGEX® mean value diameter (MVD) water droplets are in the Class 1 category, ie <100µm as defined in the NFPA750 water mist standard (average 50-65 microns).

SMALLER SIZED NOZZLES:FOGEX® approved multi-orifice water mist nozzles are the smallest and most lightweight available on the international market place. With flow rates of just 2.3 – 22.0 litres per minute at 100 bar system pressure, the volume of water required to extinguish Class B fires in machinery spaces and Class A fires in buildings is minimal. This translates to less water damage with greater efficiency, small size pipes & fittings, smaller fire pumps meaning overall less system weight and cost.

ADDED SAFETYFOGEX® open deluge water mist nozzles frequently undergo in-house pressure testing in excess of 320 bar without failure meaning increased safety to the customer. FOGEX® open deluge nozzles are a one-piece construction and are supplied complete with a Stainless steel filter to prevent nozzle blockage. All FOGEX® nozzles have a 3/8” BSPP F thread.

FOGEX® automatic glass bulb nozzles undergo in-house pressure testing upto 200 bar without failure. Even upto 400 bar test pressure the glass bulb and nozzle components remain intact ensuring extra safety to the customer. ULI/FM/UKLPCB approved thermo-bulbs are used throughout and nozzles can be supplied in various temperature activation ranges depending on application. All FOGEX® nozzles are supplied with internal S/steel filters.

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCEFOGEX® water mist nozzles demonstrate a formidable fire extinguishing capability against volatile fuel fires, such as concealed n-Heptane pan fires and cascading and pressure spraying n-Heptane and Diesel spray fires including concealed oil pan fires with fabric material and wooden crib inside.

FOGEX® water spray flux densities typically range between 0.06LPM – 0.15LPM/min/m³. This means that very small amounts of water are required to extinguish fires. FOGEX® does not rely on gas injection, chemical additives or wetting compounds to extinguish fires like some other water mist systems do.

EASY INSTALLATION & SERVICES NOZZLE MATERIALS MINUTE WATER DROPLETS

Simplicity is Phirex’s goal and this means less component failure and less down time.

All FOGEX® integral system components are manufactured and supplied to suit the hazard requiring protection and to provide a long, trouble free service life. All pipes are of ASTM/AISI316L or AISI304 Stainless steel material and are of compression, welded or ANSI flanged type fittings for easy installation and maintenance. Standard non-proprietary off-the-shelf fittings are used throughout. FOGEX® Schedule 40S or Schedule 80S pipe work follows ASME, ANSI and DIN standards.

FOGEX® nozzles are manufactured from Aluminium Nickel Bronze or Stainless steel materials depending on customer preference and specific applications.

All nozzles are carefully inspected after manufacture and are flow and pressure tested prior to export as per strict Quality Assurance procedures. Both Aluminium Nickel Bronze and Stainless steel nozzles have been environmental tested and approved.

FOGEX® is a Class 1 water mist system as defined by NFPA750 Standards because it produces the finest atomised water mist droplets, ie 50-60µm average.

It is these very fine water droplets that interact in the fire zone and expand some 1700 times their original size. The large number of small droplets entrains combustion by-products washing them to the ground. Generally the mean value diameter (MVD) size of FOGEX® droplets range from 1µm to 65µm as measured by FILK independent testing laboratories. Laboratory fire testing has shown that FOGEX® nozzles have the fastest water spray velocities (ie up to 8.4m/sec) compared to any other water mist system nozzles.

FOGEX® SMOKE SCRUBBING

FOGEX® water mist system “scrubs” the fire hazard area of combustion by-products, such as smoke and soot particles causing them to settle on the ground. This assists with breathing and reduces smoke related damage. Independent laboratory fire testing for prison applications demonstrated that FOGEX® assisted in the reduction of Hydrogen Cyanides and Hydrogen Fluorides inside an occupied cell thereby assisting prison wardens with their inmate evacuation procedures.

FOGEX® quickly reduces ambient gas ceiling temperatures thereby preventing flash-over phenomena and supporting life.

TOXIN REDUCTION

Live fire tests conducted by Chiltern Fire & Research Laboratories in the UK has demonstrated that FOGEX® helps to reduce dangerous short term toxin levels associated with combustion, ie the Hydrogen Fluorides

and Hydrogen Cyanides. FOGEX® nozzles were selected on the basis of performance tests for installation in state penitentiaries to protect cell inmates against fires that may be deliberately lit.

SAFE FOR HUMANS & ENVIRONMENT CONTINUING RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

CONTINUING RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

FOGEX® is an environmentally safe fire-fighting Technology that can be safely used in occupied spaces.

Using only clean natural water without chemical additives, FOGEX® is safe to breathe by humans. This works to good advantage because it can be activated immediately upon a fire been detected without giving the fire an opportunity to take a stronger hold and cause more structural damage. With FOGEX®, air-tight enclosures are not required because all fire testing that has been conducted at fire & research laboratories involved open conditions without any restrictions in air supply. FOGEX® performed remarkably well under these adverse circumstances and can extinguish fires in outdoor arenas, eg electric transformer substations etc.

FOGEX PORTA-MIST®

Phirex Australia was first to invent the Fogex Porta-mist® fully mobile water mist fire fighting appliances.

Fogex Porta-mist® units can be easily mobilised towards a fire and firemen can control and extinguish the blaze without the need to start up a large fixed system. Its functionality enables full mobility to deploy in areas where a fixed fire protection system cannot be installed, eg service stations or refuelling depots, airports & marine terminals and mobile military sites etc.

Porta-mist units are also handy to supplement the main fixed systems and can be deployed at the same time to target a well hidden or shielded fire. A very good example where Porta-mist units are extremely useful is in public multi-storey car parks to combat and extinguish burning cars that are locked up.

Phirex has demonstrated that a 40 litre Porta-mist unit can effectively extinguish 6 motor vehicle sedans that are fully engulfed by flames! This is a very small amount of water consumption.

Applications or uses for Fogex Porta-mist® units are numerous and diverse and several other examples are for use in underground mines and farming communities for tackling brush fires etc. For underground mine sites Phirex can supply explosion proof electric driven Porta-mist units.

FOGEX® PRESSURE SKID MODULES:

Phirex Australia supplies stand-alone pressure skid modules (PSM’s) for fire fighting purposes.

FOGEX® PSM’s and the integral FOGEX® system components are all FM approved under Project Identifier 3028884. FOGEX® PSM’s are also supplied on IMO marine vessel projects and used extensively on Oil & Gas and DPP Offshore production platforms and jack-up rigs etc.

Phirex can offer 3 sizes of FOGEX® high pressure steel internally lined cylinders for use with its PSM’s, ie 50 litres, 67 litres and 80 litres although the 80L size is most widely used. Equivalent sizes of FOGEX® high pressure dry nitrogen cylinders are also offered. Dry nitrogen gas is regulated down by a FOGEX® nitrogen pressure regulator from 200 bars to ~100 bar system pressure.

FOGEX® PSM’s can be either stand-alone systems where it is impractical to install a fire pump system, eg for protection of Diesel generators or combustion turbines located in remote areas. FOGEX® PSM’s can also be used as a “back-up” water mist fire fighting system or used as a “first shot” system before the main fire pumps start, eg for use in passenger vessels.

Phirex PSM’s find extensive applications in the food & beverage industries, eg for industrial cookers and band ovens, fat fryers and kitchen hood systems in restaurants etc. They are extensively used on offshore platforms, drilling jackup rigs, power barges etc and cylinders are DOT/BV approved.
