The Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP Foundation) is a U.S. registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization

Its mission is to combat the epidemic levels of road traffic injuries and fatalities in Southeast Asia and other regions of the developing world. 

Founded in 1999 in Vietnam, its main offices are in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with a branch office in Bangkok, Thailand.

In 2001, the Vietnam Safety Products and Equipment Co. (V-SPEC)/Protec established producing lightweight, “tropical” helmet under new national standards

Projects’ objectives To provide children with good quality

helmets as a proactive approach to protecting them from head injuries

To encourage and inspire children to learn and practice good traffic safety skills.

To improve the traffic environment inside and outside the target primary schools.

To involve and engage the local community and authorities in traffic safety activities

To improve traffic safety awareness and behavior of children in particular, and of the community as a whole

Helmets for Kids

• To present good quality helmets to children from poor families• To equip and train teachers with necessary knowledge & skills

on helmet wearing• To organize outside class activities for children to practice

road safety skills (Quiz, Helmet decorating contest, Play-act and performance contest, Photography contest)

• To coordinate with schools for recording crashes (if any) and monitoring the helmets wearing rate

2. Traffic Safety Education (TSE)

- Curriculum development, in collaboration with NTSC & MoET

- Weekly road safety classes over six consecutive weeks

- “Train the trainers”: to provide road safety teachers with new teaching methodology

-Distribution of traffic safety materials to the parents

- Improve parking area conditions inside the target schools•

3. Walk This Way

1. Improve the safety walk-ability conditions outside of the target schools (Zebra crossing, Rumble strips, “school ahead” signal, parking area inside school for the parents..)

2. Develop “Walk safety” manual for students & training material for teachers

3. Provide the target school with “walk safety” teaching tools: stop hand, street/traffic corner mock-up

PAC1 was proven a highly effective initiative for eliciting support from the public and private sectors and dramatically contributed to national behavior modification in adult helmet wearing.

Child Helmet Wearing Campaign

- Increase parents’ awareness of the helmet wearing in protection of children

- Increase helmet wearing rates of children nationwide with a focus on largest cities: HCMC, Hanoi, and Da Nang)

- Support the Gvt to close the loophole in Resolution 32

Child Helmet Wearing Campaign

- “Little Sheriff” campaign was launched on March 2009 as an effort of AIP Foundation to influence kids in a friendly, interactive way.

- During its six months, the campaign has made a successful impact on both kids and parents in terms of helmets & safety

-Successfully introduced child helmet standard and improved adult helmet standard-Developed a quality helmet approved as the “tropical” helmet-Worked with MoET on a primary school curriculum used in all 64 provinces-Changed perception and behavior of people towards helmets-Our advocacy efforts for a better helmet legislation supported Resolution 32

Over 400,000 free helmets distributed to schools in South-Eastern Asia

More than 120 schools in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos & Thailand

Educated thousands of teachers; parts of curriculum used by MoET

14% fewer fatalities (2008 compared to 2007) 24% reduction in injuries 271 million $ saved

• Identify appropriate local partners in government, business, and within civil society in developing countries with the largest need•Initiate Helmets for Kids programs for children through schools and diffuse public awareness of helmet safety in communities.•Review quality standards. Introduce standards to cover ‘tropical’ helmets.•Work with government partners to create an enabling legislative environment and enforcement mechanism for helmet use.•Build a local factory to produce helmets on a non-profit basis, and employ the physically disabled in the workplace.•Launch public awareness campaigns in partnership with public and corporate sectors.•Announce legislation and enforcement changes as necessary.•Continue education, awareness, marketing. Continue working with government on enforcement and quality issues as needed.
