Era of Good Feelings

• Name for President Monroe's two terms

• Period of strong nationalism– War of 1812 helps united

Americans – Future President Andrew

Jackson wins major military victory in New Orleans against the British

– Star Spangled Banner is written

• Fewer partisan conflicts– Federalist Party dies (because

they opposed the War of 1812 and almost separated from the U.S.!!)

• Economic growth – Roads, canals, and bridges are

built – Growth of industry

• Territorial expansion– Americans moving west – Florida added to the U.S.

Monroe Doctrine

• Foreign policy intended to limit European influence in the Western Hemisphere.

• Warned Europe against any further colonization in Latin America.

• Resulted from the close geographic relationship between the U.S. and Latin America.

• U.S. increased enforcement of the Monroe Doctrine during the late 19th and early 20th century (Teddy Roosevelt)
