Health express showcase A successful health project for Shildon will be showcased in the town’s Civic Hall on Friday 20th February from 10.30am. Health Express, launched in 2012, aims to increase knowledge and awareness of health issues in the local community as well as help people access health services and get support in better managing long term health conditions. The programme aims to help residents of Shildon to live longer, be healthier and lead happier, more ful- filled lives. The celebratory event is supported by the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership (AAP) and also sees a range of community activities to promote health and well- being launched by Bishop Auckland College. Anna Lynch, director of public health for County Durham, will help celebrate the successful scheme by an- nouncing her annual report. She said: “This year my director of public health annual report All the lonely people: social iso- lation and loneliness in County Durham is different to previous years as I have focused on a single issue that impacts on health and wellbeing. Social isolation has a greater impact than physical inac- tivity, obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes per day and it is only by working together in partnership that we can tackle this issue. Together we can and must do more.” Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP is one of 14 set up by Durham County Council in 2009 to help the authority better engage with residents. Cllrs Rob Yorke and Brian Stephens have supported the Health Express project with funding from their neighbourhood budgets. Shadow Minister of State for Health, Rt Lord Philip Hunt of Kings Heath will also be attending the event.

A dull, overcast 14th of February didn’t dampen spirits for the Valentines Day wedding of Alan Glazier and Naomi Bailey. The happy couple were married at St John’s Church in Shildon by the Rev David Tomlinson, after getting engaged in Greece last August. The bride looked beauti-ful as she walked down the aisle to Ed Sheeran’s

Thinking Out Loud, in a Princess style gown with a full skirt in a cloud of tulle. The bodice was strapless with ruched ivory satin and the dress was adorned with organza blossoms and sparkling crystals. She carried a drop spray bouquet and wore a tiara of pearls and crystals. Naomi was attended by bridesmaids Sarah Tomlins, as well as two

of her sisters, Zanya and Karee Bailey. The Groom was supported by two Best Men; his son Alan junior and best friend Michael Bennett, along with groomsmen Leigh Aldworth and Jason Bailey.A reception was held in Elm Road Social Club and the couple plan to honey-moon in Spain later this month.

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon, has a great col-lection of railway vehicles. But the museum is now looking for other collec-tions – large or small – to be displayed at its Local Collectors Day on Sunday 14th June.If you have a collection – whether it’s books or bottles, stamps or sports kits, coins or trading cards – you’ll find the Local Col-lectors Day is a brilliant opportunity to meet other collectors and show off your hard work.NRM Senior Curator of Rail Vehicle Collections, Anthony Coulls, said, “Col-

lecting is great fun! It’s easy to get started, and you don’t need to spend a lot of money. Just choose something that interests you – and you’ll soon see how exciting it can be to search out, then catalogue and display, your very own treasures. The Local Collectors Day at Locomotion is a brilliant opportunity for collectors to exchange hints and tips, and share stories.”If you have a collection which you would like to display at the event, contact the Events Officer at Locomotion on 01388 771445 or email. “I have never heard the children sing so well,” said one of the proud Grandmas at the end of Saint John’s (CofE) Aided School’s end of half term service. Led by Year 4, the church was packed as parents and grandparents joined the 200 children to celebrate together. The Y4 children had spent the previous half term learning with Revd. David the reasons why Christians

have bread and wine at services. They learned that ‘all of God is everywhere’ and told the old story of Abraham and his journey of faith. They then discovered that the cross on which Jesus died was an expression of God’s love, a love that says ‘no matter what, you are special, you are loved’. Having taken the bread and wine for the first time, as a way of remembering

that love, the children then shared it with the other children and adults. An enthusiastic round of applause greeted their final song. Revd David commented in his closing remarks; “Our faith is about our children flourishing, to see the happy smiles, and sheer delight radiating from each child today is simply wonderful – well done year four.”

Tricia Lilliston, 35, of Fir Tree, Shildon, was recently jailed for 20 months after defrauding the public of £2,000 by pretending to be collecting for the Help For Heroes charity. It was the second time that Lilliston, who was reported to police by her boyfriend, had been found guilty of the same offence. She had previously been jailed for four months for keeping £375 she had pre-tended to collect for the same charity at a pub in Nottinghamshire in 2010.The latest offence was committed after Lilliston had used her boyfriend’s surname in order to apply for a fundraising pack and avoid potential blacklisting by using her own name.Prosecuting at Durham Crown Court, Martin Towers explained that the

kit, which was worth £507, was sent to her to allow her to collect money outside Asda in Bishop Auckland on July 5th and 6th of last year. Speaking in the court, Jo Brooks of Help For Heroes said: “This sort of conduct does all manner of damage to the public perception of donating to charity and is a deplorable misuse of our name and goodwill.”Agreeing with the senti-ments, recorder Simon Batiste said: “Every right-thinking member of the public will be utterly revolted by an offence of this type.”John Turner, for Lilliston said: “Not surprisingly the reaction to the offence has been extreme, so for a number of reasons, there’s a need to move from the Shildon area.”

New manager joins the team at Locomotion

Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon is delighted to announce the appointment the new Museum Manager - Gary Campbell. Gary joined Locomotion at the start of January, the first change in the Museum’s management since its opening in 2004 following an £11million project to regenerate the site of the former Timothy Hackworth Museum. Loco-motion is a joint venture between the National Railway Museum and Durham County Council.Since opening, the museum has welcomed over 1.7 million visitors and has hosted a number of record breaking events, such as Mallard 75 – The Great Goodbye, which saw nearly 120,000 visitors attend-ing the nine day event in February 2014.The museum offers an exciting special events programme throughout the year and supports free school visits as well as a large variety of work with external partners and com-munity groups.Gary is the second manager at the attraction and takes

over from George Muirhead who led the team at Lo-comotion for over twelve years before his retirement in October 2014.Gary was Business Manager at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, in Fraser-burgh, Aberdeenshire, for three years before returning to the North-East. His previous experi-ence working in culture, heritage and tourism for Alnwick District, Berwick Borough and Northum-berland County Councils helped him increase income by 300 per cent at the lighthouse museum.Gary said, “I was attracted by the scale of the Shildon job. I thought that if I could get an interview then I’d be pretty pleased. Working at Locomotion represents a great opportunity profes-sionally and personally so I’m delighted to be here. The chance to work in Shildon, with its railway history was something that I couldn’t pass up. “I want to build on what has already been achieved for the museum, for the town and for County Durham. “The museum really punches above its weight

with its achievements and is already known locally, regionally and nation-ally. The potential for the future is amazing”. Paul Kirkman, Director of the National Railway Museum in York said, “We are delighted to welcome Gary to the team at Loco-motion. “Locomotion is a hugely important part of what the National Railway Museum does and I have every con-fidence Gary will build on the incredible successes of Locomotion over the past 10 years.”Stephen Howell, Head of Culture and Sport said, “I am very pleased that Gary has joined the team at Shildon. Locomotion is a fantastic visitor attraction within County Durham and plays a major part in at-tracting tourists into the region as well as support-ing the leisure activities of local people and working with a range of local com-munity groups. “We look forward to working with Gary to further improve what is already a very successful and popular visitor attrac-tion”.

Locomotion’s new manager Gary Campbell was Business Manager at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, for three years before returning to the North-East.

box for a penalty which Lee Scroggins blasted into the roof of the net.Shortly after the goal there was a massive fracas with several players from both sides involved, but remarkably, no one was booked.
