Durham County Council’s Cabinet is to consider seeking the views of resi- dents, carers and staff on Ferryhill Care Home faces closure proposals for its remaining in-house residential homes. If approved, the three- month consultation would consider possible options for the future of Fery- emount, in Ferryhill, as well as Cheveley House, in Belmont; Grampian House, in Peterlee; Mendip House, in Chester-le-Street; and Newtown House, in Stanhope. Cllr Morris Nicholls, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for adult services, said, “The council has expe- rienced significant budget reductions and, as a result, we are looking at all of our services to ensure they are cost-effective and fit for purpose. In the case of our residential care homes, we know that more suitable accommodation can be provided for residents within the independent sector at a lower cost. However, we would not consider making any changes without first seeking the views of those involved and ensuring their feedback informs any decision.” If agreed, the consultation would ask people for their comments on 3 proposals: • Retain the five homes and carry out repairs and main- tenance as required. • Close the homes and seek alternative accommodation for residents at independ- ent homes. Seek expressions of interest from other organi- sations which may wish to take over management of the homes. As part of “The Big Draw 2013”, Chilton Primary School, Commu- nity College and One Point Centre will be taking part in creating extraordinary pieces of artwork for a Community Art Exhibi- tion, which is planned for Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October, between 10am and 1pm. The annual Big Draw event is part of The Campaign for Drawing, which has one aim: to get everyone drawing! Over 1000 organisations in the UK and fifteen other countries participate - offering events for all ages and abilities. A spokesperson for the project commented, “We would love for the Com- munity to be involved in showcasing their talents at the exhibition. “You could either come along on Saturday morning and take part in a free family and community arts and crafts event, where you will be creating some pieces of work which will become part of the exhibition, or if you just want to come and have a look at all the children’s work (which includes our ‘create a scarecrow com- petition’ entries) you are most welcome. “Or, if any members of our community have a hidden talent or have created some of their own artwork, we would love to put this on show at the exhibition. There will also be free re- freshments served on the Saturday. “This is an inter- generation event, and we hope that people of all ages from within our com- munity will come together to celebrate local talent and enjoy our exhibition”. Have a say on garden waste changesResidents in County Durham are being invited to give their views on how changes to the council’s garden waste collection service could work best for them.Last month, members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet agreed to hold a consultation on proposals that would see households paying a £20 annual fee to have their garden waste collected.Members agreed that the consultation would help the council to understand how those opting into the service would like it to

work and how they would like to pay for it.The fortnightly collections are currently provided free of charge to more than 150,000 households across the county between April and November. Those residents who are currently eligible would be able to choose whether they still want to sign up for the service and an addi-tional 35,000 households – which previously could not have their garden waste collected – would also have the chance to sign up.The consultation will end on Monday 28th October.

People can have their say at www.durham.gov.uk/consultation.Paper copies of the con-sultation document can be obtained by contacting Durham County Council on 03000 266 112.

Tenlands Care Home will be hosting a market stall in the village on Friday 11th October, and Bev Poulson, Activities Co-ordinator, is asking residents of Ferryhill to go along and support them. Bev commented, “All proceeds made on the day will go towards our residents’ fund, so we

can continue to buy them birthday presents and to have regular entertainment on the home. “Two of our residents’ families have kindly offered to do this for us in their own time, so residents and myself would like to thank Janet Snowball and Margaret Berriman for all that they do, we all really appreciate it.”

Judge Behrens said it was his duty to stick as closely as possible to the wishes that Romana expressed in her will, and gave detailed rulings on how what remains of her estate should be distribut-ed, but warned the siblings that administration of their mother’s estate was still “by no means finalised”.

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank all those who supported our recent benefit fundraiser, which, was held in The Wheatsheaf, Chilton.

£785 was raised on the night. It was good to see all the Chilton people out supporting one of our own. Our old miners’ banner motto is ‘United is Strength’, and this still applies, well done every one.

Dear Editor,

Following the recent concert (which was a sell-out), Flower Festival and services held to celebrate the 160th Anniversary of St Luke’s Church, we would like to say a very big thank you to all those who contributed their time and talents but especially to everyone who attended and made the two weekends a success!

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

In a letter in a newspaper, Mark Anderson (3rd October 2013) said I pinned the blame on Margaret Thatcher for the pits closures in the North East. I have got news for you Mark, the National Union of Mineworkers did not close the collieries in the North East coal field.

I was a union official in March 1967 when I was called to a meeting at Thrislington Colliery. I was told by N.C.B. officials that the colliery was to close as soon as possible. Within weeks I was told of the terrible news that Thrislington Colliery was to close. I was employed at Mainsforth Colliery. Yes, Harold Wilson played his part in closing Thrislington Colliery and many other collieries, but Margaret Thatcher had the biggest knife, and she assassinated the North East coal field.

I can still remember in the summer of 1968 when I was employed as a power loader at Mainsforth Colliery. The coal face where I was employed was in the low main seam. The coal face was nearly four feet high, ideal working conditions for coal face workers. Then suddenly water started to trickle from the roof of the coal seam, and as the weeks went by, the trickle turned into a flood. Miners worked tirelessly to bring pumps into the coal face, but I can still remember the night when we were putting extra timber supports to the roof. There was a noise like thunder coming from the coal face. The water was so torrential that we were told by the under manager, Mr Bainbridge and the deputy, Tom Parnaby, to run for our lives. The water was so fierce it washed the timber props away.

The J 11 coal face never produced coal again, because within weeks of the water breaking in, I was transferred to Blackhall Colliery. Yes I blame Harold Wilson for the start of the pit closures. But one should not forget the Tory government wielded the biggest axe and sabotaged the Durham Coal Field.

Jimmy Taylor, Linden Grove, Coxhoe.

You can send your letters - on any subject - to The Chapter at 3-4 First Floor Offices, Shildon Town Council Building, Civic Hall Square, Shildon, DL4 1AH, or email [email protected]. Letters MUST include your full name and address, which can be ommitted from publication at your request.

Dear Editor,

In response to the letter regarding the Dalkia Green Fund, in issue 644 of the Ferryhill & Chilton Chapter, I would like to state the views as seen by Durham County Council.

Mr Chapman requested an explanation as to why Ian Bloomfield and Councillor Christine Potts stated at a public meeting that there was only £645,000 in the Green Fund. The actual comments, made a number of times at the public meeting, did in fact state that there was £645,000 available PLUS an ap-proximate additional amount of £12,000.

At the meeting, called to discuss the best options in forming a social enterprise for Chilton to manage the Green Fund, we did not have at hand the exact total that had been accrued, but this was explained to Mr Chapman both at the meeting and by e-mail. The correct additional amount is £14,170.

Durham County Council is committed to progressing the delivery of the Green Fund amongst the residents of Chilton and value the support of the local people in taking forward the social enterprise.

Twenty four interested residents have already undergone specialist voluntary sector training to determine the best social enterprise option, and once established, the Green Fund, in its entirety, will be released to that organisation.

30 Years Experience

Hannah and Taylor at Fer-ryhill-based dance school, New Dance Generation, have expressed their ap-preciation for donations they have received over the past month. The dance school, which meets in Ferryhill Hub, have managed to raise a total of over £500, which has been used to buy a new 700 watt speaker and start their costume fund. Hannah commented, “We would like to say a special thank you to Ferryhill 2000

committee, Ferryhill six, Gary Williams Flooring and Carpets, Dave Athey at Fer-ryhill Hub Bar Bistro and the parents and grandpar-ents of the children at NDG for their kind donations.“We are still trying to raise a little more and we would be very grateful for any more donations.”NDG held a dance showcase at the Hub back in August to help raise the funds, when the children got to dress up in their costumes and show off what they had

learnt since the opening of the school at the beginning of the year.“We are continuing to teach street dance to children from age 2 right up to our eldest adult dancer,” continued Hannah. With the dance school expand-ing there are new classes beginning all of the time.“We would be delighted to see some more new faces too! You can call down at Ferryhill hub for more information or find us on Facebook”.

Ferryhill go down in Extra TimeFerryhill Under 13s went down by the odd goal after extra time in their League Cup Tie. Fer-ryhill started slowly in this entertaining game, and found themselves two goals down at half time. Early in the second half Ferryhill pulled one back through Kieron Richardson

Ferryhill Celtic entertained one of the most respected teams at the week-end in the Durham & District Premier League, namely New Durham in the ‘Pass and Go’ Cup. The result was a comprehensive 2 – 0 victory for the Celtic, who from the kick off played incredible one touch football. After only 9 minutes Andrew Agar shot inches wide, before Fer-ryhill legend Kooman found Lucas Linhart who rounded two defenders and was brought down in the box, only for the ref to award a free kick, which ‘man of the match’ Dan Mitton crossed to Neil Bell only for his effort to skim the bar. Half time arrived at 0 – 0 with Durham not able to create a single chance as Celtic’s back 3 of Mitton, Neil Bell and Peter Robson

Great win for Ferryhill Celtic

Ferryhill Town Youth vs Golden Flatts

in total control. The 2nd half was a continu-ation of the 1st with Celtic dominating play, but on the hour they were reduced to 10 men This seemed to galvanise the team, with James Fox going close on 80 minutes, but the score remained the same at 0 – 0 and extra time was neces-sary. Celtic finally got their just reward on the 20th minute when the impressive Liam Taylor scored from the spot after a hand ball from a Durham midfielder. In the dying minutes the Celtic secured a great win when Shane Todd kept his cool and fired into the corner of Durham’s net for 2 – 0. Celtic’s next game is away to Langley Park, and they will be hoping to continue their incredible run of 17 wins.

Ferryhill Under 8s had a tough game against a strong Golden Flatts team, they all played fantastic but lost 3 - 1 with Will Bage scoring the only goal. Adam Laverick was man of the match. The second game was far better for the under 8s, winning 5 – 1 against the Golden Flatts team with goals coming from Tyler Ingham, Adam Laverick, Jak Readshaw, Jay Purdy

and Will Bage. The under 9s had an out-standing first game against Darlington RA, winning 5 – 1 with a hat-trick from Lee Richardson and two goals from Liam Slee. The team were equally impres-sive in the second, winning 7 – 3 against Darlington RA with a hat-trick, this time from Jack Eltringham and goals from Liam Slee, Niall Smith, Marshall Million and Charlie Calvert.

only for All Stars to regain their two goal advantage. Again Ferryhill reduced the arrears with a goal from Tyler Marquis only for All Stars to score again to make it 4-2. Ferryhill would not lie down and, with goals from Kieron Richard-son and Charlie Hill, took the tie into extra time. In

extra time All Stars struck first, but Ferryhill hit back through Tyler Marquis, but it was to be All Stars Day as they scored the winner in the second half of extra time to cap a disappointing day for Ferryhill. The final scores were 21st All Stars Under 13s (6) and Ferryhill Town Youth Under 13s (5).
