I am excited about the future of Afifi Temple. All indi-cations are that we will be selling our building soon. There is a lot of interest in it and it is priced right to sell. So, what hap-pens next? Our Strategic Plan out-lines our next steps (it will be sent out to the No-bility at a later

date).

We are well on our way to a virtual office operation. The Divan now meets in the comfort of our own homes (virtually on our computers). We are researching loca-tions for our 2016 meetings and ceremoni-als.

Our monthly socials will coincide with the monthly club dinners; a different club each month. Without an expensive build-ing to maintain, our temple resources can be focused towards supporting our clubs and units. Our 2016 budget should have money for public relations and marketing (finalizing the budget now). We will then be able to help the clubs market to their

communities and provide resources for in-formational booths at fairs, conventions, etc. We can focus more of our current membership towards helping the clubs and units with their fundraising. As our membership grows, we can re-establish a temple-wide fundraiser (raffle car?); but this time all the profits could go to our hospitals.

When you review the Strategic Plan, keep in mind the 35-55 year old demographic. Our future lies in this age group. If you are a Noble in this age group, the Divan really needs to hear your ideas. I have yet to meet a man who has seen us in a parade and said “I want to do that”. Nor have I heard that when at a football game, food booth or any other Shrine event. We are obviously not where our prospective mem-bers are. This is our greatest challenge for the next several years.

What this all means is CHANGE. Change is never easy but we can either ignore our situation or embrace the opportunities change provides. I’m excited and you should be too. Together we can craft a better Afifi.

Yours in the Faith,

Noble Ray Zimmerman

Afifi News moves to E-mail and Website

Starting with the February 2015 issue, we will be distributing the Afifi News via e-mail, Facebook and posting on the www.afifishrine.org website. The response to sending the Afifi News electronically has been very positive and has resulted in huge cost savings. Clubs & Units should update their rosters with members e-mail addresses and those who do not have e-mail. If a Noble does not have access to e-mail or the website, they will need to notify their Shrine Club Secretary and have him print them a copy.

Greetings No-

bles, November

is here. The car

raffle is com-

plete, parades

are just about

over and we will

shortly be hold-

ing elections for

the next year.

With that in

mind we will

very soon be

staring a new

chapter in Afifi history, one where we do

not have a building to operate from. We

will be making adjustments and sharing

those details with you very soon. More

than ever we are going to need to rely on

each other in order to continue our great

legacy.

While change is not something embraced

by many it is an opportunity for us to take

Afifi to new places. I for one am looking

forward to the challenges that lay ahead

and look forward to working with each

and everyone of you as we move into the

future.

I am currently working on a new web page

for Afifi one that will hopefully meet all of

our needs as Afifi Shriners. When the

time comes I will be soliciting information

from each of the clubs and units.

Stay tuned and I hope to see you all very

soon.

Patient Transportation Fund Report

Doug Baker - Recorder

The AFIFI Patient Transportation Fund is healthy because numerous of our Nobles several

Clubs & Units and outside sponsors have been very generous. We are fortunate that most

of our currently sponsored children live close to the Portland Unit and require little or no

support from us to receive their excellent care. Our most notable expenses are still associat-

ed with patients treated at Shriners Hospitals far distant from the Portland Hospital.

We are currently sponsoring six Shrine Kids being treated at Shriners Hospitals out-

side the Pacific Northwest area. These kids and a parent require continual support of our

paying major transportation expenses to distant hospitals. The most dramatic issue has to

do with two patients being treated at the Boston Hospital twice a month and patients being

treated at Montreal, Chicago and Sacramento Hospitals several times each year. We careful-

ly monitor the expenses to ensure compliance with our intentions, but even then the totals

can be staggering. The best news is that all the children are being carefully attended to and

are their conditions are improving on schedule. Our November 13-15, 2015 Hospital Trek

and banquet address the Shriners Hospitals for Children and several ideas of their new di-

rections and achievements. Put the dates on your calendar now and plan to invite your fam-

ily and friends. It will be a very informative weekend! On behalf of their parents and guardians and most especially the children:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

HI NOBLES!

I once again bring greeting from Noble President Vic.

History, Car Raffle, Football Game, trip to Shrine hospital

all done, all successful.

Noble Ray Zimmerman reported gross sales for the car

raffle was $50,000. Made a few bucks on the raffle.

We are hoping that our newspaper drive will be on Novem-

ber 3rd at Fred Meyer. We need Noble volunteers

for the endeavor. All proceeds from this will go directly to

the hospital. Sign up with Noble President Vic for times.

Be sure to wear your red long johns, it might be a little nip-

py.

The temple will present the 2016 Strategic Plan for the

Temple at our October meeting.

Nobles and Ladies take heed, November Stated/Dinner

meeting will be on November 12th. December

Stated/Dinner meeting will be on December 10th. This of

course is because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas

Holidays.

A huge thank you to Noble Frank Harju for his work in

getting the newspapers published for our paper

drive. “Thank you Frank”. Thanks also to Noble Ray Zim-

merman for editing the newspaper.

Also thank you to all the Nobles that took part at the foot-

ball game. Great turn out of Nobles from different

clubs and other temples.

See you at Topas…….

AFIFI PORTLAND HOSPITAL TREK November 13-15, 2015

Now is the time to plan to attend a must do trip for all Shriners and their families.

It is also a great experience for non-Shriners, friends, and potential candidates. This is a special event that gives each of us the opportunity to see firsthand the miracles we provide to the chil-dren of our community. We guarantee you will be recharged after seeing what Shriners make possible through our efforts.

Again this year we will again be staying at the Quality Inn & Suites in Hazel Dell, 7001 NE Hwy 99, Hazel Dell (Vancouver, 78th St Exit off I-5) WA (360) 696-0516. On Friday, November 13th starting at 4:30pm, Gateway Shrine Club will be hosting a Welcome Hospitality room at the Quality Inn. On Saturday, November 14th we will depart from the motel at 8:30am to the Portland Shrine Hospital where we will be presented with a very in-formative program by the Shrine Hospital Staff and a tour of the hospital. After lunch at the hospital, we will return to the Quality Inn.

We will enjoy more Gateway Shrine Club & SW WA Clowns hospitality starting at 5:30 at the Vancouver Masonic Center. An excellent banquet is being planned by the SW WA Clowns for 6:30 pm Saturday evening at the Vancouver Masonic Center for all Nobles, ladies, friends and guests. At the banquet we will hear from some of the people responsible for making the Portland Unit one of the finest in the Shriners Hospital network. Banquet tickets will be available for $20.00 per person at the door. Reservations are a must through the Afifi Shrine of-fice for a proper count for the SW WA Clowns.

A presentation will be made to the Hospital Staff reporting our donations to the hospital for the year. We then ask that ALL Clubs and Units notify the Afifi Shrine Office by Nov. 9th as to the dollar value of all food, gifts and monies donated to the hospital during the 2015 year. Motel reservations must be made directly with the Quality Inn Suites in Hazel Dell, by calling them at (360) 696-0516 no later than November 9th. We are looking forward to a large attendance at this function and are hopeful that every club and unit will be strongly represented. Please remember to invite your friends who might be interested in joining with us. Please come out and support our Hospital and our purpose – the Children.

The kids par-ty is from 5-7pm and the adults party is from 7-10pm. We all had a great time last year and will again this year. RSVP to Noble Sam Lantow at 360.481.6730 or [email protected]

Our Fall Ceremonial will be on Saturday, November 7th starting at 9:00am concluding with the fezzing ceremony at

2pm. Following the fezzing will be a reception for the new Nobles and their fami-lies.

Another opportunity to learn just what you make possible as Shriners is Afifi’s annual “TREK” to the Shriners Hospi-tal for Children, Portland Unit, which is scheduled for Nov. 13-15, 2015. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the new-est and most state of the art Hospital in the system. On Fri-day, Nov. 13 at 4:30pm we will meet at the Quality Inn & Suites,7001 NE HWY 99, Van-couver, WA (360) 696-0516. You must make your own res-ervations for the hotel and rsvp to this office for the hos-pital trek Saturday morning and the banquet Saturday evening, hosted by the SW WA Clowns.

I hope to see you at the open meetings in October & No-vember. Please remember to RSVP. Remember, these are open meetings so bring your family and friends who may want to join us our great fra-ternity.

In Honor of All Our Veterans

“From the Halls of Montezuma To the Shores of Tripoli,

We fight our Country’s Battles…” Most of us recognize these lines as the first lines of the U.S. Marine Corps Hymn. The Marine Hymn is one of the most recognized military songs that we associate with bravery and the fight for freedom by the U.S. soldier. As Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11) approaches each of us should remember the words “Freedom is not free” and we should add “Our Veterans paid for it”. The desire for freedom is in the heart of the actions of every American soldier. The soldier has a vision for the people of our country – “the opportunity for freedom”. Through every war our soldiers have been willing to die for freedom. Have you ever sat and considered the adverse conditions our soldiers face in war? Going back to those wars that some still alive can remember: The barbarity of the 72 mile Bataan Death March and the “Hell Ships” in WW II, where of the 12,000 US soldiers captured on the Bataan Peninsula as many as 11,000 perished. The Battle for Iwo Jima and other islands in the Pacific where while fighting for weeks many of our soldiers had little food and no hygiene facilities. The assault on the Beach of Normandy saw the death of nearly 10,000 US soldiers. Then we move to Korea, where many of us had friends, relatives and Brother Nobles who have never fully recovered from their frostbitten feet. While in WW II and Korea air power began to sur-face as a significant part of the battlefield, it took on a more deciding factor in Vietnam. The movement of troops by helicopter, the defoliation of jungles, dropping of napalm, and the endless dropping of bombs from B52’s were a true deterrent to the enemy, albeit at the great risk of pilots being captured when failures or the unexpected occurred. More recently with Iraq and Afghanistan we see the use of drones and some soldiers important to the battle able to fight many miles from the battlefield. In all these wars there has always been the need for the foot soldier sleeping in a tent far away from home or security, not knowing when nor where the enemy may attack. These soldiers know about jungle rot, malaria, frostbite, mud, endless rain, sand storms, and continuous days of 120 degree heat, leeches, roadside bombs, filth and pungent snakes. In many cases the US soldier has had to fight forces that have barbar-ic instincts that displayed shallow advance from savagery. The knowledge that someone back home cares and is praying for them is a powerful force driving the soldier to accomplish their tasks and wanting to return home to their family. Winston Churchill in paying tribute to the Royal Air Force in WW II said “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” We owe our freedoms to the US soldier; the freedom to live, work, worship, and play as we choose. Please thank our Legion of Honor members and veterans for their service and our freedom)

Oriental Guide Must be Selected Wisely Election of Afifi Officers: December 3, 2015

When the members of a Afifi Shriners elect a Noble to the Office of Oriental Guide, they are virtually starting that Noble through the Divan Line on the assumption that he will prove quali-fied for and worthy of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate. Hence it is quite evident that nomination for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, motivation, interest and experience. A Noble can be a great fellow, hard worker; and loyal Shriner and yet lack the basic qualifi-cations which make for a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is un-fair both to himself and to Afifi Shrine in seeking the Office or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy. Each Shrine Temple needs and requires capable, high type leadership. The normal starting point of that leadership is the office of Oriental Guide. The following checklist may prove help-ful in evaluating potential candidates for the Office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking man would be so naïve or presumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could possibly embody all of the virtues, talents and qualifications which are set forth in this check list. Nevertheless the list has practical value for self-evaluation by the Noble whose ultimate aspiration is the Office of Illustrious Potentate and for evaluation of potential candi-dates by the voting members.

Leadership Executive ability

Community standing and influence Financial security Business Sense

Energy and vitality Capable of building good public relations

Good habits and moral character Well-Poised Good Health Diplomacy

Stage Presence Competent Organizer and Promoter

Possess Social Graces

Many temples have placed a definite limitation upon their progress as a result of hasty judgement in connection with the nominations for the office of Oriental Guide. Every Noble is not fit to meet the rigorous demands placed upon Potentates. So let’s be fair, honest and wise in the all-important matter of electing to office only men who are eminently qualified for the job. We all know that with honor comes responsibility. While there is high honor associated with being a Divan Officer, the ensuing responsibilities entail a lot of time and energy consuming work. Eternal vigilance must be wisely and thoughtfully ex-ercised by the voting membership in order to perpetuate a high caliber of leadership.

Nobles, I’ve created an Afifi Google calendar. If you add this “ical” link:

(https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/s7v0snl2rrdg547uom6r0e9p9o%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics) to your Outlook or Google (or other “ical” compatible) calendar, it will include it in your calendar. As I make changes to the calendar, it will then update your calendar automatically. Your calendar program will have a “help” explanation on how to do that. Please send me event additions, deletions or corrections so I can keep the calendar accurate.
