Aermotor's ~irstfactory, built in the fall of 1890 occupied onlythe large building on the right. Aermotor expanded so rapidlythe build!ng on the left was added. In 1892 the one storybuildinq In the foreground was built and covered one acre.

1888 -The Aermotor was introduced. Only 45 were soldthe first year. The new "mathematical" windmill as it wasderisively called by the competitors, embodied all theprincipals learned from previous experiments. It also hadback gearing which allowed the wheel to make about 3~lrevolutions for each stroke, resulting in much greater liftingpower and smoother pumping action.1892 - Aermotor sold 20,000 windmills and the"mathematical" windmill's image had changed from a joketo a true necessity. Aermotor guaranteed its 8 foot steel millto do more work than any 10 foot wooden mill, it actuallywould do more than some 12 foot mills. Aermotor was on itsway to becoming the world's dominant windmill.1904 - Aermotor catalogs listed a wide range ofaccessories, such as hand pumps, wood and metal tanks, equipment for power mills, such as feed cutters, powersaws, corn shellers and numerous specialty items. (Artistrendering above shows plant that covered almost 300,000square feet of manufacturing space). With theirrevolutionary mass production methods Aermotor was ableto reduce the price of windmills to about 1/6th of theprevious price, 8 ft. windmills then sold for about $25 and20 ft. mills for about $300.1915 - Aermotor introduced its auto-oiled windmill whichhad an enclosed gear case, in which all the working partswere continuously bathed in light lubricating oil. Thisdesign reduced maintenance to only once a year other thanprevious weekly attention.1918 - Aermotor's founder La Verne Noyes donatednearly two and one half million dollars to establishscholarships at many colleges and universities for veteransof the World War. (These scholarships are still availabletoday). The largest benefactors were University of Chicagoand Iowa State Universities in Ames, LaVerne alma mater.1919 - LaVerne Noyes dies. Having no direct heirs, he leftthe Aermotor Company to a tax paying trust, with 48colleges and universities as beneficiaries.1926 - "Bilby" towers, named for their designer, JasperBilby, were introduced. This was a tower within a tower. Theinner tower provided an undisturbed instrument platform. This tower was destined to become widely used by theArmy Engineer Corps as well as the Coast and GeodeticSurvey for much of the remapping of this country. Aermotoralso built the first electric transmission towers and weredesigning and building most of the nation's forestobservation towers. Other products during this period weregasoline engines and electric generators.1933 - Aermotor 702 was introduced, featuringreplaceable bearings and screw-type wheel arms. Aermotordealers and families, attending the "Century of Progress"World's Fair, were allowed to camp in the Aermotor factoryyard and eat in the company restaurant.

AERMOTOR WINDMILL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

An Aermotor Windmill that is correctly assembled and installed is virtuallymaintenance free!

(A) Check the windmill once every six months to be sure the windmill is runningcorrectly. This is just a visual check from the ground or from the car.

(B) Under normal conditions the mill requires a change of oil once a year. You shouldSAE 10 or less. The oil should be of the non-detergent type.

(C) Check to see if nuts and bolts have remained tight on mill and tower. Do thisat the same time you change oil, or after a major storm.

AERMOTORWINDMILL

All Aermotors should be well erected so they will be able torender the best service. To insure this, it is necessary for themill to have a good wind exposure. The load must be amoderate one. The windmill should have a clear windexposure of fifteen feet above obstructions within 400 feet ofthe mill. The size of the cylinder and pipe should correspondclosely to our recommendations listed below. Never use a1-inch down pipe for the well no matter how small the cylinder.
