Hello my dear members .....
my family and I went overseas
straight after the Winter Dance and
missed our EA Sunday lunch on the
8th of July. Since my return however, I have
had some great feedback on both events.
I will start off by thanking everyone who
assisted in the organisation and preparation of
what was officially the new committee’s first
dance for the year, the Winter Dance, on the 7th
of July. It was fantastic to receive such
overwhelmingly positive feedback. The venue
was excellent, the layout and décor was
comfortable, the bands Klassworks & Expose
provided continuous music and entertainment
and the company of around 250 people who
were ‘ready to party’ was fabulous! A good
time was had by all! Grateful thanks to our
Functions Coordinator Kay Klass. You have
done a sterling job, Kay.
I understand that the Sunday lunch was an
equally entertaining event with music provided
by the very talented duo of Mel Nerva & Roger
Prior and of course the usual comical antics of
our Sunday Lunch Coordinator Gary Aviet. The
food was magnificently prepared and was well
indulged by approximately 150 plus people
who attended the luncheon. Thanks to all who
played a part in the success of the Sunday lunch.
I believe the talk organised by the Community
Services team was very well accepted by the 40
or so people who were in attendance. The
common feedback is that it was informative
and members are looking forward to the next
forum. A big thank you goes to Kevin De Souza
and his team for organising this event.

The very popular 3 month promotion of NO
JOINING FEE for new members has now
officially come to an end. Over the period we
received around 50 new and renewed
memberships. A warm welcome to all our
new friends and families. I hope you will join
in on our journey to our milestone
celebration of our 25th Anniversary in 2014.
Please remember that our August Sunday
lunch will be held at FORSTER PARK at the
corner of Abernethy Road & Keane Street,
Cloverdale, on the 12th of August. The theme
will be ‘International Day’ since the
Malaysian, Singaporean and Indonesian
National Days are all celebrated in August.
Please come dressed in your best traditional
or national costumes if you like. There will
also be music and entertainment and of
course some wonderful food. So tell your
family and friends to come along.
After the lunch on the 12th of August, our
Sport & Games Coordinator, Graeme
Mitchell, has organised a ten pin bowling
session. If any of the previous sessions are
anything to go by then you wouldn’t want to
miss it….cause it going to be lots of fun!
Check inside the newsletter or call Graeme or
any committee member for more details.
I am so glad to be back and looking forward
to seeing you all at our August Sunday lunch.

Outing
On the morning of Thursday 19th July, 20 AEAWA members and friends, including some school children, visited the WA Main Roads De-partment Traffic Control Centre, in Newcastle
Street. We were given a very informative and lively introduction to the up to the minute com-puter controlled system which monitors and controls traffic flow in Perth and its surround-ings, said to be the most advanced in Australia. The presentation was given by two great pre-senters, Cass and Christine who will be well known to those of you who listen to radio traffic
report updates. From the observation deck we looked down on the Operations Room which resembled a scaled down mission control at Cape Canaveral, we saw live traffic flow on Perth’s freeways and major roads. We learnt that the Traffic Controllers can adjust traffic lights to allow VIP’s and ambu-
lances with seriously ill patients, to have a clear run through traffic intersections, with all lights set to green. This happened at CHOGM, when the Queen and the Heads of Government were given a clear run into the city from the airport. An interesting feature of the system is that if you travel at the speed limit for the road and get a green light at the beginning of the “married
lights” you should get green lights all through that section of the system. The sequence of traffic lights was also explained to us. The light sequence changes at different times of the day, to take account of traffic flows, monitored automatically by sensors beneath the road surface.
After the completion of the tour some members
repaired to Burswood for lunch, to round off a
very enjoyable day, which had been arranged by
Joan Reincastle and her Seniors Committee, par-
ticularly Joan Arklie who liaised with the Main
Roads Department.

Khapra Beetle
This is one of the worst ‘stored-product’ pests. Adult beetles are brownish and 2-3mm long.
Larvae are up to 5mm long and covered in dense, reddish-brown hair.
Where is it found? Originated in India and has become established in the Middle East, Asia and Af-
rica. Introduced accidentally, and subsequently successfully eradicated in the United States at huge cost.
What are its effects? The larvae are voracious feeders on grains, seeds, processed vegetables, spices, herbs, nuts and dried fruits.
Risk to Australia? The beetle is difficult to control and easily transported in shipping containers, vessels or vehi-cles. Their ability to survive without food enables them to be carried around the world. If the
beetle infests our grain exports, eradication will be extremely costly.
Asian Longhorn Beetle This beetle bores deep into hardwood trees eventually killing them. They attack
maple, elm, willow, poplar, mulberry, apple, plum, pear and other hardwood trees.
The beetle is native to southern China, Korea and Japan. If introduced into Aus-
tralia it has the potential to devastate 150 million hectares of Australia’s native
forests. The highest risk of the Asian longhorn beetle getting into Australia is on imported timber and
wood pallets or packing materials or furniture from overseas. For this reason, timber products
from Asia must be treated before being imported or on arrival in Australia.
