Charlotte Brontë and I have a lot in com-mon – we each had a mother, she wasborn in April and I was born in Septem-ber (both of which months come afterMarch), and the greatest commonality ofall, we both write.

Well, actually, I write; she's past her primenow, ever since that Jane Eyre thing. An-other thing: each of us published a mag-azine before we were actually recognizedas authors.

In fact, Charlotte's magazine came up forauction recently. It was her second pub-lication under the title Young Men's Mag-azine. (NC) With a new school year in full swing, it's a good idea for par-ents to stay vigilant against online problems kids can face. Cy-berbullying is one concern many parents have, and with goodreason — it's becoming a more common and threatening event.

“There's an increased danger for rapid escalation of cyberbullying, with participants and their victims growing exponentially,” ex-plains Nimmi Kanji, director of Telus Wise Internet and Smart-phone Education.

The more you know about cyberbullying, the easier it is to preventit. Here are four things that'll help you keep it from happening toyour kids this year, or teach you what to do if it does.

It's more common than you think. Almost one in five Canadianchildren have been the victim of cyberbullying, while one in fouradmit they have said something mean online. That means thatmany more have witnessed it. Your children are not immune.Have you spoken to them about it?

Cyberbullying and bullying are very different. It may be temptingto consider cyberbullying as an online version of traditionalschoolyard bullying, but there are a number of differences. Real-world bullying tends to target those who are less popular, whileeveryone's a potential target online. Similarly, physical strengthdoes not play a central role in cyberbullying.

Keyboard wars make it worse. Because of the nature of digitalcommunication, accurately assessing tone of voice can be diffi-cult, while the inability to see and read body language can maskthe effects of what's been written. “These are what we call empa-thy traps, factors that make it difficult to feel empathy in cyber-bullying situations,” says Kanji. “They can drive and intensifybullying situations rather quickly.”

The law applies. With cyberbullying, “just kids being kids” is nota viable defense. In fact, cyberbullying can have legal conse-quences both from a civil and criminal perspective. Someprovinces mandate school boards have their own anti-bullyingplans and penalties for violations.

You have a generous spirit, but today you may be worried that you've been too gen-erous. If you bought someone a large gift, you might be concerned that you've goneoverboard. It's too late to return it. Don't worry about it too much. Your mate will loveyour thoughtfulness - and your credit card bill won't come for another month!

You've always been practical when it comes to financial matters, but sometimes con-sumerism can cause you some stress. Of course you want to show the special personin your life how much you care, but do you need to spend a lot of money to prove it?Find a balance you can both live with. You don't need to buy a car. A small token ofthoughtfulness would be appreciated.

You're likely to feel pulled in two directions today. You're at a high point in your careerand don't want to lose the momentum. At the same time, you feel strongly that you'dlike to spend extra time with your loved ones. If only you could be in two places atonce! Have you considered telecommuting for the next few weeks? Your family wouldenjoy having you around.

The energy is unusually slow, causing you to drag and your productivity to suffer. There isn't much you can do about it. Prioritize your tasks so you accomplish whatabsolutely needs to be done. Everything else will have to wait until your "get up andgo" returns tomorrow. In the meantime, energize yourself as much as possible withgood nutrition and a brisk walk.

Trips will likely be mired in mechanical difficulties and delays of all types. You'll get toyour destination eventually, but you're going to have to be patient. If you're headingto the airport, be sure to bring a book - a long one - to make the wait more bearable. If you're just heading across town, bring along your favorite music to keep your spiritsup.

Don't take anything at face value today. There's an air of misinformation and misun-derstanding, so avoid gossip. This could be easier said than done, as all the socialevents of the next several days put you in constant contact with known chatterboxes.Be pleasant, smile, and nod, but don't ask any leading questions. Once you get themstarted, these people keep talking!

Visits with friends and family are highlighted today. Regardless of whether they cometo you or you go to them, you're bound to have a delightful evening. This is exactlywhat you need after the frustration of a long day, complete with delays and mechanicaldifficulties. Put it all behind you. Pass the pizza, refill the glasses, and enjoy some de-served downtime.

Your energy could be low today, making this an ideal day to stay in and read or getany paperwork finished. It isn't glamorous, but at least it doesn't require much energy.Any writing you need to do will be clear and fluid. You have a gift, and today it's mag-nified. You should make good use of this auspicious day.

You may feel frustration and loneliness today. All you want is to spend a quiet eveningwith your romantic partner, but you can't find him or her anywhere. Planes are lateand rush-hour traffic is especially bad. Cell phones don't help. Your friend may as wellbe on the Moon. Take heart and know that you're missed just as much. When you doreconnect, the reunion will be electric!

You may feel like the walls are closing in on you. Don't let it happen. Do whatever youneed to do to rejuvenate your spirits and motivation. You may have gotten boggeddown in some rather dull responsibilities or obligations. You're too bright to squanderyour mind that way. Take a break from routine and go for a night on the town. You'llenjoy dancing the night away!

Today could be a strange day as you find it increasingly difficult to concentrate. Thisis unlike you. You're usually efficient and levelheaded. Blame it on the planets. Theirconfiguration is the cause of the lethargy and ennui. Accept the fact that you won't bemoving at your usual pace. You can make up for lost time tomorrow.

You and your loved one might find it difficult to connect today. You're busy with per-sonal issues and obligations. While you have every intention of getting together fordinner, you don't seem to be able to connect. It's frustrating, but keep trying. Whenyou finally do get together, the companionship will more than make up for the wait!

Jokes of the WeekA man was standing in a line at a bank to withdraw cash.

After an hour his turn came and he gave his bank details to

the cashier. The cashier said, "I am sorry, sir. There's no cash."

Fuming with anger, the man rushed to the manager's room

and yelled at him. "You are a big bank and you don't have

cash? Close my account!" he demanded.

The manager pacified the man and rushed to the cashier.

Minutes later he returned and the man asked, "Did you bring

my cash or you are still running out of it?"

The manager replied, "Sir, we have enough cash. Unfortu-

nately, your account does not."
