Salutations!

In October of 1952, the brilliant Eudora Welty wrote a New York Times book review of a brand-new children’s book by E.B. White called Charlotte’s Web. She wrote: “As a piece of work it is just about perfect, and just about magical in the way it is done.” To this very day the story of Wilbur and Charlotte has sold millions of copies, been translated into 23 languages and remains one of the best-selling children’s books of all time.

The magic Ms. Welty speaks about has been sustained through decades. What makes this story special? Fern is a real farm girl with real compassion for the poor little pig she is compelled to rescue, but the world of talking farm animals she visits is fantastic — filled with magic and wonder. Wilbur is a whimsical character always on the brink of discovery, but he also deals with real life-and-death issues. Charlotte is one of the most remarkable heroines in literature — both bloodthirsty and kind. We may not overhear many conversations between pigs and spiders in our daily lives, but the friendship between Charlotte and Wilbur is the special kind of bond for which all of us hope.

There is something homespun and yet sensational about what happens in Charlotte's Web. Perhaps that is part of its appeal. Perhaps our ordinary lives each harbor some element of fabulous spectacle.

As Charlotte says: “After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die.... By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.”

MATT BAUM ( G a n d e r / A v e r y /Car ter/Spectator/Judge) is making his debut on the Alliance stage. Last seen as the Prince (Romeo & Juliet) at Atlanta’s

Shakespeare Tavern, Matt was wearing tights, a cape and an ermine-trimmed crown. He is armed with a rapier-sharp wit and believed to be dangerously good-looking. He is 6-feet, 6-inches tall and 190 pounds soaking wet. He is known to frequent the yoga studios, Form (in Decatur), and Yoga Collective, where he is an instructor. If you are in possession of information regarding his current whereabouts, please record it in detail on the back of a bill of U.S. currency (denomination $20 or more), place it in an envelope marked with a wax seal, and send it directly to Matt Baum c/o the Alliance Theatre.

ANNA CAUDLE (Fern/Goose/Spectator/Judge/US Charlotte) is beginning her professional acting career in Charlotte’s Web. Caudle is in her second year

studying theatre at Auburn University, where she performed in Season’s Greetings, Nickel and Dimed and Lysistrata. She was in John Lennon and Me and Cirque Zamani at the Georgia Thespian Conference. Caudle was named best supporting actress at her high school for Cirque

Kuwa, along with best actress at the Georgia Theatre Conference for Eurydice, which won for best show. Her professional training includes acting, vocal performance, improvisation, lyra, trapeze and body balancing. She would like to thank her former directors, Larry Smith and Renee Denney, and her family for their support.

ANDrEw CrigLEr (Templeton the Rat/Mr. Arable/Lurvy) is a director, actor, teaching artist, movement choreographer and writer. He received his BA in theatre

and performance studies from Kennesaw State University. Recent appearances include A Wrinkle in Time (Suzi nomination, best ensemble) and Confederacy of Dunces (Theatrical Outfit); The Ugly Duckling (Serenbe Playhouse); The Devil Tree, The Theory of Everything (2010 and 2012), The Othering of Mr. Windebaggin, Revolutio: Children of an Idle Brain, (The Collective Project Inc.), Strong4Life and Hands On! (Telltale Theatre). Andrew made his professional directing debut with The Red Herring with the Collective Project last summer and was recently the movement choreographer for Georgia Ensemble Theatre's TYA show Aesop’s Fables. You may have seen him as Hank Williams in Lost Highway at Theatrical Outfit; as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story at Georgia Ensemble Theatre, for which he received the 2009 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical; or at the Alliance in Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. He wouldn’t be here without the unwavering support of his wife, Kirsten, his beautiful baby boy, Gibson and the rest of his amazing family as well as Jody Feldman and Rosemary Newcott. JOSEPH rOBiNETTE (Playwright) is the author or co-author of 55 published plays and musicals. His works have been produced in all 50 states and in 17 foreign countries. Twelve of his works have been translated into foreign languages and another five have been anthologized. His plays have been produced by Lincoln Center, Pittsburgh Playhouse, Goodman Theatre, Kansas City

Repertory Theatre, Seattle’s Fifth Avenue Theatre and the BBC, among others. Robinette collaborated with E.B. White on the authorized stage version of Charlotte’s Web, and he wrote the musical version with Charles Strouse (Annie and Bye, Bye, Birdie). Other commissioned dramatizations include The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Chocolate War and The Paper Chase. He is also the librettist for the musical version of the motion picture A Christmas Story. Robinette is the recipient of numerous playwriting awards including the AATE’s Charlotte Chorpenning Cup and Best Dramatization of the Year for Sarah, Plain and Tall. In 2006, he received the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America Medallion for his body of dramatic works for family audiences.

JODy FELDMAN (Associate Producer) has been the head of casting for the Alliance Theatre since 1991. She has cast more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions for the Alliance including a wide range of classical, contemporary and world premiere dramas and musicals. She has worked with such directors as Susan V. Booth, Kenny Leon, David H. Bell, Kent Gash, Doug Hughes, Gary Griffin, Molly Smith and Andy Blankenbuehler. Since the Alliance is a center for new play development and productions, Jody has been privileged to cast a large number of new plays including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and world premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical and Bring It On: The Musical. Jody also serves as casting director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and worked as Atlanta casting director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tribute in Washington, D.C., and the feature film Charming the Hearts of Men. Jody began her theatre career as an actress and then as assistant general manager at the Academy Theatre with Frank Wittow. More than anything, Jody would like to thank you for being here to share the joy of live theatre with her Alliance Theatre family.

SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001, and has initiated the Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/

Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, created local producing partnerships and has overseen regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked nationally at theatres including the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York, and is a trustee of Denison University. Susan is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

Synopsis

Charlotte's Web is the whimsical story of one pig’s life. The story begins on a farm where a small pig, the runt of the litter, is about to be killed. he is saved from this plight by a young girl named Fern, who names him Wilbur and cares for him. When Wilbur has grown too big for his surroundings, he is sent to live at a farm owned by Fern’s uncle. There he meets an array of colorful barnyard animals. Despite new acquaintances and visits from Fern, Wilbur is still lonely. he befriends a very special grey spider named charlotte. When Wilbur becomes aware that his future looks bleak, he is saved from slaughter by the crafty wiles of charlotte who spins words of wonder into the web. Wilbur and Fern are brought to the county Fair. charlotte and Templeton, the rat, tag along to make sure that Wilbur’s special messages in the web continue to amaze the public. At the fair, charlotte creates one more word to save Wilbur’s life. She also spins an egg sac and passes from life. Wilbur makes sure that charlotte’s egg sac is returned to the barn where baby spiders hatch. Three of them remain and become Wilbur’s new friends. Wilbur never forgets charlotte and proclaims: “it is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. charlotte was both”.

The Junior Dramaturgs at Miles Intermediate School researched circus performers and uncovered these facts:

☞ Performers such as acrobats, contortionists and trapeze artists can make $40,000 to $70,000 per year.

☞ Philip Astley helped create the modern circus. In 1783, he was a performer who built the first real circus in France. The model used throughout the world is based on the pattern he created.

☞ Stilts were used by shepherds in France in flooded or swampy areas.

☞ Abraham Lincoln was a fan of Dan Rice, the first famous clown in the United States.

☞ The unicycle was born from the popularity of penny farthing, a high-wheeler bike with a large front wheel and a small rear wheel.

realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of early-career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers.

The Alliance takes great pride in our multigenerational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade; Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? if so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STArS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STArS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher corps.
