Within ABB’s new family of integratedsoftware and hardware solutions –collectively known as Industrial IT – theABB Symphony™ Enterprise Managementand Control System offers customersa solid foundation for the addition of newIndustrial IT components. Symphony user’sof Harmony I/O, control and communica-tion elements retain all the process securityand existing configuration value of theirnew or existing harmony controls whilegaining the new and innovative features andstrategies fundamental to Industrial IT.

SYMPHONY enhances the real-time sharingof knowledge between related, but diver-gent, enterprise operations. Fully equippedwith an integrated set of decision-makingtools, Industrial IT makes it possible for real-time information to be shared – and its valuecompounded – throughout an organization. The result is better and faster decisions thatoptimize company assets, whether people, raw material, process, or infrastructure.

Open Architecture forSeamless IntegrationIndustrial IT applications are designed tobe used as stand-alone or integrated solutions, enabling the flexibility to implement therequired functions today and the agilityto add on as needs evolve. ABB’s diligentuse of open standards simplifies the taskof interfacing with existing automationand information systems, while the provenSYMPHONY progression ensures anadditional layer of established investmentprotection.

The Evolution Continues…Industrial IT is the latest installment ona greater than 20-year commitment that ABBhas honored with its DCS users. Thecompany’s pledge of Evolution throughEnhancement ensures that future advancesin system technologies will not compromisethe customer’s current investments. Whileother vendors may talk about investmentprotection, ABB’s proven program is trulyunique in the industry. All told, from theintroduction of Network 90 in 1980, througheach of the evolution steps of INFI 90, INFI90 OPEN and SYMPHONY, to the introduc-tion of Industrial IT, this family of systemsrepresent the largest contiguous installedbase of any process automation system inthe world – an installed base exceeding USD$5 billion!

A Global LeaderToday, Evolution through Enhancementhas expanded to include the latest productsand services from the world’s largest auto-mation supplier; including instrumentation, analytical devices, meters, robotics, drives, motors, machines, manufacturing executionsystems, and control products and systems.Backed by common Industrial IT technologyand industry specific expertise, ABB’s automa-tion portfolio provides the seamless linkbetween process and business managementto deliver knowledge-based solutions.

ABB’s Industrial IT with SYMPHONY solutionsreach beyond the traditional boundaries ofdistributed control systems to support theplatform, application and professionalservice needs of total enterprise manage-ment and control.

SYMPHONY’s multi-tiered span of controlprovides a secure foundation with robust, but flexible, base level regulatory andsequence control. Solutions continuethrough the full range of higher level man-agement and advanced control functions toinclude: production management, mainte-nance management, simulation, historian, and network management. The integrationof these powerful features is achieved throughSYMPHONY’s integrated “plant-centric”architecture. Embodied in the principles ofopen, real-time networking, the SYMPHONYarchitecture provides a scalable communica-tions fabric that spans and integrates loop, unit, area, plant, and interplant controls.

Industrial IT with SYMPHONY dramaticallyimproves enterprisewide productivitythrough four powerful, integrated classesof products:

Harmony Series Area Management andControl Products – a comprehensive set oftraditional process, regulatory and sequencecontrol services and I/O interfaces

Composer Series System Engineering Tools –an integrated suite of engineering andmaintenance tools designed to supportthe complete automation project, includingplanning and data acquisition, configurationmanagement, library management, commis-sioning, and operation

Control Products

The Harmony product series consists ofa family of process controllers, communica-tion couplers and I/O interfaces. Thirty-twobit processing, coupled with modularscalability, make the Harmony family apowerful and versatile performer.

Harmony Controllers feature an extensivelibrary of over 240 pre-defined advancedcontrol algorithms and user-definable func-tions. These functions provide the power toeasily design complex control strategies to fitany control application, including continu-ous, sequential, batch, and advanced control. In addition to standard “function code”implementation, Harmony Controllers sup-port batch language, “C” programming andeven multi-variable control. Available in bothrack and block packaging, the multifacetedHarmony Controllers communicate simulta-neously with numerous field communicationprotocols.

Harmony I/O, available in rack and remoteform factor options, provide a wide varietyof input/output and signal conditioningcapability, ranging from standard analog anddigital I/O to specialty I/O like turbinecontrol and fieldbus. Modular I/O packag-ing options and high speed field communi-cations allow for remote I/O distances inexcess of 2KM. Redundant I/O, at thechannel level, redundant power and redun-dant communications provide the highestlevel of I/O availability in the DCS industry.

SYMPHONY’S control products supportABB’s Evolution through Enhancementstrategy by providing backward compatibil-ity with Bailey Network 90, INFI 90 and INFI90 OPEN systems and can execute all multi-function processor (MFP) operations. Also, the addition of Industrial IT components, when used for non-traditional DCS plantcontrol applications such as AC800 formotor controls and remote terminal unit(RTU) operations, complement the Harmonyfamily of products. Data exchange betweenthese areas of control is facilitated at boththe controller and human system interface(HSI) level.DCS Center

To ensure that the SYMPHONY system canbe efficiently configured and maintained,ABB has designed a comprehensive suiteof Composer Series tools. The Composertools provide a visual environment for easyconfiguration of control system strategies, global configuration databases and HSIgraphics, and manage system librariesof reusable software components.

The working environment of Composerfor Harmony simplifies the configurationand maintenance of SYMPHONY systemsby providing a standard Microsoft®

Windows environment, which enablesthe user to easily explore the currentsystem configuration and configure newelements. The use of a common system,or project-wide database, eliminates theduplication of data entry and automatesthe configuration of many interrelated tasks.Composer also provides complete systemdocumentation of the “as installed” and“commissioned” systems.

The Composer Series tools provide twokey features for system configuration. Byutilizing a multiuser client/server architecture, they allow configuration information to beaccessed, created and modified simultaneouslyby different users. Composer’s integratedexplorer presents a single, unified view ofthe SYMPHONY system architecture, andallows the appropriate tool for each systemelement to be invoked directly from thatelement.

Consistent with ABB’s commitment toEvolution through Enhancement, theComposer Series was designed to integratewith ABB’s Industrial IT products, whilemaintaining compatibility with SYMPHONYand INFI 90 OPEN systems. Planned integra-tion with other components of ABB’sEngineer IT suite will allow Composer toolsto further enhance design and maintenanceefficiencies throughout the enterprise.
