Presentation of

OVERHEAD CONTACT SYSTEMS

This presentation will cover the various OCS Types of Systems “in use” and

“planned!”

BlueLine

Original Design - BlueLine

SCAT - Simple Catenary Auto-Tensioned- Limits “I-485 to Tremont Street”

SCFT – Single Contact Fixed Termination – South Boulevard Light Rail Maintenance Facility

SCFT -Simple Catenary Fixed Termination – Limits Tremont to Ninth Street

BlueLine Simple Catenary Fixed Termination System

Original design was to accommodate existing trolley pole equipped Charlotte Street Car, and Gomaco cars.

BlueLine Simple CatenaryFixed Termination System

This included installing switch castings with outside runners to accommodate pantographs

As construction was proceeding Northward towards “Uptown” the cars were re-equipped with pantographs thus deleting the needs for trolley frogs and runners on the out side of the casting, thus slightly changing the catenary

BlueLine Extension

BlueLine Extension OCS

SCFT -Simple Catenary Fixed Termination – Limits Seventh Street to Twelfth Street

SCAT - Simple Catenary Auto-Tensioned- Limits Twelfth Street to University North Carolina – Charlotte

SCFT – Single Contact Fixed Termination – North Yard Light Rail Maintenance/Storage Facility

BlueLine Capacity Expansion

Purpose!–The expansion of the existing

BlueLine to accommodate the use of three car consists!

This did not change the existing SCAT system, but it did provide the opportunity to increase the section of Auto-Tensioning further North to the Carson Interlocking Area plus install 4 substations deleted in the original BlueLine Project

SCFT – Single Contact Fixed Termination

FYI There are actually two distinct areas to this alignment; a non-revenue section connecting the line to the Light Rail Line and second the alignment on Trade and Hawthorn Streets.

Today there are two feeding substations, reconditioned from the old museum line transmitting at 650 Volts DC. The alignment is setup to be fed also from the Light Rail Line if the situation arises.
