The 14th Annual Quran Competition successfully took place on Saturday, 25 June in the Al-Taqwa Multipurpose Hall. I saw great improvements in the various categories namely Juzu Memorisation, Recitation, Hifz, Khutba and Adhan and thanks to the tutors who spent many hours training our students from the beginning of the year. The endless support from parents and guardians has been great and rewarding. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS FOR 2016:

2017, and the school community are very excited about it. InshaAllah, we will have the official opening between February and March 2017.

I N T E R N A L G A T E C L O S U R E SIt has been decided that all internal gates will be locked until 3.10. Parents will be able to access the school grounds after this time. We have found that a high number of people have been disrupting classes and trying to pick up children prior to the bell. Please support us and refrain from knocking on classroom windows.

Last but not least, I take this opportunity to thank the school community for the continuous support and contributions to the College during the Semester.

Dear Parents, Students & FriendsA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M

P O K E M O N G OThis month a new app was released called Pokemon Go. This is a reality mobile game where users are able to physically search and capture reality based Pokemons. We are writing to advise of the dangers of using this app whilst driving and also walking. There have been numerous reports in the media with children knocking on the doors of strangers to ‘get’ the Pokemon in their backyard, people falling off cliffs and the numerous car accidents while using the app. Although it has been suggested that this app improves physical health but you must be extremely cautious when using the app.

T A K E A W A YMany students have been ordering take away during school hours. We have a canteen/BBQ at the College which has adequate food. If students do not like our canteen/BBQ food then they need to bring their lunch from home. Take away orders will no longer be accepted in the administration office.

S C H O L A R S H I P SScholarships close on Friday 29 July at 4.30pm. Please ensure that you apply prior to this time as late applications will not be accepted. Information regarding the testing will be sent to you soon.

E N R O L M E N T SWe still have a few places available for 2017, if you are planning or know of others wishing to enrol their children for next year, please do so immediately to avoid disappointment.

The Victorian Government has recently introduced child safe standards for organisations that work with children. Ministerial Order 870 puts forward the specific actions that registered schools need to take to meet the child safe standards – a new minimum standard for school registration is now set. This is to ensure that all children are safe and protected. The standards will promote a culture where protecting children from any form of abuse is part of everyday thinking and practice in organisations.

The Child Safe Standards are:1. strategies to embed an organisational culture of

child safety, including through effective leadership arrangements;

2. a child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety;

3. a code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children;

4. screening, supervision, training and other human resource practices that reduce the risk of child abuse by new and existing personnel;

5. processes for responding to, and reporting, suspected child abuse;

6. strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse; and

7. strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children.

8. For more information please see the following website (or Google “VRQA childsafe”).

http://www.vrqa.vic.gov.au/childsafe/Pages/default.html

Al-Taqwa College is dedicated to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all its students. A dedicated team (including the Counselling Department) is working to ensure that the standards are not only met, but exceed requirements. We will be updating parents throughout the year as this is still a work in progress – please keep an eye out for information sessions that will be held for parents regarding the new Child Safe Standards.

Year 4-6 NewsD E A R P A R E N T S ,

Welcome back to all our lovely students and we hope this term is just as productive as the previous terms.Since the beginning of this term, upper primary students have been busy spelling their time away in class and during morning assemblies in an effort to be the “last man standing” for the annual spelling competition. The 11th Annual Wyndham Spelling Bee Competition will take place on September 6, 2016. Participants from Al-Taqwa will include 1 student from grade 5/6 to represent the Al-Taqwa in the senior competition and 1 students from grade 3/4 to represent our school in the junior competition. The 2 finalists, whose names will be shred in our next newsletter, would have already received the relevant word list during the semi- final stage that took place last week at the school. More details will be sent home with our finalists soon.

Last term we hosted our first ever Iftar for selected Upper Primary Students. It was a special experience to have students and staff break their fast together. Students enjoyed spending quality time together and were very helpful in cleaning up after the event. Many laughs were shared as well as words of wisdom from our Principal Mr Hallak on the night.

The grade 6 students and teachers are very excited to have received their prestigious Year 6 Jackets which will serve as an ongoing reminder of the amazing times shared together at our second home Al Taqwa College.

In upper primary this term, we would like to welcome a new grade 4 team member, Ms Serpil Gunduz, who is the current teacher of 4D. We would also like to wish Ms Shafni all the best with the arrival of her baby and we hope to see her back with us soon.

As a follow up from last term and continuing into this term, all grade 4, 5 and 6 classes are running circle time activities on a weekly basis that focus on the emotional wellbeing of our students. The circle time programs focus on developing student empathy skills and helping them be more sensitive to their own emotions. These Circle times are also a platform for students to share their thoughts on matters that concern them and provide a chance for students to listen to one another effectively.

Upcoming activities for the Upper Primary Department include:• Al- Taqwa Round Robin Debating Day run by the

Association of Victoria 3rd August.• Grade 4 Taskworks “Forces” Incursion • Al-Taqwa Olympics opening Ceremony for the Soccer

and Basketball Tournaments• Wyndham Spelling Bee• Wyndham Vale Interschool sports Athletics (selected

Year 11-12 ActivitiesD E A R P A R E N T S ,

We would like to welcome all our students and community back to term three and hope that you all had a wonderful Eid with your loved ones. This term will be a very busy term for our VCE students with many programs running to assist students in achieving pleasing results in the upcoming exams.

Al-Taqwa College has invested in running tutoring classes to further extend our students in the areas of English, Maths and Science. All year 12 students will be taking part in the English classes while the highest performing students will be taking part in the Maths and Science subjects. This Program will run every Saturday by external providers called CONNECT Education which commenced on 23 July and will continue for 16 weeks.

ELEVATE will be back with us on 1 September for another session with our year 12 students on ‘How to Ace your Exams’. ELEVATE have already visited us in term two and ran two sessions with our VCE students called ‘Study Sensei’ and ‘Time Management’. The students absolutely loved the sessions with feedback being 100% beneficial and they would recommend it to others.

Our Edrolo Program has been up and running since term one and will continue till the end of the year. Edrolo is an online tutoring program available to students 24/7 that they can benefit from both at home and at school. Payments were due at the end of term two, so if we can please make sure that this payment is met as soon as possible as we are already into term three.

Last term, our year 12 students enjoyed a day out as a pre-Ramadan treat. The girls enjoyed a wonderful day out at The Enchanted Gardens followed by a buffet lunch. While the boys enjoyed their day out to Wyncity Entertainment Centre followed by a lunch at Taste of the Middle East.

During week one of this term, our students also had the opportunity to explore their tertiary options by attending the TIS excursion at Victoria University. The students portrayed the school in a very positive manner and enjoyed the day.
