ACTION PLAN FOR PLANTATION

&

IMPROVEMENT OF GREEN COVER

FORAGARTATA CITY

Background: Agartala is already earned name and fame as the most clean and Green Cityin the North east region of India. Agartala Municipal Corporation envisages Agartala to be

one of the most clean and green cites in India in coming years.

Target: To Plant 50,000 plants/trees in and around Agartala city for next five tears at therate of 10,000 trees per year. Plantation Action plan lays maximum emphasis for variousAvenue Plantations, Roadside Plantations, River slope Plantation, Plantation of beautifulFlowering trees along with shed bearing trees in and around Agartala so as to makeAgartala city one of the most beautiful cities in India.

Celebration of Van Mahotsav: Every year Agartala Municipal Corporation celebrates VanMahotsav in the first week of ]uly. Last year 201,5-L6, total 3500 trees were planted i.e. 100trees for each old ward. After the recent delimitation ward number of Agartala MunicipalCorporation has increased to 49 from earlier 35. Also 1B Sq km area has been added toAgartala Municipal Corporation.

Target of 2OL6-!7: As per the decision by the Mayor in Council of Agartala MunicipalCorporation in the meeting on 20th May 20L6, total 5000 trees shall be planted in andaround Agartala City @ 100-110 trees each ward i.e more than 5000 trees in the comingVan Mahotsav as special drive. For this Mechanical Division of Agartala MunicipalCorporation has been directed to re-use about 1500 old tree guards where the trees havealready grown old and also to manufacture new 1000 new tree guards for which specialfund is being provided. Remaining species of the trees shall be selected in such manner thatit will not be eaten by the stray animals or stolen by the anti social elements e.g. Oleanderof various color which is generally planted on highways and does not require extra care.

Also special plantation of 1000 trees shall be taken up in the 250 TPD Solid Waste

Management Plant of Agartala Municipal Corporation to create a green belt in the area ofDump yard at Debendra Chandra Nagar, Agartala"

Plantation of oils Erosion Prevention Plantation such as bamboo along the bank of HaoraRiver/Katakhal Canal inside Agartala City so as to prevent further erosion of the riverbanks and also to prevent flood situation. Necessary fund shall be made available to ForestDepartment Tripura Urban Employment Programme (TUEP)

As per the decision of authority of Agartala Municipal Corporation in the Mayor-in-Councilmeeting on 06/05/20L6 five [5J mandays shall be provided to each Zone for five days a

week i.e. total 20 mandays in a month i.e. 500 mandays per month i.e. 6000 mandays peryear so that throuout the year care of these plants can be taken up by total 20 speciallytrained gardeners of Agartala Municipal Corporation. Earlier there has been no anydedicated team of Gardeners. The said 20 Gardeners shall be trained in plantation andrelated activity by the Forest Department and Horticulture Department.

Plantation Material such as tree saplings shall be provided by the Forest Department free of

cost or at very concessional rate to Agartala Municipal Corporation. Organic Manure

produced in the Waste Processing Plant of Agartala Municipal Corporation shall be utilized

for plantation.

In the dry season five water tankers of Agartala Municipal Corporation shall provide water

to the plants at least in the first year so as to ensure survival.

In addition to this it has also been decided by the Mayor in Council to take up about 5000

trees, Plantation of Roadside shed bearing/flower bearing trees under the Tripura Urban

Employment Programme ITUEP) where hard-drawn wire made square mesh fencing willbe provided under 350/o material Component of TUEP which runs throughout the year.

Thus the total Target for tree plantation taken up by Agartala Municipal Corporation shall

be 11000[ Eleven thousand trees) in201,6-17 out of which:-

1. 5000 tree plantation will be take as special drive under Van Mahotsav @ 100-110

per ward2. 1000 tree plantation will be taken up at 250 TPD SWM Plant of AMC at Debendra

Chandra Nagar

3. 5000 tree plantation will be taken up in the later period under TUEP of either by

the side of road or by the side of rivers lope/river banks

Before any plantation, expert opinion shall be taken up from the experts of

Forest/Horticulture Departments so as to ensure symmetry and aesthetic sense in order to

give beautiful and befitting Iook to Agartala City in due course of time.

As about 400 hundred trees roughly can be planted in one hectare of land, it is expected

that in 201.6-17 total25-27 hectares area shall be brought under green cover trough the

direct efforts of Agartala Municipal Corporation.
