At the Calgary event we were privileged to have two amazing artists join us and we would like to thank Cher Homersham for doing caricature portraits and Lyndsey Smethurst for doing balloon art for us before the movie. It was a memorable evening for everyone and we hope to do it again. Many thanks to the organizers of the event for their hard work! Lastly, we thank the Calgary Foundation, Neighbour Grants, for sponsoring this Outdoor Film Screening.

We are working on another Free movie screening for Edmonton and Calgary. We plan to show the powerful and thought provoking films Audism Unveiled and Silent Child to the community in January/Feburary 2019. Stay posted for announcements on Location and Date. Please help us spread the word to your family, friends, and co-workers as well.

We look forward to our next ASL Immersion season this summer of 2019. Brenda Hillcox will be our ASL Immersion Coordinator for both Edmonton and Calgary immersion events, with Angela Stratity assisting. We look forward to another year of high quality Immersion events and are proud to welcome these two highly competent individuals to lead our ASL Immersion program this year. Check out our attached ASL Immersion 2019 Flyer and help us spread the word!

Edmonton Eskimos 2018 Anthem Singer / Interpreters At Commonwealth Stadium

This past season of the Edmonton Eskimos Season 2018, these Deaf volunteers were happy to sign the Canadian National Anthem at all home games here in Edmonton, along with support from volunteer interpreters. It was great public awareness for the Edmonton Eskimo fans to see signers using our beautiful ASL. I again thank all the signers and interpreters for their contributions this year.

National Anthem Signers and Interpreters:

Brenda Hillcox with Janice Pietrucha, Vrusha Patel with Laura Everitt, Crystal Wolfe with Jade Martinez, Christine Spink-Mitchell with Brandon Drew, Angela Stratiy with Marty Taylor, Gwendolyn Lathe with Carla Dupras, Dena Ruiter-Koopmans with Laura Patterson, Ashlee Wilson with Alicia Ponicano, Crystal Wolfe with Carla Dupras and Anita Mazzuca with Robyn Sauks.

This years National Anthem Signers were selected based on criteria including: their participation in ASL

workshops and trainings, and their ongoing willingness to volunteer and help with ACSD events.

Here are the pictures of the signers and the photographs were credited to Dale MacMillan.

For the Grey Cup on Nov 25, 2018, Christine Spink-Mitchell was

chosen to do the National Anthem at the Edmonton Commonwealth Stadium with Alicia Panciano, interpreter. It was the first time we have been invited to sign the anthem during the Grey Cup. I am hoping that it will continue in the Grey Cup across the country.

Importantly, Angela Stratiy researched and developed a standardized National Anthem video. This anthem is a high quality translation of the English version while maintain ASL structure and grammar. Credits to

those for their contributions to the translation - Gwendolyn Lathe, Charmaine Letourneau, Kathy Dolby and Christine Mitchell. For their production, support and consultation - Dr. Marty Taylor, Richard Day, Rhonda Day, Sean Bradley. The video is posted on the ACSD website, please feel free to share with friends. On behalf of ACSD, I would like to thank Marty Taylor for sponsoring this video.

Lastly, I would like to thank Edmonton Eskimos for having our signers and interpreters to perform O'Canada in ASL.

Thank you all again, we look forward to continuing this program in the season 2019. See you next year, Sandra Reid

“My hands, My Language”

Poem written by Sarah Rose Snively (Saumier)

my ears are nothing but my eyes are everything I see lips moving and there is always no sound straining to focus to try to read silent words my mind becomes muted in the background

words are tongues and tongues are words they flicker quickly, they come and go like a flame never quite staying still and it burns when I try to touch it they do not communicate the language that I flourish upon the scales are all tipped their way they must be them and it is theirs we must be us and it is ours but we don’t understand each other years of practice and years of trying gave me the ability to speak to be understood- but I cannot understand others not all the time. sometimes not even at all. they can never truly understand me because I am me and it is mine my hands belong to me to communicate to express to love on others to be my voice is foreign to me I can feel it in my chest and in my throat I know it comes out of my mouth because I feel it crawling out but I am never confident that it says what I want it to say not like how I trust my hands. they don’t betray me. my voice does it makes me feel inadequate, incomplete, not enough

the world is not always just-we all know this but I must accommodate to it in order to survive I have to try, to make life easier. but truly, for whom is that intended to contrive?
