ACCENTS FORTNIGHTLY PUBLICATION - NOV 29 - DEC 12, 2019 Dear Residents, Thanksgiving is a special time of year, and we hope all are enjoying the holiday, family, and friends. With the Manor “NO TIP, NO GIFT” policy, this is also a very good time to remember our wonderful and dedicated Manor staff. We have had an amazing start to the 2019 Employee Appreciation Fund! We have received 82 gifts as of November 21 and hope, in time, that all residents will show their appreciation at their comfort level. The gifts are confidential, and we know some gifts come from couples and others from single donors. There is obviously lots of time remaining; however, the Manor is only able to distribute funds by the Holidays if they have been received by December 13. By the end of the year, we hope to reach one hundred percent participation. We can then make a meaningful gift to our employees to show our appreciation for the comfort they bring into our lives. Residents will receive an acknowledgment of their gift from the Manor Business Office. Thank you all for your support. Extra envelopes and donor requests are located by the collection box at the Reception Desk. Jack Enbom, Annual Appreciation Fund Chair ANNUAL APPRECIATION GIFT FUND 2019

CVM Foundation Update If you have looked at the bulletin board or at the easel in the lobby where Jack is climbing the beanstalk, you will notice he is getting higher and higher toward his goal. With the end of the year approaching, he just might get way up there when the people who give stock to the Foundation Fund know

• no capital gains apply and • the tax deduction one gets is for what the stock is

worth now! …or when people who send a donation from their IRA account know the money is not taxed and the deduction is for the whole amount. With all of that, just watch Jack speed up those vines!

In my apartment there is a basket placed with care on an antique cobbler’s bench in front of my couch. And in that basket reside my prized collection of “remotes.” I am proud to tell you they are five in number, plus a new one courtesy of Comcast, our friendly Internet provider. Across the room stands my television set. To be truthful, my TV is not only old but of undoubted foreign extraction. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese - who knows?… but of one thing I am sure, it does not understand the English language. And to my everlasting regret, between my remotes and my television there is no friendship, none whatsoever. Now let me explain how all this remarkable

collection performs. First, one has to have a special internet plug in the wall. Then one should acquire a router plus a modem to make our computers and TVs perform their multiple tasks. That marvelous router (don’t ask me what that means) avoids wires running under and over the bed, through doors and windows, across the bedroom and living room, not to mention the kitchen and bath. By some miracle of electronics, my router sends signals through the atmosphere to all my rooms plus my neighbors on all sides. As for modems, I’m told that my former was at least 30 years old, so those helpful folks from Comcast just installed a new one - no charge. Ha!! This little beauty is HD compatible, by which ….. but I digress! This story is not about my modem or router; it is about my astonishing remotes. First, let me tell you, my remotes live up to

their name. They are often secluded, inaccessible,

unsociable, withdrawn, unforthcoming, and unfriendly. By which I mean, I frequently can’t find the damn things. There’s one for my TV, one for my DVD player, one for my streaming device (ROKU by name), one for my radio/CD player, one for the light under my favorite painting, and lastly my new one that I’m told will even

flush my toilet. My remotes come in all

shapes and all sizes. Some are long, some are short. Some are thin, some are fat. They are covered with buttons, arrows, and red and green lights. (So you can find ‘em if one gets lost under the couch.) They are uniformly black or gray, showing no imagination or

flair for fashion on the part of the children who design these clever devices. They are silent. They tell you nothing about how they work, which buttons to push, or where to find them. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. Naturally, there are no instructions. (Where are my grandchildren when I need ‘em?) In conclusion (and to be mercifully brief), I

have a love-hate relationship with my remotes. I can’t live with ‘em, and I can’t live without ‘em. Perhaps a smart little robot might solve my problems ... but do they come with directions? I doubt it. Dear friends, technology is passing me by. If the truth must be told, I’m just gettin’ too old!

Will Furman offers us an exhibit of his work in photography on display in the Hall Gallery. We are, of course, just getting used to his most contemporary pieces, those reflecting and distorting the world we live in. Slick glass surfaces reflect and transform our 3-D world and offer a whole new view of the city, town, or familiar work environment. He has chosen to include some of his earlier photos, shots of a workman’s tools in familiar black and white, means of transportation involving cars and rails, birds in the wild, and a wonderful picture of a reflection in the forest. This adds up to looking backward and remembering some of Will’s earlier works.

He is tuned in to the current frequency, or maybe it’s a vibration, to look closely at our environments, green, built, reflective, booming, or broken down. We live here. These photographs may well be called environmental and do represent concerns that are very much with us. I would include his earlier work, the majesty of mountains and the vast reaches of the wild. This is retrospective. For those of us who have just arrived here, perhaps it would be good to know that Will originally went out into the wild alone and sought exceptional views of Yosemite and did produce large black and white photographs that are much appreciated. His new work involving reflection and cities makes us take a close look at that which we value, from where we walk to the air we breathe. Fortunately, he shows us both what is and what might be. Keep looking and be glad we have Will around to demonstrate slick and the work it took to get started.
