COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA ACADEMIC WARNING/PROBATION WORKSHOP ABSTRACT The Academic Success Warning/Probation Online Workshop (ASOW) is an online, interactive video workshop created as a tool for students on academic warning and probation. Through a series of reflection exercises, students are empowered to learn how to improve their academics and are exposed to academic resources. The ASOW includes a video and workbook that assists students in understanding the CSN Academic Warning and Probation policy, aids students in identifying key barriers that impeded their academic success, and assists students in developing an action plan leading to academic success. The ASOW revolves around two intervention pillars: 1. RETENTION 2. PERSISTENCE CONCERNS • Previously students placed on academic warning/probation were not required to meet with an academic counselor/ advisor; it was merely recommended. • There was a recognition that students needed more guidance and that it needed to be mandated; students do not do “optional.” • Mandatory in-person appointments with an academic counselor/advisor is ideal; however, given the high caseloads and other mandatory initiatives requiring a meeting with an academic counselor/advisor is not a feasible solution. (There are 24 academic counselors/advisors and approximately 2,500 students on academic probation.) • Many students placed on academic warning/probation do not seek counseling prior to enrolling which may be a contributing factor in eventual placement on academic suspension affecting retention and persistence rates. BACKGROUND • Two pilot studies were conducted: First Pilot – spring 2015 included 148 students on academic warning/ probation ~ Business Management, Accounting, Welding and Transportation majors Second Pilot – summer 2015 increased participation to 1702 students on academic warning/probation ~ all Career & Technical Education (CTE) majors • Due to the overwhelming success of the ASOW, Faculty Senate approved a revision to the Academic Warning/Probation/Suspension policy requiring mandatory completion of the ASOW for all students on academic warning/ probation. 4/27/15 ASOW COMMITTEE Diona Williams, Coordinator - Career and Technical Education Specialist Shawn Claxton, School of Business, Hospitality and Public Services Counselor Luis Ortega, School of Business, Hospitality and Public Services Counselor Amy Palmer, School of Arts and Letters Counselor Gabriel Rodriguez, School of Education, Behavioral and Social Sciences Counselor Constance Shaw, School of Health Sciences Advisor OBJECTIVES Identify barriers and specific challenges • Introduce academic resources • Learn effective study strategies and techniques • Encourage and motivate • Set appropriate goals • Tips for semester planning • Encourage follow-up with an academic counselor/advisor 1ST COHORT 2ND COHORT 92% COMPLETERS 1000 COMPLETERS 58% INCREASE CUM GPA 356 NON COMPLETERS 46% 2.0 HIGHER GPA OFF OF PROBATION 346 FINANCIAL AID ISSUES & WILL NOT BE RETURNING 148 1702 (Out of 1356) ACADEMIC SUCCESS WARNING/PROBATION ONLINE WORKSHOP (ASOW) HIGH POINTS PROCESS • STEP 1 Student receives written notification of registration hold from Registrar’s Office and via MyCSN with step-by-step instructions on how to successfully complete the ASOW in Canvas • STEP 2 Student completes the ASOW, a brief quiz, and a survey • STEP 3 Student’s REGISTRATION HOLD is automatically removed within 48 hours after successfully completing the quiz • STEP 4 Student is recommended to schedule an appointment with an academic counselor/advisor MEASUREMENTS • Data collected will include reenrollment and academic suspension numbers as well as other contributing factors for failure to reenroll (e.g., holds, past due balance, excess credit fees, financial aid, etc.). • Retention will be measured by reenrollment numbers and change in GPA. • Results of the ASOW will be assessed over one additional academic year. ABSTRACTThe Academic Success Warning/Probation Online Workshop (ASOW) is an online, interactive video workshop created as a tool for students on academic warning and probation. Through a series of reflection exercises, students are empowered to learn how to improve their academics and are exposed to academic resources. The ASOW includes a video and workbook that assists students in understanding the CSN Academic Warning and Probation policy, aids students in identifying key barriers that impeded their academic success, and assists students in developing an action plan leading

to academic success.

The ASOW revolves around two intervention pillars:

1. RETENTION 2. PERSISTENCE

CONCERNS• Previously students placed on academic warning/probation

were not required to meet with an academic counselor/advisor; it was merely recommended.

(There are 24 academic counselors/advisors and approximately 2,500 students on academic probation.)

• Many students placed on academic warning/probation do not seek counseling prior to enrolling which may be a contributing factor in eventual placement on academic suspension affecting retention and persistence rates.

BACKGROUND• Two pilot studies were conducted:

– First Pilot – spring 2015 included 148 students on academic warning/probation ~ Business Management, Accounting, Welding and Transportation majors

– Second Pilot – summer 2015 increased participation to 1702 students on academic warning/probation ~ all Career & Technical Education (CTE) majors

• Due to the overwhelming success of the ASOW, Faculty Senate approved a revision to the Academic Warning/Probation/Suspension policy requiring mandatory completion of the ASOW for all students on academic warning/probation. 4/27/15
