LOVE JANIS JOPLIN One of the most misunderstood artists of her time, Janis Joplin was the vocal powerhouse of her generation and still continues to inspire female artists today. Her final album, PEARL, was released after her untimely death. At 27, she had set the Blues world alight with her soul, her voice like no other. The album went straight to number 1 and has since been placed in the Top 10 Albums Made By Women (NPI). We owe so much to Janis, her rejection of celebrity culture, keeping her feelings true to herself, standing up for freedom of speech. We can all learn from Janis. Let’s celebrate her voice, her power and her blues as after all she has a little piece of our hearts.

LOVE MAN: OTIS REDDING
Otis Redding, one of the Greatest Soul Singers of all time died 50 years ago this year at the tender age of 26. His untimely death was devastating. He was riding the wave of success performing at popular clubs like the Whisky a Go-Goand toured Europe, performing in London, Paris and other major cities. He also performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Shortly before his death he recorded his most famous ‘(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay’ which became the first posthumous album to reach No.1 on the UK Albums Chart. He also received many posthumous accolades including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

SOUL MAN: ISAAC HAYES Late soul legend ISAAC HAYES: Renowned for being one of the most influential artists of the 1960’s and 70’s. He pioneered the Memphis Soul Sound through his work with Stax-Volt Records. Not only was he a successful artist and songwriter in his own right, he also produced albums for other artists. His unique sound paved the way for the Disco movement and also the evolution of rap and Hip Hop.

THE SPIRIT OF MEMPHIS On 22nd September, a four CD Compilation titled, ‘The Spirit of Memphis’ (1962-1976) will be released. It will feature songs that Hayes produced and/or wrote for various artists on Memphis’ STAX label. The album will include classics like ‘Soul Man’ and will also feature his chart topping and award winning 1971 ‘Theme from Shaft’. This award winning Blaxploitation movie arguably cemented his reputation and career and has since became synonymous with black urban cool.
