AFTER SCHOOL GROUPS Bible Study:

extra-curricular social group that will look at
different bible stories and how they can af-
fect our lives today. We will be providing
afternoon tea for the students involved and
ask that students bring food with them as

group requires the student to keep up to date
with assessment, and following the schools
core values of Being Safe, Being Responsi-
ble, Being Respectful and Being a Learner.
Your child is required to bring with them
food to share with the group, however if this
is not possible it is not essential.

PRINCIPALS REPORT We are heading into a
very important time for
students with end of se-
mester exams and report-
ing. It is important that
students of all year levels
make their assessment a
priority and put aside time
to prepare and revise so
that they can achieve the
results they are capable
of. Teachers are always
available to provide extra
tuition during lunch and
after school so please take
advantage of the extra
help so that you are fully
prepared for their exams.
Next week our Biology
students and their teacher,
Mrs Leilani Potroz, will
be heading off on a week
long excursion to North
Keppel Island to complete
an Extended Experimental
Investigation as part of
their studies. We wish
them the best and I am
sure that the class and
Mrs Potroz will represent
the school well during
their time.
During week 10, last
week of school, year 10
students will be partici-
pating in Work Experi-
ence as part of their Cer-
tificate II Work Practices
studies. They will be ex-
periencing what it is like
to work in their chosen
industry and be a part
of the work force. Stu-
dents will be using the
experience to discover
if the career they are
interested in is the one
that they would like to
follow into after com-
pleting their school
studies. It is a great
opportunity for students
as they get to see what
it is like to have to go to
work every day!
Finally, we are moving
ahead with great speed
towards our preparation
for the inclusion of
Year 7 into high school
next year. All staff
have been participating
in Junior Secondary
Training which looks at
pedagogies within the
classroom that best
suits the Junior Second-
ary mind with regards
to high impact learning.
The focus has been on
revising our classroom
practices and identify-
ing what procedures
and structures will work
best within the Junior
Secondary classroom.

Long-term Goals (By the end of Term 4): To purchase more wheelie bins for use on the school oval and manual arts MPA as well as Positive Learner Rewards Program for all students. The student representative council have identi-fied a couple of fundraising activities that they would like to undertake throughout Term 3 to support these activities. They are requesting to hold a School Cent Sale as well as State of Origin Free Dress Day for Match 3.
ROCKY RIVER RUN The Rocky River Run is a Rotary Club of Rockhampton activity that is held every year to raise money for Youth Suicide Prevention within our local community. Among the thousands of runners this year were a small group of Mount Morgan Rep-resentatives. Students participating in this year’s run were Samuel Klower, running a long 10kms, as well as Corrina Gasler and John Turner running the slightly shorter 5km track. Also participating this year were some staff, Mark Leon (PE Teach-er), Amy Johnston (HOD – Junior School) and myself (HOD – Senior School) tested our skills on the 5km track. This was a challenging and enjoyable event that I hope we can have a higher involvement in in the coming years.

National and International efforts for World No Tobacco Day on 31 May. Drug
ARM Australasia and National and International would like to emphasise that:
We understand the tobacco dependence is an addiction
Quitting tobacco is a challenge but possible
Counselling and other support can double or even triple a person’s chance of suc-
cess
Most smokers attempt quitting several times before they quit for good
Supporting someone who wants to quit increases his or her chance of success “The World No Tobacco Day is on 31 May 2014 and Drug ARM supports the
goals of this year’s campaign – to contribute to protecting present and future gener-
ations not only from the devastating health consequences, but also from the social,
environmental and economic effects of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke,”
said Dr Dennis Young, Chief Executive Officer, Drug ARM.
“Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death globally and is currently
responsible for 10% of adult deaths worldwide.”
“As part of our prevention program Drug ARM provides fact sheets which contain in-
formation on short-term and long-term dangers of tobacco smoking, and encourage
people to reach out and take a step toward quitting.”
“Drug ARM treatment programs assist people on their journey to quit smoking suc-
cessfully, as we continue to work toward a tobacco free society,” Dr Young added.
Drug ARM is a specialist, non-government alcohol and other drug agency which is
committed to reducing harms associated with alcohol and other drug use. Drug ARM
is one of the merged entities under Healthy Options Australia, alongside Mental
Health Association QLD and the Australian College of Community Services.

tions using it to help them quit smoking. Its value as a health program has been recognised through the
community's reviews on iTunes and Google Play, by the industry through two nominations in the 2013

Spark Engineering Camp – Brisbane 30 June – 5 July
Students from Years 10-12 were given the opportunity to apply for Scholarships to attend the Spark Engineering Camp being run during the first week of the June school holidays. Spark Engineering is a camp run by Youth Without Bor-ders, who give University experi-ences to students who face barriers or challenges in undertaking higher education. There were 13 students who put in applications with 7 being successful and 4 others on the re-serves list should applicants not ac-cept their scholarship. The scholar-ship covers all costs associated with the residential camp, including flights to and from Brisbane. The camp is being held at the St Lucia Campus of the University of Queensland and they will partici-pate in activities all over Brisbane and will even complete a Storey Bridge Climb. This is a fantastic re-sult for Mount Morgan State High School as there were only 100 scholarships offered Australia-wide. Congratulations to those successful in being awarded a 2014 Spark En-gineering Scholarship: Year 10 – Joseph Portch Year 11 – William Holden, Tyler Jones, Isobella Rudolph, Kain Campion, Dylan Roberts Year 12 – Nicholas Stock We look forward to hearing about your experiences when you return.
Last Thursday three Yr. 10 students took
part in the Toolkit for School Kids Program
in Biloela. This program was put together
by the Queensland Minerals and Energy
Academy and Gagal Best Training Centre.
The students participated in a range of ac-
tivities, including pulling apart and putting
back together a motor, setting up a series
of electrical switch boards and practising
their welding skills. The students, Roeshell
Mitchell, Cody Curtis and Takiah Grant
learnt some valuable skills and networked
with a number of representatives from An-
glo-American and Callide Mines as well as
other local tradespeople. The students rep-
resented themselves and the school im-
peccably and as their teacher I was so
proud of them. Takiah Grant went beyond
expectations when without prompting she
got up and thanked the Program organis-
ers for the opportunity that the Toolkit for
School Kids Program offered all the stu-
dents. The students came away from the
day tired but excited about the opportuni-
ties that the Queensland Minerals and En-
ergy Academy and Gagal can provide for
them in the future. http://www.qmea.org.au/

WELLBEING FOCUS: Self-esteem
For young people to successfully ne-
gotiate the challenges of adoles-
cence and schooling they require a
healthy sense of self- esteem and
self-confidence. Cultivating resilient
habits and positive growth mindsets
in our students is something that we
need to focus on in our every action
and every word every day to ensure
they develop a belief in their self worth
and value as a person. We need to encourage conversations
and activities at home, at school and
in the community about understanding
the importance of feeling good about
themselves and then more important-
ly doing good things as a conse-
quence. This will enable them to look
life in the eye and develop as young
adults with spirit and confidence.
Role modelling and using positive
reinforcement in all of your interac-
tions with your children is a sound
platform for them to consistently ap-
proach everything they do positively. While it is perfectly natural for them to
experience self-doubt, we need to as-
sist them in managing these thoughts.
Being always on the lookout for
warning signals that their self-esteem
is declining and then acting to reme-
dy it, will keep their wellbeing in fine
tune. Some alarm bells
include: a reluctance to try new things.
adopting a ‘victim’ mentality of blaming others for their perfor-mance.
losing their assertiveness, ‘shine’
and presence as people and stu-dents.
feeling that their best isn’t good
enough.
being obsessed with unimportant and irrelevant things.
becoming temperamental and
thinking inconsistently.
not enjoying the challenge of striving to continually make their best better.
preferring to be alone more than
usual and on social networking excessively.
As soon as we begin to notice any of
the above, we need to act immedi-
ately to assist and coach them to ad-
dress the causes to their loss of self-
esteem and self-confidence. It’s all
about helping them to not only ‘do
the right thing’ but also ‘do the thing
right’.
“As is our confidence, so is our ca-pacity.”
