FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

We are half way through the term and it is a delight to see the engagement and energy that students are demonstrating, as they near the end of class projects and work programs. Several classes have tackled business enterprise projects and experienced the challenges of real–life learning and business management.

At our last assembly, Miss Taylor’s Year 3 class shared their work in coordinating the Woolworths Earn and Learn sticker program. This developed into a huge undertaking, involving collecting and counting the stickers, then surveying students and staff to decide which items to buy. Everyone is enjoying playing with the new sports equipment and using the conferencing table purchased. Accolades to Miss Taylor and Room 10 for taking on this project.

As part of their Economics and Business studies, Room 14 and 17 students have produced, marketed and costed products. They are holding market stalls to sell their items for $1 each on Tuesday and

Thursday, this week and next week. It is great to see the interest this initiative has created, with stalls selling out of all of their day one products. Students are eagerly waiting for the next market day and the whole new range of products which will be on sale. This project has given students real–life learning experiences, including profit and loss accounting processes! Congratulations Mrs Stewart, Mr Rakuscek and the students in Rooms 14 and 17.

Teachers spend a lot of time forming classes and take into account academic and social/emotional factors to ensure the best ‘fit’ for each child. We will be forming some multi-year level classes. In our placement requests, some parents have expressed concern with ‘split’ classes. Research has shown that children in multi-year level classes perform academically as well as their peers in ‘straight’ classes and their social skill development is enhanced. Teachers in multi-year level classes cater for each year level, ensuring appropriate curriculum is covered and moderate student work samples against those of similar year levels.

MUSIC NEWS

Just a reminder to students and families that students in the Junior Choir, Senior Choir and School Band still have rehearsals this Term. Participation in these groups is a year long commitment and all groups have performances this term that they are preparing for.

It would be greatly appreciated if all students could be at rehearsals on time and ready to start, as we move into this busy part of the year full of performances. It would be great to finish the year showcasing the amazing progress all these groups have made over the course of the year, but for this to happen, we need to continue to put in the same amount of hard work and maintain high expectations of ourselves.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Report by Abigail, Room 16

The School Board held a public meeting on Monday 4th November and were delighted to receive an update on the

excellent results our students achieved in NAPLAN testing this year. Despite some glitches with the newly rolled out online testing, our Year Three and Year Five students exceeded the Australian, State and like school averages across all areas of testing. Fantastic results are a reflection of the high quality teachers and teaching programs at Bannister Creek.

The Board received an update on the success of the new BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative (including the fact that there were no breakages or losses of devices this year!) and the expansion of the BYOD program to include Years 2-5 students in 2020. We were also advised that the Department of Education recently announced one-off funding for school maintenance and funds received by our school will be spent on new carpets for 7 classrooms, resurfacing and line marking of the basketball courts and professional cleaning to high ceilings and alcove areas.

One of our community members, Jodie Wyatt informed us of her meetings with Baldja Waangkiny and the Board were very interested to hear of the leadership and initiatives the parents of our Aboriginal students are providing. Finally, the Board was advised of the upcoming 2020 Public School Review which will take place in first term next year. The School’s self-reflection processes and progress against the Business Plan are audited at this time.

The last meeting of the Board for 2019 will be held on Monday 9th December at 3:30pm in the school staffroom, as

always you are welcome to observe the meeting.

We understand that parking around the school can be difficult at peak pick up and drop off times, and remind parents that they are able to use the parking area at Woodford Park, just a short walk across the school oval.

P&C NEWS

The students from Pre Primary to Year 2 enjoyed a day of activities and learning in the great outdoors last Thursday 7

th November. The students enjoyed a range of activities

including, cubby making, boat creation and floating, scooting, water painting, box painting and a scavenger hunt in our very own Moort Boodja garden. The day was enjoyed by all and described by some, as their best day at school ever!

Our Kindergarten students participated in an outdoor classroom day on Monday and Tuesday this week. They were joined by a group of local three year old children from the Milestones Early Learning Centre. The kindergarten students experienced a range of fun-

filled activities and learning experiences outside, including spray painting, sandpit cooking and creating with colourful sand and water, bubble blowing and flower craft, just to name a few.

The students in the kindy yellow groups were also treated to a visit from Heather Robbins, Simple as Pi Yoga, (mum of Luke and Zoe) who ran some yoga sessions with the Bannister Creek and Milestones students as a part of our Early Centre Network. This network supports early learning centers and schools to network and connect. The yoga was themed around the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and gave the students an opportunity to stretch their bodies and practise some mindfulness.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY

The Year 3 students from Rooms 10, 11 and 13 had an out-door classroom day too! The students took part in balloon relays, dancing activities and sketching using their iPad apps. Mr. Miller was very impressed with their use of technology in sketching.

Morgan Taylor Room 10 Teacher

Thanks to all the BCPS community for collecting the Woolworths Earn and Learn Stickers. Room 10 spent a VERY long time sticking the stickers onto the sticker sheets. Then we had to count how many sticker pages we collected. We collected a total of 32,186 stickers! Next, we had to decide on what was best to buy for our school. We did surveys and then made a draft list for Mrs Macualey to check. Then we sent our shopping list off and waited a long time for the delivery.

Finally, seven HUGE boxes were delivered to our school. We spent a VERY long time pumping up all the balls. We would like to give a very big thank you to Miss Vara for helping us pump up the balls and for writing BCPS on all the equipment. Thank you to Mr Schicker for putting together the tables.

The sports equipment will be used for Phys. Ed and also for recess and lunch play. The height adjustable tables will be used in the Heron and Ibis Block Wet Areas. We hope that everyone enjoys playing with the new sports equipment and working at the new tables!

The students in Room 10 were thrilled to be able to use one of the new green screens to create an ‘Unboxing’ video which was featured in their assembly item. The students utilized the ‘Green Screen’ app on their iPads to make the video. We would all like to thank Mrs. Munro for making storage bags for the green screens.

When using social media or online messaging, make your profile private and only add your friends in real life. Talk to your parents first before you chat with people you don’t know.

Think twice before sending or posting a photo. Once a photo is out there you can't take it back and it can travel a long way very quickly.
