LUBRICANTSMotor OilThe function of engine oil is to ease the displacement of the two surface and reduce the mechanical interference. The oil should be able to adhere to each surface yet be amenable to displacement. Lubricating oil makes a separating film between surfaces of parts moving next to each other so as to minimize direct contact between them decreasing friction, wear and production of excessive heat, thus protecting the engine. This oil film also service as a seal between the piston rings and cylinder walls to separate the combustion chamber in the cylinder head from the crankcase. Motor oil must be able to flow at cold winter temperatures to lubricate internal moving parts upon staring up the engine.

Automatic Transmission FluidATF or Auto Automatic Transmission Fluid is separate type of specialized lubricating fluid. Varieties of ATF are used in automatic gearboxes, and some power steering systems. Note that it should NOT be used to lubricate the engine.

Gear OilOther non-motor oils include gear or transmission, and different oils. These are used in manual and automatic gearboxes and driven axles. They could include specially uses including EP or Extreme pressure, Hypoid, and Limited Slip functions.

Hydraulic OilIndustrial Hydraulic oil is used to transmit power in hydraulic equipment and power transmission fluids consist of petroleum or mineral oils, oil-water emulsions, synthetic lubricants, or water-glycol mixtures. Industrial hydraulic oil and transmis-sion fluids vary in terms of kinemtic viscosity, operating temperature pour point, boiling point, and flash point.

ADDITIVES & WHAT THEY DOMineral Base oils cannot be provide all the necessary functional properties that an engine requires. These Base oils need fortification with chemicals/additives which when used in small quantities, import or enhance the desirable functional properties. Some of the types and reasons for their use are as follows.DISPERSANTS: Keep sludge, carbon and other deposit-precursors suspended on oil.DETERGENTS: Keeps the engine parts clean from deposits.

Viscosity EffectsThe Viscosity of a lubricant helps to drag the fluid into the separating space between the bearings and the retards its escape when the squeezing action brings the two surface

of oil, based on an arbitrary scale of 0-100, with 0 being representative of oil that thins down rapidly when heated and 100 being representative of oils that thins less rapidly.

Pour Point EffectPour Point Depressant is used to improve the low temperature characteristics. The pour for oil can be determined under protocols set forth in the ASTM D-97 pour point test.

API Performance LevelMotor Oil used for motor vehicle engines is commonly called engine oil in American Petroleum Institute (API) documentation. Motor Oils are further categorized by their API

(originating from spark ignition) (typical passenger cars and light trucks using gasoline

equipment).

SAE GradeThe Society of Automotive Engineers, usually abbreviated as SAE, has established a numerical code system: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 80, 90 & 140. Some of the num-
