IntroductionFor over 30 years the name Psion Teklogix has been synonymouswith world class ruggedised mobile data capture equipment, RadioFrequency and bar-coding technologies. More recently PsionTeklogix has led the market with offerings in the Speech arena andRFID, however Psion realise that ‘simply’ producing the best hardware products did not always fulfil the needs of the market.

Customers who relied on Psion Teklogix support and implementation services for a planning or stock system now had aneed to mobilise their workforce in ever more diverse areas andwith real time connectivity to more advanced computerised systems. The availability and uptake of Global Enterprise ResourcePlanning (ERP) systems means more features, more controls, morebenefits, more functionality but at a cost…complexity, in terms ofset up, configuration and most importantly for the user. These fullyintegrated ERP systems were primarily designed for desktop usageand as such did not lend themselves easily to effective mobilisation.

In 1997, Psion Teklogix set about addressing these issues. Buildingon their mobile experience, employing some of the worlds leadingsystems architects whilst listening to the needs of the market, PsionTeklogix created the Integration Services Group.

The remit of this group was to offer complete one stop ‘Solutions’.To analyse the activity of a business, and to provide simplified, easyto use mobile interfaces to the complex ERP systems increasingused by our customers.

Whilst partnering with key system providers such as Microsoft andSAP, Psion Teklogix developed approved certified interfaces enablingtheir new Middleware products to seamlessly communicate to allfunctional areas of ERP systems offering opportunities for our customers to benefit from their IT business systems.

The Integration Services Group of Psion Teklogix are now in aunique position to offer the complete fully integrated single sourcemobile solution, from manufacture of world class equipment toProven Method software development for your individual businessneed, all fully managed and controlled in house by our professionalservices teams.

For Integrated solutions that are truly scalable (Global presencewith over 550 sites world wide and ISG development centres fromCanada, through Europe to Far East) PTX can de-risk and manageyour integrated mobile business needs and help your businessachieve its potential.

providing them with fully integrated mobilecomputing solutions that include ruggedhardware, secure wireless networks, robustsoftware, professional services and exceptional support programs. PsionTeklogix is committed to helping its customers garner the benefits of new andemerging technologies, such as RFID.

Psion Teklogix is known for there expertisein providing customers with user-friendlysolutions that provide the performance, durability and dependability enterprisesrequire in more rugged environments. Our products and solutions perform, day inand day out, in environments where typicalcomputing products would fail.To date,Psion Teklogix has installed wireless systems in more than 60 countries aroundthe world.

Psion Teklogix offers extensive industryexperience and proven results in providingmobile computing solutions for customersin a wide variety of markets:Airports,Automotive, Cold Chain, Field Service,Government, Ports/Container Yards,Transportation,Warehousing andDistribution and A whole lot more.

Page 3: About Psion TeklogixDirector of ISG providing them with fully integrated mobile computing solutions that include rugged hardware, secure wireless networks, robust software, professional

In today’s markets we all strive for thatcompetitive edge, to achieve lower costs, streamline production, increase profitability, improve traceability andcomply to the next ‘request’ from ourcustomers.

Organisations in turn have become morecomplex and contend with moredemanding customers and legislature. To effectively run operations, greaterinvestment than ever is made in businessIT systems and ERP’s to manage, run andprovide controls and visibility.Optimising the supply chain, (a degree ofautomation?) and utilising real time datacollection / interaction is the key to realising these benefits, showing significant business improvement andimportantly, outstanding customer service.

Wireless local area networks andWireless Wide Area Networks (WLAN’sand WWAN’s) can transform the enter-prise workplace by having information atthe fingertips of the operators whereverthey are, and in whatever task they are performing, giving the user the tools foran outstanding performance.

However merely having the data at yourfinger tips is only half the story! If theuser is driving a truck, what use is a PC if he only needs to confirm an action, query or a pick location? If he is a production operative and wants to sayhe has built a unit, he does not want towade through the complexities of anenterprise solution to say he has donehis job! Where is the efficiency in that?

Markets and Value Add

Psion Teklogix business and process analysts are focused on keeping the interaction simple, after all a driver isemployed for his driving skills not his computer adeptness.

Psion Teklogix sees a huge value-add inallowing the mobile user to interface tothe business system with as little impacton his day to day activity as possible, whilst satisfying completely the require-ments of the business IT system, and ultimately the business itself. By focusingon the physical aspect of each role ortask and analysing the systems require-ment of data collection, the IntegrationServices Group (ISG) produce an efficient, user friendly interface betweenthe task and the system, ensuring maxi-mum validation of data with low usageoverhead, and minimal systems trainingfor operators.

In addition to the software element ofthe solution Psion Teklogix has the key differentiator of being able to supply ‘fitfor purpose’ hardware ranging from traditional hand held or vehicle mobileterminals, speech terminals, automatedRFID systems, and tablet or small formnotebook devices, all of which are completely integrated into the singlesourced solution.

Psion Teklogix experience in middle waresolutions covers 8 years of processenabling and simplified applications, aswell as custom ‘value-adds’ such asextended functionality, which may not beavailable in the host WMS or ERP sys-tems, and in resiliency solutions that keep

The Integration Services Group and The MIS Suite of Products

The Integration Services Group (ISG) hasestablished Psion Teklogix as an industryleader in wireless data collection for customers who have successfully extendedtheir business Enterprise and WarehouseManagement systems (Including SAP R/3)to the mobile workforce.

Psion Teklogix offers an unprecedentedportfolio of profession integration servicesthat include systems interface software, application framework and developmentenvironments, wireless hand-held and vehicle mounted devices, fixed and mobileRFID solutions, remote utilities service andasset management solutions as well as theexperienced resources to customise ordevelop ‘fit-for-purpose’ or bespoke applications in the latest industry leadingprogramming languages.

Complimented by our expertise in wirelesstechnologies, surveys, installation and industry leading support systems, PsionTeklogix has the ability and the confidenceto assume total responsibility for yourentire mobilisation project.

This dedicated Project Management createsaccountability and eliminates conflictbetween parties during implementationsand potential ‘finger pointing’ among ven-

dors, as all of the services are PsionTeklogix ‘in house’.

In addition the single point of contact forclients is invaluable in streamlining communication and eliminating misunderstandings.

In the event of a necessary third partyinvolvement, Psion Teklogix are happy(indeed prefer) to act as primary contractor and will manage a third party as part of the integration service, removingthe burden of management from the clientand streamlining the implementationprocess.

Mobile Integration Suite Psion Teklogix solution architects are verymuch business people first and foremostand the ‘core’ Psion Teklogix developmentreflects this. The logic behind the ‘products’that form the Mobile Integration Suite(MIS) is borne from market awareness thatno two clients businesses are exactly thesame, even if they run the same Enterpriseor WMS products and happen to be in similar industries.

With this in mind Psion Teklogix productshave been created to have multiple optionsfor ‘standard’ functions, such as Hardware

controls, optimised communication protocols, database interactions etc, however when it comes to the applications,Psion Teklogix does not drive the client in adirection dictated by software, rather ouranalysts listen and analyse business constraints and physical activity before recommending a course of action. This may well be a pre-developed solution, for example;Asset Management, which canbe simply configured to suite the requirement, or it may well be that theburden of work needed to ‘modify’ a standard application would render theapplication unrecognisable as a PsionTeklogix product. (Inherently complicatinglife cycle support and upgrade paths). In such cases Psion Teklogix have created arange of dedicated application developmentenvironments, which use tried and testedrapid development tools to provide “exactly” what the client needs.Theseapplications fit directly into the applicationframework of the ‘core’ products andseamlessly integrate to give the perfect fitfor purpose solution with all of the benefitsof bespoke development but with none ofthe drawbacks. (Developed with repeatable

process tools, fully supported, scalable andupgradeable by any Psion Teklogix resourceworld wide)!

The “Tek” family of products is built fromPsion Teklogix’ Mobile Integration Suite.MIS is a collections of advanced softwarecomponents written using the Microsoft.Net framework. The ‘Plug and Play’ andinteroperability of the MIS componentsprovides a powerful combination of extensibility and reliability.

Proven functionality, such as TekRF’s certified interface, can be used byTekMobile and TekSpeech whilst newerTechnology such as RFID can be incorporated back into TekRF.The .Netarchitecture with its focus on web servicesprovides interoperability with moderninfrastructures such as SAP Netweaver andIBM Webspace.

The MIS “single solution” solves yourmobile issues whether they are local orglobal, real-time or sometimes connected,ERP or WMS, whether implementingBarcode, Speech or RFID technology.

(Production Planning, Plant Maintenance, etc.) is not included in the SAPConsoleMDE transactions.

Why consider an alternativemiddleware solution instead ofusing SAPConsole to extendMDE?There are several circumstances whereyou will have to consider an alternativemiddleware software solution other thanSAPConsole or WebSAPConsole:

• Your warehouse must continue to runeven when SAP is not available.

• Most logistics personnel who are familiar with mySAP have heard of SAPConsole but may not befamiliar with how it works. In order toprovide small-screen wireless functionality, SAP introducedthe Mobile Data Entry (MDE) transactions in Release 4.6B (and extended them in 4.6C).

• These simplified business-process transactions are designed to be ren-dered in either the 8x40 or 16x20 display screens of the typical industrialRadio Frequency (RF) mobilecomputer.

This rendering is done by “lightweight”middleware called SAPConsole whichtranslates the SAPGUI protocol intoANSI for the RF mobile computer.Thisconversion eliminates the GUI featuresand converts text and input fields tocharacters that can be displayed on relatively simple display screens.A newerversion called WebSAPConsole does thesame thing for HTTPbased browsers onthe newer CE mobile computers. This wireless implementation is tightlyintegrated (all MDE transactions areonline to SAP), and all changes to screenlayout, functionality, etc., are maintaineddirectly on the SAP environment.

TekSolutions for Supply Chain Logistics

Why are modifications to theMobile Data Entry (MDE) transactions required? The MDE transactions provided by SAPare an excellent starting point for manycompanies’ Warehouse Management(WM) business processes and can beconfigured to change characteristics suchas the types of barcode they support, which fields must be scanned to confirmthe transfer order, etc. Beyond theserelatively simple configuration parameters, completely new or modifications to existing MDE transactions are achieved using the ABAPworkbench.

The current set of MDE transactionsalmost entirely consists of WM TransferOrder confirmations and does notinclude common Inventory Management(IM) functionality such as Goods Issues,Goods Receipts (except for delivery), andTransfer Postings, etc., unless these arecreated elsewhere with an associatedTransfer Order for a user to confirm.Functionality relating to any other module

• Your business processes utilise non-MDE transactions.

• Your MDE transaction volume is high enough to create processing delays onSAP.

• Your business process is so rapid that online SAP processing actually slows down the mobile worker.

• Your SAP system is prior to Release 4.6C, and the MDE transactions are therefore not available as a starting point.

• You do not have the ABAP skills in-house to create and maintain MDE transactions.

• You are using or planning to implement RFID.

Selecting the right tool to mobilise mySAP logistics

How does TekRF address theseissues?TekRF is proven middleware solution for WM, IM, and potentially other SAPmodules.TekRF provides several mobileinterface options to SAP and RapidApplication Design tools that allow thecreationand maintenance of business process transactions tailored exactly to your ownrequirements. In addition to the straight conversion ofGUI to text,TekRF:

• is able to map several non-MDE SAPGUI transactions to one RF transaction greatly simplifying the mobile workers’ interaction with SAP.This “process enabling” can be quickly accomplished using TekRF’s SAPGUI tool.

• greatly reduces the amount of SAP resources consumed in high transaction-volume situations, using lightweight BAPIs to post. The RFC tool makes creating these transactions quick and simple.

• will store and forward transactions afterdoing local validation using replicated SAP information to ensure posting. This is useful not only when SAP is unavail-able but also when SAP is unable to keep up with the work flow.

• allows TekRF solutions to work with anySAP system from 3.0F to mySAP ERP and offer an alternative development environment to the ABAP development workbench.

TekRF, as part of the Mobile Integration Suite(MIS) is the most complete tool for the wirelessmobilisation of SAP® available.TekRF solutionscan include mobile barcode and RFID, fixedRFID portals and speech technologies in scenar-ios ranging from fully on-line to ERP independ-ent.This marriage of input technologies coupledwith TekRF's advanced "process-enabling" ofmobile transactions produces the optimummobilisation of your business processes - foreach and every mobile business problem youmay face.

Emerging technologies such as RFID often present a problem for businesses as to whenand how to adopt them. This problem is compounded when the new technology is notthe best fit for all business processes. Barcodescanning offers the greatest accuracy, fixed RFIDthe least amount of handling and eyes-free,hands-free speech the fastest picking for mixedlots. Shouldn't your mobile system allow you toselect the best-of-breed solution for each busi-ness process?TekRF provides the optimum solution for allyour mobile business requirements.

Why TekRF?SmarterProcess-enabled transactions optimise yourbusiness processes while shielding your workersfrom ERP complexity. Several ERP steps can becombined and simplified into one mobile trans-action.This not only facilitates worker perform-ance; it also reduces start-up and training costs.

Faster

TekRF improves not only the performance ofyour workforce, but also that of your SAP sys-tem. Lightweight BAPI processing consumes theleast resources for on-line processing. Store andforward processing enables the user to outpacethe ERP on critical operations.

Beyond BarcodeAs part of the Mobile Integration Suite,TekRFextensibility includes both RFID and Speech. One system can provide mobile terminal(Barcode and RFID), RFID portal and speechterminal support.

Without InterruptionHigh availability scenarios include ERP independ-ent operation for "always-up" functionality.Yourbusiness shouldn't stop just because your ERPwent offline.Without Upgrading SAP TekRF supports all SAPsystems from 3.0F onwards.

IntegratedTekRF integration provides connectivity to morethan just SAP. Legacy ERP,WMS and ASRS systems can be integrated seamlessly, eliminatingsilos of information and disparate businessprocesses.

Where You WantSystem customisation can be entirely withinSAP,TekRF or any combination in between.Thisoffers the ability to select the right technologywith respect both to your business drivers andthe process being mobilised on a transaction bytransaction basis.business processes whileshielding

Psion Teklogix and SAP have a long-standingpartnership.We have many years experience inimplementing successful SAP text-based solutions and we understand the complexities of working with SAP certified interfaces.Thisexperience, combined with the unique properties of TekSpeech, make TekSpeech thelogical speech-recognition solution for SAPCustomers.TekSpeech leverages the same SAPcertified interconnect technology already usedfor text-based transactions to communicatewith SAP.This means SAP customers, who wantto provide their workers with the convenienceand improved productivity of a “hands-free/eyesfree” solution, can be confident that anyTekSpeech solution will integrate with R/3. Inaddition,TekSpeech integrates fully with SAP R/3from release 3.1 onward to ensure backwards

compatibility, as well as, future compatibilitywhen upgrading to any version.SCL companies in a wide-range of industries arereaping the benefits from this natural and highly efficient user interface. This hands-free and eyes-free technology allows workers to concentratefully on their task without the visual distractionof consulting paper or terminals thus increasethe accuracy of their work and enabling productivity increases attributed to having bothhands available to work.

TekSpeech and SAP - A Logical Pairing

Delivering on its mission to develop and deliverproducts that enhance and facilitate the use ofSAP® R/3® and the mySAP™ e-business platform, the Psion Teklogix Integration ServicesGroup (ISG) developed TEKConsole.

A complementary technology to SAP Console,TEKConsole dramatically enhancesthe mobile computing efficiency of SAP Consoleby extending its performance, features, connec-tivity and functionality.

Working closely with SAP LES™ developmentteams in Walldorf, Germany and Tel Aviv Israel,Psion Teklogix has been involved with SAPConsole from its initial testing, to the implemen-tation of the largest SAP Console system in theworld.

TEKConsole has three distinct modes of operation; a high performance I/O engine,a web enabler for Mobile Data Entry transactions and an entry level framework tosupport the extension of any mySAP or SAP R/3transaction.

TEKConsole – First to Optimise RFTraffic for SAPConsole

EXTENDED PERFORMANCETEKConsole includes the Active Console wizardand I/O engine for SAP Console. This uniquepage mode and data caching communicationsengine significantly improves RF performance byoptimising message delivery for wireless mobiletext and browser-enabled appliances. Combinedwith a powerful GUI for network administrationfeaturing ‘set it and forget it’ terminal manage-ment,TEKConsole dramatically enhances themobile computing efficiency of SAP Console.

For local wireless applications,TEKConsole’sActive Console eliminates the inherent problems of using ANSI over telnet: –

• TEKConsole communications is on average, over 10 times more efficient than telnet communications.

• TEKConsole has guaranteed message deliveryto/from the terminal.

• TEKConsole protects against temporary lapses in coverage and communications.

• TEKConsole permits a user to wander out and back into coverage without losing the session or resetting to the beginning of the transaction, unlike telnet where the RF user must contact IT

Services to have the original session terminatedin order to be able to logon to telnet andsubsequently to SAP again since the latest ver-sions of mySAP.com do not allow users to havemultiple sessions.

EXTENDED FEATURES

TEKConsole provides additional features thatextend SAP Console functionality. Mobile DataEntry transactions can be enhanced to add localprinting, or add audible feedback to messages, allwithout any ABAP® coding.

EXTENDED CONNECTIVITY

TEKConsole is the first and only product toweb-enable SAP Console making themySAP.com Mobile Data Entry transactionsseamlessly available on any Internet browser.Any WAP/Web appliance can access MobileData Entry transactions extending these functions to everyone in the mobile workforce.

EXTENDED FUNCTIONALITY

Mobile Data Entry transactions can be modifiedor augmented with custom transactions by usingthe ABAP Workbench®.All modifications arecompletely transparent to TEKConsole. In theevent that a standard SAP transaction, (not currently within the Mobile Data Entry set)requires RF enabling,TEKConsole’s ApplicationFramework utilises many of same Active Wizardtechnologies available in the Transaction DesignStudio and allows these transactions to be RFenabled.

This mode of operation allows othermySAP.com transactions to be interwoven withthe Mobile Data Entry transactions and providethe mobile user with a complete and comprehensive solution without the need forcustom ABAP.

FEATURES

• High performance I/O communications engine

• Web enabled Mobile Data Entry transactions

• Removes the deficiencies associated with telnet

Introductionby lewis Marston - Rocket ConsultingImplementing SAP Warehouse Management (WM) solutions successfully can be a challenge, getting the most out of them issomething completely different and this is where the specialist consultants from Rocket Consulting come into their own. Providingmarket-leading skills and experience in the design and implementa-tion of SAP Warehouse Management and Logistics Execution solutions, Rocket helps its customers to realise the full benefits fromthe functionally rich SAP Logistics Execution software. SAP Warehouse Management SAP WM provides the capability forthe connection of Mobile Data Entry (MDE) devices, such as PsionTeklogix Radio Data Terminals (RDT’s), Speech Terminals, and RFIDtags. Customers implementing MDE based systems benefit from thevalue added by the Psion Teklogix - Rocket partnership whichensures a seamless solution from a single team.

Enhancing a paper-based warehouse operation with MDE devicesprovides improvement to efficiency and accuracy, but it does notchange the fundamental rules governing the presentation of work tothe warehouse resources. It is these rules that dictate the timing, sequencing, and allocation of warehouse activities to the availableworkforce, as well as the material flows through the warehouse, thegranularity of system control and detail of monitoring available towarehouse supervisors.

How do you maximise the return from the warehouse resources? It is this question that SAP has addressed with its latest addition tothe Logistics Execution System module. The optional Task andResource Management (TRM) component works seamlessly with theSAP Warehouse Management module, enhancing the functionalityand providing a platform for optimal operation.

While a well designed SAP WM solution can be sufficient for someoperations, factors such as process complexity, layout, throughput, number and type of resources, and warehouse automation willincrease the likelihood that the site could benefit from the use ofTRM.

How does TRM optimise warehouse operations? The change from an SAP WM only environment to a TRM enhancedenvironment is at the simplest level one from Static to Dynamic. Thisis illustrated in the table below.

What benefits does this provide?Improved Resource Efficiency and More Optimal Routing Tasks areallocated to resources based on capacity (how much and what aresource can carry), qualification (where the resource can work),physical location (where the resource is and where the next tasks is),task duration, task due date, and task priority.

Optimal Material FlowsTRM is highly flexible in the definition of material flows, allowinggreater control and optimisation of warehouse activities. TRM also provides the potential for control and integration of warehouse automation devices, for example Automatic Storage andRecovery Systems, Conveyors, Pallet Wrapping Stations in to the SAPmaterial flow.

Improved Operational Management ToolsHigher visibility of warehouse activities, combined with proactivealert driven issue management provides greater control to warehousemanagers and quicker issue resolutions.

Improved Customer ServiceAn optimised warehouse contributes to an optimised supply chain, which means a better service and shorter lead-times to your customers and improved relations with other partners/suppliers inyour network.

Improved Return on InvestmentOptimised warehouse processes contribute to reduced storage andhandling costs per unit, either through increased throughput capacityfrom a fixed labour force or decreased labour requirements andreduced operations costs.

How does TRM work?TRM provides improved representation of the physical elements ofyour operation within SAP, including the layout and resources (bothworkers and equipment). Attributes are then held against theseobjects to define how they behave, for example:

• An aisle only allows a fixed number of trucks in at any one time,• Restrictions on where workers can and cannot work.• Preferences to ensure that devices carry out the tasks they are

best suited to, only performing other activities when they have spare capacity.

Tasks that need to be carried out have priorities that are calculatedby the system based on when they need to be completed, how longthey will take, and relationships to other tasks. Finally when a resource (combination of device and worker) is readyto carry out a task the system will compare the physical attributesand the tasks to be executed, with the optimal task presented to theresource. An adaptable priority model allows in depth control of theoptimisation process to suit your operation.

So where do you look next for additional improvements?

Yard Management - extending operational improvements outside thefour walls Implementing SAP Warehouse Management in conjunction with SAP Yard Management expands the opportunity foroperational optimisation from the activities within the traditional four-walls to include the activities in the Yard.

SAP Yard Management (YM) is another optional Logistics ExecutionSystems component that can be used with or without SAP WM (independently of TRM) to manage a sites yard activities, for example:• Booking of inbound/outbound vehicles or trailers (Means of

Transport) for warehouse doors and staging lanes.• Gatehouse activities (check-in, check-out, refusal, rebooking)• Managing onsite Means of Transport (transfer to/from parking

areas, doors)For the best results, many of the YM activities can be executedthrough Mobile Data Entry equipment. While SAP YM is a capable Yard Management solution the true benefits are seen when used in conjunction with an SAP WarehouseManagement solution, where YM integrates and expands the WMfunctions providing potential for further benefits through process optimisation, reporting and data sharing, which in turn provides tangible benefits and process improvements.

“An efficient Yard means a more optimal warehouse operation”Benefits of SAP Yard Management Improved Yard ControlReal time control of yard activities through Mobile Data Equipment.Higher visibility of yard activities combined with proactive alert drivenissue management provides greater control to yard and warehousemanagers and improved issue resolution/avoidance.

Warehouse optimisation through Yard ManagementTruck planning can help optimise warehouse activity by reducingtravel time during putaway or picking. System proposals can automate the planning process.

Increased IntegrationYard Management integrates seamlessly into the other SAP LogisticsExecution System components (shipping, transportation, warehousemanagement, cross-docking), further increasing the cohesion of thesupply chain while reducing the data duplication required when usinga separate YM system. Process visibility is increased.

Improved Return on InvestmentOptimised warehouse processes contribute to reduced storage andhandling costs per unit.Well-planned yard activities increase efficiency of the yard givingincreased capacity or reduced labour requirements. How does Yard Management automatically plan vehicles?During the implementation process, organisational relationships aremade between elements of the warehouse and the yard (storageareas, staging lanes, doors). Through these relationships YardManagement can calculate and propose the most optimalloading/unloading doors based on the content of an incoming vehicle, and where that content would ideally be stored within thewarehouse.

Is that all you can do to optimise your warehouse? Many other features within the SAP Logistics Execution System soft-ware module are available to help you support the ever-increasingnumber of activities demanded from the modern supply chain, suchas value added services to support customer specific requirements,cross-docking to help with faster throughput and reduced inventoryholdings, warehouse automation, supplier and carrier collaborationfor reduced handling times, parcel tracking for improved customerservice and visibility.
