ABOUTCHERICECOCHRANEAt the young age
of 12, Cherice recruited a group of NAACP
Youth Council members and implemented a
NAACP Back-To-School, Stay-In-School program at S.H. Gates and MLK Middle School. The program continues to this day dedicated to raising the standard of excellence for our youth. When Cherice was 15, she published Top Teens souvenir journals and an award- winning book for the Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, entitled “Me and My Mentor.” Cherice published the second edition in 1998 and was nearing completion on the third edition when she died at the age of 19 years old from meningitis at Tulane University.
Cherice’s exemplary leadership and commitment to our community resulted in several local and national awards: Texas Young Achiever of the Year; Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award, Founder Tulane NAACP College Chapter, United Way “Mayor’s Outstanding Youth”, National Achievement Scholarship Program, NAACP Outstanding Leader, and Pre-Freshman Engineering, Honor Graduate for three years running, the Emerging Young Leaders Award, and the National Dean’s List of Outstanding College Students.

MENTORING FOR SUCCESSChildren need positive role models. They need a resource, a confidant, a friend. Someone to help them make positive choices in life. They need someone who will listen. They need a mentor. They need you.
MAKE A DIFFERENCEMentors are special people who are willing to spend quality time with young people. They share life experiences, support goals and encourage children to reach their dreams and their full potential. Mentors areCommittedto making adifference ina child’s life. And they do.
A LITTLE TIME, A BIG IMPACT!
Young people who have a caring adult or mentor in their lives do better in school and are less likely to participate in risk-taking behaviors. A small time commitment can make a significant difference in a child’s life.
