At the WindowD. H. Lawrence, 1885 - 1930The pine-trees bend to listen to the autumn wind as it muttersSomething which sets the black poplars ashake with hysterical laughter; While slowly the house of day is closing its eastern shutters.

Further down the valley the clustered tombstones recede,Winding about their dimness the mist’s grey cerements, afterThe street lamps in the darkness have suddenly started to bleed.

The leaves fly over the window and utter a word as they passTo the face that leans from the darkness, intent, with two dark-filled eyesThat watch for ever earnestly from behind the window glass.

Violence in Society

"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he."Violence has always been a part of the human condition because of our sin nature (Rom. 3:23). But modern families are exposed to even more violence than previous generations because of the media. Any night of the week, the average viewer can see levels of violence approaching and even exceeding the Roman Gladiator games.

Does this have an effect? Certainly it does. The Bible teaches that "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7). What we view and what we think about affects our actions.

Defenders of television programs say that isn't true. They contend that televised imagery doesn't make people violent nor does it make people callous to suffering. But if televised imagery doesn't affect human behavior, then the TV networks should refund billions of advertising dollars to TV sponsors.

In essence, TV executives are talking out of both sides of their mouths. On the one hand, they try to convince advertisers that a 30-second commercial can influence consumer behavior. On the other hand, they deny that a one-hour program wrapped around the commercials can influence social behavior.

So, how violent is the media? And what impact does media have on members of our family? First, we will look at violence in the movies, and then we'll take up the issue of violence on television.

Ezra Pound once said that artists are "the antennae of the race." If that is so, then we are a very sick society judging by the latest fare of violence in the movies. The body count is staggering: 32 people are killed in "RoboCop," while 81 are killed in the sequel; 264 are killed in "Die Hard 2," and the film "Silence of the Lambs" deals with a psychopath who murders women and skins them.

Who would have imagined just a few years ago that the top grossing films would be replete with blood, gore, and violence? No wonder some film critics now say that the most violent place on earth is the Hollywood set.

Violence has always been a part of movie-making, but until recently, really violent movies were only seen by the fringe of mass culture. Violence now has gone mainstream. Bloody films are being watched by more than just punk rockers. Family station wagons and vans pull up to movie theaters showing R-rated slasher films. And middle America watches these same programs a few months later on cable TV or on video. Many of the movies seen at home wouldn't have been shown in theaters 10-20 years ago.Movie violence these days is louder, bloodier, and more anatomically precise than ever before. When a bad guy was shot in a black-and-white Western, the most we saw was a puff of smoke and a few drops of fake blood. Now the sights, sounds, and special effects often jar us more than the real thing. Slow motion, pyrotechnics, and a penchant for leaving nothing to the imagination all conspire to make movies and TV shows more gruesome than ever.Children especially confront an increasingly violent world with few limits. As concerned parents and citizens we must do what we can to reduce the level of violence in our society through the wise use of discernment and public policy. We need to set limits both in our homes and in the community.

Indian folk and tribal dances

Indian folk and tribal dances are an expression of joy. Folk dances are performed on every possible occasion, to celebrate the arrival of seasons, birth of a child, a wedding and festivals. The dances are simple in terms of steps or movements but burst with verve and vitality. Men and women perform some dances exclusively, while in some performances men and women dance together. On most occasions, the dancers sing themselves, while being accompanied by artists on the instruments. Each form of dance has a specific costume. Most costumes are flamboyant with extensive jewellery.

The north-east part of the country is the home for over 60 tribes, and each tribe has its own range of tribal dances. The dances of the Nagas and the Bihus of Assam are performed to celebrate spring and harvesting.

The main folk dance of Gujarat, the Dandiya, is performed using sticks. Each performer holds two sticks, which they strike alternately to the right and left while the group dances. They also move diagonally, clockwise, anti-clockwise, as they strike the sticks.

The Bhangra of Punjab is performed by men, to the rhythm of the drum. The dance includes a wide range of athletic leaps and jumps. Dancers stand on each other's shoulder while dancing to the music.

There are hundreds of Indian folk and tribal dances. Each region of India has its own folk dance. Both men and women perform the bamboo dance of Mizoram. While the men hold the bamboo, the women folk dance between the bamboo sticks. In this performance, the sound of the bamboo hitting each other is the rhythm.

In the south, the dummy horse dance or the Poikalkuthirai is very famous. Dancers fit dummy legs to their legs and dance to music. Both men and women perform this form of art. In Tamil Nadu, dancers place a karagam or a decorated jug on their heads and dance while balancing the karagam.

While there are numerous folk and tribal dances, they are constantly adapted and innovated. The skill and the imagination of the dances influence the performance. -

The Irish Dance Master

During the eighteenth century, the dancing master appeared in Ireland. He was a wandering dancing teacher who travelled from village to village in a district, teaching dance to peasants. Dancing masters were flamboyant characters who wore bright clothes and carried staffs. Their young pupils did not know the difference between their left and right feet. To overcome this problem, the dancing master would tie straw or hay to his pupils' left or right feet and instruct them to "lift hay foot" or "lift straw foot".

Group dances were developed by the masters to hold the interest of their less gifted pupils and to give them the chance to enjoy dancing. The standard of these dances was very high. Solo dancers were held in high esteem and often doors were taken off hinges and placed on the ground for the soloists to dance on.

Each dancing master had his own district and never encroached on another master's territory. It was not unknown for a dancing master to be kidnapped by the residents of a neighbouring parish. When dancing masters met at fairs, they challenged each other to a public dancing contest that only ended when one of them dropped with fatigue.

Several versions of the same dance were to be found in different parts of Ireland. In this way a rich heritage of Irish dances was assembled and modified over the centuries. Today, jigs, reels, hornpipes, sets, half sets, polkas and step dances are all performed. Solo dancing or step dancing first appeared at the end of the eighteenth century.

The costumes worn by Irish dancers today commemorate the clothing of the past. Each school of dancing has its own distinct dancing costume. Dresses are based on the Irish peasant dress worn two hundred years ago. Most of the

dresses are adorned with hand-embroidered Celtic designs, copies of the Tara brooch are often worn on the shoulder. The brooch hold a cape which falls over the back. The clothes worn by men are less embellished but steeped in history- they wear a plain kilt and jacket, with a folded cloak draped from the shoulder. Male and female dancers today wear hornpipe shoes, and for reels and jigs, soft shoes similar to ballet pumps are worn.

Today there are many organisations promoting Irish dance. The Feis has been an important part of rural cultural life. Children, teenagers and adults compete in separate competitions for Feis titles and prizes. There are group and solo competitions where dancers are graded by age from six to seventeen and then into the senior categories.

There are dancing championships in all four provinces, and winners of these provincial competitions qualify for the All Ireland Championships. The World Championships are held in Dublin at Easter where dancers from England, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand compete for the World title.

The Irish word céili originally referred to a gathering of neighbours in a house to have an enjoyable time, dancing, playing music and storytelling. Today it refers to an informal evening of dancing. Céilis are held in large towns and country districts where young and old enjoy together group dances. The céili can be traced back to pre-famine times, when dancing at the cross-roads was a popular rural pastime. These dances were usually held on Sunday evenings in summer when young people would gather at the cross-roads. The music was often performed by a fiddler seated on a three legged stool with his upturned hat beside him for a collection. The fiddler began with a reel such as the lively "Silver Tip", but he had to play it several times before the dancers joined in. The young men were reluctant to begin the dance but after some encouragement from the fiddler, the sets of eight filled up the dancing area.

The world-wide success of Riverdance and more recently Lord of the Dance has placed Irish dance on the international stage. Dancing schools in Ireland today are filled with young pupils keen to imitate and learn the dancing styles which brought Jean Butler and Michael Flatley international acclaim.

Today there are many opportunities to watch and enjoy Irish dancing. It is still a regular part of social functions. Dancing sessions at céilis are usually preceded by a teaching period where novices are shown the initial steps. During the summer months, céilis are held in many Irish towns. Visitors are always welcome to join in and with on the spot, informal instruction, anyone can quickly master the first steps and soon share the Irish enthusiasm for Irish dance.

I wanna make you see just what I was, Show you the loneliness and what it does... You walked into my life to stop my tears,

Everything's easy now- I have you here!

"When I Dream At Night"

I have been in loveand been alone

I have traveled over many milesto find a home

there's that little placeinside of me

that I never thought couldtake control of everything

but now I just spend all my timewith anyone

who makes me feelthe way she does

[Chorus:]

'Cause I only feel alivewhen I dream at night

even though she's not realit's all right

'cause I only feel alivewhen I dream at night

every move that she makesholds my eyes

and I fall for her every time

I've so many things I want to sayI'll be ready when

the perfect momentcomes my way

I had never knownwhat's right for me

'til the nightshe opened up my heart

and set it freeBut now I just spend all my time

with anyonewho makes me feelthe way she does

[Repeat Chorus]

Now I just spend all my timewith anyone

who makes me feelthe way she does

Our Friendship

As I think of our friendship, I begin to seeMere words can't describe what you mean to me.When this cold, hard world has me lonesome and blueI look up to see my angel, my sweet angel, you.

You dry the tears that fall from my eyes. You bring me sunshine to brighten my sky.You rescue me when I'm scared and aloneAnd take my hand to lead me home.

No matter the miles that keep us apartWe're always together in each other's heartsSometimes we take for granted, I fear,The ones who are so close and dear.

We get so caught up in life and things we must doSometimes we forget to stop and say I love you.If ever you felt I forgot or didn't careLet me stop right now, my true feelings I'll share.

You're the sun in my sky, the bed where I lie. You're the home where I'm safe, the field where I play. You're everything I am, everything I do.So what I am saying is I LOVE YOU!

A flash of book history

Books are considered the oldest mass medium.

When writing was invented in ancient times, anything that could be written upon was used – stone, clay, bark, metal, skins.

Around 5,000 years ago, Egyptians wrote on papyrus, a plant grown along the Nile River. Then the Sumerians wrote on clay tablets around 2400-2200 BC.

Mass printing of modern books began a mere 560 years ago. They were the first truly mass medium.

Today there are non-physical books published in electronic formats known as electronic books or e-books.

Most people still think of a book as a written work that has been published and sometimes printed on pages bound together, but not always such a physical object.

A brief glossary of book terms

A book is a database storing information as a collection of written, printed, illustrated sheets of paper, parchment or other material fastened together to hinge at one side. Or today, alternatively, as a collection of text files in a tablet computer or on a Web server.

A leaf is a single sheet in a physical book. Each side of a leaf is a page. Literature is the body of all written works including books.

A bibliophile is a lover of books and is sometimes called a bookworm. A bookstore or bookshop is a place where books are bought and sold. A library is a place where books are loaned to readers.

Mihai Eminescu - The Lake

Water lilies load all overThe blue lake amid the woods,That imparts, while in white circlesStartling, to a boat its moods.

And along the strands I'm passingListening, waiting, in unrest,That she from the reeds may issueAnd fall, gently, on my breast;

That we may jump in the littleBoat, while water's voices whelmAll our feelings; that enchantedI may drop my oars and helm;

That all charmed we may be floatingWhile moon's kindly light surroundsUs, winds cause the reeds to rustleAnd the waving water sounds.

But she does not come; abandoned,Vainly I endure and sighLonely, as the water liliesOn the blue lake ever lie.

Who Invented The Pen?

The history of writing instruments with which humans have recorded and conveyed thoughts, feelings and grocery lists, is the history of civilisation itself. This is how we know about our ancestors and their lives.

The handy sharpened-stone, used for skinning and killing animals was adapted into the

first writing instrument. Around 24,000 BC, the cave man started drawing pictures with

the stone onto the walls of his cave dwelling. His drawings showed events in daily life

such as the planting of crops or hunting victories. Walls at the Apollo site in Namibia,

southwest Africa are believed to be the oldest rock paintings to date.

Before paper came along, people used clay or wax tablets on which they wrote using

sharp objects such as metal sticks or bones.

Around 6000 years ago, in 4000 BC, the Egyptians invented the first substance like

paper called papyrus. It was a woven mat of reeds, pounded together into a hard, thin

sheet. The word ‘paper’ actually comes from the word ‘papyrus’. Ancient Greeks are

also known to have used a kind of parchment made from animal skins for the same

purpose.

Now something was needed to write upon the parchment or the papyrus. Bones or

metal sticks were no longer useful as the papyrus could not be scratched. So the

Egyptians created a reed-pen perfect for the papyrus. These were mostly the hollow

tubular-stems of marsh grasses, especially from the bamboo plant. And thus, ancient

Egyptians converted bamboo stems into a primitive form of a fountain pen. They cut one

end into the form of a pen nib or point. A writing fluid or ink filled the stem and the reed

forced the fluid to the nib.

Another writing instrument that remained active in history for a long period was the quill

pen. Introduced around 1300 years ago in 700 AD, the quill was a pen made from a bird

feather. The five outer left wing feathers were plucked from the birds in the spring

season. The left wing was chosen because the feathers curved outward and remained

away when used by a right-handed writer. Goose feathers were most common, swan

feathers were of a high quality, being scarce and most expensive. For making fine line

drawings, crow feathers were the best, then came the feathers of the eagle, owl, hawk

and turkey.

Quill pens lasted for only a week before it was necessary to replace them. There were

other disadvantages associated with their use, including a lengthy preparation time.

When writers had better inks and paper and handwriting had developed into both an art

form and an everyday occurrence, man’s inventive nature once again turned to

improving the writing instrument. This led to the development of the modern fountain

pen in the 19th century.

The Apple I

Long before the iPod, the iPhone and the black turtlenecks, there was this – the Apple-1 personal computer.

This working model of the rare machine was sold by late Apple founder Steve Jobs right outside of his parents’ garage in 1976 for 600 dollars. Now, it's about to go on sale at auction and is expected to fetch more than half a million dollars.

The so-called Ricketts Apple-1 personal computer, named after original owner Charles Ricketts, is the only known machine of that model documented to have been directly sold by Jobs from his family home in Los Altos, California.

And as original cofounder of Apple Ron Wayne explains, the creation of the Apple-1 was a historic milestone in personal computing.

“It was monumental because until that time Jobs and Wozniak were the members or participants in a computer club where they took business machines and took bits and pieces and distilled them down into personal computer applications, but not very efficiently. And what Woz did, was to sit down and design extremely efficient circuit specifically arranged to serve as a personal computer. This had never been done before. And while it was very low-powered, incredibly low power, nonetheless it was a machine focused for personal use. The first time it had ever been done. And that was the basis of it.”

The Ricketts Apple-1 will be sold as part of Christie's inaugural exceptional sale in New York later this month.

The Apple-1 had incredibly low power, but its creation was a historic milestone. It was the first personal computer. The first owner of the rare computer was Charles Ricketts. That’s why people sometimes call it the Ricketts Apple-1.

Chinese man tries to steal

A gunman has been caught in China attempting to steal money from a bank. Wearing a helmet and armed with a replica gun, the man waited for the bank’s armoured vehicle to arrive and send him money.

CCTV footage shows a bank staff member carry a bag from the van, followed closely by an armed escort. When the pair is walking through the revolving door, the robber suddenly appears and attacks them. After spraying petrol in the face of the armed escort, he then kicked the staff member to the ground and shot him in the leg with the replica gun.

Struggling with the bag of cash that weighed more than 85 kilograms, he dragged it outside, where he was attempting to put it on his motorbike. The van driver then called the police while the other armed escort in the van shot the robber. He was arrested moments later.

It’s understood the 29-year-old who is being treated in hospital owned a shoe-repair shop in the city and committed the crime in order to get enough money for the cost of his mortgage.

“I will treat my parents and my wife and kids kindly if, one day, I’m let out of prison.

Giant Christmas cake

Visitors browsing the Christmas market in Dresden have got more than they bargained for. A giant piece of stollen.

Stollen is the German Christmas cake which Dresden is famous for. To mark St Nicholas’ Day, a giant version of the cake was displayed in the old city centre.

Tens of thousands of people watched the three-tonne stollen cake being carried on a horse-drawn carriage, as it made its way to the Striezelmarkt, the Christmas fair for the annual stollen fest.

The cake was cut by the head baker with a stollen knife, measuring 1.2 metres. Slices of this traditional cake then went on sale for a good cause.

Sixty-five bakers were busy for 3.5 weeks stirring, tasting and baking the giant masterpiece. More than one tonne of flour, 750 kilograms of butter, 200 kilograms of sugar and 1.5 million sultanas were used, as well as many litres of Jamaican rum.

The Dresden Christmas Market, or Striezelmarkt, has been held annually since 1434 and is named after an old word for stollen first mentioned in the early 14th century.

The Colour Run

The now famous Colour Run which has participants showered with coloured powders every kilometre of a 5-kilometre fun run has reached Dubai with more than 12,000 participants.

Known as the happiest five kilometres on the planet, having large amounts of powder thrown in your face surprisingly has its downsides. “We have eaten like all the colours.”

“And it reach your mouth, so we swallowed most of them.”

Finally understanding what purple tastes like isn't the only ambition of the event.

“Really, it's just a celebration of health and happiness and making people realise that they can do some exercising, get active and be healthy and have a good time at, you know, the same time.”

Just two years old, the Colour Run continues to grow, following events in America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Yoga For Sleep

If you habitually do not get a good night's sleep, chances are that you may be aging faster than you

should be, in addition to not feeling well and confused thinking. When we sleep, our body repairs on

a cellular level and removes toxins. It is therefore necessary to get at least six to eight hours of sleep

daily.

If you can't seem to sleep enough, yoga can help. Regular yoga practice is known to cure several

ailments, including insomnia or abnormal sleeping habits. Yoga helps unwind stress at the end of the

day and get better sleep at night.

A good night's sleep really is within reach and the often-recommended treatment is to establish a

relaxing bedtime routine. The following yoga stretches can help you to relax and enjoy a peaceful

sleep.

Forward Bend (Hastapadasana): Helps stretch the back muscles, invigorates the nervous system by

increasing blood supply, and makes the spine supple.

Cat Stretch (Marjariasana): Excellent stretch for spine flexibility. Also helps massage the digestive

organs and improve digestion, thereby helping you to sleep well. Also improves blood circulation

and relaxes the mind.

Child Pose(Shishuasana): A deeply relaxing stretch for the back which also helps calm the nervous

system so that you can sleep at peace.

OSCAR STATUETTE

THE MOST RECOGNIZED TROPHY IN THE WORLD, THE OSCAR STATUETTE HAS STOOD ON THE MANTELS OF THE GREATEST FILMMAKERS IN HISTORY SINCE 1929.

Shortly after the formation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927, the fledgling organization held a dinner in the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles to set out its goals. Among the topics discussed that night was how best to honor outstanding moviemaking achievements and thereby encourage excellence in all facets of motion picture production.

Agreeing to institute an annual award, the group turned its attention to creating a suitably majestic trophy. MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on a reel of film gripping a crusader’s sword. The Academy tapped Los Angeles sculptor George Stanley to realize the design in three dimensions – and the world-renowned statuette was born.

A KNIGHT CALLED OSCAR

Since the initial awards banquet on May 16, 1929, in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Room, 2,809 statuettes have been presented. Each January, additional new golden statuettes are cast, molded, polished and buffed by R.S. Owens & Company, the Chicago-based awards manufacturer retained by the Academy since 1982.

Oscar stands 13½ inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8½ pounds. The film reel features five spokes, signifying the five original branches of the Academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers. Although the statuette remains true to its original design, the size of the base varied until 1945, when the current standard was adopted.

Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by its nickname, Oscar. While the origins of the moniker aren’t clear, a popular story has it that upon seeing the trophy for the first time, Academy librarian (and eventual executive director) Margaret Herrick remarked that it resembled her Uncle Oscar. The Academy didn’t adopt the nickname officially until 1939, but it was widely known enough by 1934 that Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky used it in a piece referring to Katharine Hepburn’s first Best Actress win.

Liberty Enlightening the World

"The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of

France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and

democracy. When shipped from France to New York, she came in 350 pieces. Once delivered,

it took four months to put her together, and was completed on October 28, 1886.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924. Employees of the National Park Service have been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933. The Statue of Liberty's face was said to be modeled after the sculptor's mother, Charlotte. This colossal statuary follows design going back to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Security is very serious for visitors to the Statue of Liberty -- everyone will clear security (including x-ray inspections of baggage and walk through metal detectors) before boarding the ferry. Participants entering the Statue of Liberty to visit the Crown, Museum or Pedestal will have to clear security a second time before entering the statue. There are basic concessions available for sale on Liberty Island, including hot dogs, ice creams, and beverages. You might also want to bring a picnic to enjoy on the many grassy spaces surrounding Liberty Island. If you want a free way to get out onto the water and see the statue from a distance, try theStaten Island Ferry.

Christmas Time

Email42

Christmas Time is finally here,It only comes but once a year. And it's a time to spread good cheer,To those we love and hold so dear.

Christmas Time is a time of glee,A time when peace and love run free.A time for those like you and me,To sit beneath the Christmas Tree.

Christmas Time is a time of joy,A time to sit back and enjoy. The smile on each girl and boy,As they play with a Christmas Toy.

Christmas Time is a time to share,The passing of another year.Birth of Jesus, a joyful prayer,To show loved ones how much we care.

Christmas Time is a time for song,A time for us to get along. To make us feel Lord Jesus strong,Forgive all those who did us wrong.

Christmas Time is a time to pray,Put love and kindness on display.Show compassion along the way,Christmas Time should be everyday

I AM FROM

I am from the love of my family.I am from my mom, my dad, my grandmother, and my grandfather.

I am from sweet baked cakes, homemade cornbread, and all the smells of the world.I am from good jobs, great effort, and "GO TO YOUR ROOM." I am from thick and thin, cold and hot.

I am from stories from my neighbors, from my dad and my mom, from my nephew and nieces. Stories to stay strong.

I am from childhood pictures and baby toys. From rattles, pacifiers and bottles. I am from my mother's stomach where she held me for nine full months.

I am from good and bad. I am from music of ALL kinds. I am from feast such as parties. I am from piñatas, candy and ice cream. I am from all kinds of fun.

I am from "I got your back" and "You're one of a kind." I am from love and harmony and everyone around me.

I am from hard and soft. I am from my father's heart and my mother's love.... I am from the hands of God.

Teachers DAY

The United Nations' (UN) World Teachers' Day celebrates the role teachers play in providing quality education at all levels. This enables children and adults of all ages to learn to take part in and contribute to their local community and global society.

What do people do?

Various events are arranged in many countries around the world on or around October 5. These include celebrations to honor teachers in general or those who have made a special contribution to a particular community. The day may also be marked by conferences emphasizing the importance of teachers and learning, extra training sessions for teachers, recruitment drives for the teaching profession among university students or other suitably qualified professionals and events to increase the profile of teachers and the role they play in the media.

Moreover, international organizations such as TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Education International organize international, national and local events. In some areas posters are displayed and pupils and ex-pupils are encouraged to send e-cards or letters of appreciation to teachers who made a special or memorable contribution to their education.

Public life

World Teachers' Day is a global observance and not a public holiday.

Background

On October 5, 1966, the Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers in Paris, France, was closed and the "Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers" was signed by representatives of UNESCO and International Labour Organization. On October 12, 1997, the 29th session of UNESCO's General Conference was opened. During this conference, on November 11, 1997, the "Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel" was adopted.

On October 5, 1994, the first World Teachers' Day was held. This event has been organized on the same date each year since then. However, local events may be on some other date close to October 5, so that they do not fall during fall (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern

hemisphere) school vacations. In 2002, Canada Post issued a postage stamp to commemorate World Teachers' Day.

Just one last dance

Just one last dance....oh baby...just one last dance

We meet in the night in the Spanish cafeI look in your eyes just don't know what to sayIt feels like I'm drowning in salty waterA few hours left 'til the sun's gonna risetomorrow will come an it's time to realizeour love has finished forever

how I wish to come with you (wish to come with you)how I wish we make it through

Chorus:Just one last dancebefore we say goodbyewhen we sway and turn round and round and round

it's like the first timeJust one more chancehold me tight and keep me warmcause the night is getting coldand I don't know where I belongJust one last dance

The wine and the lights and the Spanish guitarI'll never forget how romantic they arebut I know, tomorrow I'll lose the one I love

There's no way to come with youit's the only way to do

Just one last dance, just one more chance, just one last dance

The letters of transit — “signed by General de Gaulle, cannot be rescinded, not even questioned” — were hidden under its unusual hinged lid. It is golden yellow with touches of green and gold, a surprise to people who know it only from its black-and-white adolescence. It has a wad of chewing gum in a place where a wad of chewing gum really should not be.

It is the stuff that dreams are made of.It is one of the most famous pianos in the world, the piano Ingrid Bergman was close to when she delivered one of Hollywood’s unforgettable lines: “Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.’ ” It is the short little upright from Rick’s Café Américain in the movie “Casablanca.”

And it has become the stuff of very expensive dreams. It was sold at auction on Monday for $3.4 million, gum and all. The price included a 12 percent commission.

Of all the auction houses in all the towns in all the world, it had been wheeled into Bonhams on Madison Avenue for a sale of movie memorabilia

Bonhams did not identify the buyer of the piano, one of two seen in “Casablanca.” The other piano, the one in the Paris flashback scene, sold for $602,500 at Sotheby’s in December 2012. But as some collectors noted at the auction on Monday, that piano was on the screen for only 70 seconds.

The catalog said the “Casablanca” piano, like the one from the flashback scene, was taken from the Warner Brothers prop room for the movie. Both instruments have only 58 keys, 30 fewer than on conventional modern pianos, and the strings and sounding boards are shorter as well. The catalog said the one in the scenes in Rick’s Café Américain was probably made in 1927 and has the initials FNP on the back, for First National Pictures, which merged with Warner Brothers that year. The catalog also said that the old-fashioned hinged lid was “altered” for “Casablanca” so that Bogart could raise it from the back and hide the letters of transit.

“It doesn’t look much different from how it looked in the movie,” the seller, Dr. Gary Milan, a Los Angeles dentist, said in an interview last week.

“There are niches, notches, that are very evident in the movie and in photos of it.” The Bonhams catalog noted a “one-inch notch to center left piano leg (visible on-screen) and three small holes to piano lid (also visible on-screen).”

Michelle Koop of Richmond, Va., who collects movie posters and Hollywood memorabilia, attended the auction. She said she had watched “Casablanca” at least 500 times. “It’s my husband’s favorite film,” she said.

But she did not bid on the piano.

“It’s too much money,” she said. “It started at $1.6 million.”

Besides, she already has a baby grand that she inherited, “but I don’t know how to play it.”

I fall in Love Again ( Nick Lachey)

I don't know what it is tonight,Your smile,Your eyes.Yeah...

Even in the candle light,You shine,So bright. You are so beautiful,More beautiful,Than you've ever been.I catch my breath,And fall in love again.

I can't imagine where I'd beWithout you with me.I need you more everyday,More than words can say.

I want you in my life,For all my life. This night will never end. You'll take my hand,And I'll fall in love again.

And nothing short of a miracleCould have brought you here to me.When I'm with you,Heaven's all I see(All I see)

Caught up in every touch,I feel the rush,

Of this moment that we're in.Each time we kiss,I fall in love again.

I can't resist,I fall in love again.

“Angry people are not always wise.”  Family conflict

“I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine.”

“We all know him to be a proud, unpleasant sort of man; but this would be nothing if you really liked him.”

Passion a romantic end

“In the midst of life, we are in death.”

“The amount of missing girls I've had to trace and their family and their friends always say the same thing. 'She was a bright and affectionate disposition and had no men friends'. That's never true. It's unnatural. Girls ought to have men friends. If not, then there's something wrong about them....”

“One little Indian left all alone, he went out and hanged himself and then there were none.”

“But no artist, I now realize, can be satisfied with art alone. There is a natural craving for recognition which cannot be gain-said.”

“It had come about exactly in the way things happened in books.” ―
